First Things First
When I think of August, I think of “firsts.” Some readers may think of January when firsts are mentioned, but when August rolls around, there are many very special firsts. Granted, most have to do with our kiddos, but they are so memorable!
There’s the first day of school. Whether Pre-K or high school or college, they bring a tear to mom’s eye. August also brings the first day of team practices. Whether drill team, band, or sporting events, I was always thankful to be a girl when my brothers were enduring two-a-day football practices in August.
However, my favorite first is the first day of August--when the annual Postcards Photo Cover Contest begins! If you’ve ever taken a picture you think is really great, NOW is the time to send it in.
Our categories this year are:
The Grand Prize winner and First Prize winner in each category will have their photo published on the cover of one of our editions in 2024 along with receiving other great prizes. You can submit your entries and learn more on our website PostcardsLive.com/contests.
We look forward to seeing your entries!
Until next time, ~ Karen

Royal Crown Barrel Race-Oklahoma City, horse – Ain’t Seen Famous Yet
She may appear small in stature, but Dusky Lynn Hall is quite the contrary in personality and drive. The third-generation, 9-year-old barrel racer from Huntsville, Texas is a force to be reckoned with in and out of the arena. This 4’1”, 56-pound package of dynamite makes no bones about it – horses and rodeo are her life. At the age of 7, Dusky left a private school in Huntsville to start home school and spend her time on what she loved most – horses and barrel racing. She burst into the barrel racing world at full speed and has no intention of slowing down.
With more than 100 buckles on display and trophy saddles that line the walls of her home, it is no surprise she is also the youngest child to have ever qualified for the prestigious The American Rodeo in Arlington, Texas. She qualified at a mere 7 years old.
“We were watching The American Rodeo on RFD TV, and Dusky (Lynn) told us she wanted to run for the million,” says Dusky Dawn Hall, mom of Dusky Lynn. “We knew she was serious, and it’s in her blood. So, we started putting building blocks in place with different horses. We started small, then worked our way up. It’s taken 2-3 years to put together the team she has now.”
The coveted American Rodeo event is considered the crown jewel of rodeos and gives contenders a chance to earn $1 million. Any rodeo athlete that lands outside the top five PRCA or WPRA ranking at the end of the season has the opportunity to compete at The American Rodeo by entering and competing in one or more of The American Contender Finals qualifying events, which
Dusky accomplished in Oklahoma in February 2023. The American Rodeo takes place each year in March.
As she zoomed around her barn on her Segway, the Postcards team managed to corral Dusky Lynn for an interview. Her enthusiasm for her horses and barrel racing became evident, as she pulled out her phone
under class; the mega barrel race in Jackson, Mississippi; and last year’s run for the $1 million American Rodeo at Globe Life Field in Arlington, along with too many other winning runs to count. Along with other youth, she competes against adult professional riders across the country and has been successful on multiple horses, with different bloodlines, from different trainers. Since 2022, Dusky Lynn has nearly $200,000 in winnings, both in youth and open (adult) races.
Let’s start with the most obvious question, Dusky Lynn. Why do you like to barrel race so much?
I love to barrel race because I love my horses, and it’s the only sport I want to do forever. If you saddled 12 horses right now, I’d ride every single one. I think my horses love me, and I love to go fast.
Hall describes her daughter as fearless and one who is always trying to ride wide open.
“I’m always the parent telling her to slow down. By the time she was 4 years old, she was riding her pony in the pattern saying, ‘Mom, I need a faster horse.’
and eagerly showed her winning and recordbreaking runs from barrel races around the country, including the Breeder’s Challenge Championship Finale in the Open, Youth, and Derby divisions. In 2023, she took places 1-3 in the youth division and placed in the open adult division as well. She competed in the Texas Youth Rodeo Association finals and won five saddles; Ogden World Champion Barrel Race in Oklahoma, where she took her second consecutive win in the 8 and
Hall explains that as an experienced competitor herself, she has only let Dusky Lynn step up to a new horse when she was riding the previous one to its fullest ability. “I don’t have her feet tied down, and she’s never ridden in a magic seat to help her stay mounted. I always thought that if she can’t ride it, we need to slow down.”
How many horses do you have? What are their names?
I have seven. There is Ol Doc,

“Choco,” and Add A Dash “Zeta.” They did what they needed to do to help get my name on the board and now they are retired. I also have Troublenvrlooksogood, “Dexter” (who qualified for The American in February 2023); Aint Seen Famous Yet, “Wally”; Jets Letters ta Abby, “Jax”; VF Eyse Famous, “Eysa”; and The Red Maserati, “Mazi”. Which one is your favorite and why?
My favorite horse is “Choco”, because he’s won me so much money, and “Dexter” because he’s amazing and easy to ride.
What is your daily schedule like?
During the summer, I start helping Bailey, our barn manager, with the horses at about 10:00 a.m. I help put them in the walker or ride them. Horses are athletes, and they have to exercise every single day. So, we make sure they get at least 30 minutes of intense training every day.
I also help with cold water spa treatments or equiscopes for horses. I stay in the barn until about 6:00-8:00 p.m., then go back to the house. During the school year, I am homeschooled from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. and then head to the barn at about 2:00 p.m. for the rest of the day into the evening. Before we got the walker, I would ride 5 or 6 horses a day. I am basically at the barn every day for 8-10 hours.
Hall explains how her daughter is always working at getting better. “She rides every day in our arena and also with seasoned riders to learn more,” said Hall. “She doesn’t just jump on her horses and compete. She is continuously working on her skills. You could not put someone who is not prepared on the caliber horses she has and win.”
The family has a covered arena where Dusky’s parents create a realistic practice environment. A sound system cranks up the music while practicing, so Dusky and the horses can get accustomed to the noises and distractions of a race while working together.
“The pressure and intensity at the barrel races can be crazy,” explains Hall. “It can be so loud in the alleyway that you can’t even hear each other talk. At The American, there’s smoke and fireworks; it’s nerve-

racking. There can be a lot of obstacles horses are not used to. It’s important that your horse stays cool, calm, and collected--and Dexter is one that can do that.”
They have also created an alleyway for Dusky Lynn to learn and practice different approaches to the first barrel. Hall says this helps Dusky feel comfortable and confident when she is at the actual competition.

What has been your favorite race/ competition and why?
My favorite race is the Christmas in Dixie Race in Jackson, Mississippi, because that’s where I set an arena record, and also The American Contender Finals in Tulsa, Oklahoma. That’s where I made the finals to earn a chance to run for $1 million at The American.
What was going through your mind when you set that record in Tulsa at the Contender Finals and knew you had a shot at The American and $1 million?
I was thanking my Mom, Dad, the Lord, and “Dexter” for doing so good. I’m thankful to my parents and the Lord because they’re the reason I’m able to be in this spot, and Dexter for giving me the chance to do what I can do. My horses and I are a good team.
Describe your experience at The American Rodeo last year. How close were you to winning that $1 million?
The stadium was very big and loud. I thought it would be smaller, but it was really big, and the barrels had a weird setup; they were
more spread out, which made it harder. It really was an experience like no other.
I ran a 15.864, which put me at number nine, and only the top 5 advance to run for the million on Sunday. The cutoff time to advance was 15.634 – 2 tenths of a second. Next time, I’m not going to hope – I’m going to win it.
Do you ever get nervous?
The more competition there is, the more I like it. I don’t get nervous. I am confident in my horses. It’s just another barrel race. I think
my mom gets more nervous than I do.
Are you ever intimidated by all the famous adult barrel racers you are competing against?
Never, no ma’am. I feel like I am one of them, I don’t get starstruck.
What is the best part about competing?
The best part is winning. I add my winnings up on a calculator and show my dad to see if I made more than he did on his paycheck. What is your best memory so far from barrel racing?
My best memory so far is when I ran a 13.739 in Jackson, Mississippi at the Christmas in Dixie Race in 2021. That run set the arena record and was the fastest run out of 850 runners that day. I felt really proud of Choco! The announcer said, “This might as well be the Dusky Lynn Hall Show”, because I had won Friday night against 650 runners and then set the arena record on Saturday.
So, what goes through your head right before a run?
That I am going to win it all, and my horses

are going to work well.
Do have any traditions or rituals you follow before each race?
I always put a Beamer blanket on my horse, and while I’m waiting in the alleyway, I say a prayer with Mom before I run.
Who is your hero?
I would say futurity trainer Ashley Shafer, because she’s worked with me a lot, and I’ve learned a lot from her. I would also add
Stefani Fryer, who runs pro. She rides with me and helps me tune up my horses.
You have already accomplished so much at such a young age. What are your future dreams?
Right now, my ultimate goal is to go back to The American Rodeo in March 2024 and win the $1 million. When I turn 18, I want to go pro and win the PRCA gold buckle for barrel racing at the National Finals Rodeo in Las
Vegas, Nevada. I want to win it the first time I compete at the NFR. I also want to make the cover of Barrel Horse News magazine. What advice would you give to other girls, or adults for that matter, who want to be as successful as you’ve been in barrel racing?
Well, don’t get nervous, and just go have fun! No matter what, be happy with your results and work towards a goal to always improve things in the run.
When you’re not in the barn or riding horses, what do you like to do for fun?
I like to ride my Segway. I play with my toy barn horses, go outside to play with my dogs, and swim. My family also goes to the lake when we can, which is fun.
Dusky Lynn has an evident determination and confidence which is quite evident when it comes to competition and being a top barrel racer. In constant full-throttle mode and with what her mom calls a God-given talent, Dusky Lynn is only beginning to make her mark on the barrel racing world.

Dear Gabby
Welcome back to the Dear Gabby advice column. This hot weather has been brutal! It was so hot in July that I got condensation on my backside from the water in the toilet bowl! I don’t expect August will be any cooler. Either it’s humid, or my underwear has suddenly turned very friendly. But, enough about my derriere, let’s discuss yours. It’s swimsuit weather, and I’m sure many of you are exercising more because of it. Please be careful with outdoor fitness routines. If you insist, switch your customary time to early mornings. I never thought I’d be the kind of person who’d wake up early to exercise…and I was right! Send your questions to me by clicking on Dear Gabby at www.PostcardsLive. com/share.
DEAR GABBY
I am so tired of trying to think of things to cook when it is so hot inside and outside my house! Do you have any suggestions for cool things to prepare for meals?
HOT, BUT NOT IN A GOOD WAY
DEAR HBNIAGW
Besides ice cream? Wraps, sandwiches, and pasta salads can be served cool or at room temperature. Fruit salads are delightful! There are lots of delicious salads with protein that are quick, easy, and cool. Tuna salad is a classic, chicken salad is wonderful, and shrimp salad
is even better. Add a cool dessert, and you’re gold. If you’d like my favorite salad recipes, give me a shout via the PostcardsLive address above, and we’ll print them in the next issue.

The Garden Post
By Kim Bius
Summer Gardening in Texas
It is deep summer in Texas, and the heat is sizzling. The following tips should be helpful. New landscapes (installed in spring) will require deep root watering 4x a week. If you have planted new plants into an established landscape, the new plants will need additional water and will need to be hand watered to not overwater established plants. The first few minutes of irrigation are lost to evaporation, making it imperative your stations are running a minimum of 15 minutes.
Outdoor pot plants may require watering every other day; some plants--such as petunias, geraniums, Gerber daisies and calibrachoa--will do beautifully if moved into an area with morning sun (shady after 12:30). In mid- September, the plants can be moved back into full sun, if you desire.
Annuals, perennials, and hanging baskets will require pruning back to pot rim and leave 6” on top for the plant to reflush if it has become heat weary. Frequent summer watering leaches out the nutrients, and it is important you keep your micronutrients replenished and not allow salt build up from granular fertilizer. Fox Farm has several rock star fertilizers that we use weekly at the garden center to keep plants looking lush.
Big Bloom, Tiger Bloom, and Comeback are our favorites. Bat Guano, worm castings, 10% iron, and a host of other nutrients will have your plants looking amazing in a few days.
Chinch bug damage is appearing in area lawns and must be treated quickly or you will have to replace the lawn. Treat with a granular systemic insecticide every 30 days through September. What do chinch bugs look like? You will notice brown, dried out grass along the perimeter….all the other grass in the area is lush green. You begin thinking, we need more water here…but it is microscopic chinch bugs “sucking” the chlorophyll out of the sod.
Most vegetable gardens will have “played out” by mid-July and will need to be turned under to make room for the fall garden. Ensure you add an inch of new compost (humus), not fresh compost, to replenish lost nutrients.
August 1st will be time to plant broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel sprout seeds, and other veggies from seed. It will remain hot until
mid-September, when cool weather veggie starters can be planted.
A few more tips. Remember to only fertilize hibiscus with hibiscus food and save your high phosphorous fertilizers for other plants. Can you plant now, when the heat is high? Yes, but you will water frequently. Pot plants that have become too dry will need to be placed in a container of water for several hours until the oxygen pockets are replenished and the “dried brick of soil” has regained its original texture.
Fall is just around the corner, although it seems like an eternity from now. Use your time now to repot, fertilize, and plan your fall selection.
Happy Gardening

Bending
By Sara Bartee
We bend, but we do not break. These words can be an inspiration to us as we travel through life. As one watches the majestic oaks, graceful pines, and sturdy pecans when the wind whips through them, there is a feeling that one element of nature is confronting another here.
The wind comes blowing in with a force unseen by the human eye, but felt or sensed to be tremendous. As the trees sway-bend…first one way, then the other—one knows the trees could give in to the force and not fight back. But, if the trees give in, they would crash to the ground, causing damage (even death) to others around them, as well as resulting in their own demise.
When the trees choose to fight back against the wind, they become stronger. Their roots reach deep into God’s earth for strength…
while small, weak limbs and leaves are blown away.
If we take this parable of trees and apply it to our lives, we find that we, too, can bend but not break. We must sink our roots in God’s goodness, leaning on Him for help. He will strengthen us, guide us, love us, and shield us from Satan’s winds.
Oh, the winds will not stop, but we can face them knowing that “this, too, shall pass.” We must nurture our faith in God day-by-day so our roots will grow deep. We cannot wait until the winds of adversity begin to blow before we sink our roots. We must be prepared. There will be times when small or weak “branches” in our lives will be torn away. We will briefly miss them, but (as mature people) we will accept these losses as a normal part of our lives.
We suffer physical ailments, financial problems, and emotional losses as we make our way through this world. These are the winds that blow against us and, while they are blowing, just as while the trees are feeling the power of the unseen wind, we are almost overcome. We feel this helplessness because we do not know how long the storm will last. But our faith will sustain us if we give it a chance.
As humans, made in God’s own image, we are endowed with the ability to love, reason, share, and seek help. Our loved ones are here for a purpose—to share with us (share our troubles, problems, and needs, as well as our good times). We must call upon our family and upon God to help us withstand the winds of life. By doing this, we, too, will bend…but we will not break.

“AH-ha” – Bob Wills’
Texas Playboys are Coming to Huntsville
Iconic Western Swing group marks their 90th Anniversary tour with a local stop.
Credited for creating and popularizing Western Swing in the 1930s, Bob Wills was a Texas fiddler with a big personality and incomparable stage presence – a man who led a group of lively musicians known as the
Texas Playboys to the national spotlight. Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys first wowed audiences across Texas and Oklahoma, and by the big-band era of the 1940s, reigned as the top live attraction in the nation. Wills,
known as the “King of Western Swing,” captivated audiences with his fast fiddling and trademark “AH-ha” calls in fan-favorite tunes like “Take Me Back to Tulsa” and “Stay a Little Longer.”

Wills’ legacy is still alive and well, now nearly 50 years after his passing, thanks to Brett Bingham, a producer and booking agent, and Jason Roberts, a fiddler and band frontman, formerly with Grammy-winning Texas band Asleep at The Wheel.
Postcards visited with Bingham and Roberts about the history of this legendary band, the reasons they are carrying the torch for Western Swing – and what fans can expect when Bob Wills’ Texas Playboys perform at Old Town Theatre in Huntsville on Friday, September 22.
Let’s start with the incredible history of this band. After Bob Wills’ death in 1975, the music did not stop. What kept the music alive?
Bingham: A group of ex-Playboys came together to keep the Bob Wills sound alive. Former steel guitarist Leon McAuliffe led the band, and he and Betty (Bob’s widow) hand-picked the other members. Those men made a promise to one another that when the first of the new band died, they would disband – and, true to their word, the group dissolved in 1986, following the death of piano player “Brother” Al Stricklin.
Post 1986, the torch was passed again – this time to two men who previously worked with Wills on stage or in the studio. What can you tell us about the 1986-2017 era of Bob Wills’ Texas Playboys?
Bingham: Eventually, with the blessing of the Bob Wills estate, guitarist-producer Tommy Allsup (a longtime Wills collaborator) and Leon Rausch (the Playboys’ last great vocalist) took over Bob Wills’

Texas Playboys. Allsup knew Bob Wills and produced his final album, For The Last Time. The two led the guys and carried on the Wills style and traditions – on stage and in the studio – for 30 years, until 2018, following the death of Allsup.
After Allsup passed away, it was time to pass the torch again. This time, you and vocalist Jason Roberts grabbed the torch. Why did you want to be a part of this?
Bingham: I had a deep connection to Bob Wills and Western Swing music from birth, essentially, but an even deeper connection to the first incarnation of the band that formed right after Mr. Wills passed away. My dad and uncle both had a relationship with Leon McAuliffe and many of the other Western Swing legends that were still alive at the time. My dad and Tommy Allsup were classmates in Claremore, Oklahoma, and hitchhiked to Tulsa quite often to see Bob’s brother Johnnie Lee Wills at Cain’s Ballroom. I ended up starting a fan club for the “Original

Texas Playboys” and even sold merch for them when I could get to the gig. They were already heroes to me, and they became friends. Growing up, I was able to be around the musicians who created this music, so I feel connected to it in a way that is hard to
explain. I feel the same passion for keeping this music alive and introducing it to a newer audience as do the ones who do it with an instrument in their hands.
Jason and I started as acquaintances,
seeing him at Asleep at the Wheel shows or other Western Swing related events –and that developed into a strong friendship as we realized we had the same vision for preserving this music we loved so much. That of course has grown into a great business

partnership, and we’re both grateful to the Wills family for their confidence in us.
You are the tour manager and content creator, and Jason leads the band. Why is Jason the right person for that job?
Bingham: Jason was the perfect choice from a bandleader standpoint. Much is made of the fact he resembles Bob Wills, plays fiddle, and played the part of Bob Wills in the stage performance A Ride With Bob. But it’s important to note that we’re not trying to imitate Bob Wills. Our band salutes not only Bob Wills, but all the Texas Playboys who shared the stage with him. We don’t imitate
as much as we present our version and interpretation of the music they created. To expand, Jason was related through marriage to Johnny Gimble, who played with Bob Wills from 1949-1951 then went on to a Country Music Hall of Fame career as a studio musician in Nashville and is a true Texas and music legend. He had the unique opportunity to “study at the feet of the master,” if you will. Additionally, he began playing in bands at a very young age and had parents that supported his “habit” by getting him to gigs all over Texas until he could get himself there. He got the Asleep at the Wheel job as soon as he was old enough to play in all the venues they traveled to all over the country.
Roberts: Even before we started that play, I’d been studying Bob Wills, his persona, and who he was – and how he interacted with his players. I’d been soaking it in since I was a kid. A Ride with Bob definitely gave me the chance to present it to audiences like I saw it in my head. But even before that play came along, I was deep into the weeds when it came to learning about Bob Wills and his music.
Bingham: I also want to mention that the other members of the band have similar experiences and are among the best players available at their respective instruments. Many of them worked with the group led by Rausch and Allsup, and all have similar backgrounds as Jason.

5 Tips for Keeping a Symptom Diary
Recurring headaches, frequent bouts of digestive discomfort, pain that won’t go away, sleep problems, asthma attacks, period pain — when uncomfortable or disruptive health issues linger, it can really impact your day-to-day life.
Pinpointing the source of the issue and how best to resolve it can be challenging. It’s why these things can persist for months…or come and go, flaring up seemingly without warning.
One tool your doctor may suggest is keeping a symptom diary.
“A symptom diary is a log of a person’s symptoms and other particular details surrounding those symptoms,” explains Erica Vinogradov, a family nurse practitioner at Houston Methodist. “It’s a focused, information-gathering exercise that helps organize these details in a way that can be useful when talking to your care provider.”
One benefit of a symptom diary is it can help you learn the potential patterns and triggers associated with your specific issue.
Here are five tips for keeping a symptom diary:
1. Put pen to paper or try an app
Writing your symptoms in a diary can be somewhat therapeutic, like journaling for mental clarity.
Or you might prefer the convenience of using an app. There are many symptom diary and symptom tracking apps
2. Know what information to include
The key details of a general symptom diary include:
• The date
• Symptoms experienced
• Timing of symptoms
• Duration of symptoms
• Symptom severity
• Potential triggers
• Medications or remedies used
• How you responded to treatment
3. Be consistent
“We’re looking for patterns, and the higher quality the information, the better,” says Vinogradov. “Try to record every single day and include the same information every time — being as clear, concise and organized as possible.”
Don’t leave any fields blank, as this can leave room for misinterpretation.
4. Be honest
Don’t omit, downplay, or exaggerate symptoms.
“There are studies suggesting that daily documentation of symptoms might increase a person’s perception of the severity of the symptom,” adds Vinogradov. “This gets back to consistency. Try to document your symptoms without bias each day.”
5. Share your symptom diary with your primary care provider
At your next appointment, let your provider know you’ve been tracking your symptoms via a diary and provide the information.

Coach Michelle Rochinski
by Ruth Fields
Original story ran in October 2022
When the Lake Creek High School softball team returned home after winning the state championship in June, all eyes on the bus were focused on Montgomery’s Chick-fil-A. For the second consecutive year, the marquee congratulated the team, but this time it proclaimed, “Congrats LCHS
Softball 2X State Champs 84-1.”
After the team’s 41-0 season in 2022, it was not a stated goal to go undefeated again, says Michelle Rochinski, head coach. Instead, the mission was to be back-to-back state champions. As Lake Creek’s winning streak got longer, however, people noticed. “It was adding a little bit of pressure to the kids and to the coaching staff,” Michelle admits. The team finished the season with a record of 43-1, setting a state record with its streak of 82 wins. It also joined an elite group: only 13 high school softball teams in Texas have won back-to-back state championships.
Michelle Rochinski says she coaches to help students, not for recognition, but she has been duly recognized. In 2022, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association named the Lake Creek softball coaches as best coaching staff, and Michelle was the Texas Girls Coaches Association coach of the year. In addition, Michelle was surprised to be selected as coach of the year (of all sports) by the National Federation of High Schools. So far this year, Michelle has been named coach of the year for the district, as well as for the greater Houston area. After the win at state, Michelle announced her decision to step down as head coach. “It was time,” she says. “As a coach and as a mentor, I had done things I never would have dreamed about.” Next year, she will continue in her role as assistant athletic coordinator and will be an assistant spring golf coach. Her son Cade will be a sophomore football player at Howard Payne University, and her daughter Kalee will be a freshman softball player at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Michelle is looking forward to watching their games. “It wouldn’t be fair to the kids at Lake Creek if my head wasn’t there all the time,” she says.
Michelle says it has been rewarding to watch team members blossom athletically, personally, and academically—and she cherishes “the lifelong relationships I have with the players I had the opportunity to coach.”

I don’t know what a novelist in the “thrillers” genre is supposed to look like, but after reading the first chapter in each of his three books (where in each case someone is found murdered), I would have expected author Timothy Sojka to look a little more grisly. Instead, I am greeted inside a smartly decorated office by a tall, slim man wearing a tie and pinstripe suit, with salt and pepper hair and a neatly trimmed beard.
As he reaches to shake my hand, I wonder when I am going to see beyond the businessman and get a glimpse into the mind of the award-winning storyteller whose novels are set deep in the Piney Woods of East Texas. When he sits down and starts talking, I pick up on his drawl…and then as he crosses his left leg over the right, the cuff of his pant leg rises just enough to show a mostly-purple multicolored striped sock, and I begin to sense the creative side of him.
How long have you been a writer, and how do you balance it with your real estate business?
I knew at a really young age I wanted to be a writer. I just knew I didn’t want to be a starving author. A lot of successful writers have other jobs. A lot of them are literary. It’s just that my other job is selling about 200 homes per year, plus I do commercial real estate as well. I think we all might like

to have a book where we could quit our day job-and honestly, that used to be my goal--but now I just want to write something great.
What do you think makes a writer great?
Well, some people don’t like to get tough feedback, but I love it. I swap with other authors, and there are a couple in particular I really value, because I can be tough on them, and they know they can be tough on me. When I was younger, I couldn’t handle that kind of feedback, but now I can. I know my books are so much better because they were tough on me.
Your first two novels, Payback Jack and Politikill, address political issues. How does that exactly work in the world of fiction?
I want to write something that changes the way people think. When I was about 15 or 16, there was a scandal about politicians who were taking bribes; the FBI came in, and they got prosecuted. So, I started thinking, “Man, that’s a great idea. We should be holding our politicians accountable.” Then 30 years goes by and nothing else happens, and that really bothered me. So, I could write a non-fiction book about corruption, but that would be boring. What if, instead, I wrote a thriller about a woman who was really affected by political corruption and then started killing people? I can use the story to talk through more effective ways to

deal with corruption – not killing politicians (obviously), but term limits and the like –that is a lot more compelling than writing a non-fiction book about it.
So, these are important subjects to you personally?
Yes. Like my first book, Payback Jack, deals with the death penalty. It really bothers me the way we handle it in the United States. I can research and write about that, but my opinion doesn’t mean a lot to most people. But if I can write something that really entertains you and presents both sides of the story, then lets you make a decision about it, I have accomplished my goal.
You grew up in Silsbee, in the Big Thicket area of Texas, right?
How influential is that in your writing?
My (writer’s) voice is all about where I come from. All my books are set in East Texas, and they always will be. I feel like I get pulled back to Silsbee like a salmon being pulled back to its breeding ground. I
don’t go there in my dreams every day, but I go back there a lot. I think about things and the people there. I know the rhythms of how they talk. Sitting in the living room, with my uncle Raymond Gilmore and my grandparents Myrtis and Selman Gilmore, listening to them talk--that’s how I learned to tell stories and entertain people. It makes you feel differently and think differently when those are your first storytellers.
Besides your family members, who else has influenced your writing?
I love the Georges as storytellers – George Jones and George Strait. I also love the Charlies – Charlie Daniels, Charlie Rich, and (most importantly) Charlie Pride. I mean, the first people to paint pictures in my head weren’t books. Hearing Kiss an Angel Good Morning by Charlie Pride was the first time I remember words painting pictures in my mind. was buying you off. My voice has been shaped more by country music than by the fancy authors I’ve read.
What are some unique things about growing up in a small East Texas town that show up in your books?
The first death I ever witnessed was there. By the way, you get better food at funerals in small towns than you do at birthdays. So, you were excited to go to a funeral. Sure, you had to sit for a couple of hours and look at dead bodies, but then you got to have everybody’s best cooking! I also love that I’d be at a swimming hole where someone died 15 years ago, or even a week ago, and people would still be sitting around telling the stories. Everything was so dark and romantic. I wasn’t born in East Texas. I was
born in Chicago. But something really rough happened to me when I was six, and I didn’t trust adults. My parents got divorced, and I got shipped to Silsbee, Texas. I started picking up things really young –how people talked and how they acted – so that I could decide whether I could trust them. When you’re young and you can’t trust anyone, you become a storyteller.
You write on some pretty dark subjects. How can that be a challenge?
We all want our lives to be easy, but in a novel, we all want our characters to go through hell. If you wrote a book where everything went okay for the characters, it’s not going to sell anything. So you want your character to go through holy hell. You have to make their lives as difficult and as tough as possible. And it’s kind of sad, because when you create a character, you really get to know

them. You really do. I mean, you spend more time with them than you do anyone else outside of your wife or kids.
Do you have a favorite character from your books?
To this day, I still really love Smith Driskill from Payback Jack, because he’s the first character I ever saw and felt. And Teeny in Claws, my new book I’m working on now that will come out next year, is my current favorite. She’s an eight-year-old who has gone through some terrible things. She can talk, but she chooses not to. I like that limit. It makes her more interesting, because she can’t say anything. I think the best characters are defined by their limits, not their strengths.
One thing I noticed in your books is how descriptive you are. For instance, I think all our readers would be able to relate to how you describe the weather in southeast Texas, “The heat surrendering to its superior tormentor – humidity. The stickiness of your clothes, the line of sweat forming across your back, supergluing skin to shirt.”
You have to get people off the page. When I read and I see the words in front of me, I hate that. But when I read and I can see pictures in my brain, that’s where I want to be. The best compliment I get is when someone says, “Hey, I read it like it was a movie. It should be a movie. I saw it in my brain.” That’s the greatest. I try to write to people’s senses a lot, as well as to their sense of humor.
Timothy Gene Sojka is the author of Amazon bestselling thriller Payback Jack, and his novels Politikill and 39: Your Last Birthday are both Maxy Award winners. His latest book, Claws, a thriller dealing with the subject of child trafficking, is due out in 2024. Tim is a Realtor/Broker and CEO. He is happily married with one grown daughter. He paddleboards for stress relief, and runs so he can eat Tex-Mex.

Is Lifestyle Creep threatening your future?
As the summer winds down and everyone is getting back to a “normal” routine, it is a good time evaluate how you are progressing on your future goals. While planning may seem intimidating, it can be fun if you take the time to envision your future lifestyle. We often refer to this as creating a bucket list. These can be basic lifestyle goals, or the things, places, and people you want to enjoy. It is not about the money as much as it is about the experiences and memories we make along the way.
What are some steps we can take to identify our goals (bucket list) and work toward achieving them?
1. Dream big but be realistic – Your goals should be a stretch to achieve, but don’t make them such a stretch that you get frustrated and stop working toward them. Sometimes it helps to break them up into several small steps to keep you on track.
2. Get on the same page with your partner – While it is ok to have individual goals, you need to be on the same page as your partner. As a team we can design our future lifestyle in a way that we both get what we want individually and as a couple.
3. Pay yourself first – Consider funding your goals as a bill. It is just one of those payments that must be made each and every month. After a few payments you won’t even notice it anymore and your goals will be less difficult to accomplish.
4. Don’t let Lifestyle Creep derail your plans – What is Lifestyle Creep? It is the increase in lifestyle that takes place as your incomes increase over time. It is easy to let happen, but it can be very detrimental to your future. As incomes increase consider paying yourself more each month – even if it is only a portion of the increase. This will keep Lifestyle Creep at bay and your goals on target.
5. Prioritize your buckets (goals) – Consider your bucket list as having multiple buckets. Maybe a short-term bucket and a long-term bucket. By doing so, you can prioritize which bucket is more important to you. Be careful; don’t let this derail the long-term bucket.
If you will spend some time to design your life, you will likely find success. If you need help, we are here to guide you through the entire process. Give us a call to schedule a time to get started.

What’s Cookin’
Saigon Noodle Salad
Ingredients
Dressing:
¼ cup water, or more to taste
3 Tbs lime juice
3 Tbs fish sauce
3 Tbs brown sugar, or more to taste
1 clove garlic, minced
1 tsp minced fresh ginger root
½ tsp Sriracha chile sauce
Salad:
1 (8 oz) pkg (linguine-width) rice noodles
2 cups thinly sliced Napa (Chinese) cabbage
1 ½ cups matchstick-cut carrots
8 oz grilled shrimp
1 cup bean sprouts
½ English cucumber, halved lengthwise and cut into thin slices
2 green onions, thinly sliced
2 ⅔ Tbs chopped fresh mint
2 ⅔ Tbs chopped fresh cilantro
2 ⅔ Tbs chopped fresh basil
½ cup coarsely chopped peanuts
Directions
Step 1: Whisk water, lime juice, fish sauce, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, and Sriracha together in a bowl until the sugar is dissolved.
Step 2: Bring a large pot of water to a full boil; remove from heat and soak rice noodles in the hot water for 1 minute. Stir to separate the noodles and continue soaking until the noodles are tender, about 3 minutes more. Drain noodles and rinse with cold water until cooled. Shake noodles in colander to drain as much water as possible.
Step 3: Mix noodles, cabbage, carrots, shrimp, bean sprouts, cucumber slices, green onions, mint, cilantro, and basil together in a large bowl. Drizzle the dressing over the salad and toss to coat. Top with chopped peanuts.
Tips:
Dressing can be made ahead and refrigerated for up to 5 days.
You can use sambal oelek chile pepper sauce or red pepper flakes in place of Sriracha, if that better fits your tastes.
Any leftover grilled meat works well in this salad: shrimp, pork, or chicken are all great options.
The salad is very flexible; try adding julienned red or yellow pepper, pea pods, baby bok choy, or substitute sliced romaine lettuce for the cabbage.

Carolina Red Slaw
Ingredients
2 lbs finely chopped green cabbage
2 tsp kosher salt
3/4 cup ketchup
1/2 cup finely diced red bell peppers
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
3 Tbs white sugar
1 tsp smoked paprika
1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper
1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
1 Tbs sambal chili sauce, or to taste
1 Tbs Sriracha hot sauce, or to taste
2 Tbs sliced green onions, or as needed (optional)
Directions
Step 1: Add finely chopped cabbage to a large bowl and sprinkle over the salt. Mix well and let sit for 30 minutes. If using fine salt, use half the amount.
Step 2: Transfer cabbage to a strainer and set aside to drain for 10 minutes.
Step 3: Add ketchup, red bell pepper, cider vinegar, sugar, smoked paprika, black pepper, cayenne pepper, sambal chili sauce, and sriracha to a bowl; stir until dressing is well combined.

Ken Holland, Edward Jones Financial Advisor
For Ken Holland of Huntsville, being an Edward Jones Financial Advisor isn’t just about giving people advice on how to invest their money; more than anything it is about serving his clients to meet their individual needs. “When you work with an Advisor, they are able to look at your situation holistically and provide advice to your specific situation. It is more than managing a portfolio of investments and transacting trades. It is coming up with strategies that allow you to move towards your specific goals,” says Holland.
Holland offers a variety of financial and investment services, including both personal and business retirement plans, college saving plans, and life insurance. He can also assist with existing 401k or other previous employer retirement plans.
Holland’s desire to help and serve others is clear in both his personal and professional life. A native of Spring, Texas and a Sam Houston State University graduate, Holland has never been afraid of hard work or lost the ambition to help others. “I got into this business because I really enjoy working with people individually. I get to sit with individuals and families every day and help them plan for their future. I enjoy being someone they can trust and count on,” said Holland. “I find joy in seeing people move forward in their lives. I want to serve people well.”
Melanie Oates is the Business Office Administrator. “I’m the Financial Advisor, but we are a team,” explains Holland. “She is critical to our success, and we run the office like a team.”
That environment of teamwork and serving others is exactly what drew Holland to Edward Jones. He is part of a network that includes several Edward Jones Financial Advisors in offices throughout Huntsville. “It wasn’t ever about any other firm. Edward Jones creates a culture that is very intent on building relationships between the advisor and client and looking holistically at what is in the best interest of the client. I am part

of a region that stretches from The Woodlands to Huntsville, and we work together to learn from each other and serve our clients better.”
Holland says Edward Jones teaches its advisors to really lean into the person, understand their needs, and treat them as valuable people, not just an investment product. Becoming a Financial Advisor for Edward Jones is not an easy process; the person must study for and pass three financial exams and complete extensive training (which for Holland, occurred virtually due to Covid). Holland moved into the current Huntsville location in January 2023.
Holland is also deeply embedded in the Huntsville community, serving on several governmental entities such as the City Board of Adjustments, where he serves as Chairman; the HISD School Board, where he serves as Secretary; and volunteer chaplain for the Huntsville Police Department. In 2021, he was also appointed by Governor Abbott to the Statewide Health Coordinating Council as one of only two members who are not in the medical profession. Also, he formerly served on the City of Huntsville Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) board and the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, with two years on the Executive Board. “I’ve always liked being a part of the local government process as a volunteer,” said Holland.

Ken Holland & Melanie Oates
“I find joy in seeing people move forward in their lives. I want to serve people well.”
However, his journey to serve others sent him on several paths before landing him in what he hopes to be his final career destination as a Financial Advisor for Edward Jones. While in college, he started out in the restaurant business as a busboy, then worked his way into management at the once popular Mexican restaurant El Chico in Huntsville. Holland says some of his best relationships today were cultivated from that experience. He managed El Chico until graduating with his business degree from SHSU in 2000.
While Holland had ambitions to work in state government early on, he actually ended up at Motorola’s Semiconductor Division, and his entry into corporate life began. In July of 2000, Holland and his new bride Nicole moved to Austin, Texas. However, after 7 years in the big city and having two children, the couple began to consider leaving the city to come “home” to Huntsville.
“Nicole has family here, so we were always coming back to visit,” Holland explains. “One night, we were having dinner with friends while in Huntsville, and on the way back to her parents’ house, I asked, ‘So you ready to move back to Huntsville yet?’”. She didn’t say ‘no’ – and she usually did – so we started seriously talking about it.”
In 2007, Holland and his family made the move back to Huntsville and reengaged with University Heights Baptist Church (UHBC), where Ken and Nicole had met. Both had been involved in the college ministry. “It felt like

coming home for both of us,” says Holland. They volunteered again in college ministry with the church, then Ken was asked to serve in other leadership capacities that ultimately led to a career transition. In November of 2011, Holland was tapped to be the Minister of Administration for UHBC, which entailed overseeing the finance, human resources, and facility operations for the church. In accordance with his “serving others” mentality, Ken and Nicole traveled with a mission team from UHBC to Uganda in 2012. Here, their life would take a new twist.
The couple met Sharon Nakandi who would become their third child. A Ugandan orphan, Sharon immediately bonded with Ken and
Nicole, and when they came back to the states, the adoption process began. It was a year full of trips back to Uganda and working through the adoption process with lawyers and officials. In February 2014, the Hollands received a court date to decide whether they could adopt Sharon. The whole family, including children Jake and Paige, made the trip.
“The whole family was there for three weeks, and I stayed in Uganda for four additional weeks while we waited for the adoption to be finalized in April 2014. Sharon and I flew back to the United States, and the adoption was finalized in November of that year.”
Holland continued working for UHBC,

but as he evaluated where he was in life and the church’s needs, he started to sense another transition was coming. After visiting with a friend who was a financial advisor and consulting with others, Holland decided to give the new career path a try.
“I kept coming back to finding a role that
allowed me to help people and assist in giving them financial freedom to plan their lives,” said Holland. “My friend described it as ‘still getting to do ministry.’ I knew that was what I wanted to do.”
Holland said he prayed about it and

started the process.
“I really wanted to open an office in Huntsville because I have been part of the community for so long,” says Holland. “It is a blessing to be here.” In late 2019, he began the process by working with an Edward Jones recruiter; by December he was offered a role with the company. In January 2020, he began studying for his licenses to ultimately become a Financial Advisor with Edward Jones.
“Once I saw their business model, I was really intrigued by and attracted to Edward Jones. They provide so many resources, support, and training for their advisors.” Says Holland. “I value each of my colleagues, and I am immensely grateful to be able to learn from them and be part of a company that creates a culture of working together to help others.”
Regardless of his job title, Holland says he has always wanted to be involved in his community and with Edward Jones has found a place he can do just that. “I want to be in the role until I can’t.”

From the Mouths of Babes
I told my nephew a watermelon was gonna grow in his stomach because he ate some of the seeds. I kid you not, he looked me straight in the eyes and said, “Nope, because there’s no sunlight, so you’re wrong, and college has failed you.” He’s 7!
While putting together a tater tot casserole, my 7-year-old came across half of a tot. I told her it was a baby tot, and she corrected me by saying, “It’s a tottler.” And…dads everywhere stood up and applauded.
When you’re living out of a hotel for a week and are using Uber Eats…your 3-year-old may start saying things like, “Mom, call the mailman and order pizza and macaroni!

I bought my 6 year old Grandson, Dillon, a large shareable 3 Musketeers bar. After opening it & sharing one of the bars with me, he stated, “Mawmaw, they messed up on this candy bar.” I asked, “Why do you say that, Dillon?” He replied, “Cuz they only put 2 bars in here & it says 3 Musketeers!!!”
2-year-old (eating his lunch): Papa’s coffee hot?
Me: Yeah baby, it’s hot. Don’t touch.
2-year-old: Me blow on it for Papa?
It was at this point, I witnessed with horror, my 2-year-old attempt to blow on my freshly made coffee, only to spit a half-eaten chicken nugget straight into it.”

Bath Time Stress
Q: My 14-month-old was taking baths just fine until about a month ago when he became enraged because I wouldn’t let him stand up in the sink (which is where I’ve bathed him until now). Ever since then, he becomes hysterical when I take him to the sink or the tub. I’ve tried putting him in without water (with toys) in order to help him re-form a positive association, but no luck. We’ve gone to the local indoor pool twice now, and he began to relax and splash around a little by the end of the second trip. I would love not to have to rely solely on sponge baths and showers with mom to get him clean. Should I cater to his fears and rest bath time for now, or should I push the issue?
A: Although it may look like it, this is not rebellion. Your son freaked when you wouldn’t let him out of the sink. This may have been the biggest emotional reaction he’s had to anything thus far in his short life, so it made a big impression, one that’s going to take time and patience to undo. In the meantime, it’s sponge baths, and showers and baths with mommy. When he’s comfortable going into the tub and being held in your arms (don’t turn on the water until you’re in there, and even then, turn it just past trickle), try getting out without him and seeing how he does. But give it at least a month before you make that attempt. Bottom line: This too shall pass.

The Grands
1 What is your grandparent name and does it have a special meaning?
Mi Mi (check out Mimi’s Song and video by Badanamu; “Mimi is love!” I sing it to my great-grandbabies.
2 Number of grandchildren and age range?
Three grandchildren (25-29); three great-grandchildren (22 months – 10 years) and one on the way!
3 Favorite activity with them?
Coloring, drawing, painting pictures; singing and dancing; playing ball outdoors; and having picnics at the pool.
4 Advice to other/new grandparents?
Be kind, be patient, participate in activities with them, take them to church (each of them should have their own Bible), be consistent on rules and respect. Also, LISTEN to them. Praise and reward where it is due, but also discipline when it is due (talk, guide, and hear them out also).
5 What’s your fondest memory of your grandparents?
Did not have the privilege of grandparents. That is why I’m the Mi Mi that I am—always do my best to be there for grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They are a beautiful gift from God, and they need special love and attention— no matter what age they are.
Dolores MORENO
6 What do you hope your grandkids remember about you?
My love and attention; the laughter and memories; and all the times I attended events and activities they were involved in.

Growing up in the Midwest, I had one as a pet. I referred to it as a chameleon. I’ve also heard this critter called a lizard, a newt, and a gecko. What I’m referring to is the green anole. I have to say I was actually shocked when I first moved here and saw them running wild outside!
Green anoles (Anolis carolinensis) are lizards, but they are not geckos, chameleons, or newts. The green anole is the only kind of anole native to the United States. They can be found in Texas (of course), but also in Louisiana, the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, and Hawaii.
Green anoles have the ability to change color. Sometimes they are green, sometimes brown. It is widely believed their color depends on their surroundings. In reading some of the studies done on this critter, scientists found that green anoles often did not match the color of their surroundings.
One scientist who witnessed a male-male encounter found that the anoles changed color frequently, and the “winner” of the encounter was green, and the “loser” was brown. It is now believed that stress is one of the most common factors of an anole turning brown. There could be other factors
affecting the change as well. It could be the result of the body warming or cooling. Body color in anoles is very complex, and there’s no simple answer. If only they could talk.
If you’ve ever observed an anole in the wild, you’ve no doubt seen the red, balloon-like display under the chin. It’s a thin flap of skin that is inflated by a group of bones called the hyoid apparatus. Some people call this a throat fan, but the real name for it is the dewlap. When inflated, you will also see the anole bob its head. Anoles use the dewlap and bobbing as a way of communicating. Males will display it when defending their territory, when deterring predators, and to bait female anoles. When the dewlap is visible, an anole may bite. Females have dewlaps as well, but they are much smaller and they rarely use them.
Green anoles are considered insectivores. They eat cockroaches, ants, flies, and spiders. Because their eyes move independently from each other, they are able to scan a large area around them to find their next meal. They are great climbers. You may have seen them climb up a smooth, straight wall or fence. Under each toe they have tiny flaps called lamella and microscopic hairs
called setae. They both act as adhesives that help them climb.
Anoles shed their skin. In adults, it happens every 4-6 weeks on average. It sheds in sections, rather than one big piece like snakes. The anole’s color turns to a grayish, milky white when it’s about to shed. Some will eat the shed skin.
FUN AND AMAZING FACT: their tails detach when threatened or if something grabs them. The detached tail will wiggle, which is meant to distract the predator while the anole escapes. A new tail will grow back, but may be shorter or have a little different shape than the original.
You may be able to find stores that sell green anoles as pets. If you want one as a pet, never take one from the wild. Chances are high they won’t survive. Make sure you research how to care for one. You need to be aware of not only what to feed it, but also heating, lighting, humidity levels, substrate, housing, and common health problems you may encounter.

Odessa Meteor Crater
The third largest meteor crater in Texas is located ten miles southwest of Odessa and three miles south of Interstate Highway 20 in south central Ector County. Three craters make up the depression, which was formed in prehistoric time when thousands of iron meteorites fell on the site. The largest crater covers ten acres. Two smaller and now-filled craters flank it. The rim of the largest crater rises from five to seven feet above the general level of the surrounding plain. The roughly circular depression is 500 to 650 feet wide from rim to rim.
In 1892, Julius D. Henderson, a local rancher, discovered the depression while searching for a lost calf. He only noted that the depression was different from the surrounding terrain. Although several people realized that the depression and its fragments were unusual, no one recognized the site as a meteor crater until Elias H. Sellards went to Ector County in 1922. As director of the Bureau of Economic Geology, Sellards was looking for potash when he came upon the crater in the field. After his discovery, scientists from many places came to study the crater. In September 1939, an excavation project was funded by the University of Texas, Ector County, and several businesses and individuals. Machinery and lumber were bought for construction and operation of a shaft and a road. The Work Projects Administration provided workers.
Today, a museum is located onsite, providing historical information.

…Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.
Mark 1:17
The words of Jesus above were spoken to some fishermen. They were spoken as Jesus walked by the sea. Ever notice how many things in the life of Jesus happened by the sea?
These men had a trade; they were fishermen, something they perhaps had learned from their fathers. It was the way they made a living. It was how they put food on the table. They knew their job well. Why would they want to trade a way of life they knew so well for something they didn’t know?
“Come after me!” Was this a request or a demand? Or was it an invitation? Let’s call it an invitational challenge He empowered them to take. What would they get? At this point, all they were receiving were His words, “I will make you.” They left on His words. They left on His promise. They followed, and what an adventurous journey they took. They spent three years with their creator and were re-created into fishers of men. Their life with Jesus was an adventure they would cherish for eternity.
For us today, we get to share in that journey and adventure, reliving them every time we read the Gospels. I find something new and exciting every time. Start a count on the seaside happenings in the life of Jesus (if for nothing else, just to see how many you can
find). Then listen to the wind and pounding waves…above the roar, you just might hear the voice of Jesus say, “Come after me.”
