WIDE OPEN SPACES - EXPLORE WEIMAR’S PARKS
WIDE OPEN SPACES
City parks and open spaces improve our physical and psychological health, strengthen our communities, and make our cities and neighborhoods more attractive places to live and work. Weimar’s abundance of outdoor spaces is a boon for both visitors and residents alike, and a source of pride for Weimar Mayor Milton Koller.
“When the master plan we put together for the community came out, the priority for folks was recreation for the youth,” said Koller. “Give them some place to go, something to do. And it was number one on our list.”
HILL MEMORIAL PARK
Hill Memorial Park encompasses softball fields, wooded walking trails that are ADA accessible, sand volleyball courts, a playscape, and a nine-hole golf course that is ranked 17th of the best nine-hole courses in Texas. Soon, thanks to a generous land donation by Dr. Ken Yoder, it will connect with the soccer fields northwest of the golf course.
“Mike Barrow, our city manager, has put together a plan to connect the entire complex,” shared Koller. “This would connect the soccer fields with the rest of Hill Memorial Park. We also have our Economic Development Committee putting together a project that would upgrade all of the recreational areas in town, including Hill Memorial Park. We want to add lights and benches to the walking trails and add three additional little league or softball fields. Plans are underway to add a playscape for the smaller kids, a large pavilion, concession stands, restrooms and a new parking lot. It will be a big, big asset to the community.”
Hill Memorial Park is located at 1481 US-90 in Weimar.
MUNICIPAL PARK
With a brand-new state-of-the-art swimming pool, complete with splashpad, in place at Municipal Park, the facility has been more popular than ever with

both kids and adults alike. “We’ve upgraded the pool and added the splashpad,” added Koller. “We also made a little party area and closed off the street in front to make it safer for the kids. There are picnic areas down by the creek, across the street from the pool. There is currently a project going to refurbish the playground equipment and groundcover. The gravel that is currently there is going to be removed and we are replacing with a cleaner, safer artificial surface.”
Municipal Park is located at 106 West Market Street in Weimar.
FUTURE PLANS
Koller, proud of the progress Weimar is making with the city parks, is eager to look ahead and talk about Weimar’s future plans.
“The kids are our future,” said Koller. “Our goal is to get them outside and keep them active. We also want to bring more people to Weimar, to either visit or relocate. For example, we have teams that will enter little league softball tournaments here, if we had the facilities, but instead they are now playing in another community. If we could enhance our facilities, we could host tournaments in softball, soccer, volleyball, baseball … even outdoor basketball tournaments. Another benefit is that it would bring business into town and boost our economy while having a place for kids to do outdoor activities. Improving our parks is a win-win for everyone.”
