One of the Rarest Numismatic Prizes Less than 11 Examples Known to Exist!

Commonwealth of Australia star notes represent one of the most active areas of numismatic investing, driving demand to new levels and creating exciting potential for future price growth. They were issued in limited numbers and quickly acquired by passionate collectors in the early days of their production. It’s not surprising that they are now greeted with such a sense of occasion and wave of competitive bidding when they become available.

The King George VI one pound star note with the Armitage / McFarlane signature combination was issued from March 1942 to August 1949. The monarch’s reign saw a new banknote series issued in various denominations from 1938 to 1954.

Between 1942 and 1971 star (replacement) notes were especially printed to replace notes damaged or spoilt during the printing process. Pre-decimal notes had a proper five-pointed star to replace the last digit of the serial number on each note while decimal notes featured an asterisk. Bundles of 100 notes remained in sequence making counting easier.

Taylor’s Tokens ~ Elusive Rarities A Very Rare Example!

Proof tokens struck by British entrepreneur William Joseph Taylor are amongst the most keenly pursued of all Australian numismatic treasures. Taylor was a highly skilled craftsman, which is reflected in the fine striking of the Proof token offered here, one of his early efforts, in sublime Fleur De Coin (FDC) grade.

Taylor’s Proof tokens are highly regarded and valued by numismatic collectors and investors around the globe.

News of gold discoveries in Victoria prompted engraver, die-sinker and coin dealer Taylor, to bring a coining press and dies out on the chartered ship “Kangaroo” in 1853 and establish The Kangaroo Office. The venture was doomed from the start due to delays in assembling the press, rising gold values and large quantities of sovereigns arriving from London. Undaunted, Taylor continued to produce dies for a shilling and sixpence back in London in 1855, his first attempt at producing Australian coinage. The Kangaroo office closed in 1857.

A Rare Discovery in this Premium Condition A few Canadian provinces issued their own coinage during the early years of Canada’s history, and Newfoundland was one of the most productive. It released an extensive coin series, with most issues having quite low mintages.

Pre-1920 coins circulated extensively, and many seen today are either very worn, damaged, or both, so to secure exquisite specimens is often difficult, highlighting the rarity of coins offered here, which have been professionally graded, authenticated and individually slabbed. The 50 cent coin was the “workhorse” coin of its day. It was very popular and assumed importance after the failure of two key Newfoundland banks during the 1894 financial crisis.

Decimal coins were introduced to Newfoundland in 1865, but pound notes continued to be used for many years afterwards. It wasn’t until 1877 that a law was passed that required Newfoundland Government accounts to be kept in dollars and cents.

The first regular issue of Newfoundland coins consisted of a one, five, ten and 20 cent coin, and two dollar gold coin. A 50 cent piece was introduced in 1870, and a 25 cent replaced the 20 cent in 1917 because of public confusion between the Canadian 25 cent and the Newfoundland 20 cent piece. All Newfoundland coins minted before 1917 were struck at either the Tower Mint in London, if they have no

mintmark, or at the Ralph Heaton & Sons Mint, in Birmingham, if they bear the ‘H’ mintmark. To acquire just one Specimen coin is considered special, so to secure a set of five is truly astounding.

The Bank of Adelaide, South Australia (1865-1980)

The Commercial Bank of Australia (1866-1982)

During the nineteenth century many private banks, including The Bank of Adelaide, issued their own notes and produced specimens in very small numbers to mark the intended release of a new banknote for circulation.

Chinese inscription appeared on the sides of this bank’s notes as a result of gold purchased from the large population of Chinese miners working on the Victorian Goldfields in the 1860’s.

Despite the 1890’s banking crisis when many financial institutions collapsed, this trading bank remained sound and continued to produce notes including the fine example displayed here printed by London engravers Bradbury Wilkinson & Co.

The “C.B.A.” was formed to provide banking and monetary support to large and important classes of the community. It grew to become a major player in Australia, but its extensive advancing of funds with Melbourne building societies and their collapse caused suspension of trading in 1893.

The bank formed the Finance Corporation of Australia Ltd in 1955, but was absorbed by the ANZ in 1980 after heavy investment in land speculation backfired when values dropped.

Having the opportunity to buy such a prestigious banknote seems incredible considering most specimens ended up hidden away in banking archives or on special occasions were presented to VIP’s.

Specimen notes were occasionally used for special presentation purposes and it’s only through such events that they have very rarely found their way onto the numismatic market.

This bank only issued one type of note in denominations of £1, £5, £10, £20 and £50. They were domiciled in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide. The notes printed

by Sands & McDougall, Engravers, Melbourne, bore a remarkable resemblance to those of the Australian & European Bank. Victorian Premier James Munro M.P. was the bank’s first managing director. The 1893 financial crisis forced the bank’s closure.

The Federal Bank opened its first office in Melbourne in 1881. When it opened a branch in Sydney, another newly formed bank, the Sydney and County Bank Limited transferred all its business over to the Federal. The Federal also took over the assets of the Australian Economic Bank and opened a branch in London in 1887 and one in Adelaide in 1888. The bank was forced to suspended payment due to the 1893 banking crisis and never reopened.

The Bank of Australasia (1835-1951) London Head Office

Not only are Proofs made using specially treated dies, each coin is struck two or more times by the coin die, resulting in a brilliant strike.

In 1863 this bank introduced a new banknote design which, with modifications, continued until 1910 when it was superscribed by the Australian Government.

From 1863 all denominations had a printed back, but from 1877 the backs of the one pound were blank so they could be readily distinguishable from other values.

Printer’s proofs intended as a proposed design for a note, were sent to banks for final approval but remained the property of the engraver.

The Australasia was an ‘Imperial’ bank as it originated in Britain but operated primarily through overseas branches.

The first branches opened in Sydney, Launceston and then Hobart. It became the ANZ Bank Limited in 1951.

The Melbourne Mint issued the bulk of halfpennies from 1923 and for the rest of the series. The reverse design was changed to the familiar “Flying Kangaroo” in the later part of 1939, although only limited numbers were released as most issued for that year still featured the old, somewhat outdated George V reverse design.

1935 George V Penny Proof

The Commercial Bank of Tasmania (1829-1921)

Grade: about FDC

This was one of the longest operating Tasmanian banks of the 19th century.

Established as the Commercial Bank in 1829 by former shopkeeper John Dunn, it converted to a joint stock bank in 1832, and then became the Commercial Bank of Tasmania and second oldest bank in Australasia. It was absorbed by the E.S. & A. Bank in 1921.

The Commercial Bank’s first note series engraved by Thomas Bock, of Hobart was very plain with one vignette while the second printed by Perkins Bacon & Petch, London had a heavy border and vignette of a woman and sailing ship.

As one of the most respected and admired of the Pre-Decimal silver series, the Australian Florin is in big demand.

The series was minted from 1910 until 1963, initially at the Royal Mint, London and then mostly at either the Melbourne or Sydney Mints, except during World War II when some were minted in the USA. The King George V obverse was struck between 1911 and 1936.

An Extremely Rare Specimen Presenting a magnificent Melbourne Mint Specimen featuring the famous design of St George slaying the dragon.

The Veiled Head series portraying a mature Queen Victoria was produced from 1893 to 1901. Mints challenged to keep pace with the monarch’s 64 year reign were required to produced two other key designs during her long rule. The Young Head portrait featured from 1838 to 1887 and Jubilee Head, introduced to mark Victoria’s 50th year on the throne, was issued from 1887 to 1893.

Proclamation Coin

Coins from Australia’s Currency Proclamation of 1800 represent an important part of the nation’s earliest colonial heritage and are highly regarded and sought after by specialist numismatic collectors. Circulating extensively in early Australian settlements, they included a wonderful array of coinage from around the world now targeted by collectors, historians and investors alike.

In 1800, the Governor of the Colony of New South Wales, Philip King, issued a proclamation that ultimately failed, fixing the values of certain circulating coinage to retain coin in the new colony and stop it from being removed by traders.

Most of the goods would have been shipped into the young colonies by traders, who after selling their products would have left the country taking their currency with them, leaving shortages in circulating coinage.

Prized Quality New Zealand Printer’s Proofs

Inflated Zimbabwe Banknotes ~ In Hot Demand

Printers Proofs are treasured rarities in their own right, however, the intricate engravings offered here hold another very rare aspect seldom seen and very elusive. These superb notes feature the imperial crest showing the Unicorn facing right as opposed to the traditional design facing left. As such, these rarities have become in strong demand, attracting fierce competition when appearing at auction and no wonder, when only ten examples in each denomination are known to exist.

Recent reforms to Zimbabwe banknote values make previous issues all the more interesting to collect. To combat inflation and foster economic growth, printing of the Zimbabwe dollar banknotes was abandoned this year.

The currency won’t be re-introduced until 2010. Zimbabwe is now pegged to the US dollar. The now obsolete Zimbabwe trillion dollar note, the world’s biggest denomination, has proved a huge hit with collectors.

In Numbers Less Than 10

National Bank of New Zealand Limited (Banknotes Issued 1872-Present) Incorporated in London in 1872, the NBNZ was the third largest note issuer until 1934 and is the only bank in Australasia to have continued with the same name it started with. Notes were all printed in London by Perkins Bacon & Co and the designs were very plain, virtually staying the same for every issue.
