Being made in the image and likeness of God, we are called to love as God loves.

And God loves in a way that is free, total, faithful and fruitful. He gives of himself completely, absolutely, with nothing held back. Because of contraception and sterilization, so many couples sadly fall short of living this self-giving love, of living marital chastity.

Through contraception we intentionally hold back some part of ourselves, our fertility. This is not total self-gift. This is not loving as God loves, and so is a failure in chastity. We are often blind to the consequences of contraception, so often seen as a private issue.

Recently, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) reaffirmed a rule that virtually all private health care plans, including many Catholic institutions, must cover sterilization, abortifacients and contraception. As a result, the issue of contraception has taken a place at center stage and many are confused as to the importance of this issue for families and for society as a whole.

Upside Down Is Not So Bad After All

L

et me tell you about the day my life got turned upside-down (and it was nothing like the Fresh Prince of Bel Air).

It was late one summer night in July, almost two years ago. I had just been told earlier in the day that my job at the Gabriel Project Life Center would be done away within the next month. Then, I had to head straight to an internship where I was working with adolescents in an Intensive Outpatient addiction program. It was a long, exhaustive day, but I had no way of knowing that it was about to get worse.

As I walked in the door, before I could even set my purse down, my then 17-yearold, who had just graduated from high school in a 3-year program and was now attending classes at Austin Community College, told me she needed to speak to me and my husband. We sat down in our living room where she proceeded to say, “Mom and dad, I’m pregnant.”

And with those two little words my entire world came crashing down.

I remember the voice in my head yelling, “Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! What do I say?” I mean I had just spent the last two and a half years as a pregnancy consultant and I spent many days talking to young girls who suddenly found themselves with an unintended pregnancy, so I should have been able to pull out some words of inspiration, right? I even remember my husband looking at me from across the room expecting me to have the right words to say but they would not come.

Let me tell you, it is one thing to know what to say to other girls but it is a WHOLE different thing when it is your own teenage daughter!

In the next couple of days, (and nine months), we experienced a plethora of emotions. Going to work at the GPLC was challenging on one level; I mean, how could I speak to women in crisis when we were experiencing our own? On the other hand, there was no doubt that I was now seeing this world with a whole new understanding and clarity.

facilities that I would ask God, “Help me to understand, Lord. How can any mother who loves her daughter bring her to have an abortion?”

And he gave me that understanding.

Although my daughter never considered abortion and that was never an option for us, for a split second after my daughter announced her news I remember thinking, “Oh my Lord, now I understand! You take your daughter in to the facility, and 10 minutes later, everything is back to normal and no one ever has to know.” I know that is a lie but suddenly I understood how someone in the throes of such emotions could even entertain this thought, and this made me profoundly sad.

After several weeks my daughter began to look at her options and even considered placing the child in the loving, welcoming arms of an adoptive couple. She recognized that this child deserved more than teenage parents, and that somewhere there was a couple who had everything ready for a baby, but in the end it was decided we, along with the father and his family, would raise this child.

On March 22, 2011, Isaiah Lorenz was brought into this world and our lives have not been the same since.

Now, I don’t want anyone to think that it’s so simple. We did not “choose life” and then everything became “OK.” The reality is that we have an adolescent daughter who still has some developing to do herself, all while trying to work and parent her own child.

My husband and I, along with our other two young adult children and the other grandparents, often have to alter our schedules to be able to make sure Isaiah is cared for while my daughter is at work, (the father is away at college and helps when he is in town). We had to adjust to waking up at all hours of the night to help sooth a crying newborn and now our living room looks like a daycare center. Plus, it is quite a juggling act trying to find a balance between letting my daughter “suffer the consequences of her actions” and helping her to grow and mature at a rate that does not cause her more harm than good — this is something only the grace of God gets us through. continued on page 6 . . .

Around the Diocese Cemetery of the Innocents: In Memory of the Children Who Die Every Day in Texas from Abortion In our everyday life, it is of vital importance to pause and reflect on the tragedy of abortion in America. The Cemetery of the Innocents is a vehicle to draw attention to this issue.

The display consists of 205 white crosses in remembrance of the 205 children killed by abortion in Texas each day of 2009 (the most recent statistics). Each cross is 36 inches high and 28 inches wide.

The white crosses of the Cemetery make an impact on everybody who passes by, causing different reactions: Those who defend life usually stop to pray or deposit flowers next to the crosses; those who favor abortion feel affronted by the sight; and it moves the hearts of those undecided.

Any parish that would like to remember the lost innocent lives of aborted children can display the Cemetery of the Innocents.

Previously, every parish that wanted to build a Cemetery had to make its own crosses, but now interested parishes can borrow them. When planning to erect a Cemetery of the Innocents, there are some considerations to make. After talking to your pastor, discussing your ideas and gaining his approval, select a site on the church grounds where the display would be visible to those who pass by. This space should be large enough to accommodate all the crosses in rows standing 36 inches apart.

Once the Cemetery has been erected, it should be properly signaled. Consider placing a sign that reads, “In Memory of the Children that Die Each Day in Texas due to Abortion” or “____ Crosses for ____ Children who Die Each Day in Texas due to Abortion” (the most recent statistics can be found at http://www.dshs.state.tx.us). In addition, some people may want to

add another sign that reads, “Please maintain an attitude of quiet reverence within the memorial cemetery grounds. We are here to pray, not to protest.”

The Cemetery of the Innocents is a great activity for volunteers, youth and families. If you would like to build a Cemetery, the crosses are available every month except January. Who’s New in the Office of Pro-Life Activities and Chaste Living Gina Dominguez, Education Coordinator

Gina Dominguez is the new parttime education coordinator for the office of Pro-Life Activities and Chaste Living.

Gina was born in Oaxaca, Mexico. She has been living in Austin since 2006.

Over the last 10 years, Gina has worked in several communications-related positions from copy editing, to advertising, to translation and interpretation.

She has also served as a volunteer at Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid, but discovered her true passion for service while volunteering at the Mexican Consulate in Austin.

Family: Gina has been married to her husband, Chris, for almost six years. They have a 2-year-old son, Marcelo. Gina’s

parents Ruben and Georgina live in Mexico, but come often to visit.

Interesting fact: Gina loves cars and would like to be an “intern” at a mechanic’s garage one day.

Hobbies: Gina loves traveling, reading and swimming.

Gina is looking forward to helping to spread the Word of Life continuing the work of her predecessor, Lorrie Saldivar, and also hopes to extend the work of the Speakers’ Bureau and the Natural Family Planning instructors in the Hispanic community.

In the beginning the thoughts and emotions are so mangled and distorted.

You can’t believe this is happening to you and your family and you ask yourself, “What did we do wrong? What are our friends, family and people at church going to think?” Add to that, “How are we going to pay for this? Who is going to care for this baby while we are at work and school?

Where is the baby going to sleep? How will my daughter finish college and (since I was a student), how will I?” But as time goes on the emotions settle down and with much love and prayer, clarity eventually starts to break through, 6

like the welcomed rays of the sun after days of cold, dreary rain.

In the end I did finish my associate’s degree and am now pursuing a bachelor’s; my daughter is still working because it was important for her to pay for everything her baby has needed.

She hopes to go back to school this fall and my friends, family and church have gone above and beyond for us, only solidifying the knowledge that I really am surrounded by an army of pro-lifers.

So as I sat there watching my grandson, who is often the only sparkle in an otherwise grueling day, blow out his candle on his first birthday I can honestly say, we welcome the challenges this new life will undoubtedly continue to present to us

Once a person has been put on death row, he has already been stripped of his dignity; the conditions which this person has to endure during his often very long way to death dehumanize him even more. Pope Benedict XVI condemned the mistreatment of prisoners when in Benin, Africa he said, “Prisoners are human persons who, despite their crime, deserve to be treated with respect and dignity.”

As we can see with the Perez family’s letter, with every conviction, grieving comes not only through the death of the condemned person, but for the whole society and specifically for the family and loved ones of those sentenced.

The death penalty causes injury at different levels, and as Catholics we are called to avoid injury, not to create it.

Let us pray for all those on death row, all victims of violent crime and the families of all those involved.

“The presentations were fun and engaging and got the message across in an effective way. I was glad I came and I hope others are exposed to this message of purity,” said Sophie Lillis, a high school sophomore.

Two hundred parents attended the concurrent parent’s session that addressed sexual mores in today’s youth culture and how they can encourage and support their child’s commitment to abstinence.

“To have a program of this caliber offered free to the teens of Central Texas is a beautiful gift and tremendous opportunity,” said Dee Dee Stone, a parent who attended the event. “My daughter and I have matching rings as a result of the evening’s program.”

The Silver Ring Thing was a joint effort among the Diocese of Austin, St. Michael’s Catholic Academy and the John Paul II Life Center, which offers women obstetric and gynecological medical care in accordance with Catholic Ethical and Religious Directives.

“We knew Central Texas youth would respond positively to these messages of joy, truth and compassion,” said Tim

Von Dohlen, Board President of the John Paul II Life Center. “Blessed John Paul II mentioned ‘a new springtime,’ and I think we’re witnessing that here in Austin.”

Started in 1995, the Silver Ring Thing program has been presented more than 870 times in eight countries. It has shared Christ’s forgiveness and love with more than 500,000 attendees with nearly

200,000 teenagers committing themselves to strive for chastity.

Castidad en el Matrimonio: Por la entrega total del ser por Marie Seale

E

n la última edición de la revista Life Times, les prometí un artículo sobre lo que debería ser la castidad en el matrimonio. Y éste parece ser el momento más apropiado.

En un discurso reciente del Santo Padre Benedicto XVI dirigido a los obispos de los EE.UU., afirmó que “la castidad conyugal ... necesita ser restaurada a su lugar apropiado en la predicación y la catequesis” (Discurso del Santo Padre Benedicto XVI dirigido a los Obispos de EE.UU., 9 de marzo 2012).

La castidad en el matrimonio no es algo de lo que estamos acostumbrados a platicar.

Para la mayoría de la gente, parece como si estas dos cosas no pertenecieran juntas.

La castidad se entiende a menudo como la abstinencia de relaciones sexuales, ya sea antes del matrimonio o en el momento de tomar un voto de celibato como sacerdote o religiosa; de acuerdo con esta definición, lo que dice el Papa Benedicto XVI en realidad no tiene ningún sentido. Estamos acostumbrados a hablar de la necesidad de nuestros jóvenes a abrazar la castidad, pero la castidad en el matrimonio es una frontera aparentemente nueva.

Afortunadamente para nosotros, la virtud de la castidad no es nada nuevo para la Iglesia. El Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica afirma que “La castidad significa la integración lograda de la sexualidad en la persona y por tanto la unidad interior del hombre en su ser corporal y espiritual” (2337). Es evidente que, en el matrimonio, los esposos buscan la integración de la sexualidad.

Y el Catecismo continúa diciendo, “todos los bautizados están llamados a la castidad ... de acuerdo con su situación particular en la vida” (2348). En el caso del estado de matrimonio, una manera clara en que la pareja puede vivir castamente es a través de su fidelidad el uno al otro.

Pero esta fidelidad no sólo pertenece al acto

sexual, sino también emocional. Cuando Cristo nos dice en el Evangelio de S. Mateo que “cualquiera que mira a una mujer deseándola, ya cometió adulterio con ella en su corazón” (5:28) no añadió “excepto su cónyuge. Siéntase libre de desear a su cónyuge”.

Esto es a menudo mal entendido porque comparamos la lujuria con el deseo sexual, y no esperamos que los esposos no se deseen uno al otro. Sin embargo, esto no es la definición adecuada de la lujuria.

La lujuria es usar a alguien, en lugar de amarle, lo cual es entregarse. En el caso de la lujuria, la tomamos para nuestro propio placer o disfrute. En el caso del amor, damos de nosotros mismos por el bien de la otra persona. Cristo nos creó para amar. Él nos creó para dar de nosotros mismos en el lazo marital a nuestro cónyuge. Sin embargo, no debemos aprovecharnos de nadie por el bien de nuestro propio deleite.

La lujuria por su propia esposa es aún peor, ya que se ha comprometido a amar a esta persona hasta la muerte.

La castidad es a menudo considerada como negativa, todo por decir “no”.

Aunque si a veces nos obliga a decir “no” a nuestros deseos, porque es una virtud, es intrínsecamente positiva.

El Santo Padre Benedicto describe la castidad y la comprensión cristiana de la sexualidad como “una fuente de la verdadera libertad, la felicidad y el cumplimiento de nuestra vocación humana fundamental e innata de amar” (Discurso del Santo Padre Benedicto XVI a los obispos de Estados Unidos, 9 de marzo de 2012). El Beato Juan Pablo II llegó a decir que la castidad era necesaria para que podamos ser capaces de vivir el amor verdadero. En este caso, cualquier persona que quiera experimentar el amor verdadero, casadas o no, debe buscar la virtud de la castidad.

Al estar hechos a imagen y semejanza de Dios, estamos llamados a amar como

Dios ama. Y Dios ama de una manera que es libre, total, fiel y fecunda. Él se entrega a sí mismo completa y absolutamente sin reservas. Debido a la anticoncepción y la esterilización, muchas parejas lamentablemente no llegan a vivir este amor de entrega viviendo la castidad conyugal.

A través de la anticoncepción intencionalmente retenemos una parte de nosotros mismos, nuestra fertilidad. Esto no es entrega total. Esto no es amar como Dios ama, y por lo tanto es un fracaso en la castidad. A menudo nos cegamos a las consecuencias de la anticoncepción, por lo que parece como un asunto privado.

Recientemente, el Departamento de Salud y Servicios Humanos de los EE.UU. (HHS por sus siglas en inglés) confirmó la regla de que prácticamente todos los planes privados de seguro de salud, incluyendo muchas instituciones católicas, deben de cubrir la esterilización, la anticoncepción y los abortivos. Como resultado, el tema de la anticoncepción ha ocupado un lugar principal y muchos están confundidos en cuanto a la importancia de este asunto para las familias y para la sociedad en su conjunto.

Al final, una vida de cabeza no está tan mal por Lorrie Saldivar

P

ermítanme contarles sobre el día en que mi vida se puso de cabeza (nada parecido al Príncipe de Bel-Air).

Fue una noche de verano en julio, hace casi 2 años. Me acababan de decir ese día que mi trabajo en el Centro de Vida del Proyecto Gabriel sería eliminado el próximo mes. Entonces, tuve que ir directamente a un internado donde yo estaba trabajando con adolescentes en un programa intensivo de alivio de pacientes adictos. Fue un día largo, cansado, pero no tenía forma de saber que estaba a punto de empeorar.

Al llegar a casa, antes de que pudiera dejar mi bolsa, mi hija de entonces 17 años, que acababa de graduarse de la escuela secundaria en un programa de 3 años y que ahora asistía a clases en Austin Community College, me dijo que tenía que hablar con mi esposo y conmigo. Nos sentamos en la sala en donde procedió a decirnos: “Mamá y papá, estoy embarazada”.

Y con esas dos pequeñas palabras todo mi mundo se vino abajo.

Recuerdo la voz en mi cabeza gritando: “¡Oh, Dios mío! Oh, Dios mío! ¿Qué le digo?” Había pasado los últimos dos años y medio como asesora de embarazo y pasé muchos días hablando con jovencitas adolescentes que se encontraban en embarazos no planeados, así que debería haber sido capaz de hablarle con palabras de aliento, ¿verdad? Recuerdo incluso que mi marido me miraba esperando que dijera las palabras adecuadas, pero no me salían.

Una cosa es saber qué decir a las otras chicas y otra COMPLETAMENTE diferente cuando es tu propia hija adolescente!

En los siguientes días (y 9 meses), experimentamos una sin fin de emociones.

Ir a trabajar en el GPLC fue un reto por un lado; ¿cómo podría yo hablar con las mujeres en crisis, cuando estábamos experimentando lo mismo? Por otro lado, no había duda de que yo veía el mundo con una nueva comprensión y claridad.

Por ejemplo, hubo momentos, mientras estaba allí rezando en frente de los centros de aborto que iba a pedir a Dios: “Ayúdame a comprender, Señor. ¿Cómo puede una 12

madre que ama a su hija guiarla a tener un aborto?”

Y El me ayudó a comprender. A pesar de que mi hija nunca consideró el aborto y que nunca fue una opción para nosotros, ni por una fracción de segundo, después de que mi hija nos dió la noticia, recuerdo que pensé, “Oh, Dios mío, ahora lo entiendo! Usted lleva a su hija a la clínica y 10 minutos después, todo ha vuelto a la normalidad y nadie tiene que saber”. Yo sé que es una mentira, pero de repente he entendido cómo alguien en medio de tales emociones podría incluso pensar así y esto me entristeció mucho.

Después de varias semanas mi hija empezó a buscar a sus opciones, e incluso consideró la colocación del niño en los brazos amorosos y acogedores de una pareja adoptiva. Reconoció que este niño merecía más que los padres adolescentes, y que en algún lugar había una pareja que tenía todo listo para un bebé, pero al final se decidió que nosotros, junto con el padre y su familia, acogeríamos a este niño.

El 22 de marzo de 2011, Isaiah Lorenz llegó a a este mundo y nuestras vidas no han sido los mismos desde entonces.

Ahora, no quiero que nadie piense que es tan simple. Nosotros no “elegimos la vida” y entonces todo se volvió “ok”. La realidad es que tenemos una hija adolescente que todavía tiene que desarrollarse, a la vez tratando de trabajar y hacerse cargo de su propio hijo. Mi marido y yo, junto con nuestros otros dos hijos adultos jóvenes y los otros abuelos, a menudo tenemos que cambiar nuestros horarios para poder asegurarnos de que Isaiah es atendido, mientras que mi hija está en el trabajo, (el padre está en la universidad y ayuda cuando está en la ciudad). Hemos tenido que adaptarnos a despertar a todas horas de la noche para ayudar a calmar a un recién nacido llorando y ahora nuestra sala se parece a una guardería. Además, es absolutamente un acto de malabarismo tratar de encontrar un equilibrio entre dejar a mi hija “sufrir las consecuencias de sus actos” y ayudarla a crecer y madurar a un ritmo que no le haga a ella más daño que bien — esto es algo que sólo la gracia de Dios nos ayuda a lograr.

En la diócesis Cementerio de los Inocentes: En memoria de los niños que mueren diariamente debido al aborto en Texas En nuestra vida cotidiana, es de vital importancia hacer una pausa y reflexionar sobre la tragedia del aborto en Estados Unidos. El Cementerio de los Inocentes es un vehículo para llamar la atención sobre este problema.

La exhibición se compone de 205 cruces blancas en memoria de los 205 niños asesinados diariamente por aborto en Texas en el año 2009 (de acuerdo a las estadísticas más recientes). Cada cruz es de 36 pulgadas de alto y 28 pulgadas de ancho. Las cruces blancas del Cementerio tienen un impacto en todo el mundo que pasa, causando diferentes reacciones: los que defienden la vida generalmente se detienen para rezar o depositar flores junto a las cruces, los que están a favor del aborto se sienten ofendidos por la exhibición, y mueve el corazón de los indecisos.

Cualquier parroquia que quisiera recordar la pérdida de vidas inocentes de los niños abortados puede mostrar el Cementerio de los Inocentes. Anteriormente, todas las parroquias que querían construir un Cementerio tenían que hacer sus propias cruces, pero ahora las parroquias interesadas pueden pedirlas prestadas. Cuando se planea erigir un Cementerio de los Inocentes, hay algunas consideraciones que hacer. Después de hablar con su pastor, exponiendo la idea y obteniendo su aprobación, seleccione un sitio en los terrenos de la iglesia que serán más visibles para los que pasan. Este terreno debe de ser lo suficientemente grande como para acomodar todas las cruces paradas en filas separadas por 36 pulgadas de distancia.

Una vez que el Cementerio se ha erigido, debe estar debidamente marcado. Considere la posibilidad de colocar un letrero que diga: “En memoria de los niños que mueren diariamente debido al aborto en Texas“ o “___ cruces para los ___ niños que mueren diariamente debido al aborto en Texas“ (las estadísticas más recientes se puede

Además, si algunas personas lo desean, se puede agregar otro letrero que diga: “Por favor, mantenga una actitud de reverencia dentro de los terrenos del cementerio conmemorativo. Gina Domínguez, Coordinadora de Educación

ina Domínguez es la nueva coordinadora de educación de tiempo parcial en la Oficina de Actividades Pro-Vida y Castidad.

Gina nació en Oaxaca, México. Ella ha estado viviendo en Austin desde el 2006.

En los últimos 10 años, Gina ha trabajado en varios puestos relacionados con las comunicaciones desde edición de artículos y publicidad, a traducción e interpretación.

También ha servido como voluntaria en Texas Río Grande Legal Aid, pero descubrió su verdadera pasión por el servicio, mientras servía como voluntaria en el consulado mexicano en Austin.

Familia: Gina ha estado casada con su esposo, Chris, durante casi seis años.

Tienen un hijo de 2 años de edad, Marcelo.

Los padres de Gina, Rubén y Georgina, viven en México, pero vienen a visitarlos a menudo.

Dato interesante: Gina ama los coches y algún día le gustaría ser “aprendiz” en el garaje de un mecánico.

Aficiones: A Gina le gusta viajar, leer y nadar.

Ponderando la Pena de Muerte por Gina Dominguez

L

a Iglesia ha hecho un llamado para descontinuar la pena de muerte en Estados Unidos por más de 25 años, reporta La Conferencia Estadounidense de Obispos Católicos. Por desgracia, las sentencias de muerte siguen siendo un problema cotidiano tan común que a menudo no prestamos más atención a ellas.

Este pasado Viernes Santo, el día en que recordamos la ejecución de nuestro Salvador, fue una buena oportunidad para reflexionar sobre el asunto. Hay más de un factor a considerar cuando hablamos de la pena de muerte.

Entre ellos, está la realidad de que nuestro sistema judicial es falible, capaz de condenar a personas inocentes a la muerte.

También está el hecho de que la pena de muerte nos reduce a todos a continuar con el ciclo de la violencia, sometiendo a los criminales a las condiciones inhumanas de reclusión en el corredor de la muerte y, en última instancia, tomar la vida humana con la ejecución.

En una carta dirigida a amigos y colegas, la familia de Luis Castro Pérez, un hombre en la actualidad en el corredor de la muerte en Texas, habla a las condiciones de los

internos, diciendo que “muchos hombres se han suicidado ... y muchos se están volviendo locos. Se trata de la tortura; el espacio es una tortura, y le corresponde a usted, y nuestros funcionarios restaurar sus derechos humanos”. La carta continúa, “Estamos pidiendo que las cosas simples, tales como el derecho a la educación, la adoración, el ejercicio, y su derechos a la alimentación segura y buenas condiciones de salud ... Esto es una atrocidad histórica que viola los derechos humanos y civiles del preso”.

Además de esto, de acuerdo con la encuesta Gallup 2011 sobre la pena de muerte, más del 90 por ciento de las personas condenadas a muerte no pueden pagar su propio abogado, que es también el caso de la familia Pérez, que aún hoy siguen estando seguros de la inocencia de Luis.

Como sociedad, estamos llamados a no olvidarnos de la dignidad de una persona, por lo que no se debe ejecutar a ninguna persona, independientemente de su inocencia o culpabilidad.

Como el Papa Juan Pablo II dijo en St. Louis en 1999, “la dignidad de la vida humana nunca debe ser quitada, incluso en el caso de alguien que ha hecho un

sol nos dan la bienvenida después de días de lluvia fría y triste.

Al final terminé mi título de asociado y ahora estoy siguiendo por un título de bachiller; mi hija todavía está trabajando, porque era importante para ella que pagara por todo lo que su bebé ha necesitado.

Ella espera volver a la escuela este otoño y mis amigos, familia y la iglesia han hecho hasta lo imposible por nosotros, sólo consolidando el conocimiento de que yo realmente estoy rodeada por un ejército pro-vida.

Así que mientras estaba sentada allí viendo a mi nieto, que es a menudo el brillo en un día agotador, apagar la vela de su primer cumpleaños, honestamente

distorsionados. No puede creer que esto está sucediendo a usted y su familia y usted se pregunta: “¿Qué hicimos mal? ¿Qué van a pensar nuestros amigos, familiares y gente en la iglesia?” A esto se añade, “¿Cómo vamos a pagar por esto? ¿Quién va a cuidar de este bebé mientras estamos en el trabajo y la escuela? ¿Dónde va a dormir el bebé? ¿Cómo va mi hija a terminar la universidad y (ya que era estudiante), ¿cómo lo haré?”

Pero a medida que pasa el tiempo las emociones se van calmado y con mucho amor y oración, la claridad con el tiempo comienza a abrirse paso, como los rayos del 14

gran mal”. Una vez que una persona ha sido puesta en el corredor de la muerte, ya se le ha despojado de su dignidad; las condiciones que esta persona tiene que soportar durante su a menudo muy largo camino a la muerte lo deshumanizan aún más.

El Papa Benedicto XVI condenó el maltrato a los prisioneros cuando en Benin, África, dijo, “Los presos son seres humanos que, a pesar de su crimen, merecen ser tratados con respeto y dignidad”.

Como podemos ver en la carta de la familia Pérez, con toda convicción, el duelo no viene sólo por la muerte de la persona condenada, sino para toda la sociedad y específicamente para la familia y seres queridos de los condenados.

La pena de muerte causa una lesión a distintos niveles y, como católicos, estamos llamados a evitar lesiones, no a crearlas. Oremos por todos los condenados a muerte, todas las víctimas de delitos violentos y las familias de todos los involucrados.
