Specimen banknotes, produced as an example of a given issue, were often works of art in themselves, created by some of the worlds most eminent engraving companies.

This superb Specimen engraved by Perkins, Bacon & Co., London is a glorious example.

Specimens produced by this and other private trading banks of the time were only printed as an example of a given issue for note printing archives or presentation to VIPs, making any appearance on today’s market all the more remarkable.

This bank was responsible for the issue of Australia’s first standardised currency backed by assets. The 1850’s Victorian gold rush put the bank in danger of exceeding the legal maximum issue of notes allowed.

This bank issued two types of notes with some variations.

Almost all of the Type Two notes printed by Bradbury Wilkinson & Co., included rainbow coloured antiforgery printing on the back.

It caused a severe drain on its note issue, so it began issuing notes to the amount limited by that of its paid up capital and coin or bullion holdings.

The bank opened a principal office in Melbourne and branches in Sydney and Brisbane. In its first years of operation, Melbourne note issue was far greater than that of Sydney.

Bank of Queensland (Brisbane Office 1863-1866)

Four note types were issued by this bank, each revealing interesting variations that make them an inspiring series to acquire.

Various banknotes printed by Perkins Bacon & Co., and Batho & Co., London for the Bank of Queensland featured the branch of issue on the front, as shown on the extremely rare and beautifully preserved Specimen presented here.

This London-based bank established a main office in Brisbane in 1863. The bank initially prospered, increasing note circulation significantly between 1863 and 1865.

However, due to its involvement with various other companies which failed and the collapse of a key London bank, it too failed and suspended payment in 1866.

The National Bank of Australia Limited (1858-1982)

The first was engraved by Sands & Kenny, Melbourne, the second by Perkins Bacon & Co., London and the remainder by Bradbury Wilkinson & Co., London.

The later featured a different portrait of a female for each of the Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth domiciles.

The Melbourne-based bank opened one of its first branches in Adelaide. With more than half its shareholders living in SA, the Adelaide branch nearly rivaled Victoria.

Our First Distinctively Australian Coin

Limited Production Heightens Demand

Struck during strategic periods in Australia’s history including Federation, World War I and II and the Great Depression, the historic appeal of the Florin will never wane. Its large size, weight and wonderful design detail also make it prized in most grades.

Issued in significantly smaller numbers during World War I, Australian coins such as the Halfpenny were well used and worn, so to discover any today in higher grades is astounding. Displaying rich red and brown tones, the featured coin affords a prime opportunity for the investor or specialised collector.

Introduced in 1910, the inimitable florin heralded the arrival of our first distinctively Australian Commonwealth coins. They were minted until 1963 with the George V obverse featured from 1911 to 1936.

Australia’s first copper pennies and halfpennies were issued in 1911 to complete the already circulating set of silver denominations. George V appeared on the coins for the first time.

The Royal Mint, London and Birmingham Mint, formerly Heaton’s Mint, struck the first florins between 1910 and 1915. The Birmingham issues carried the “H” (Heaton) mintmark and the Royal Mint issues had no mark.

1923 George V Halfpenny ~ Key Date

Struck Exclusively by The Melbourne Mint All Florins were struck at the Melbourne Mint from 1916 to 1919 inclusively and featured the “M” (Melbourne) mintmark. The rare example displayed is presented in one of the highest and most sought after grades in numismatics, representing a superb opportunity for the astute investor or collector.

It reveals a strong strike with great eye appeal.

The George V obverse was designed by well known coin designer Sir Edgar. B MacKennal and the reverse coat of arms was by fellow artist W.H. J Blackemore.

After 1919, florins were mostly minted at either the Melbourne or Sydney mints, except during World War II when the San Francisco Mint assisted the Melbourne Mint to produce some of the 1942 to 1944 coins. All further issues from 1945 to 1963 were struck at the Melbourne Mint and did not carry a mintmark.

While many notes were often printed ready for issue they were not always circulated due to changes in economic circumstances or Government policy. They were destroyed with the exception of a few samples retained as records, some of which eventually found their way onto the market.

Hailing from the Bank of NZ, the most prolific issuer of NZ notes until 1934, its design is similar to the third type of this denomination issued in 1873 and the sixth issued from 1902 to 1916.

By 1865, the BNZ had issued more than twice the number of notes of the second largest bank, and dominated the country’s banking scene when this figure eventually rose to more than three times.

The Bank of NSW opened an office in Auckland, NZ in 1861 and four other branches.

The Colonial Bank of New Zealand (1874-1895) Only surfacing in recent decades, Printer’s Proofs have had a significant impact in the numismatic marketplace as a tried and tested favourite of astute buyers quick to realise their extreme rarity, high growth performance and heritage value.

Unique in banking records, these valuable examples were normally uniface, printed on card as a proposed design for a note and then sent to the banks for final approval.

A Rare Specimen from the Last of the Uniform Issues The large and interesting issue of BNZ banknotes ended with the attractive and high quality Bradbury Wilkinson Uniform Issue, featuring the portrait of the Maori King Tawhiao, which was retained for the first Reserve Bank issue after 1934.

BNZ banknotes are amongst the most numerous in variety. The bank had a policy of updating lower denominations leaving higher ones in use.

Shillings of Charles II’s reign are fascinating and challenging partly due to the dates featured and wide variety of provenance marks indicating the origin of the metal used.

The George I (Reign 1698-1727) Half Crown is considered a handsome coin and although only produced over a short period, featured a number of interesting varieties, including this exceptional example.

Charles II’s reign (1660-1685) marked the end of the ancient technique of hand hammering coins and the arrival of the first ‘milled coinage’ using hand powered presses. The coin became known as the shilling during the reign of Edward VI (1547-1553) and mintage continued regularly after that.

The series was redesigned to accommodate the Hanoverian accession.

The reverse included an abbreviated form of the new German-born king’s titles. George I was King of Great Britain and Ireland from 1714 to 1727 and ruled Hanover during the Holy Roman Empire from 1698.

He inherited the English throne on a technicality.
