The Nostalgia...
DESK issue
Nostalgia , an oft-repeated noun in this issue is driven by shoppers of varying ages. From the boomers to millennials, we all have different emotions that compel us to fork over our hard-earned cash to add to our collections. So, it’s easy to see why vintage lunch buckets have always been hot items.
From LEAVE IT TO BEAVER to BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD, lunch pails are sought after by different age groups. But not only things. Nostalgia touches all the senses. Smells, sights, and special places just to name a few. As a septuagenarian, this is only my old fart opinion of why we come here every season. “ Why do you come?”
Nostalgia , to be clear, that is what Texas Antiques Week shows are all about. What else drives hundreds of thousands of visitors to pack up their families and drive across the country from the east or west coasts countless miles to our bucolic hamlets in Fayette County?
In this issue, we want to cast a spotlight on one particular little town: WARRENTON. Warrenton is host to more individual antique vendors than anywhere else and the most visited by shoppers and antique dealers. And in addition, it’s where many dealers made their bones and have moved on to the high-end paid admission shows in Round Top where a space to rent will set you back a couple thousand dollars.
But why do I focus on Warrenton?
Well, it’s for me and my family—the Show Daily family... it’s where we started out. Our first show was in October 1996, I believe, if my doddering memory doesn’t fail me.
We set up at BJ’s Renck Hall and Field. We were never invited back because BJ complained that our campfire cooking was blowing too much smoke into the hall with their high-end Early American furniture customers. We humbly apologized and we certainly learned early on to be more considerate of our Warrenton hosts. The following show, we camped out at Dillard’s Field on a hill. Which was great, except for one very rainy day when all of our stuff washed down to Hwy 237.
It’s probably hard to imagine, but back in those early days there was perhaps only about 10 percent of the dealers that are there now.
We have been firsthand witnesses to the gradual growth of the area. Soon every shed, barn and lean-to were being rented out to newcomers. Then came Bar W for about three or four shows. with the most vendors of any field in Warrenton. But even then, there were maybe a total of 20 vendors there.
Hopefully, this story will serve to further explain our cover for this
issue featuring the ex-Third Base Bar owned by Cathey Bishop. Third Base Bar was the place every vendor visited after a long day out in the fields. Along with my wife Suzy, Lou Christine, and most of the gang, we would walk from our camp to that bar for a late night cheeseburger and a few beers. We yakked about each other’s great finds out in the fields and or the great sales of the day. We knew all the patrons and we had a lot of fun. Except for an occasional kerfuffle or two, these visits always conjure fond memories.
Many of us long time dealers are so thankful for the YaYa Gurlz’s effort to keep the Third Base’s watering hole tradition alive. They have given the bar a facelift and at the same time opened a store of ladies’ apparel and even greatly improved the food offerings.
The whole Warrenton story is an example of why nostalgia is what drives us—what we buy, what we sell, and the memories that keep us coming back, year after year. Warrenton will always be the best town to shop.
Welcome back dealers...welcome back shoppers. Texas Antiques Week is upon us again. And the excitement is ever present, and you don’t just read about it in your posts, it emanates and pulsates and is quickly building. Roberto ...

Meet the Woods
Author Janice Teinert
The description of Warrenton, Texas, and its transformation during the semi-annual Antique Fair vividly portrays the town’s dual nature— serene for most of the year and bustling during the fair. The fair’s ability to draw in tourists from around the world is a testament to its significance in the antique and vintage market.
The wide variety of offerings at the Antique Fair, from beautiful flowers to vintage clothing, yard art, antiques, and more, underscores its reputation as a must-visit destination for those in search of unique and diverse items. This diversity of goods attracts both local vendors and those from distant places, creating a dynamic marketplace that caters to a global audience.
Highlighting long-standing vendors like Donald and Delores Wood, who have been participating in the fair since 2000, adds a personal touch to the story. Their journey from a simple roadside tent to a more prominent setup in Warrenton’s Tree Park Field reflects the growth and evolution of the fair over the years. Their commitment to sourcing items through estate sales and their dedication to offering bargains to customers contribute to the fair’s allure.

Bill Moore...
“Butcher Baker and Candlestick Maker”
In the early days, when Suzy and I were still set up in Bar W Field, I met this solitary man who was right behind us in a 20X20 tent. Bill had a treasure trove of small trinkets and plenty of ephemera, so it was natural that I became a steady customer. But mostly my visits turned into hours of yak fests between us. I did the bulk of the listening. Many of his tales were unbelievable and often very funny. Later on in the years, he sold all his assets in California and purchased his property in Round Top. As I learned, he was indeed an importer of containers of European antiques, by the hundreds. He supplied every major auctioneer in the business. We became fast friends along with his wonderful wife, Sophie. Add Suzy to the mix and we became inseparable and even traveled together to several countries abroad. Above all, Bill was one of my very best pals. I even convinced him to spin a few yarns for our Show Daily readers and he did, several of them. I later learned he was everything they said about him. A very storied career in many different endeavors. “YO BILLY....see ya up there real soon, love you and miss you already”

Warrenton Inn Furnished with Flair
The Warrenton Inn indeed appears to be a delightful and historically rich destination in downtown Warrenton, offering a blend of history, comfort, and modern amenities. The transformation of the inn, from its earlier days with hotel rooms over a stable and a blacksmith shop next door, to its present-day beautifully decorated rooms with ensuite bathrooms, reflects the changing times and the commitment to providing a comfortable stay for guests.
The mention of the Dolly Parton room adds a touch of uniqueness and character to the inn’s offerings, giving guests an interesting and themed option for their stay. Tammie and Matthew Boyd’s ownership and expansion of the Warrenton Inn in 2021, which includes eleven rooms, signify their dedication to enhancing the inn’s accommodations.
The “Bougie Bathroom,” an air-conditioned bathroom trailer with multiple restrooms, is a practical and thoughtful addition that contributes to the convenience of visitors, especially during busy events like antique fairs. The rooftop restaurant, Redbeards, managed by Dylan and Amy Fischer and Colin Kohl adds a culinary dimension to the inn’s offerings. The fact that it is the only sit-down rooftop restaurant in Warrenton makes it a unique dining experience. The variety of food options, including hamburgers, salads, brisket, and tacos, suggests a diverse and appealing menu.

Warrenton Grocery Store –A Staple of Warrenton
Author Janice Teinert
The description of the Warrenton Antique Fair and the town of Warrenton itself paints a vivid picture of the unique and bustling atmosphere that descends upon this quiet Texas town twice a year.
Warrenton’s usual identity as a slow-moving country town, complete with friendly local stops like the Warrenton Grocery Store, is contrasted with the transformation that occurs during the Antique Fair. This semi-annual event turns Warrenton into a metropolis, attracting vendors and shoppers from around the world.

Warrenton’s location and the timing of the Antique Fair, held in March/April and September/ October are items all shoppers should know. The competitive spirit among vendors and shoppers to be “first” adds an element of excitement to the fair’s opening days.
The transition from a primarily cash-based payment system to the acceptance of credit cards and online payments by many vendors reflects the evolving nature of commerce at the fair.
The must mention of the Warrenton Grocery Store, an institution since the 1800s, is a fascinating insight

Vendor Profile:
William W. Reed (contributing writer)
Iagreed to be an interim writing collaborator for Show Daily Magazine, due to the retirement of Lou Christine. The Editors of Show Daily Magazine, desire more profiles of the many diverse and unique dealers of antiquities from all across the country. I have lived with one for 6 decades, and didn’t have to travel far to interview this particular dealer of antique glass and more. Penny has an eye for the eclectic. She has a true passion for sharing the history of the odd, unique, and hard to find (if not out & out “Rare”) items. Glass: Elegant, Victo-
rian, Depression, Carnival, Early American Pattern Glass and European items have always been a staple of her wares and expertise.
Penny is a true “show” dealer that literally travels coast to coast and border to border. She will find items on the East Coast that didn’t make the Conestoga Wagon trip to the West Coast. There will be items that are plentiful in one area of the country and she shares to the areas that are wanting. If there is an item that the “True Collector” needs to complete a collection, talk to Penny. She won’t make empty promises, but she does love a challenge. After all, she accepted the challenge of making me into the man she wanted. With her help, and remolding, I’m damn near perfect…William W. Reed (the old golf guy).

Cheer’s Bar Sells
Sometimes you wanna go where everyone knows your name. And sometimes you wanna own the entire bar, which is why someone paid $675,000 for the bar from the hit sitcom “Cheers” at Heritage Auctions, June 3.The bar was featured in all 275 episodes of “Cheers” and was the singular artifact that all main cast members and guest stars alike gathered around during 11 seasons of one of the greatest television comedies of all time. The bar is from TV memorabilia enthusiast James Comisar’s incredible collection that all sold through Heritage. In the fall
of 1982, NBC premiered “Cheers,” a smartly written show about a bar owned by a retired Boston Red Sox relief pitcher named Sam Malone and featuring a cast of characters known today on a first-name basis: Norm, Cliff, Carla, Diane, Woody, Frasier and Rebecca, among others.By 1993, at the end of its run, “Cheers” was earning a now unheard-of 26 million viewers per week. For the most part, people sat around the bar and talked. Today, some lucky bidder can do the same.

Tips & Tidbits
By Show Daily Staff
The Warrenton-Round Top Antiques Show is a renowned event that takes place every spring and fall, attracting thousands of shoppers and dealers from around the United States and other countries. Here are some key details about the event:
1. **Location:** The event is located almost midway between Austin and Houston, specifically in Round Top and Warrenton Texas. It spans across several towns, including Carmine, Burton, and Fayetteville, all within a 20- mile radius of Round Top.
2. **Event Size:** The Warrenton-Round Top Antiques Show is one of the largest antiques festivals in the country, both in terms of shopping space and the area it covers. It features nearly 100 venues set up along an 11- mile stretch of State Highway 237.
3. **Timing:** The event takes place in both spring and fall. The fall event typically begins in mid-October, with some venues opening as early as October 12 and others as late as October 24. The event concludes on October 29.
4. **Variety of Merchandise:** Shoppers can find a wide range of items, from high-end European furniture and fine art to flea-market bargains. There’s an eclectic mix of styles available, including Americana, Texana, midcentury modern, French country, classic European, and contemporary.
5. **Venue Differences:** Each of the 100+ venues are independently owned and operated. They have varying amenities, such as air conditioning, bathrooms, and dining options. Admission prices also vary, with most venues offering free entry.
6. **Plan Ahead:** Given the vast size of the event and the numerous venues, it’s essential to plan your visit in advance. Research the venues you want to explore and their opening and closing dates. Consid-
er purchasing early-admission tickets if available.
7. **Parking and Transportation:** Some venues offer free parking, while others may charge for parking. Be prepared to walk and possibly move your car between venues, as they are spread out. Dress comfortably, wear sturdy shoes, and consider a wide-brimmed hat for sun protection.
8. **Shopping Tips:** Make a shopping list and manage your expectations, as there is an overwhelming amount of merchandise available. Large items can usually be shipped, so plan accordingly. Having a bigger vehicle can be helpful for transporting purchases.

An Absolute Fabulous 15 Years
Somewhere between Aprooos and Apple Pie and some other 20 mispronunciations, there is Apropos! (a·pruh·pows) which simply means ... appropriately, in regard to, just right for the moment.
Apropos was Tom Lombardo’s idea! He set out to create a comfortable, multi-vendor tent offering fresh and different merchandise, with great prices, diverse ideas, and mostly, excellent customer service. After years of revolving vendors, surprising themes, countless dinner parties, headaches/heartaches, and of course the weather, Apropos has evolved into a two-man operation-Tom Lombardo and James Young. James, being one of the original vendors, has survived all of Tom’s creative craziness and changes.
Now just “The Boys” as they are affectionately known, work together and turn lemons into lemonade. ‘Most talked about Tent.’ (Crazily started as an unkind remark one day) refers to their fun themes, exceptional merchandise, superb prices, and genuine great service, plus a little gossip.
One must keep in mind that Tom and James are as different as night and day. Adding their own attributes to the tent. Tom is an over imaginative, creative, flippant, no filters, off the wall, perfectionist, who treats Apropos like his child. In complete contrast is James, who is serious, a superb bookkeeper, articulate, rational and has a wicked dry humor. James helps keep Tom and Apropos stay grounded by constantly reminding him “This is a business.” But somehow James can always be persuaded into some different kinds of social hijinks and photo opps...This is why these two always seem to click. With their Gilbert and Sullivan type relationship, it’s difficult to imagine that these two only meet twice a year at the Warrenton-Round Top Antique Show. They then return to their separate lives. (No, they are not a couple)
Look MA we have been published 15 years and we havent killed each other
After 15 fabulous years, Apropos stands at the top of their game and are still going strong. These guys still offer wonderful themes, exceptional merchandise from 84 different categories. (We won’t list them all) At Apropos, you the customer will continue to find great prices, along with surprise impromptu parties plus as always great customer service.
Over the last 15 years ‘The Boys” report they have made some wonderful friends, developed
We offer great service!!
a strong clientele, and as they stated, “even a few angels”. Make sure you don’t miss this tent. Come help Tom and James celebrate their Absolutely Fabulous 15-years at Apropos, Friday, October 13 at 9am sharp. (Located in Northgate)
Tom and James thank and love you all for all the dedicated years of support.
P.S. Bring the Champayne!!!

Thrift Store Find
Courtesy Roseberys
It pays to know a little something about Chinese ceramics. A pair of jars bought for $25 by a curious customer in a London thrift shop turned out to be 18th century treasures from the Qing Dynasty that sold for about $57,500 at Roseberys Fine Art Auctioneers in London. The anonymous thrift-shop buyer didn’t know what he had in the two imperial Chinese doucai “lotus and chrysanthemum” jars, only that he thought the 4-1/2-inch-tall were unique enough to have an expert look at them“It highlights the importance of specialist knowledge when it comes to selling Chinese porcelain,” said Bill Forrest, associate director and head of Chinese, Japanese and South East Asian Art at RoseberysDoucai is a porcelain painting technique used in the earlier Ming dynasty where designs are outlined in blue before being glazed. The jars feature rounds of blooming red and yellow chry-
santhemums heads interspersed with tendrils of lotus flowers. They bear the Qianlong seal marks on the base in underglaze blue.
Chrysanthemums and orchids were two of the four “gentlemen flow- ers” commonly painted on porcelain, with chrysanthemums a popular motif given their association with long life and wealth. The jars would have been used to store tea leaves.

Vendor Profile:
Not all vendors of quality goods are world-wide travelers. Not all makers of quality goods are Fortune 500 companies. The backbone of the USA small businesses and cottage industries are said to be Mom & Pop Stores. Some think that the term Mom & Pop is derogatory, but I am not of that opinion. AS A MATTER OF FACT, I happen to think that these same cottage industries and small operations are what makes this country great. It’s amazing to me that people will use their spare time, their so-called leisure hours to learn, study and create a business that gives them pleasure and create a better life or retirement for themselves rather than lining up at the “public trough” of hand outs and freebies.
Paula had a great career at Progressive Insurance Company for over 3 and a half decades before retirement. Her husband Harry toiled years at Texas State University of San Marcos, TX. before his retirement. They’ve been married for 42 years, and have two grown children, who are not involved in the family business.
The name of HP Antiques is simplistic, singularly honest and direct, and bears the initials of the names of the owners, workers, and craftsmen, that comprise this Mom & Pop Company. The backbone of cottage industries of this great nation of ours is HP. The initials HP could be mistaken for a Fortune 500 Corporation: Hewlett Packard. That HP makes quality goods as well / albeit computers and assorted electronics. Perhaps Harry & Paula use one of the HP products to assist them in their cottage industry of refurbishing and preserving the history of hand made items that are not only functional but have a beauty and quality that mass produced items just do not have (at least to this old discerning eye). HP Antiques refurbishes, reclaims, and preserves old oak furniture that not only serves function, but preserves a golden beauty that one will never find at an IKEA Store. I am not denigrating affordable modern puzzles of pressed wood and plastic (as some say that IKEA produces). HP offers history at a price range of very low and affordable, up to: you’d better bring the plastic. Considering the quality, it’s all very affordable.
I am thanking the Harry’s & Paula’s ( HP ) that preserve the best and share it with us via the venue at Cole’s Antiques during the Round Top Antique Week Extravaganza. Spring and Fall. Harry and Paula can be found at booth # 89 at the Cole’s Antique Building located at: 3637 SH 237 Round Top, TX. 78954

Screen Door
Theresa Woodson is a familiar face at Bar W in Warrenton, where she’s a regular vendor during the fall and spring shows. Her business, SCREEN DOOR, is well-known for its collection of vintage kitchen furniture and kitchen-related items. Theresa has a talent for decorating, which is evident in the unique and attractive displays she creates at her booth.
To make her setup process easier, Theresa gets assistance from Troy Heinson, who helps with the loading, unloading, and arranging of the heavier items in her booth. However, it seems that Troy has a penchant for playing (or should I say, displaying) the vintage cars and trucks that are also
on him is probably necessary to ensure the items remain in place!
If you’re ever in Warrenton and exploring the various vendors, make sure to visit Bar W and look for the SCREEN DOOR. You can easily spot it by keeping an eye out for Troy’s red, white, and blue golf cart, which is usually parked nearby. Theresa’s booth sounds like a must-visit for anyone interested in vintage kitchen items and unique displays.

Zapp Hall Memories
Zapp Hall holds a special place in Fayette County as a beloved dance hall with a rich history dating back many years. It has witnessed countless performances by various bands, each with its own set of stories and memories.
One local musician with a deep connection to Zapp Hall is Lee Teinert, who has fond memories of playing there. In 1966, when Lee was a high school senior, he performed at Zapp Hall the night before embarking on his Senior Trip to Six Flags. His band, The GTO, comprised of Gary Schultz, Don Bremmer, David Fritsch, and himself, had just graduated from La Grange High School the night before. It must have been an unforgettable experience for them to play at the iconic dance hall before heading off on their trip.
Years later, Lee found himself back at Zapp Hall, this time playing with the top local band, the Hi-Notes. The band included Curtis Oltmann on guitar, Weldon Von Mindon on guitar, Charles Von Minden on keyboard and saxophone, Dan Marek on drums, and Lee Teinert on bass. The dance hall continued to draw
good-sized crowds, with around three to four hundred people attending each dance.
Today, Zapp Hall has transformed into a venue for antique vendors to showcase and sell their treasures. The days of just being a dance hall have been replaced by the excitement of antique shopping, where visitors hope to find that special item they’ve been searching for. When you step into Zapp Hall during one of these shows, take a moment to look around and reflect on all the memories that have been created within this historic building over the years. It’s a place that has held countless stories, both musical and nostalgic, for the community.

The Gin
It’s lovely to hear that Curtis Oltmann has fond memories of visiting Max Zapp’s cotton gin in Warrenton. It must have been a special experience for him to accompany his father as they brought their cotton to the gin for ginning. Cotton gins have played a significant role in the history of agricultural communities, and they hold nostalgic value for many people.
The pictures of the gin as it stands today in Warrenton likely serve as a reminder of the rich history and heritage of the area. These structures often stand as historical landmarks, preserving the memories of the past and the hard work of generations involved in cotton farming. It’s heartwarming to know that these memories continue to be cherished.

Susan Franks
We, at Show Daily Magazine, are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Susan Franks. Her dedication and passion for the Original Round Top Antiques Fair at the Big Red Barn have left a legacy in the world of antiques. It’s clear that she poured her heart and soul into the show and the relationships with her dealers, and her love for it all was palpable to everyone who experienced it. Susan’s presence will be greatly missed, but her influence on the antique community will endure.
Glory Days - Y Station
YStation, founded in 2018, has transformed from a small-scale project into a vibrant community-style venue under the leadership of Len Peters and his dedicated team. Located at the intersection of Spur 458 and Highway 237 in Texas, it has become a strategic stop for shoppers heading to nearby towns like Carmine, Round Top, and Warrenton. The venue has expanded significantly since its inception, now encompassing the entire Northwest corner of this intersection.
One outstanding aspect of YStation is its commitment to giving back to the community. From its early days, the venue provided a space for vendors to donate items, with all proceeds benefiting local organizations. In the upcoming Fall 2023 show, the Round Top-Carmine Education Foundation will be the exclusive beneficiary.
YStation hosts a diverse range of vendors, each offering unique vintage, antique, and eclectic items. The buildings themselves have distinct personalities, adding to the venue’s overall charm. Shoppers can expect to find a wide array of specialties, from country-themed items to Christmas decorations, jewelry, art, and much more.
As part of the Fall show, YStation will host a Corndog Corner event on October 24th, offering a bonfire, late-night shopping, good company, and $1 corndogs.
With 14 buildings now part of the venue, YStation has become a destination shoppers take pride in exploring. Its signature yellow circle logo and the vintage truck front end mounted on the converted gas station, a local landmark predating World War II, serve as unmistakable markers of the venu’s presence.
For those planning to visit, YStation will be open daily from 9 am to 6 pm from October 14th to October 28th, with early shoppers welcome and ample free parking available in both the front and back of the venue. An onsite food truck adds to the convenience and experience of visiting YStation.
In conclusion, YStation’s remarkable journey from humble beginnings to a thriving community-style venue is a testament to the hard work, vision, and commitment of Len Peters and his team. The venue’s growth, dedication to community involvement, and diverse offerings make it a notable destination for shoppers seeking unique treasures and a memorable experience.
