WELCOME

2022 was a watershed year for DIgnity and Services in several ways.It is my honour as chair of the Board to recognise this here, more details inside.

NEW BAKEWITH DIGNITY OUTLET

In August we opened the first Bake with Dignity counter outlet in a shopping mall in the Village Market at the exit of Village Grocer at the Tropicana Gardens Mall. Staffed by 3 people with learning difficulties - with full responsibility for the day to day operation, it offers both fulfilling employment, revenue for our social enterprise as well as great advocacy though visibility and community engagement.Take a look here

There is much to do to refine and improve the model and our new team is working hard at that now - especially on branding, packaging and presentation of our product. Our aim is to replicate to broaden our reach. I’m happy to report that CIMB Foundation have generously pledged financial support to enable 2 more counter outlets this year.

REFRESH AND REFURBISH

We also fully refurbished our Options for Supported Living house ready for re-launch this year.Take a look here We are grateful to Mr Lim for his generous support

GOODBYE ANDTHANKYOU

In other news, sadly we said goodbye to 2 stalwarts from the Bake with DignityTeam.Pang HinYue one of our founders retired in December. Hin Yue started baking with Mettilda John back in 2006 in our Options house until 2017 when we opened the bakery at Leisure Commerce Square. Marina Lim who has been baking alongside HinYue since 2011 and more recently became lead baker also retired in December.Without them BWD would literally not be here, nor our sensational signature salted caramel fudge brownies. We cannot thank HinYue and Marina enough for their amazing dedication over the years; ensuring always perfect product, often big bulk orders put together over days of non-stop baking corralling and inspiring volunteers to get the job done.We miss them very much - and are grateful for ongoing background support.

We also say goodbye to HelenTeh our Executive Director of 7 years. Helen oversaw the exhaustive IRB inspection which led to the renewal of our tax free status and the creation of Bake with Dignity as a separate social enterprise as well as holding us together over during the difficult covid period. But perhaps her most enduring legacy is Everyone Can Run.Around 1000 runners of all shapes and sizes gathered annually at Central Park annually from 2016 through 2019 (when covid forced us online) to run 2, 5 or 10ks and return for fun, food and prizes, to raise funds and awareness for PwLDs.Conceived of and fully organised by Helen,Everyone Can Run is now an established and we intend to keep it going.Thank you Helen.

HELLO

We are really excited to welcome Chan Chia Lynn as our new Executive Director. As anApplied BehaviouralTherapist,Lynn brings professional experience and a wide network having worked in the sector for several years. She has had to hit the ground running - due to the coincidence of staff and volunteers leaving and is already making her mark.Read about her triumphs, challenges and ambitions are for DNS here. Also I am happy to welcome Michael Gearing to join our board - Gears brings invaluable insight and guidance from his years in NGO administration as a senior exec at SG Global.More about his work here

VOLUNTEER AND SUPPORT

Finally - having been volunteering now at DNS for 15 years - I still return invigorated from each visit,be it to our Options house at the weekend, to cut cookies with the bakers at LCS or our pioneering team atTGM. I encourage all who can to join as a volunteer and experience the boost that it brings. And finally our work would not be possible without the generous financial support of individuals and some organisations. We are extremely grateful to those who have contributed. Please click here to find out how you can help.

ED Report

am delighted to present the annual review of Dignity and Services for the exceptional year 2022.As a graduate of Upper Iowa University where I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Marketing, I consider it an absolute honor to have been chosen to join the extraordinary journey of Dignity and Services.

Ever since my graduation, I have dedicated myself to working with children who haveAutism, as an Applied BehaviouralAnalysisTherapist for 7 years. During this time, had the privilege of engaging with numerous captivatingAutistic children who opened my eyes to their extraordinary abilities. Unfortunately, many people who are not familiar withAutism tend to misunderstand these children, perceiving them as difficult, rebellious, or even aggressive. However, the truth is that they possess unique superpowers that can transform those who interact with them into patient, understanding, and compassionate individuals. They have an unparalleled perspective on the world, and they possess hidden talents that are truly awe-inspiring. Witnessing society's low acceptance of these incredible children, I couldn't help but worry about their transition into adulthood. Learning at their own pace, the journey ahead appeared increasingly challenging.

By joining Dignity and Services, I am determined to ensure that our shared objective remains unwaveringto help create a society where persons with learning disabilities enjoy dignity and respect, equal rights that they deserve, and opportunities to lead an independent and meaningful life within the community.

Moving forward, I primary goal is to create more opportunity for this community to thrive and explore not only in terms of their skill sets, but also through personal experiences. Creating more job prospects in various industries and guaranteeing that their voices are heard and that they are treated with dignity and respect.

The Journey of OJTProgramme

This is Amelia our on-job-training (OJT) participant. OJT programme has been available in supporting Adults with Learning Disabilities in choosing their path as well as identifying their passion, helping them to be work-ready. The OJT is an individualised training and only for three months and the trainee will need to undergo interview before theygetacceptedfortheprogramme.

Amelia and Timmy work together to do the cookie cutting task. Amelia learned many things during her OJT Program. From making and cutting cookies, cutting walnuts and washing dishes, practicing their fine motor skills. Amelia once had trouble remembering her ID number. But, over time she can remember it 100% without any help from others. She has made her improvement from scale0to4inwork-readiness
