My passion is sustainability in the architectural built environment. I’ve held a variety of sustainability credentials, however I’m passionate about Passive House and LEED AP. Specifically, interested in the net-positive or carbon positive construction.

FROM THE CLIMATE ZONE LOCATION and using recommended PRESCRIPTIVE R-VALUE REQUIREMENTS, SIZED A APPROPRIATE THERMAL ENCLOSURE system AND chose appropriate windows based on orientation. A critical component was to define my Thermal (Orange), Air (Green), Water (Blue) Barriers to SHOW UNDERSTANDING of HOW TO manage moisture in the building envelope. FOR THE DESIGN PORTION OF THE PHIUS Certified Passive House Consultant Exam, DESIGNED A 3 bedroom disaster relief shelter in Fargo, North DakotA. used it as an opportunity to practice my design and revit skills. During initial project set up, was tasked with coordinating site Revit settings between the IL-AL&MC buildings. Civil and Landscape AutoCAD files are Referenced into THE Architectural Site AutoCAD file, WHICH IS THEN linked into the Revit file. For Continuity all site work was done in AutoCAD and linework is managed through object styles in Revit. The set up allows Civil and Landscape to work in their real world coordinate system minimizing issues with the Revit coordinate system. UNIT MODEL

THE UNIT MODELS ARE MADE TO MAXIMIZE CHANGES IN PROJECTS UNDER DEVELOPMENT WITH the CLIENT. EVERY PROJECT SHARES A THE SAME UNIT MODEL UNTIL A DETERMINED DATE; PERMIT OR EARLIER. the unit model reference planes note finish face, face of framing to locate the model in project. views are created that are tagged and dimensioned to be linked in later. any geometry with tags and descriptions are pre-populated in the model to fill schedules in the project file.

project model unit, kitchen, bathroom views are recreated in the project model for which the unit model views are linked. project specific reference and keynotes are added. TO MANAGE UNIT SPECIFIC PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS DESCRIPTIONS FROM THE UNIT model ARE MEANT TO BE GENERAL. A SPECIFIC SPREADSHEET IS GENERATED AND LINKED INTO THE PROJECT THAT TIES THE TYPE MARK AND DECSRIPTION OF APPLIANCES, FINISHES, and FIXTURES TO THE MODELED GEOMETRY. WHEN THE PROJECT GOES INTO PERMIT, CLIENT CHANGE DUE TO MARKET FACTORS, OR LESSONS LEARNED, tHE UNITS ARE either PACKAGED TO THE PROJECT TO “lock” them in or revised.

Steve duross and Worked through the FINALIZED A PROTOTYPE process INTO A bim workflow that is easily taught to multiple inexperience staff to manage and update during the architectural design process. when santulan partnered with headwaters group, a 55+ start up housing developer there was a need to systemtize the unit plans as they would be used across multiple projects. 12 unit model generations later, the units are fully coordinated across all disciplines as individual revit models to maximize

There are 11 residential buildings, a clubhouse, 6 garages, and a tenant storage building. as project manager, was tasked by the client to maintain a fast tracked igmp pricing deadline that included design review board review, a zoning process, along with pricing exercises by the client with only part time staff. This project benefited from building templates had built early for this client’s building typology.

RESIDENTIAL BUILDING MODEL WORKFLOW

from working with this client on earlier projects built project template of their residential buildings incorporating lessons learned. the project team customized the template bespoke to the project, modifiying and grouping geometry. in this case the 2 building color schemes of the residential buildings modeled for each color scheme and it’s derivatives simplified the model management, design changes, and documentation.

typ. residential building groundfloor plan - buildings no. 2, 5-7, 9-10 the systemizatizing of the residential buildings and the unit models allowed for us to show multiple floor plans based on specific unit layouts across the ground floors to meet the colorado revised statue title 9-5 and the distribution of the icc type a units across the site.

with work focused on adding project specific information or modification to pre-built sheets, the project could be minimumally staffed. later on as firm billings began to slow, it gave flexbility to complete a more thorough qa/qc earlier documentation cycle as staff became available. As this project is currently in permitting, there is hope that using lesson’s learned, systematizng the project where possible that allowed for earlier qa/qc will reduce the number of building permit reviews.

the design workflow permeated from hand drawing to revit. above are the 3 different views of the same elevation for the planning, design review, and permit. the intent was to remove the parallel workflows of revit and sketchup that hinder progress as the client wanted accelerated schedule to finalize construction pricing while still negotiating with planning and the design review board.
