GIST OF LESSON

India’s climate is controlled by a number of factors which can be broadly divided into two groups – (1) Factors related to location and relief (Latitude, The Himalayan Mountains, Distribution of Land and Water, Distance from the Sea, Altitude, Relief). (2) Factors related to air pressure and winds (air pressure and winds on the surface of the earth, Upper air circulation/ Jet stream, Western disturbances during the winter).

TECHNICAL TERMS

Weather, Climate, Monsoon, Tropical area, Land breeze and sea breeze.

RECAPITULATION

Weather is a temporary condition of temperature, pressure, wind direction and velocity, humidity and precipitation, etc. while the climate is more or less permanent condition. Indian climate is controlled by different factors like Latitude, The Himalayan Mountains, Distribution of Land and Water, Distance from the Sea, Altitude, Relief, Air pressure and winds on the surface of the earth, Upper air circulation/ Jet stream, Western disturbances during the winter etc.

CLASS WORK

1. What are different elements of Weather/Climate? 2. How the latitudinal location of India affects its climate?

HOME WORK

1. Why the coastal areas have an equable climate? 2. Agra and Darjiling are located on the same latitude, but temperature of January in Agra is 16°C whereas it is only 4°C in Darjiling. Give reason.

ASSIGNMENT

1. Draw the flow chart for factors affecting the climate of India.

Weather is the momentary state of the atmosphere while climate refers to the average of the weather conditions over a longer period of time. Weather changes quickly, may be within a day or week but climate changes imperceptively and may be noted after 50 years or even more. We drink more water during summers. We wear lighter clothes during summers and heavy woollen clothes during winters in north India. These changes occur due to the changes in the elements of weather (temperature, pressure, wind direction and velocity, humidity and precipitation, etc.). India has hot monsoonal climate which is the prevalent climate in south and southeast Asia.
