WELCOME TO SEALY
Welcome to Austin County! We are thrilled that you chose to make our community your new home, and we look forward to getting to know you better in the coming months and years. As your County Judge, it is my job to represent the interests of all of our area residents. We are proud of our beautiful natural resources, our thriving local economy, and our strong sense of community; and we hope that you will quickly come to appreciate all that our county has to offer. Whether you are interested in exploring our many parks and recreational facilities, shopping and dining in our charming downtown areas, or getting involved in one of our many civic organizations, there is something for everyone here in Austin County. As you settle into your new neighborhood, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me or any of our other county officials with any questions or concerns. We are here to help make your transition as smooth and seamless as possible, and we are always happy to hear from new residents. We are excited to have you as a part of our community, and we look forward to seeing all of the great things you will accomplish here.
On behalf of the City of Sealy and the Sealy City Council, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Sealy. Our rich history began with the development of the railroad and our San Felipe neighbors, thanks to Stephen F. Austin. The early business community leaders were very wise platting our wide streets bordered by huge oak trees as well as providing for the residents’ daily needs that continued to migrate from European Countries by way of Galveston’s port. The steadfast work culture has endured through the generations as well as the love of social activities from music, bingo and church. Another example of our heritage is the historic Liedertafel, a famous round dance hall, located in our own city where weddings and various gatherings continue. School and sport activities are ongoing year-round. Also, there are many good choices for local shopping as well as dining. Our location on Interstate 10 (52 miles west of downtown Houston) and State Highway 36 is convenient for commuters who prefer a less hectic lifestyle as well as business and commercial industries. As a new or returning resident, I urge you to get involved and become part of the fabric of Sealy’s activities and ongoing heritage. Once again, welcome; we are pleased you have chosen to live in Sealy.
The Greater Sealy Area Chamber of Commerce extends a warm welcome to you and your family. We are thrilled that you have chosen to make our community your new business home. As the Chairperson of the Board, I want to assure you that we are committed to making the Greater Sealy Area a wonderful place to live, work and play. We are proud of our vibrant community, which is filled with friendly people, excellent schools, outstanding healthcare facilities, and recreational opportunities. At the Chamber of Commerce, we work hard to promote the growth and development of local businesses, as well as to support the needs of our residents. We believe that a thriving business community is essential to creating a high quality of life for everyone, and we are committed to helping our local businesses succeed. As a new resident, we invite you to get involved in our community and take advantage of all that the Greater Sealy Area has to offer. Whether you are interested in joining one of our local service organizations, attending community events, or volunteering with one of our many non-profit organizations, there are plenty of opportunities for you to get connected and make a difference. Once again, welcome to the Greater Sealy Area! We are excited to have you as a part of our community, and we look forward to getting to know you better in the months and years ahead.

SEALY’S RICH HISTORY
The
IBirth of Sealy
n the early 1820s, a new settlement known as San Felipe emerged on the western bank of the Brazos River, rising to prominence as the capital of Stephen F. Austin’s colony. Serving as both the seat of government and the location of Austin's land office, San Felipe de Austin marked the first and largest Anglo-American settlement in Mexican Texas, facilitating the introduction of 300 families into the region.
In the mid-1870s, the burgeoning town faced a pivotal decision when the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railway proposed routing its new Galveston-Brenham spur through San Felipe. Despite declining the offer, the railroad acquired a right-of-way through the western section of the original 22,000-acre municipal tract.
The subsequent purchase of an 11,635-acre tract from the San Felipe de Austin Town Corporation led to the establishment of a new townsite south of Bullinger’s Creek. In 1879, the bustling town of Sealy was officially founded, named in honor of George Sealy, a prominent director of the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railway.
The railroad quickly became the primary employer and transformed the area, constructing yards, machine shops, and a roundhouse. Additionally, an influx of German and Czech settlers diversified the local economy, integrating farming and ranching alongside railway operations.
Despite facing adversities like a disastrous flood in 1899 and the relocation of the railway division headquarters in 1900, Sealy per-
severed. The establishment of the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas Railroad in 1892 and the Cane Belt Railroad in 1903 further solidified Sealy’s position as a vital transportation hub.
Manufacturing enterprises such as the Haynes Mattress Factory
and the Engelking Brothers Broom Factory bolstered the town’s commercial reputation.
On Aug. 16, 1949, Sealy residents voted to incorporate the town as Austin County’s newest city.
A Familiar Name
Sealy Mattress traces its roots back to 1881 when Daniel Haynes, a cotton gin builder in Sealy, Texas, began crafting cotton-filled mattresses for his friends and local community members. His mattresses quickly gained popularity, leading to increased demand and wider recognition. In 1889, Haynes pat -
ented a machine that compressed cotton, revolutionizing mattress manufacturing.
As his reputation spread beyond Sealy, Haynes mattresses became known as “Sealy mattresses.” In 1906, Haynes sold his factory, patents, and manufacturing
equipment to a group from Texas who chose to retain the name and call their new company the Sealy Mattress Company. Haynes established a new mattress factory in 1909, which continued operations after his death in 1913, solidifying the matress manufacturer's status as one of Sealy’s primary industries until 1976.

In 1881, Daniel Haynes (1828-1913) arrived in Sealy, a burgeoning railroad town. Four years later in 1885, he revolutionized mattress manufacturing with his innovative process and machine, trademarking the Haynes name. By 1906, his patents and equipment were sold to a company adopting the name Sealy, leading Haynes to establish a new factory in 1909. This factory remained a cornerstone of Sealy’s economy until 1976, testament to Haynes’ pioneering legacy.

On July 5, 1883, Sealy recorded its first burial at the Sealy Cemetery, that of infant Annie Fowlkes. Families initially acquired cemetery plots directly from the railroad until the land was donated to trustees C.H. Ruff, R.P. Josey, and John Hackbarth in 1887. The Sealy Cemetery Association, established sometime prior to 1898 and officially chartered in
1924, received vital support from the Ladies of the Cemetery Society. Formed in 1904, these ladies helped upgrade and maintain the cemetery. Notable members like Mrs. J.W. (Vera) Ripple and Mrs. Paul (Mahala) Hackbarth spearheaded community events like the Christmas Bazaar Fundraiser, evolving into a cherished annual social affair. Among the 2,400 grave sites lie the resting places of Sealy’s earliest settlers, adorned with diverse gravestones and statuary, including two mausoleums.

A singing society known as Liedertafel, formed by Sealy’s early settlers around 1899, convened primarily at Ferdinand Lux’s residence. Lux and Fritz Kinkler, Jr., generously donated land for a permanent building in 1912-1914, leading to the construction of a distinctive round frame dance hall. Erected with materials from the F.W. Hackbarth Lumber Company, this octagonal structure became a focal point for community concerts, festivals, and dances, serving as a beloved gathering spot for special events for decades.

In 1885, German immigrants Adolph H. Preibisch and Emilie purchased lots in Sealy and commissioned the construction of a commercial building, completed in 1886-1887 by brick mason John Colleton. Initially housing Preibisch’s own store, it sold household goods and furniture, and also served as a funeral casket outlet. Over the years, the building accommodated various businesses and remains a significant part of Sealy’s architectural history. The building now houses Saddleback Saloon.
