Baptism, Be the Church, and Discipleship The ways which were so available to us during Christendom’s long arc are no longer sufficient...what are our resources? Bishop Wayne Smith's address to the diocese at convention in November.

If we build it they will come. Well, pretty much they did come. And they don’t any more. Christendom began its long death sometime between John Kennedy’s assassination and the first moon landing. That is to say, sometime in the 1960s. Demographers say that the demise of Christendom,

Sometimes I hear the nostalgia in certain questions:

Bishop, does the diocese have a program to help us grow? And sometimes I hear it in unfulfilled yearnings, as in we just need to draw in more young families with children—even when the Church’s neighborhood has no one who looks like this anymore. Old vocabularies persist in words and phrases like these three: christening, go to church, membership—when more apt words are at hand: baptism, be the church, discipleship. Word choices from Christen-

dom, and now. Dear friends, these ways which were so available to us during Christendom’s long arc are no longer sufficient. When we try these old ways now, we mostly find them frustrating.

Which is not to say that we are without resources.

By no means. Our Prayer Book revised in 1979 was designed to be the first ever post-Christendom Prayer Book. Even the casual Christian will notice how different it is from its nine predecessors, in the lineage of our Church.

The current Prayer Book was built for a people devoted to baptizing, and being the church, and growing in discipleship.

To the extent that this Book does not work, it is because of efforts to superimpose onto it the outdated template of antecedent versions. A '79 Book with a '28 shape.

I am of a mind that we don’t need a new Prayer Book; I think we would do well to try the one that we have.

It made what I call the Field-ofDreams heresy appear true:

mostly over and done already, will actually quicken in pace beginning in 2018. There remains, however, a stubborn nostalgia for these times gone by and the way things were when we the Church were driving the bus. Sometimes I hear nostalgia in its unadorned form, a pining away for the days of three services on a Sunday, two of which were packed houses.

Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. In the past few years, during this my annual address required by canon, I have spoken about the gradual demise of Christendom, the privileged place which the Church in the West had occupied for a millennium-and-a-half. It has been a tacit, very real mutual sponsorship between Church and culture. At its recent high-point in this country, late 1940s through early 1960s, Christendom made the Church look pretty impressive. Large attendance numbers, big Sunday schools, new buildings—all growth, all the time.

upgrading the floor becomes ministry

At the outset it seemed fairly routine, the high-traffic area of the parish hall needed new flooring at Grace Episcopal Church in Kirkwood. A few tiles were removed and asbestos was revealed, so abatement was added in to the project. But, might there be a ministry opportunity here? Their thinking was, we’ve had a number of projects that were not attended to. But here’s something we’re going to do anyway. How can we add value to this, how might we keep a promise to St. Matthew’s? Five years ago the diminishing congregation of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Warson Woods, along with Grace, discerned they would merge. Some of the capital that St. Matthew’s brought was destined for a labyrinth in the memorial garden on Grace’s expansive grounds. The light bulb went off. What would it be to design a labyrinth in the tiles they were already going to lay down in the hall? Unlike the maintenance of an outdoor labyrinth, could the tiles require only as much upkeep as other flooring?

And, who would this indoor option open the doors for? Their rector, Todd McDowell, shared his knowledge of labyrinths. They had discussions with the Sisters of Mercy who have a nearby outdoor labyrinth and with whom they coordinate on retreats. Contemplative Outreach, who rents space at Grace, was in on the conversation. They’re a primarily Roman Catholic inspired group focusing on prayer practices that have to do with contemplation, in the Ignatian tradition. They could do this! The labyrinth was one of this year’s grant recipients of the New Ventures in Community Ministry funds administered by the Diocesan Council. Grace member Lyn Ballard was the primary contact for the proposal development and said the process helped their committee articulate what they were going to do, how they were going to measure participation, and how they would build spiritual practice into this project. Because it’s indoors, people using wheelchairs and walkers, and those who would be

challenged by the outdoor setting can participate. St Thomas Deaf Church has worship space at Grace and looks forward to a new kind of contemplation practice. Recently on first Sundays, Grace began offering intergenerational “messy” church with child-focused liturgy and maker-activities and leaders are beginning to imagine how the labyrinth adds to that experience. Welcomers, partners to walk the labyrinth with the blind, prayer resources for people new to praying with the labyrinth, hosts for other groups--there are so many facets to this spiritual outreach. Grace is also gathering a library of resources on labyrinths. The pattern uses the mathematical proportions of the familiar labyrinth at Chartres Cathedral in France. The tiles were made locally, in hues of pomegranate and ivory. And the result is an antidote of slowing down and settling in with deep breaths, to the anxious drive of the modern life. “You don’t have to understand it in artistic or spiritual or literary terms,” Lyn said, “you just need to feel it.”

During the month of June 2017, Jack conducted a travel size personal care item collection campaign for the Wright City, MO based not-for-profit organization Patriot Packages, which distributes ditty bags with personal care items to our military service members deployed in harm's way. Jack had 10 scout monitored collection sites throughout St. Charles County, MO, collecting over 5,000 personal care items. His father, William Robertson said, "Jack chose this charity as he has a strong line of family and friends who have and continue to defend the U.S.A." Jack's Eagle Scout Court of Honor was held in December at the church.

The 178th Diocesan Convention in Hannibal

Baptism, Church, and Discipleship vide the foundation for everything else in the '79 Book. Easter Mystery—which is shorthand for the crucified, risen and living Christ Jesus, the one whose actions and person make the whole creation new. All of who he is, and all that he is about. The liturgies of Holy Week and especially the Great Vigil of Easter mark the calendar with this central mystery of Christ. Baptism grafts new believers onto this mystery of Christ’s life, and death, and new life.

The Eucharist is this mystery’s weekly banquet, a regular encounter with the risen Christ within what the community does.

It all hangs together in this Prayer Book, and the Easter Mystery, or the Paschal Mystery as it is also called, makes it hang together. Everything in our worship refers back to the mystery and its corresponding baptismal sacrament. The burial rite makes us look death squarely in the face—and still find the wherewithal to proclaim resurrection, the sure and certain hope made present and palpable in baptism. Marriage is an articulation of baptism’s calling, and not the only one. The ordination rites are other articulations of this calling. Formation, Christian education, catechesis—whatever we want to call the learning of faith and discipleship, historically has looked to baptism as its focus.

The Church from its earliest days has catechized and taught believers before baptism.

I expect to spend whatever years remain of my time as your bishop focusing on baptism and its place in renewing the Church. What would such a thing look like? For the Life of the World

Well, take a look at our ordination liturgies, the living example of the mock Anglican motto, “if a thing’s worth doing, it’s worth over-doing.” Can we so imagine baptism taking on some of the glorious ritual excess that we associate with ordination?

Baptism would also lose its daintiness, its tiny fonts, its stinginess with water and oil.

Baptism would evoke the presence of mighty waters, of both danger and life. People would get wet.

We forget that in every Prayer Book, beginning with 1549, immersion is the preferred method—and was the usual manner of baptizing, through the early nineteenth century. Candidates and sponsors would learn about baptism beforehand, and keep learning afterward. There are people in this diocese with expertise in this manner of teaching and learning, and I will ask them to pitch in. To that end, and for a broader project, I expect to appoint a Task Force on Baptism to report back to the 179th Convention next year. If baptism is a sign of God’s saving act and cosmic in scope (as Paul writes in Romans 8), then baptism might well happen when the cosmos, or at least the community, can see it happen. Never in private, it happens in Church, on Sunday or a Holy Day, and preferably on one of the five baptismal occasions which the Prayer Book names. Most preferred of all, being the Great Vigil of Easter, the calendar’s linchpin. Easter mystery finds its expression in baptism.

The nineteenth-century English theologian F. D. Maurice put baptism in a crucial place for mission, the sacrament situated as it is on the borderland between Church and world, where the world might enter Church.

God is at work saving the world.

Baptism is what such salvation looks like, and binds the baptized to the work of God’s reconciliation. Baptism gives an important sense of purpose to a Church in our situation, with numerical decline, three percent decline in this diocese just in 2016, and uncertainty about our futures. Church Pension Group also projects that 22 percent of active clergy church-wide will retire during the next five years, 27 percent in the Diocese of Missouri. Just when we need leadership, leadership is going to become scarce. Another symptom of Christendom’s demise—which might not entirely be a bad thing because it might force the issue of all the baptized taking part and taking responsibility. Now might also be the right time to make a big deal anytime that someone comes to be baptized. Those who crafted our Prayer Book had the tremendous foresight to imagine a setting like ours, in which the culture is indifferent to belief and will do nothing to pass along the lore of faith. That’s on us—completely on us. A friend who is on a literature faculty at Exeter College in Oxford tells about teaching a story which had in it allusions to the season of Lent—which none of her students seemed to get. So she asked them outright: Do you know what Lent is? Silence. Then someone asked, Isn’t Lent sort of like the Christian Ramadan? In a college at one of the great centers of learning in the English-speaking world, it has come to this.

The good news at this moment of bad demographics is that parishes and missions all around this diocese are discovering a sense of purpose.

One of the generational challenges facing us in this diocese is racial reconciliation.

There is enough in those words to fill our lives with mission. To be sure, the landscape is rife with needs for reconciliation of all sorts—political reconciliation is obvious, civic reconciliation, class reconciliation. But racial reconciliation has a particular claim on us in Missouri, both because of our history, and our present. The death of Michael Brown in 2014, and the subsequent judicial decision, woke a lot of people up. The 2011 death of Anthony

with whom we share a partnership; Deaconess Anne House, in Old North St. Louis, an intentional Christian community for young adults; St. Francis’, Eureka, whose brand new church we will consecrate in two weeks. Cause for joy!

Times are changing, and the Church of Christendom is over and done.

I think that Church was easier but also less interesting. As we stand on the cusp of more and significant demographic shifts, I find a deepening faithfulness among the communities of this diocese. People are intuitively settling into the basics of parish life and God’s mission. It is possible for us to thrive in this setting. Settling more deeply into the meaning of baptism, and what it demands from us, and the graces which it bestows upon us, is a way forward. We are baptized as a present and real sign of Christ reconciling us to God.

Reconciliation is part of the great work ahead of us.

So reconciled ourselves, reconciliation becomes a way of life for us. The so-called Chinese curse was probably made up by a twentieth-century English member of Parliament and cabinet minister, Austen Chamberlain. “May you live in interesting times!” is no curse at all. These are interesting times— maddening, uncertain, peevish, and full of possibility. It is a great time to be alive, and an even greater time to be a Christian. Can a Community Collaborate to Care for Each Member of its Neighborhood? Calvary Church is in downtown Columbia and has a heart for neighborhood ministry. Downtown is also where a significant number of at-risk and homeless populations congregate. Calvary members know these people through their ministries of Room at the Inn emergency winter shelter, Saturday Morning Breakfast CafÊ, the Wardrobe clothing outlet, Loaves & Fishes soup kitchen, and as drop-ins in the church office. And the congregation is painfully aware of the prevalence of mental illness and addictions in this group. For the past three years, they’ve been watching the folks with addiction and mental health issues cycle in and out of Boone County services, only to wind up on the streets again. And they began to realize there was no continuum of care, that agencies operated in silos, sometimes unwittingly at cross purposes. How could these agencies and advocates in town collaborate? In 2016 they began exploring and documenting the resources in the community. The goal was to identify interception points, those critical points of contact, when someone is having a mental health crisis. Identifying the resources and the gaps in those resources, they were amazed at how much overlap there was, and that no one had yet recognized the overlaps. Could they collaborate and redirect funds and resources from the overlap to the gaps? Boone County is rich with resources, but lacks a way to readily identify available resources. Providers of those resources are not well connected, nor is the information publicized to those who need them. A system and resource map would identify the many resources in the community, where they are and who to contact, as well as define what role an organization fills in delivering the services. Last summer Calvary (representing faith communities) participated in the workshop hosted by Boone County Commissioner Janet Thompson and Attorney Rusty Antel. While both are Calvary parishioners, and Janet is

newly elected to the Diocesan Council, they were representing the Boone County Judicial & Law Enforcement Task Force. This workshop's goal was to begin to analyze the collected data. Also at the table were community social workers, representatives from hospitals, Mizzou, the Missouri Mental Health dept., the police, elected leaders, and community decision makers. The workshop brought in two facilitators from the Institute for Police, Mental Health & Community Collaboration to help the group identify resources and gaps for the community. Project Intercept from Rapid City, SD was demonstrated as an example of a potentially viable solution for Columbia and Boone County. (http://greaterthanthesum.com/rcci-pro-

Partnering with government, judicial and advocacy organizations, they are focused on creating a system and resource map, so that individuals in need could be better served by all participating. The map would help put the pieces of the system together, whether it is identifying general health services or behavioral health services for the homeless, or finding emergency shelter, or English language tutoring for a refugee family. Mapping will also help identify what gaps exist in available services. Ultimately, the system and resource map would be an interactive map that would be made available to the public.

“There’s never a quiet moment in this place,” said Cornita Robinson, Director of Programs and Operations at the Vine and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Ferguson. She arrived in 2015, just after they had begun offering a monthly meal to the community. And it was a rather quiet affair. She looked around and imagined “more of a family vibe,” and worked to rebrand the meal as Clay Café. It’s offered on the third Sunday of each month from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. St. Stephen’s and their community engagement wing, The Vine, open their space up to start-ups and neighborhood organizations. “We treat the space as a center of community life,” she said. And a number of the groups that use the space like to give back by volunteering or participating in the meals. Circus Harmony, the social circus organization and school, is one such group. At a recent meal they brought some of their youth to perform “Peace through Pyramids.”

Growing up in Ferguson, Cornita was able to express herself through arts in the schools, even helping create a giant mural on world peace while in middle school. “That piece is missing for a lot of the kids growing up now.” So she works to incorporate the arts into the Cafés. Last month, Mobile Makers brought art supplies for all to create mandalas. Sometimes there’s an open mic, or musical entertainment. New at the Café is a monthly meal specifically for seniors, held from 11:30 to 1, midweek. The Diocesan Council awarded Clay Café a New Ventures in Community Ministry grant to help get this second monthly meal up and running. “You gotta get up, get out, and go get it.”

At the Columbia Public Schools you’ll find the MAC (multicultural achievement committee) program designed to increase the number of historically under-represented students in their honors and advanced placement classes, and to prepare them for college and career success. The scholars have to maintain an ethic of excellence, meet monthly as a group and with mentors, and once a year have a conference of motivational presenters and break-out sessions. Cathedral verger Shug Goodlow was asked to be a presenter at this year’s conference and she wanted to bring the message of the beloved community to the 400 students assembled. Her message was about inclusion and supporting one another, and grace. But she also knew she needed to capture the young people's attention right from the beginning. She dressed in a conservative pantsuit but with a t-shirt emblazoned with a

young black woman wearing a huge afro. A quick call to a young niece guided her to a popular tune to play as she walked on stage. The lyrics were a bit spicy, so she chose an instrumental version. She could feel the murmurs and attention as the song began and by the time she twirled around to reveal her shirt, the audience was with her for the most important part—her message. After small group break-out sessions with the presenters and mentors (Shug offered a jewelry-making session to a group of young men), they re-gathered. The groups were supplied construction paper, markers, and scissors. A large mural of a tree trunk stood before them and their job was to create objects for the mural. The first piece should identify things at the root of the tree, their context. The trunk was second, what was their ethic. The third piece was what had been born of this ethic, the leaves and fruit, After

all were attached, and each scholar had time to view the completed piece, they talked. And it generated a lot of conversation. How do you fit into this, how does the community help you as a person, a student, a scholar? How can this help build up your own beloved community. Shug’s message was that most of them were worried about a lot of stuff they didn’t need to worry about. “If someone is talking about you behind your back,” she counseled, “it really means you’re in front of them. You've to to get up, get out, and go get it.” They got it and she heard back reports of that and other “Mama Shug”-isms the young people have been repeating. “It was such a marvelous experience, and I was so touched by what they did with that tree that I teared up as I stood looking at it,” she added. “I heard God’s voice in that tree.”

Clergy Transitions The. Rev. Pamela Dolan resigned from the Church of the Good Shepherd in Town and Country, answering a call to be the next rector of St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Davis, CA. The Rev. Maria Evans is Good Shepherd's interim pastor. The Rev. Jon Hall resigned from St. Martin's Church in Ellisville. The parish has begun their transition process with the Rev. Alfred Jewson as a short-term interim pastor. St. Paul's Church in the Carondelet neighborhood of St. Louis City called the Rev. Rebecca Ragland as its next rector and her first Sunday was February 4. Also on February 4, Unity was celebrated in Northwoods with the combined forces of the former Ascension and former All Saints. Their new name is the Episcopal Church of All Saints and Ascension. The Rev. Peter Speropulos, IV is curate at Church of St. Michael & St. George. The Rev. Ezgi Saribay Perkins left CSMSG for an assistant rectorship at St. Andrew's Church in Kansas City. And the deacons! A few have new placements, the Rev. Chester Hines, Jr., is now at Holy Communion. Taking his former place at Christ Church Cathedral is the Rev. Susan Naylor. Taking her former place at Good Shepherd is the Rev. Kevin McGrane. The Rev. Dayna Geddes Jewson is deacon now at St. Luke's Church in Manchester.

Sewanee Fellowship The Rev. Marc D. Smith, Ph.D. has been awarded a Fellowship-in-Residence by the University of the South's School of Theology in Sewanee, Tennessee. During the February 12-23, 2018 residential period at Sewanee, he will continue to research material for the development of an adult formation curriculum on the church's response to violence, to include modules on: theological perspectives on violence; the American culture of violence; the gun violence crisis; domestic and sexual violence; bullying; and forgiveness, reconciliation and hope. He anticipates piloting the curriculum in the Diocese of Missouri during the 2018-2019 program year and, following feedback and revision, making it available to the wider church. Marc is the Bishop's Deputy for Gun Violence Prevention in the Diocese of Missouri and also serves as Priest Associate at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion in University City.

The 178th Diocesan Convention in Hannibal "We had a great time at the Diocesan Convention Youth Lock-In." said diocesan Youth Missioner the Rev. Loren Lasch. In addition to games and fellowship, they painted rocks with words and phrases "connected to things we have felt and learned at youth events." The rocks were given to the congregations of the diocese, to be placed in their communities as a way to share God's love with others!

Deaconess Anne House (DAH) members were on hand to help on the convention floor and to spend some time with the diocesan youth. Rebecca Cole, 2017-18 DAH corps member wrote, "I had never been to a Convention before, and I had no idea what to expect. We got to hear about a lot of the works that various parishes around the diocese are doing as well as hearing from various church leaders. I think the highlight was the youth lock-in though. Though I do not really consider myself a 'kids' person, these older youths were hilarious and excited to be there. We played spoons, painted rocks with positive sayings, and did Compline. This experience reminded me of how much we can close ourselves off to new and fun experience because we think of ourselves as 'not a BLANK person.' While I agree that knowing yourself and your strengths are important, it was a good reminder not to close myself completely off to things that I may not necessarily consider a 'Rebecca' thing."

1. BE IT RESOLVED that this 178th convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Missouri recognizes that our church includes members with mixed immigration status. As Christians, we embrace God’s call to welcome the stranger and to love our neighbors. We also seek laws that are just. We invite members throughout the diocese to call on the President of the United States and members of Congress to reject proposals that separate families, and to adopt new immigration laws that include a humane and just process by which undocumented immigrants can earn lawful permanent residency and eventually apply for citizenship; 2. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this convention strongly encourages members of the diocese to contact their elected representatives to call for the elimination of for-profit detention centers, elimination of indefinite detention, incarceration of children, and the preservation of due process, access to courts, and access to adequate legal representation for all migrants regardless of legal status; 3. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this convention encourages our congregations to offer compassionate hospitality toward immigrants and supports those congregations that prayerfully choose to offer sanctuary to undocumented migrants facing deportation; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we support and encourage those who are called to act as witnesses as they accompany the immigrants in our midst, by standing in solidarity with programs that seek to assist immigrants facing deportation. RATIONALE As people of faith, we are taught to welcome the stranger, offer hospitality to the sojourner and to accompany the persecuted. Remembering that we “were strangers in the land of Egypt” (Deuteronomy 10:19) and as followers of Jesus, we are commanded to love God and to love our neighbors as ourselves. In accordance with our discipleship in Jesus Christ, we encourage all people to follow Dr. King and the mandate of Matthew 25:35-40, to provide water for the thirsty, clothing for the naked and food for the hungry, and to stand against systems that perpetuate the causes of poverty; 2. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this convention, recognizing that our church includes members at all socio-economic levels, encourages its members and affiliates to learn about poverty and participate in such movements as The New Poor People’s Campaign (www.poorpeoplescampaign.org) as it organizes to bring issues of poverty to the fore through national actions; and 3. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this convention encourages all parishes and missions to highlight issues of poverty and economic injustice during the liturgy, in the pulpit, or in special forums on the Sunday following Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, January 21, 2018.

Lay Deputies and Lay Provisional Deputies to General Convention who are not otherwise Members of Convention shall have seat and voice in Convention.” and that subsequent sections of Article III.3 be renumbered. RATIONALE Article III.3 of the Constitution of the Diocese of Missouri already affords seat and voice to the Lay members of Standing Committee and Diocesan Council who do not otherwise have seat and voice in Convention. This amendment would afford the same role to the lay Deputies and Provisional Deputies to General Convention. All clergy Deputies and Provisional Deputies to General Convention already have seat and voice.

Amount of Asking from each diocese to fund the program and ministry of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America in the nation and the world. 2018 Budget represents a 100% giving level on the $307,925 required 15% Asking.

The 79th General Convention adopted a plan to reduce diocesan assessment percentages over three years in order to allow more Diocesan funds to be available for local ministry. The 177th Diocesan Convention approved a resolution requesting that Diocesan Council add to the New Ventures in Community Ministry the funds equal to $56,510 the reduced assessment amount for the next three fiscal years. This represents our assessment dues for our membership in Province V. In General Convention years it also $6,800 includes the travel costs of our Missouri delegates who attend this meeting.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) address the root causes of poverty and the universal need for development that works for all people. These funds will go to Episcopal Relief and Development's Global Needs Fund. In addition, the following lines in our 2018 budget align with the SDG's: Episcopal City Mission, Task $2,000 Force for the Hungry, Jubilee Ministry, and Dismantling Racism. Campus Ministry covers work currently or anticipated at MST, Wash U, Stephens College, Mizzou, SLU, Truman, and SEMO. Congregations supporting these ministries are in Rolla, Columbia, Kirksville, Cape Girardeau, and St. Louis. This item also funds the special ministry of the Rockwell House. In addition, this item covers salary, benefits and expenses for a full time Campus Ministry Chaplain at Wash U. Budget includes funding $26,000 of this line item from the Making All Things New Campaign ‐ Ministries on Campus Fund Income, which is shown in the income section of the budget. This amount represents the travel, conferences, and other expenses related to the Supporting Congregations Cluster. Salary line is for two persons in the Supporting Congregations Cluster: the Canon to the Ordinary and an Administrative Assistant. The appropriate benefit costs associated with the above salaries.

The Thomas Bray Children's Library at Emmanuel Birds were chirping and spring flowers were blooming early last February, when two ideas sprouted one week at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Webster Groves. The church was collecting new children’s books about African Americans and other people of color for the gradeschool tutoring program at Webster Rock Hill Ministries. The parishioners had been generous, and as they were reviewing the pile of books...

Laura McCord with some of the titles and the library on wheels members Mimi Shipp and Laura McCord wondered aloud about how the children of the parish might also benefit from these titles. The next day, on February 18, the Church honored Thomas Bray, an Anglican priest who had started libraries for clergy and seminarians in the American colonies. After leading worship, the Rev. Rod Wiltse, suggested the parish might create a Thomas Bray Library for Children to provide books for children to read or to look at during church services, or to be checked out and taken home. The clergy and lay people at the service supported the idea wholeheartedly. Information about Thom-

as Bray and the planned library appeared in the parish newsletters and Sunday announcement sheets, along with a wish list of books that included God’s Dream by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, D is for Drinking Gourd, Harriet and the Promised Land, Martin’s Big Words, and Preaching to the Chickens: the Story of Young John Lewis. Also on the wish list, Malala Yousafzou’s Warrior With Words, The Name Jar, and The Water Princess. Emmanuel has a close relationship with the Lakota tribe on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota, and so included Buffalo Women, The Trail of Tears, and Saint Kateri Teakiwitha.

Ministries at Emmanuel encourage good environmental practices and stewardship of the Earth, so they included The Adventures of a Plastic Bottle and The Adventures of an Aluminum Can. And in the religion section they included It is Written: the Birth of a King; Oh, No, Jonah! and Water Come Down! The Day You Were Baptized. The Library opened on Pentecost, June 4, 2017. Before and after the 10:00 a.m. service, children from newborn to four received copies of God’s Dream, while children from five to ten received copies of Let Us Pray: a little kid’s guide to the Eucharist, by Jennie Turnell. The books for the library were arranged

at the foot of the altar and were blessed during the service. The bookcase housing the library is on wheels so that it can be rolled easily from one place to another. In nice weather it is frequently outside the front door. Otherwise it is in the narthex, the front lobby. Not only children but also adults use the library.
