Bishop encourages all to be light on the darkness of abortion By Enedelia J. Obregón | Senior Correspondent
The Texas Catholic Pro-Life Day began with two Masses to celebrate the Gift of Human Life before gathering with other pro-life groups from other denominations for a march and rally at the Texas Capitol organized by the Texas Alliance for Life. Corpus Christi Bishop Wm. Michael Mulvey celebrated the Mass at San José Parish in Austin and Amarillo Bishop Patrick Zurek celebrated the Mass at St. Louis Parish in Austin. Bishop Zurek also gave the invocation and was a speaker at the rally. In his homily, Bishop Zurek said artificial birth control was the first step toward abortion because it opened wide marital infidelity and thus allowed greater temptation toward infidelity. “We also forgot the reverence due to a woman,” Bishop Zurek said. While we often hear that we own our own bodies, “man was not given
absolute dominion over his body.” Men and women are instruments of God’s creation and that relationship cannot be severed. “We truly are his creation, his handiwork –– all of his creation,” Bishop Zurek said. “But of all his creation, only women and men are instilled with intelligence and free will.” We were also created out of love, he said. Thus, we must choose love because we have been created in the image and likeness of God. Jesus summarized the Ten Commandments of the Old Testament when he gave us the greatest commandment in Matthew’s Gospel: “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And the second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” Bishop Zurek reminded the faithful that love is sacrificial. Jesus proved it by dying on the cross for all of humanity. “His was the total gift of self for the benefit of others,” the bishop said. “He entered Bishop Patrick Zurek of Amarillo first celebrated a Mass for the Gift of Human Life at St. Louis Parish in Austin, then he spoke at the Rally for Life at the state Capitol. willingly into death for us.” Marriage, Bishop Zurek said, is also sacrificial, necessitating obedience and humility in the relationship. What Jesus did in being obedient unto death is the “quintessence of love,” Bishop Zurek said. “There was not a speck of narcissism of earthly fads.” Abortion is the total opposite. It is evil and against creation, which is the work of God, and abortion goes against God’s will. Just as John the Baptist was a light pointing to Jesus even when they were both in their mothers’ wombs, we must also become lights to life in the womb, he said. Because the unborn who have died through abortion are God’s holy innocents, people should ask for their intercession as the work continues to end abortion. The Rally for Life was attended by nearly 7,000 people, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. Mayra Ramirez of Santa Cruz

Parish in Buda attended for the first time. She brought her sons Gabriel, 2, and Lucas, 6 months. She came because she was upset at the recently passed law in New York state that allows abortion after 24 weeks. Becky Wooster of St. Louis Parish in Austin, who has three children and “one in heaven,” said she came because she is both “pro-woman and pro-life,” defending the lives of both women and the unborn. At the rally, Bishop Zurek once again warned that artificial contraception had led to mentality that allowed for the passage of Roe v. Wade 46 years ago that made abortion legal. “Our country is in darkness,” Bishop Zurek said. He encouraged all “to be the light that God has given us upon baptism.”
