Magnificent Specimens from the George V Era

ur June edition of Essentially Money offers a diverse selection of coins and banknotes to suit discerning investors and collectors with the emphasis on quality and scarcity.

Foremost Examples of Striking Excellence produced during Wartime Australia

The 1914H Specimen Florin, a superior Australian numismatic rarity, is a major highlight this month and one which we are extremely pleased to present as an outstanding opportunity for investors seeking high profile pieces offering significant growth potential. Early Australian Commonwealth coins in premium quality grades are proving increasingly difficult to obtain and we have been actively pursuing opportunities to acquire the finest examples currently available. This means considerable travel and negotiating deals which at times are few and far between, either as a result of added pressure with competition from fellow dealers or simply a general lack of availability in the marketplace. Establishing strong and reliable contacts in Australia’s numismatic industry is one of the most valuable assets a dealer can possess in these times and often takes many years to build through sheer dedication and maintaining a high standard of ethics. The Rare Coin Company has established a first class reputation within Australia’s numismatic industry of which we are justly proud in our 27 year history. Our ability to provide clients with some of the most prized and valuable coin and banknote rarities in the marketplace over the years has exposed us to many world-class buying opportunities. We are now industry leaders in high profile numismatic rarities and we feel extremely proud and privileged to have access to these historical treasures to offer our valued clients where they would not otherwise be made available or possibly even known by many people today. Unique and excessively rare numismatic items that were once the property of the Reserve Bank and hidden away in bank vaults and archives, or either gifted to VIP’s and important recipients

Robert & Barbara Jackman managing directors

receiving honoured presentation pieces, or passed down from the most distinguished collections, are now made available for private sale to investors and collectors thanks to the persistence of many dealers who had the courage and confidence in the readiness of Australia’s numismatic market to expand into an elite era of super rarities. The market has plenty of scope though and potential buyers need not think they must part with a massive fortune to profit from their investment. There are areas of opportunity in almost any numismatic pieces; however quality is the key if you really want to make it worth your while. This is why we select areas that are well sought after and offer the most potential in their particular category.

USA Numismatic Auction Realises Massive US$45 million One of the most amazing contrasts of the global financial recession was recently observed in the USA. Heritage Auctions, America’s largest numismatic firm, realised an incredible sale total of approx US$45 million in Cincinnati, Ohio recently. One coin in the sale, a USA Adams - Carter 1804 class III One Dollar piece realized US$2.3 million alone - it appears that some markets don’t even know there is a global recession.

Exceptional striking quality together with particularly small mintages and solid investment returns has raised the profile of quality, Pre Decimal Australian Specimen coins to new and exciting heights in the numismatic investment arena in recent years. Investor interest in George V era currency has gathered strong momentum with astute buyers constantly on the look out for premium acquisitions to boost their portfolios. The extremely rare Specimen strikes displayed here represent a prestigious investment opportunity and outstanding examples of the talents of the mint master of the time. Specimen coins are produced to a particularly high standard of finish. They are the initial strikes from a “working” die where special care is taken in the striking to ensure superior results. The difference is that the die is brand new so the strike is razor sharp and the fields equally smooth. They are generally hand struck and made as an example of a given issue and for presentation purposes only.

1914H George V Specimen Florin Collectors and investors continue to be enamoured with the history and rarity of the uniquely Australian Commonwealth florin or two shilling coin. Florins, including commemorative issues were produced during various years between 1910 and 1963.

Birmingham issues carry the “H” for Heaton mintmark while the Royal Mint issues had no mark. The Melbourne, Sydney and San Francisco mints produced Australian florins in subsequent years.

The first florins displayed King Edward VII and the Australian Coat of Arms. King George V featured from 1911 to 1936. As one of only approximately three known to exist, this striking Specimen is a tremendous example from the eminent Florin series, offering impressive investment prospects.

1916 George V Specimen Penny During World War I, bronze coinage was produced at the Calcutta Mint, India due to the pre-occupation of the Royal Mint in London with defence commitments. The Royal Mint supplied the Calcutta Mint with master dies for Australian pennies and half pennies which were struck there in 1916, 1917 and 1918. While the halfpenny die was identical to the London one, the Australian penny featured two obverse die varieties through the King George V series between 1911 and 1936 and was known as the Indian die. A small ‘I’ appeared below the lower scroll on the reverse to identify the Calcutta Mint. Australian pennies were issued until 1964. This precious Pre Decimal Specimen Penny holds great historical significance and a prominent position in today’s global numismatic market.

some of the lowest mintages in the entire Pre Decimal series. Those specially struck prior to 1955 were set aside as finest examples for a mint museum collection or to present to VIP’s and as such limited numbers are now available to private collectors. Highly polished dies and blanks are used in their manufacture.

Inspiring Australian George VI Proof Set - London Mint Fetching notable returns and with demand steadily on the rise and limited examples available, all indications are that Australian Pre Decimal Proofs most certainly have a bright future on the investment performance front.

Superior quality Australian Pre Federation Specimen banknotes inspire investors and collectors around the world due to their steady price performance, historic worth and the limited numbers printed. Specimen notes were especially printed to mark the intended release of a new banknote for circulation and were kept as examples of the printing or issue and as such were produced in very small numbers. From 1817 until 1910, many private banks and some State Governments issued banknotes in denominations up to one hundred pounds.

Minted in London

To acquire individual Proofs is rewarding in itself so to secure a set of four Fleur De Coin (FDC) or “Flower of the Die” grade coins is enough to excite even the most seasoned collector or investor.

Coins from this ex-Pretoria Mint Collection, South Africa, Proof Set were all struck at the Royal Mint in London. Other issues were struck at mints including Melbourne. These coins are superior strikes and were selected to be presented to the Pretoria Mint - a customary practice with Mints throughout the world.

This 1900 about Uncirculated note was issued by The National Bank of Australasia, Perth branch, which was established in 1866. The National Bank of Australasia was established in Melbourne in 1858 and reconstructed during the financial crisis of 1893 to become the National Bank of Australasia Limited. It merged with the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney Ltd in 1982 when the title changed to the National Australia Bank as we know it today. Buyers are just now starting to fully appreciate the growth potential for quality notes of this historic period and as such demand is strong and well on the rise.

The Humble Sixpence comes of Age The sixpence was a popular medium of exchange in Australia from 1911 to the mid-1920’s and was so well used and worn over time (even traditionally hidden in Christmas puddings) that they are now extremely hard to acquire in higher quality grades.

1881 Five Pound Issued Note While the history of Australian Colonial paper money may be relatively brief the details are diverse and fascinating. The formation of Australia’s first bank, the Bank of New South Wales, in Sydney in 1817 heralded a new era in Colonial Australian currency. Part of the bank’s role was to produce banknotes and for the first time a standardised currency was issued in Australia which was backed by assets. Previously, the colonies had suffered a major shortage of currency which led to all manner of private notes circulating which caused serious problems for the Government. Other private banks soon followed the Bank of NSW’s lead and banknotes of all sizes and colours were circulated throughout Australian settlements. The number of private banks fluctuated according to the 1850’s gold rush and the depression of 1891 to 1893 when 54 of the 64 banks trading prior to the financial crash closed their doors to regroup and 34 of them never reopened. Capitalise now on the future growth potential of this captivating banknote deemed Extremely Rare in this Grade.

Union Bank of Australia (1837-1951)

Rare Quality George V Pre Decimal Banknotes

Rare and Unique Uniface Printer’s Proofs

One of the Top Performers in Today’s Numismatic Marketplace 1923 George V Ten Shilling Banknote

The incredible price growth of Pre Federation Proof issues over recent years stands testament to their strengthening demand in the marketplace and the growing investor confidence in this exciting area of numismatic investing. Printer’s Proofs were a completed example of a proposed note issue, usually uniface (one-sided) printed on plain paper in the chosen colours and format that were to be used. The notes were sent to the customer for final approval and to display the artwork and expertise of the printer but remained the property of the engraver, which in this case was Perkins, Bacon & Co., London.

Forming part of the Gold Bearing Series, Australian banknotes issued between 1923 and 1933 were payable in gold coin. There were several varieties of ten shilling notes issued during this time, which were discernible by the different signature combinations. They were occasionally referred to as the ‘Harrison Issue’ in recognition of Australian Note Printer TS Harrison. The words HALF SOVEREIGN were printed in bold red lettering in the top and side margins to help distinguish them from other denominations and deter unscrupulous forgers who became adept in their efforts to deceive the public.

The 1881 twenty pound note on card is an extremely important piece as it is the only one known with the Hobart domicile. Equally impressive is the 1878 five pound note of which only two are known from the Ballarat, Victoria domicile. The 1877 one pound note domiciled in Melbourne would also make a highly prized acquisition as it is very rare and of a high quality state of preservation.

The issue of the new 1923 ten shilling note design featured the signatures of then Governor of the Commonwealth Bank Denison SK Miller and Secretary to the Treasury James R Collins. The front of the note includes the Australian Coat of Arms and the legend “THE COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA” “AUSTRALIAN NOTE”. The back has an image of the Goulburn Weir in Victoria.

Merger Plans The bank continued to prosper and forge ahead absorbing other financial bodies and opening more branches before and after it officially became the Union Bank of Australia Limited in 1880 and by 1887 it had established 86 offices. In 1947, the Union Bank of Australia Limited and Bank of Australia boards announced their intention to merge, but this was abandoned when the Labour Prime Minister Ben Chifley announced in August that year, that the Australian Government proposed to legislate immediately to nationalise all non-government banking in Australia. However, the Chifley Government lost office and plans resumed. The banks merged in 1951 to form the Australian and New Zealand Bank Limited. In 1970 the ANZ Bank merged with the English Scottish and Australian Bank to form the ANZ Banking Group Limited. The Bank of Adelaide was absorbed in 1980.

Fine Examples of Great Britain Coinage

A Key Opportunity for Investors and Collectors

Historic Silver Coins with an Investment Edge!

19-- Ten Shilling Unissued Remainder - with Selvedge

The Crowning Glory of Great Britain Coinage

The Bank of New South Wales (1817-1982) was an authorised banknote issuer for New Zealand from 1861 to 1934. The bank opened its first branch in Auckland in 1861 and another in Wellington, Dunedin and Invercargill. Within three months, the note issue circulation for the branches was £11,000. The unissued note with selvedge displayed here was specially printed as a Specimen or example only, to mark the intended release of a new banknote for circulation. They were usually identified by the word SPECIMEN or CANCELLED either printed or perforated on the front and back of the note as displayed on the front of this note. The blank side reveals faint perforations that read ‘Specimen’ and ‘C. Skipper & East,’ a London-based printer. Rarely are such examples made available to the collecting public and being printed in small numbers have generated significant price growth in recent years.

Early coins of Great Britain continue to capture the imagination of collectors and investors inspired by their rarity, elaborate craftsmanship and artistry and the enthralling history and romance of the times.

in any action against an enemy of the United States or as a result of an act of any such enemy or opposing armed forces.” As with other combat medals, multiple awards are denoted by award stars for the Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard, or oak leaf clusters for the Army and Air Force. The first Purple Heart was awarded to US General Douglas MacArthur in World War II. During the early period of America’s involvement in the war the Medal was awarded for wounds received in action against the enemy and for meritorious performance of duty. Over the years it would be extended to include other individuals including members of peacekeeping forces. Other medals given in the US include the Medal of Honour and Silver Star. This striking Purple Heart Medal design would make a wonderful addition to any collector’s numismatic anthology.

2009 Perth Mint Proof Gold Sovereign The Perth Mint has renewed its longstanding association with the most famous gold coin in the world with the first annual release of a new Proof quality sovereign. Dating from the reign of King Henry VII, the sovereign played an indispensable role in commerce and banking in the heyday of the British Empire.

Famous Battles 1oz Silver Proof Coin Series The Battle of Cannae 216 BC

Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965 and featuring a unique Australian reverse, the 2009 Perth Mint Proof Sovereign is meticulously struck from the traditional 91.67% pure gold (22-carats).

The second coin in the ‘Famous Battles’ Silver Proof Coin Series commemorates Hannibal’s crushing defeat of the Roman legions in The Battle of Cannae 216BC. Against a massive force comprising 80,000 infantry and 6,000 cavalry, his outnumbered Carthaginian army won a remarkable victory that has been hailed one of the greatest tactical achievements in military history. The coin’s reverse portrays a Carthaginian warrior and one of Hannibal’s 30 war elephants.

Increasing the desirability for this remarkable release, no more than 2,500 Perth Mint Proof Sovereigns will be released annually.

The Perth Mint will release just 5,000 of these coins, which come in superb presentation packaging.
