YOU SHOULD KNOW PHYSICAL HEALTH

RAKING FOR EXERCISE Leaves, leaves everywhere. Yes, it’s that time of year; but here’s some good news. Raking leaves burns calories. For a 150 pound person, 30 minutes of raking leaves burns about 150 calories. So, put back that blower and go grab your rake! Might as well get some exercise.

MENTAL HEALTH

TANTRUMS Here’s the thing. Small children don’t have the life experience to distinguish between huge life events and small situations. Both can be upsetting to a child and cause a tantrum simply because of the child’s inability to express or control his emotions. We, as adults, have to decide whether a tantrum comes from anger or distress in order to deal with it effectively. If it’s from anger, we should be firm and clear on expected behavior, but safely distance ourselves until the tantrum is over. If the tantrum is due to distress, we should provide reassurance and acceptance of their feelings. Cuddles help as do distractions like singing or giving something to play with. The key is to stay calm, be consistent and remember that when the tantrum is over, it’s over. No need to relive it or make a lesson out of it.

KIDS HEALTH

HEADACHES If your kid has been complaining about headaches this fall, don’t blame it on back-to-school blues. Research indicates more children report headaches in the fall than any other season. Shifting from leisurely summer activities to busy back to school schedules is a big deal, and comes with changes in academic stressors, extracurricular activities, too little sleep, infrequent eating and increased screen time. Elementary school boys ages 5-9 seem to struggle the most. As students adjust, most cases subside after a few months. If not, or headaches don’t respond to mild pain relievers, call your pediatrician.

EYE HEALTH

STOP THE STRAIN We’re surrounded by screens. Desktops, laptops, TV’s, tablets and handhelds. And we’re on them all the time at home, at the office and even in the classroom. These devices give off high-energy, short-wavelength blue and violet light that can cause eye strain and discomfort. So, it’s important to give your eyes a break. One way, recommended by the American Optometric Association, is to follow the 20-20-20 rule. For every 20 minutes on a device, look away for 20 seconds at something 20 feet away. Your eyes will thank you.

COLLEGE HEALTH 101

STUDY/SLEEP/ EAT/REPEAT We know that a mom’s #1 concern for their college bound kids is health. Your college student needs to maintain a healthy lifestyle which starts with proper sleep and followed by diet and exercise. College can be stressful, so make sure your son or daughter knows how to manage stress. First is getting enough sleep. Staying up all night to study is not a good idea and actually results in poorer test scores. They should study, then, sleep on it!

Diet is next; help them with their eating plan (maintain portion control, and include fruits and veggies.) Recommend they take a multi-vitamin daily too. Exercise daily! Yes, suggest that they walk or bike across campus instead of driving; take the stairs instead of the elevator; and encourage them to find friends for pick-up games or intramural sports teams.

If your young adult follows these suggestions, give them an A+!

In fact, it’s one of the top three admitting diagnoses we see at Children’s HealthSM. COLLETTE, MOM OF 3 Q. My 9 year old really wants a trampoline for his birthday. I have heard that it can be a good for his health. How?

A. Most likely what you’re describing is cradle

impact, aerobic workout that aids in maintaining cardiovascular fitness – in fact, 10 minutes of jumping is equivalent to a 30 minute run!

According to a study completed by NASA, this means jumping is 68% more efficient than running. Plus, it’s so fun kids don’t feel like they are “working out” but rather enjoying some playtime. Physical activity like this is highly important for kids, as it can help them feel happier, positive and more self-confident. The repetitive action of jumping also helps improve bone mineral content and aids in building the musculoskeletal system.

cap. Doctors call it infantile seborrheic dermatitis. It’s fairly common in newborns and nothing to really worry about. While it doesn’t look pretty, it’s not contagious, not usually bothersome to babies, and not any indication of poor hygiene. The exact cause is unknown, but some researchers believe it’s due to overproduction of skin oil in the oil glands and hair follicles.

Most cases clear up on their own in about six to 12 months , but if it bothers you, you can loosen and remove the scales by gently massaging the scalp with your fingers or washcloth and washing your baby’s hair once a day.

Q. As a parent how do I know which diagnostic testing is best to test for food and drug allergies?

A. Diagnostic testing for foods is still being developed and evaluation varies based on the reaction type (allergy vs intolerance vs immunologic). History remains the most reliable way to diagnose a food reaction. In most cases food testing (either blood or skin) is ancillary and serve to confirm a suspected reaction. In clinic settings, an oral food challenge (where a person is observed eating a suspected food allergen in a monitored environment) is frequently performed. As for drugs, the only FDA approved test involves Penicillin. For that drug we have material to test and data to interpret the results. For all other medications, the most important information is a thorough history by a trained medical professional. Depending on the reaction type we do have options for management like performing a graded challenge or a true drug desensitization if the medication is truly needed.

y 12-year-old son has been living with Type 1 Diabetes for almost five years. Diabetes is a challenging disease to manage and I have come to respect it as an adversary. We monitor him 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We prick his fingers up to 12 times day to check the level of glucose (sugar) in his blood. We accept that no matter how diligent we are, some days we do not get it right.

Yet when I put myself into a scientific frame of mind and place my mommy concerns aside, I marvel at this rare opportunity to see physiology at work. Diabetes offers a glimpse of how normal bodies seamlessly manage whatever we put into them without us even having to give it a thought.

Here are some tips about a healthy lifestyle that have been reinforced since diabetes joined our family.

EAT FRUIT NOT THE JUICE

Juice is a great rescue food when a person with diabetes needs to get their blood sugar to rise quickly back into the normal zone. But that is not the effect you and I are looking for. Thanks to the fiber, whole fruit is absorbed more slowly making us feel full longer. To help your blood sugar stay stable when eating fruit, add some protein to your snack. Apple slices and nut butters or fruit with cheese help maintain energy over the long haul. You want to avoid that quick burst of energy followed by an energy crash.

FIBER COUNTS

Not only is fiber important to the health of your digestive system, it helps stabilize your blood sugar. When we calculate the number of carbohydrates my son is eating we subtract the grams of fiber because these grams reduce the amount insulin he requires. The fiber is digested more slowly, helping to keep blood sugar level. When you are buying cereal look for brands that have at least 3g of fiber per serving. Consider sneaking extra fiber into foods. I have made chocolate chip oatmeal cookies with cooked lentils and my son ate them, happily unaware of the added fiber. The result?

No blood sugar spike after eating cookies.

EATING AT HOME IS HEALTHIER

Restaurant food is higher in fat and sodium and should be a rare treat. When you cook at home you can control

the ingredients. When our son eats restaurant food his body requires extra insulin for up to eight hours after eating. Not so when we eat at home.

THE PIZZA FACTOR The toughest food we have found to adjust for is pizza. Eating restaurant or delivery pizza strains his body for hours. When we make pizza at home using either a homemade, pita or naan bread crust and low fat cheese, we do not need to make any special adjustments to his insulin. After watching how hard it is for his body to cope with pizza we know the rest of our bodies are working overtime as well.

CANDY CAN BE DANDY People with diabetes can still eat candy or sugary treats but they need to compensate for them with insulin. Candy makes a great rescue food bringing blood sugar levels up quickly when they drop below normal (a dangerous thing for people taking insulin). When might non-diabetic people benefit from a sugar boost? Candy can help during an athletic event to compensate for the impact of exercise, say on a long run or bike race when there is no time to stop and eat a piece of fruit. And of course, candy and sweets have a place in celebrating special occasions.

MOVE YOUR BODY

When my son sits in front of his game console for any length of time I need to give him extra insulin as his blood sugar begins to rise from lack of activity. Exercise helps keep him closer to his normal range. This simply reinforces that our bodies are made to move.

Exercise helps our heart and lungs and our evens out blood sugar levels.

When you hear that someone is following a diabetic diet it should mean that they are eating healthy and exercising, behaviors that can benefit us all. SP

THE CUTTING ARTIST

A

question to parents: A) If you could have a smart, popular, good looking, naturally talented, freeloading son who shared your life for all eternity and never left his studio apartment upstairs in your house, or B) A son who moved far away but

was employed, which would you choose?

If you answered A, you’re a strong candidate for a pet who should volunteer serving refreshments at a punk rock concert for needed shock therapy.

If you answered B, you’re a red blooded American parent who already has your five-year-olds college dorm picked out and a moving company on standby.

From the moment our children are born, we start grilling them on the basics. What is your name? Why did you hit your sister? And, what do you want to be when you grow up?

This last question is the most important. After 20 years of communal

I’ll probably be kicked out of Rotary for bringing one more starving artist into the world.

I want to answer B to the above question, but sadly I must settle for

“A cutting artist,” he says with a toothy grin.

The kid next door was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. My son came into this world with scissors. In fact, when he popped out of the womb, he cut his own umbilical cord.

Let me explain. A cutting artist takes magazines, newspapers, dish towels, cardboard and airline tickets, cuts them out in odd shapes and then pastes, glues, tapes, tacks or licks them on paper, walls, cousins, wood or mom’s side of the bed.
