Conference takes youth ‘to the heights’ of our faith By Shelley Metcalf | Editor
More than 2,800 youth and their adult chaperones gathered for the Diocesan Catholic Youth Conference Feb. 1-3 at the Waco Convention Center. About 80 parishes were represented and several priests and religious sisters were available to offer the sacraments and pastoral care throughout the weekend. Father Jonathan Raia, the diocesan vocations director, celebrated the closing Mass at this year’s DCYC. “We live in a culture that has all kinds of wrong ideas about love,” Father Raia said. “We must remember how St. Paul defines love. Love rejoices with the truth, it seeks only the good of the other; love does not seek its own interests.” Father Raia also relayed a message from Bishop Joe Vásquez, who had planned to celebrate the Mass but fell ill and could not attend DCYC. “Our bishop wanted to communicate to all of you that we as a church and he as our shepherd are committed to transparency and to accountability,” Father Raia said. “We are committed to helping to heal the wounds of those who are hurting.” Bishop Vásquez also asked the forgiveness for the failings of the church, he said. “We as a church need your help in this path of healing and purifying the church. We need your help in accompanying those who need healing,” Father Raia said. “You all are the church –– the church is not just the bishops and the priests –– the church is all of us together. We need you, the world needs you, to show them what love truly is.” During this year’s DCYC, 16 teens from across the diocese served on the Discipleship CREW (also known as D-CREW), the teen leadership group for the weekend. Jennifer Kodysz, the diocesan associate director of Youth, Young Adult and Campus Ministry, said D-CREW is the team of high school sophomores, juniors and seniors who
seek to draw others to Christ through their service, faith and witness during the conference. “The team helps facilitate the events throughout DCYC. That may include time on stage, serving in workshops, hospitality and in various ways as needed throughout the weekend,” Kodysz said. Sienna Taylor, a high school senior from St. Luke Parish in Temple who serves on D-CREW, said it was an honor to give witness to her faith at this year’s DCYC. “When the teens see those of us on the D-CREW taking our beliefs seriously, and they see us growing more in our faith, not ashamed of who we are as teen Catholics, they are inspired to be proud of their faith as well,” she said. “Seeing us gives them the confidence to be interested in and curious about their faith without looking for approval from their peers. In today’s society, it is not easy to be a Catholic.” This was Olivia Fulbright’s third year to attend DCYC. She is a high school junior from St. Jerome Parish in Waco. She especially liked this year’s

theme for DCYC, which was “To the Heights.” “It reminds us that our goal on earth is to strive to get to heaven. In this world, especially for teens, it is so easy to get distracted with worldly things that we lose sight of what is important. ‘To the Heights’ should always be our mindset. No matter how busy our lives get, our end goal is heaven,” she said. Jesse Saucedo, a high school senior at St. William Parish in Round Rock, said DCYC has played a vital role in his faith life. “It has challenged me and shaped me in to being a better person, no matter how difficult the change was,” he said. “DCYC captures our attention and answers those tough questions and provides guidance for us youth. DCYC makes me want to be a better Catholic.”
