FOUR GREAT COMPETITIONS A CSI EXPERIENCE

First Aid to Help Save Lives

Would you know what to do in a medical emergency, or how to help someone with their mental health?

Fenland First Aid has trained thousands of people in a variety of first aid subjects in the Peterborough area during the last 21 years. Director Deborah Slator says, ‘Our customers return to us because we ensure that they get the quality of training that they are paying for. We also support our local charity Defibrillators For All and through our training have inspired many companies to provide defibrillators for their staff.’

According to the latest data from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) The UK lost 17 million working days to work-related stress, depression or anxiety in the year 2021 to 2022 so Fenland First Aid have added Mental Health First Aid training to their portfolio of courses.

‘First aid is not only for physical injuries but also to help with our mental wellbeing,’ says Deborah. ‘We need to be able to express ourselves and understand that people react differently to situations. Mental health first aid training gives us the knowledge to build coping mechanisms, support those in crisis and signpost people for further help when needed.’

Welcome Back!

The season of misty mornings, pumpkins, fireworks, conkers and the odd ghoul always enthused me as a child and still does to this day. Yes, it’s colder and darker but that Ready Brek ‘glow’ still lives long in my memory.

In this issue we explore all things pumpkins and the local events that are on in our area. There are so many different carving styles and patterns it always amazes me how creative parents and children are. From Shrek to Star Wars, and I can imagine this year even the odd Barbie carving may all be seen on Halloween.

Our first Community Club Awards winners partnered by Hegarty Solicitors have also been announced. We are proud to publish the winners and wish to thank all those who sent in nominations. These clubs are varied but all have a common objective of developing and enhancing our children’s lives.

Lastly in this issue we have four great competitions to enter. From books to toys, tickets and even one special CSI workshop prize, your teachers can experience for themselves. See page 8 for more details. Wishing you a great autumn with fun all the way!

SOLICITORS

And the Winners Are…

In the last issue of Term Times we launched our first Community Club Awards in partnership with Hegarty Solicitors and asked you to nominate the clubs, organisations and people who make a huge

Out of the many nominations received, we are pleased to announce our three worthy winners.

Gold: Peterborough Police Boxing Club

Our Gold Award goes to Peterborough Police Boxing Club nominated by parent Leah Clifford whose own children attend the club.

The club wins £200 and will use it to promote female boxing and get more females involved in the sport which is still largely male dominated. Vicki says, ‘Being nominated by a parent shows just how much boxing has had a positive impact on their child's home-life and education. This makes us feel proud to work in the heart of the community with so many young people.’

On Saturday 7 October they have a boxing show at the Queen Katharine Academy, Mountsteven Avenue in Peterborough. This will showcase all local fighters from the club in a family and community event. Tickets are available on the door which opens at 2.30pm.

Silver: Little Miracles South Holland

Leah told us, ‘They really do change young people’s lives; they spend many evenings a week and most weekends doing things for the club, all for no credit or recognition. They are simply amazing.’

Peterborough Police Boxing Club was set up in 2013 by police officers Chris Baker and wife Vicki Baker. The club aims to divert young people away from crime and anti-social behaviour by giving them a positive activity. They now run sessions four nights a week and often have boxers in competitions at the weekends. Children can start competing from the age of 10.

Club Secretary and Coach Vicki Baker says, ‘Boxing really shapes the lives of young people by teaching them discipline and respect. A number of our boxers have won the national championships and have gone on to box for England.

‘In boxing, anyone can achieve – whether it’s having a healthier lifestyle, gaining confidence or wanting to compete. What we consider small wins are often huge benefits for a young person and their family.’

Our Silver Award winners are Little Miracles South Holland which was nominated for the support it gives families that have children with additional needs and disabilities.

‘Now we have survived the extensive programme for the summer holidays we are working towards plans for October Half Term and Christmas and creating a programme suitable for all ages and all needs, and the financial contribution towards this from this award will help make this so much easier.’

Bronze: Beat This C.I.C

The winners of our Bronze Award are Beat This C.I.C from Peterborough, nominated by Dee Trajdos for providing amazing music sessions for home-educated children.

The charity offers support through a variety of services such as activities, family support, trips and counselling. In December 2022 they opened a new Disability Support Centre complete with sensory room which has made a huge difference to the number of families they can help. The charity has won £150. Elizabeth Batterham from the charity says, ‘We are absolutely thrilled to have been chosen for this award.

Hegarty Solicitors | Legal support for business, for you, for life.

Dee told us, ‘My children enjoy music makers and weekly Little Chimes sessions. They have a brilliant and unique approach to working with children, especially with children with SEND.’ Beat This is a Community Interest Company (or CIC), which is a social enterprise with a conscience. They use music and technology to help children, young people, adults and people with additional needs develop skills, interact and express themselves through music. They also provide professional development to their practitioners and volunteers.

They have won £50 and Benny Turner from Beat This says, ‘Many of the people that we support are disengaged from mainstream society or education. The funding received from Hegarty Solicitors will go towards helping us to develop a new multi-sensory experience for young people with complex needs.’

Our experienced and accomplished team of solicitors and legal advisors can put you, your business and your family in a strong position for the future. Learn to Swim with Billie’s Fins

Billie’s Fins is a private swim school where they pride themselves on creating a welcoming, fun yet professional environment. It’s a happy and safe space where swimmers of all ages can flourish.

• Lessons Run 7 Days per Week

• Baby Swim

• Private and Group Lessons

• Fitness Classes (16+)

• SEN and Disability Swimming

• Adult One-to-One Lessons

• Two Teachers per Class in the Pool

Swimming lessons give youngsters the confidence to achieve their goals not only in the water but also in everyday life and Billie’s Fins Swim School already provides this for over 1400 swimmers each week.

The swim school runs at two locations, their own pool in Pinchbeck which has been purpose built, as well as at Eye C of E Primary School. The water is a comfortable 33 degrees and from baby swim classes from 3+ months through to Level 6, all ages can learn to be at ease in the water, improve or even learn to compete. Baby

swim for 3+ months is available at Pinchbeck and lessons start from 18 months in Eye. Small class sizes ensure everyone gets the attention they need from expert tutors. In addition they can also offer one-to-one teaching.

Schools, nurseries and groups can rent the pool for swimming lessons; fitness classes and evening lane swimming sessions are also available as well as private hire.

New Hoist Ready for Use

SEN and Disability swimming is fully catered for with qualified teachers, separate changing facilities and now a new hoist is available for swimmers with limited mobility.

The addition of the new hoist opens up the benefits of swimming to even more adults and children with limited mobility. As the pool runs at 33° it’s perfect for anyone who is rehabilitating, and for individuals that need a warmer pool.

It’s hoped it will have wider benefits with NHS groups also making use of it and they welcome any physiotherapists that would like to use the hoist for rehabilitation. This great new addition to the facilities has been made possible through the fundraising efforts of swimmers, parents and the Billie’s Fins team along with a very generous donation from a parent.

Pumpkin Fun this Halloween

The creativity and ingenuity some people put into their Halloween pumpkin designs is incredible these days – just take a look on the internet – but a simple Jack-O’-Lantern doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective. It’s a good way to keep the kids busy and a craft activity all the family can enjoy.

• Always supervise children and do any difficult cutting yourself

• You could invest in a pumpkin carving kit but an ice cream scoop will help when removing the flesh

• Choose a pumpkin that’s not too rough, heavy or thick skinned so it’s easier to carve and a flat bottom will help it stand level

• Use a stencil to stick on the front and trace the outline by punching small holes into the skin to make sure you cut in the right place

• An LED tealight is safer than a candle and will create an eerie glow to bring your lantern to life

Despite appearing in many ‘giant vegetable’ competitions, pumpkins are actually a fruit but are often consumed as soup or pumpkin pie. The pumpkins bought for carving aren’t usually as tasty as those varieties specifically grown to eat.

Although the orange pumpkin is popular for making lanterns, they come in a variety of colours and the hundreds of seeds they produce are nutritious and rich in antioxidants, those you buy as a snack have been hulled and roasted.

Free places for parents in this year’s Anna’s Hope 5k Fun Run

A shared experience with the family makes lasting memories so why not take part in the Anna’s Hope 5k Fun Run in Peterborough this October?

On Sunday 15 October thousands of runners will participate in the Great Eastern Run, one of the major events in the region. This year there is an exciting change to the route where runners will run through the grounds of Peterborough Cathedral.

While serious runners opt for the half marathon, the fun run is perfect for families and schools and there are free places available with Anna’s Hope. In addition to free places for children under 16 the charity is also offering free places in the fun run for adults so parents and teachers can also run with the children. All they ask is that for each free entry, each runner raises at least £30 which

will help fund one specialist therapy session for a child with a brain tumour.

Anna’s Hope is also encouraging schools to enter the Schools' Challenge where there are trophies for any school that raises over £250 for the charity and for the schools raising the most money there are prizes of Usborne Books (provided by The Little Book Snug in partnership with Usborne).

You can walk if you wish because the aim of the fun run is to have fun and raise funds for your favourite charity if you can.

Carole Hughes from Anna’s Hope said, ‘It is an amazing day which starts with a mass warm up

on the Embankment and ends with smiles on everyone’s face as they collect their medal at the end of the run, then celebrate with their friends. We love to meet runners and supporters of Anna’s Hope once again at our marquee for cake and a drink.’

The run is a major fundraiser for many charities where thousands of pounds are raised. Carole adds, ‘We really appreciate those who raise money through sponsorship to help make a difference to the lives of children in the region diagnosed with a brain tumour.’

The last date to register for free places in the fun run is 5 October.

Get on Track with Kip McGrath

A new term has started but the long summer break can mean your child’s knowledge has lapsed during all the fun away from the school routine. Kip McGrath Peterborough can help to blow those summer cobwebs away!

Thinking of an Assessment at Kip McGrath Peterborough?

Whether your child needs support to get back on track, are working towards GCSE’s, are struggling in a particular area of their learning or 11+ entrance exams, Kip McGrath Peterborough can help. They specialise in personalised tuition to support your child’s goals. Booking a free assessment will inform you and your child of what they need to focus on and their fully qualified teachers will support them in getting there.

Booking a Free Assessment

The best way to book a free assessment is by visiting their website. You can choose from either of their two centres at a time and date that is convenient for you. Confirmation with regular reminders will be sent to you.

There is nothing to prepare, they provide everything needed for the assessment, just turn up. If you wish to discuss the assessment beforehand, call the centre during working hours and their friendly, informative management team will be happy to help.

What Happens During an Assessment?

You will be met by a member of the team and start with a discussion about your reasons for booking the assessment. Your child or children will then complete a range of assessments depending on the queries, concerns or questions you bring on the day. This may include reading, comprehension, spelling and/or maths assessments to identify any gaps in their knowledge. You will be given important information to read and an enrolment form to complete. When the

assessment has ended, a member of their team will feedback the outcomes and together you will devise a personalised plan and goal for your child.

Looking Ahead

Once you complete the process and enrol your child for tuition - their lesson will be specifically tailored to their learning and the skills that they need to focus on in particular. Being taught 1:1 by a fully qualified teacher in a small group setting ensures they get reliable support as well as enhancing their confidence and independence too. Children are assessed regularly to ensure any gaps in their learning are closed and progress is being made. Sharing success with you and your child is a valuable part of the process.
