1758-1845 Great Britain Coinage Set Forming Part of Australia’s Proclamation Era Governor Philip Gidley’s King’s Proclamation of 1800 set the stage for the period in Australian numismatic history known as ‘The Proclamation Era’ and was so called because this period identified those coins which could be traded as legal tender in the fledgling New South Wales monetary system. Prior to the Proclamation settlers reverted to the age-old system of bartering and occasionally made do with whatever British or foreign coins came to hand and often coins were traded for their face value in weight rather than the generally accepted ‘face value’.

Historical Note: Antonia was the daughter of Marc Antony and Octavia, wife of Nero Claudius Drusus, sister-in-law of Tiberius, mother of Claudius, and grandmother of Caligula. Renowned for her beauty and virtue, Antonia spent her long life revered by the Roman people and enjoyed many honours conferred upon her by her extended family. All her coinage was issued early in the reign of Claudius. She died around 37 A.D., possibly as a result of forced suicide ordered by Caligula.

Historical Note: Nero became emperor at sixteen.

Rome was relatively peaceful under Nero’s reign. He is most famous for his alleged actions during The Great Fire of Rome which erupted in 64AD. Popular legend claims that Nero played the fiddle at the time of the fire, an anachronism based merely on the concept of the lyre, which was associated with Nero and his performances. According to Tacitus, upon hearing news of the fire, Nero rushed back to Rome to organize a relief effort, which he paid for from his own funds. Tacitus held that the population searched for a scapegoat and rumours held Nero responsible.

To diffuse blame, Nero targeted a sect called the Christians. He ordered Christians to be thrown to the dogs, while others were crucified and burned.

Historical Note: De Nationale Bank der Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek was opened by the Republic’s President Paul Kruger in 1891. The bank prospered, and the passage of a Mint Act that same year provided for a coinage of gold, silver and bronze modeled after that of Great Britain. President Kruger’s portrait appeared on each coin’s obverse, with the country’s name in Afrikaans inscribed in an arc around the periphery.
