Encountering Christ Campaign exceeds $85 million goal By Darci Swisher | Correspondent

The Encountering Christ campaign has raised $96 million in pledges, thanks to the generosity of more than 18,000 families in the Diocese of Austin. “This is a historic milestone for our beloved church here in Central Texas,” Bishop Joe Vásquez said. “The

effect of our efforts will be felt in our diocese for generations to come.” The diocese has seen many changes since its founding in 1947, with the number of Catholics having grown by 25 percent in the last dozen years alone. Bishop Vásquez initiated Encountering Christ to provide a vibrant and secure future for the diocese and meet

the goals outlined in the diocesan Pastoral Plan, Encounter that Leads to Transformation. “We are continuing to build a culture of encounter in our diocese,” Bishop Vásquez said. “Together, we are supporting our clergy, strengthening our parishes, forming emerging disciples and embracing discipleship.” As with the Our Faith, Our Legacy campaign, parishes and missions are the largest beneficiaries of Encountering Christ. All 127 parishes and missions participated in the campaign in a series of waves that began in January 2018. They will retain 30 percent of the gifts they collect up to their individual goals, as well as 70 percent of any amount collected over goal. “In gratitude to God, we celebrate this success, remembering that the Encountering Christ campaign is ongoing,” Bishop Vásquez said. Now that parishes have concluded the active fundraising phase of Encountering Christ, they are entering the fulfillment phase, a five-year period when those who made pledges are able to fulfill them, said Scott Whitaker, director of stewardship and development. “Parishes will receive their share of campaign funds as parishioners fulfill their pledges,” he said. “As every dollar comes in as a gift or a payment of a pledge, it is split 30-70 between the diocese and the parish it was pledged to, with the parish share placed in a special account.” More than $22 million in gifts and pledge payments have already been collected, Whitaker said. As funds are received, parishes can begin tackling the projects they identified for their campaign case statements. “It is exciting to see parishes from the early waves already completing projects,” Whitaker said. “While many

of these local needs involve maintaining and upgrading facilities or paying debt, they are integral to ensuring parishes can continue to provide their parishioners with more encounters with Christ.” The diocese must also wait for pledges to be fulfilled to begin the projects it identified for Encountering Christ. Campaign funds have already been directed to the seminarian endowment and to the pension plan and trust for retired priests. Father Jonathan Raia, the diocesan director of vocations, is thankful Encountering Christ is helping ensure the diocese has happy, healthy and holy men entering the priesthood. He had a special message for those who have donated to Encountering Christ: “Thank you for your gift to Encountering Christ, and for investing in the priesthood and the men being formed to serve as our shepherds.” In addition, the expansion of the St. John Paul II Residence for Priests in Georgetown is now underway. The residence currently provides a comfortable home and close-knit community for 16 retired priests of our diocese. They share Mass, meals and activities; access transportation to and from appointments; and receive care and support for medical needs. The diocese is allocating $2 million from Encountering Christ to construct four additional duplexes to bring the capacity to 24. Donors will be updated on progress in the diocese and at parishes through social media, on the campaign website, at www.encounteringchristcampaign. org, and in the Catholic Spirit and the diocesan Reflections newsletter, Whitaker said. “As more pledges are fulfilled, more items will be checked off the diocese’s list,” he said. “It is very exciting.”
