An Australian Numismatic Pioneer

The 1813 New South Wales Holey Dollar

Taking pride of place in an Australian numismatic collection is the extremely rare and highly sought after 1813 New South Wales Colonial Holey Dollar. Almost 40,000 of these magnificent coins and their ‘Dump’ counterpart were issued to the new colony in 1814 by Governor Lachlan Macquarie as a strategy to dramatically increase the number of coins in circulation thereby quashing the rum trade and solving the currency crisis in one inspired move. They remained in circulation until 1829, when Sterling currency was re-imposed at which time 27,161 of the dollars and 10,103 of the dumps were shipped back to London to be melted down and sold off as bullion silver. Of the 300 Holey Dollars still known to exist today 100 are permanently consigned to museums and private collections, which underscores the likelihood that opportunities to secure these historically significant numismatic rarities are destined to be a once in a generation opportunity not to be missed.

This 1949 George VI Five Pound Specimen Note is one of only a few specimen issues known in private hands and as such is a rarity of major significance to Australian numismatics. The note has two very different and very distinct cancellations. Perforated across the signatures of the note is the word ‘CANCELLED’. A second cancellation has been added with two black diagonal lines on both sides of the note. The specimen cancellations are significant in that they represent one of a very small number of specimen issues officially presented to VIP’s of the time. This magnificent banknote rarity bears the signature of Dr Herbert C. Coombs (1906-1997), arguably one of Australia’s most distinguished public servants. Coombs was originally presented with this note during his tenure as Governor of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia and Governor of the Reserve Bank, a role which he held from 1949 to 1968. As some of the most important banknotes of our time, seldom do you see specimen banknotes of this rarity and quality become available for private sale. This 1949 George VI Five Pound Specimen Note is a highly important piece of Australia’s numismatic history and a compelling investment in its own right.

As The Rare Coin Company enters its 26th year in business, we look back with pride at our achievements - some making news headlines in more recent months while others, on the road to success over the years, were quietly celebrated.

The Rare Coin Company PO Box 829 Albany WA 6331

In November 2007, The Rare Coin Company achieved a milestone for Australian numismatics by successfully securing the 1924 Kell Collins £1000 banknote, unique in private hands, for a record price of $1.2 million. This was undoubtedly the highlight of our 25th anniversary year, claiming what could only be described as the ultimate prize in Australian banknotes. This super, heritage listed rarity was sold to a client after a brief media interlude before once again being safely secured in the deep recesses of the vault.

“The story of how Australian currency notes have evolved since Federation is a fascinating one. At the Reserve Bank of Australia we thought it important enough to establish the Museum of Australian Currency Notes in our Head Office building in Sydney. This volume, which brings an international and historical perspective to the story, adds significant new information, and a refreshing new viewpoint. ... I have no hesitation in recommending this book, both to the general reader and to the numismatist, as a fascinating account of the evolution of the Australian currency.”

Proven Paper Banknote Performers! With the introduction of the decimal banknote system on 14th February 1966 came a new era in Australia’s numismatic history with the now highly valued paper note making its debut. The ‘Commonwealth of Australia’ banner was issued until 1974 when it was replaced with the current ‘Australia’ standard. During this brief period only four signature combinations were used including the 1966 Coombs/Wilson format as featured on the superb set below, which together with its uncirculated condition and matching 000913 serial numbers, guarantees its future price potential.
