Type I Specimens All Extremely Rare Being printed before their individual production runs and usually only circulated within a select group of the banking industry, the Commonwealth Government and associated dignitaries, Specimens are a notoriously rare and enviable prize in world numismatic circles. A review of their strong past growth performance and current sales results is a great indicator of things to come.

Produced to mark the intended release of a new banknote for circulation, specimens were generally printed with the same plates, ink and paper as regular issue notes. Once appraised they were stored in government archives as reference notes, presented to VIPs or given to libraries, banks and other institutions. Type I Specimens, featuring the single word ‘SPECIMEN’ in red hollow block letters on each side, are all extremely rare.

In strong demand and experiencing excellent price growth

Record Holder Governor Coombs Signatory Herbert C. Coombs was the record holder for the longest term as signatory on Australian notes from 1949 to 1968.

He was Governor of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) from 1949 to 1960 and the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) until 1968. His signature appeared on pre-decimal and decimal issues. Fellow eminent signatory Ronald Wilson, who served as Secretary to the Treasury from 1951 to 1966, also featured on both issues.

Queen Elizabeth Issues The release of the new Queen Elizabeth II banknotes issued from 1953 to 1966 displayed key innovations and were the last of the old denominations before decimal currency arrived.

For the first time, with the exception of the one pound, portraits of reigning monarchs were replaced with historical figures.

The front of the five pound portrayed the Governor of Van Diemen’s Land (1836-1843) Sir John Franklin and the Australian Coatof-Arms. On the back was a steel engraved mural representing primary industry with a central Aboriginal motif and native sea shells.

Notes were amended with the establishment of the RBA in 1960. The title changed from

Superscribed banknotes belong to one of the most challenging, fascinating and top performing series of Australian rare currency to acquire. Many failed to survive, even in public institutions, making those that rarely appear for sale today a key target for discerning buyers. The value and demand for Superscribed notes is destined to rise substantially over the coming years.

The mere hint of a Specimen of such rarity and prestige such as the example being offered for sale here, stirs discerning buyers into action. In 1910 the first steps were taken by the Australian Commonwealth Government to issue its own banknotes.

It initially lacked the resources, so as a temporary measure requisitioned unissued forms from the major private trading banks and overprinted (superscribed) them as Government treasury notes. Each note was dated December 1, 1910 and signed: Jas R. Collins Accountant and George T. Allen Secretary to the Treasury. Type 4b E.S.&A notes engraved by Sands & McDougall Limited were superscribed in all denominations.

The Commercial Bank of Sydney had notes ready to issue soon after it opened. The well preserved Specimen featured here was printed by W. & A.K. Johnston, Edinburgh as an example of a banknote to be issued for circulation. Specimens were usually archived or presented to VIPs. Many of the banks that produced them went broke or were taken over by their competitors during Australia’s 1893 financial crisis.

Only in recent decades have these often intricately engraved issues surfaced.

From 1817 to 1910 banknotes in Australia were issued by private trading banks and the Queensland Government.

Superscribed notes payable in gold were issued until 1913 when the first distinctive Commonwealth of Australia series was introduced. The London Bank was one of 16 banks to supply blank notes for superscribing.

Established in London in 1852, The London Chartered Bank of Australia’s first Australian offices opened in Melbourne and Sydney in 1853. In its first years of operation Melbourne’s note issue was far greater than that of the Sydney branch.

It suspended payment in 1893 but reconstructed as the “London Bank of Australia Limited” the same year.

A major US auction gallery recently announced the 10 highest-valued, non-US coins struck in copper, bronze or brass, ever sold by the company. Australia snared four of the places on the esteemed list, a feat no other country accomplished.

All four places went to Proof pennies, including a Perth Mint example, clearly demonstrating the prominence of our Proof coinage as foremost rarities maintaining a dominant position in the world numismatic market.

A major consignment of Australian Pre-Decimal Proofs, including a 1953 Perth Halfpenny and Penny Proof, resulted in lively bidding and outstanding sale prices at a major international auction back in 2007.

A Superb Example of the Master Minter’s Skills

Considering the diminutive size of the humble threepence was inclined to cause production problems, the master minter of the time has shown remarkable skill in striking the stunning Specimen example presented here in sublime FDC quality.

Specimens were exclusively struck in low numbers as an example of a given issue and retained in mint or public collection archives or presented to VIPs. They were generally hand struck from a brand new “working” die resulting in a brilliant, detailed strike.

Early proof issues were uniquely struck often many times from highly polished dies, resulting in a coin with either a frosted field or relief. The Perth Mint struck strictly limited numbers of Proofs during the George VI penny series’ issued from 1938 to 1952.

The Australian threepence was minted from 1910 until 1964. For the first five years it was minted at the Royal Mint London and at the Melbourne Mint from 1916 to 1920.

All were issued by either the Melbourne or Sydney mints and bore no mintmarks from 1922 to 1926.

The date the captivating Proof displayed here was minted is just as significant as the coin itself. The year 1938 was another defining moment in Australia’s coinage history. The Florin and other denominations were issued with a new and more distinctly Australian design, and George VI’s portrait appeared for the first time.

Coins struck at the Melbourne and Perth mints from 1955 were Australia’s first attempt to produce proof issues for commercial sale. Each mint was responsible for the sale of its own proof coins with Perth only retailing the bronze and Melbourne the silver issues. The mints sold individual proof coins and sets to the collecting public from 1955 until the final issue in 1963. Even back then these limited issue proofs were highly prized and sold at a premium.

A Rare and Mighty Little Coin ~ Less than 50 Known

Proofs were hand-struck at the start of a mintage then became a special sample, kept as an example of each mintage. The florin was the first of the distinctive Australian Commonwealth coins introduced in Australia in 1910.

All were initially struck in England and then at the Sydney, Melbourne or San Francisco Mints. The GVI florin issues 1938 to 1952 were struck at the latter two.

Pre-Decimals Offer a Level of Price Stability Few Mainstream Investments Can Match

New Zealand Specimens and Colour Trials Show Strong Demand and Market Results

Australia’s Pre-Decimal banknotes such as the issues featured here, all rare or very rare in their grades, have offered investors a tangible asset that has continued to steadily climb in value over many decades. Quality George V banknotes need no introduction as a premier investment and collectable, demonstrating sustained price growth over many years. Premium Pre-Decimal issues have earned great respect in world numismatics. In 2009 a London auction house offered a set of six Specimen notes so important they were allocated their own catalogue. The 10 shilling formed part of the King George V Gold Bearing Series 1923 to 1933. The wording ‘HALF SOVEREIGN’ helped differentiate the note from other denominations.

The BNZ’s Fourth “Commerce” Issue (1888-1889) incorporated traditional prosperity symbols. A beautifully preserved rarity that will prove to be a wonderful asset to any investment portfolio or private collection! The BNZ had a policy of updating lower denominations leaving higher ones in use. Four printers were used, but primarily Bradbury Wilkinson & Co from 1870.

Star notes, produced to replace a note spoilt or damaged during the printing process, are considered rare, especially in higher grades.

They have consistently performed extremely well since their debut in the 1940s and today’s buyers are vigilant in their efforts to secure the finest examples. The arrival of counting machines heralded the end of the star note system in 1971.

World interest in NZ’s Pre-Decimal Specimen banknotes has reached new levels due to their limited availability, future price potential, quality and often detailed designs. The year 1934 marked the introduction of a new £10 note design, which included a modified Coat-of-Arms, Prince of Wales watermark portrait and “Agriculture’ theme. This note formed part of the Legal Tender series 1934 to 1940 and Third Ash printer issue.
