THE PASTORAL PLAN By Bishop Joe Vásquez
The development of the Pastoral Plan began more than a year ago with the formation of a steering committee that included clergy, laity, religious and diocesan staff from across the diocese. Listening sessions were held and surveys were distributed to give people an opportunity to identify priorities. I believe this Plan has truly been inspired by the Holy Spirit, who always guides the Church. From the very beginning we prayed to the Holy Spirit to inspire us. Because of the growth of this diocese and the completion of the previous plan, we need to be prepared to serve this vibrant and thriving Church with a new Pastoral Plan. The Plan has three strategic priorities, which are focused on Encounter, Transformation, and Witness. Within the priorities, goals and objectives, I have particular passion about encounter, Hispanic Ministry and outreach to the poor.
ENCOUNTER
The fundamental priority is encounter with Christ. This language of “encounter” is frequently used by our Holy Father, Pope Francis; was present in Saint John Paul II’s writings; and, most certainly, with Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. When Christ becomes the center of one’s life, a person’s outlook on life changes. For us as Catholics, this encounter with Jesus Christ takes place primarily in an ecclesial setting. It is within the church that we meet Jesus Christ. These encounters are primarily {continued on page 2}
