Strong auctions have dominated the numismatic scene in March and April seeing record prices continue to demonstrate that demand for both coin and banknote rarities has anything but slowed and for buyers today, it seems that all price barriers are meant to be broken.

The Rare Coin Company was extremely proud to secure the 1924 Kell Collins One Thousand Pound Note in November 2007 at the then record price for an Australian note of $1.2 million. Incredibly within a few short months, this amazing record was broken yet again.

When International Auction Galleries held its sale last month some impressive new world records were set. Along with a superb selection of rare Australian pre decimal notes which surpassed all expectations, the ultimate prize in this major auction was the number one (M0000001) 1913 Collins Allen Ten Shilling note which set the market ablaze selling for a world record price of $1.909 million.

Being the first distinctive Commonwealth note to be printed in Australia in 1913, it’s not surprising this lot attracted tense bidding in the room. This super rare Australian banknote set an enthralling new benchmark about 8 years ago when it was privately sold in Sydney for a record breaking price of $1 million. Selling with relative ease at its new record price recently demonstrates – not only the market’s ability to attract compelling investment competition, but also the significant level of maturity being activated within Australia’s numismatic market today.

As this edition goes to print, the prices realized report hasn’t yet been released for Nobles auction which has just been held in Sydney, but the word out is that this too has been an extremely strong sale with prices for coin rarities such as Kookaburra Pennies and high quality pre decimal coins once again, adjusting to demand.

Scarce and Desirable Silver Coinage from 15 Century England th

For the discerning collector of coins from this early period, this selection will no doubt be a tempting proposition!

Charles II (Charles Stuart; 29 May 1630 – 6 February 1685) was the King of England, Scotland, and Ireland. When his father Charles I was executed at Whitehall on 30 January 1649 at the climax of the English Civil War, the English Parliament did not proclaim Charles II, passing a statute making it unlawful, and England entered the period known to history as the English Interregnum. The Parliament of Scotland, on the other hand, proclaimed Charles II King of Scots on 5 February 1649 in Edinburgh. He was crowned King of Scots at Scone on 1 January 1651. Following his defeat at the Battle of Worcester on 3 September 1651, Charles fled to the continent and spent the next nine years in exile in France, the United Provinces and the Spanish Netherlands.

After the Protectorate collapsed under Richard Cromwell in 1659, General George Monck invited Charles to return and assume the thrones in what became known as the Restoration. Charles II arrived on English soil on 25 May 1660 and entered London on his thirtieth birthday, 29 May 1660. Charles was crowned King of England and Ireland at Westminster Abbey on 23 April 1661.

Anne (6 February 1665 – 1 August 1714) became Queen of England, Scotland and Ireland on 8 March 1702 and reigned for twelve years until her death in August 1714.

The phrase William and Mary refers to the joint sovereignty over the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland, of King William III and his wife Queen Mary II. Their joint reign began in February, 1689, when they were called to the throne

by Parliament and lasted until Mary died in 1694.

Their rule was the only period in British history in which “joint sovereigns” with equal powers were allowed to reign; usually, the spouse of the monarch has no power and is simply a consort.

This only applies to selected items in the catalogue where Liquidation Guarantees are indicated. Purchases of under $10,000 do not attract annual revaluations.

New and past issues from The Perth Mint and the Royal Australian Mint along with items for offer in the back of this catalogue do not carry a Liquidation Guarantee. However we are always buying quality items for resale!
