Symbols of the office of a bishop Since the Middle Ages, new bishops have received episcopal rings as a sign of the office. Bishop Fisher’s ring has the Diocese of Texas seal engraved on it. Bishops who participate in the consecration today will sign and seal the certificate of consecration--each with his or her own seal-witnessing their participation. The crozier, or pastoral staff, is one of the symbols of the office of a bishop. Symbolic of a shepherd’s crook, it serves as a reminder that a bishop is a shepherd of God’s flock. In the Episcopal Church, croziers often have curved or hooked tops. Clyde Beaty, a member of Christ Church, Tyler, constructed Bishop Fisher’s crozier out of walnut, augmented with hickory from Camp Allen. The crozier is a gift from the Rt. Rev. C. Andrew Doyle, Bishop of Texas. Bishop Fisher chose the St. John the Divine Chapel Cross for his pectoral cross. He was baptized at St. John the Divine, Houston, on Pentecost, 1964. The cross was designed by the French artist and Houstonian, Louis DeMartelley for St. John the Divine. St. Augustine identifies the man with Mark, the lion with Matthew, the ox with Luke, and the eagle with John. Augustine’s reasoning for the symbols is that the Gospel of Mark presents the most human picture of Jesus and is most naturally portrayed by the man; Matthew presents Jesus as the Messiah, the Lion of Judah, and is represented by the lion; Luke presents Jesus as the Savior of the world, and is ideally symbolized by the ox, the animal of sacrifice. Finally, the symbol for the Gospel of John is the eagle. Of all birds, the eagle flies the highest and is said to be the only living creature which can look straight into the sun and not be dazzled. Augustine writes: “St. John the Apostle, not unworthy in respect of spiritual intelligence compared to the eagle, has taken a higher flight, and soared in his preaching more sublimely than the other three, and in the lifting up thereof would have our hearts lifted up likewise.” In the center of the Chapel Cross are the Greek letters ICH, letters which have formed a monogram for the name, Jesus, since the early days of the Church.

October 6, we remember William Tyndale, 1536, and Miles Coverdale, 1568, translators of the Bible. Tyndale was born near the Welsh border about 1495 and was educated at Oxford and Cambridge. Ordained in 1521, he spent his early ministry as a chaplain and tutor. He had a single passion--to translate the Holy Scriptures into English. Lacking official sanction, he went to Germany in 1524. Strongly opposed to his work, King Henry VIII, Cardinal Wolsey and others, sought to destroy his work and put him to death. He was betrayed by a friend and was strangled and burned at the stake on October 6, 1536 in Brussels. At the time of his death, Tyndale had completed his translation of the New Testament and major parts of the Old Testament. An estimated 80 percent of Tyndale’s work found its way into later translations, notably the King James Bible (1611). Coverdale, born in 1488, studied at Cambridge and ordained in 1514 and joined the Augustinian Friars. He left the monastery in 1526 to move to the Continent where the work of translation enjoyed strong support. His version was issued as The Great Bible in 1539. Archbishop Cranmer adopted Coverdale’s translation of the Psalter for the Book of Common Prayer. Coverdale served as a Lutheran pastor from 1543-1547, then served as Bishop of Exeter in 1551 until deprived of that office at the accession of Queen Mary due to his Protestant convictions. He escaped to the Continent where he lived until Elizabeth I’s accession to the throne in 1559. He is remembered as an outstanding preacher, an uncommonly gifted linguist and translator and a leader of the Puritan wing of the Church of England.

The Presentation The bishops and people sit. Representatives of the diocese, both Priests and Lay Persons, standing before the Presiding Bishop, present the bishop-elect, saying Katharine, Bishop in the Church of God, the clergy and people of the Diocese of Texas, trusting in the guidance of the Holy Spirit, have chosen Jeff Wright Fisher to be a bishop and chief pastor. We therefore ask you to lay your hands upon him and in the power of the Holy Spirit to consecrate him a bishop in the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. The Presiding Bishop then directs that the testimonials of the election be read. When the reading is ended, the Presiding Bishop requires the following promise from the Bishop-elect In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, I, Jeff Wright Fisher, chosen Bishop of the Church in Texas, solemnly declare that I do believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be the Word of God, and to contain all things necessary to salvation; and I do solemnly engage to conform to the doctrine, discipline, and worship of the Episcopal Church. The Bishop-elect then signs the above Declaration in the sight of all present. The witnesses add their signatures. All stand. The Presiding Bishop then says the following, or similar words, and asks the response of the people Brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus, you have heard testimony given that Jeff Wright Fisher has been duly and lawfully elected to be a bishop of the Church of God to serve in the Diocese of Texas. The Examination All now sit, except the bishop-elect, who stands facing the bishops. The Presiding Bishop addresses the bishop-elect: My brother, the people have chosen you and have affirmed their trust in you by acclaiming your election. A bishop in God’s holy Church is called to be one with the apostles in proclaiming Christ’s resurrection and interpreting the Gospel, and to testify to Christ’s sovereignty as Lord of lords and King of kings. You are called to guard the faith, unity, and discipline of the Church; to celebrate and to provide for the administration of the sacraments of the New Covenant; to ordain priests and deacons and to join in ordaining bishops; and to be in all things a faithful pastor and wholesome example for the entire flock of Christ. With your fellow bishops you will share in the leadership of the Church throughout the world. Your heritage is the faith of patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and those of every generation who have looked to God in hope. Your joy will be to follow him who came, not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many. Bishop Are you persuaded that God has called you to the office of bishop? Bishop-elect We believe in one God. Then all say together We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. The Consecration of the Bishop

All continue to stand, except the bishop-elect, who kneels before the Presiding Bishop. The other bishops stand to the right and left of the Presiding Bishop. Hymn 503 Come Holy Ghost (See page 34) A period of silent prayer follows, the people still standing. The Presiding Bishop then begins this Prayer of Consecration God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Father of mercies and God of all comfort, dwelling on high but having regard for the lowly, knowing all things before they come to pass: We give you thanks that from the beginning you have gathered and prepared a people to be heirs of the covenant of Abraham, and have raised up prophets, kings, and priests, never leaving your temple untended. We praise you also that from the creation you have graciously accepted the ministry of those whom you have chosen. 18
