The other day, we were getting ready to leave our house. As I was on the driveway, my attention shifted to the powerline above. More than 11 years ago, some sweet friends (who had twin littles at the time) lived across the street from us. One day our doorbell rang. It seems they were flying a kite, which had gotten tangled on the powerline above our driveway. We told them not to worry about it, it would eventually come down. What we didn’t know is that this particular kite apparently has the half-life of uranium! Our friends have long since moved, but that kite has kept us in touch over the more than a decade they’ve been gone. An occasional texted photo - the latest one seen here - is always good for a giggle and a “Hello, we’re thinking of you!” Those little twins are going to graduate high school this year. I have many sweet memories of spending time with, and around, them while they did “nothing”…like fly a kite. So today, I just want to remind you that, sometimes, those nothings that make up your day may actually be something important to someone else. And who knows? · Ear pain. Pain isn’t always associated with a cancerous lesion, so be aware of any abnormality. Because oral cancer can spread quickly, early detection is important. An oral cancer examination can detect early signs of cancer. The exam is painless and only takes a few minutes. Many dentists will perform the evaluation during your regular dental hygiene visit and examination. During the exam, your dentist or hygienist will check your face, neck, lips, and entire mouth for possible signs of cancer. When oral cancer is detected early, it is often treated with surgery or radiation therapy, yet oral cancer that is more advanced when diagnosed may use a combination of treatments. For example, radiation therapy and chemotherapy are often given at the same time. Another treatment option is targeted therapy, which is a newer type of cancer treatment that uses drugs or other substances to precisely identify and attack cancer cells. The choice of treatment depends on your general health, where in your mouth or throat the cancer began, the size and type of the tumor, and whether the cancer has spread.

There are a variety of symptoms you may see with oral cancer. If any of these symptoms are present for more than two weeks, please consult with a dentist or doctor as your life could literally depend on it. Symptoms to look for include:

· Difficulty moving your jaw or tongue.

· A white or red patch in your mouth.

· Swelling of your jaw that causes dentures to fit poorly or become uncomfortable.

Sadly, I’ve found oral cancer in some patients over the years. It’s never a fun thing to inform someone of their diagnosis. Oral cancer accounts for roughly three percent of all cancers diagnosed annually in the United States, or about 53,000 new cases each year. It occurs most often in people over the age of 40 and affects more than twice as many men as women. Most oral cancers are related to tobacco use, alcohol use (or both), or infection by the human papilloma virus (HPV) but sometimes there isn’t really any apparent reason for the cancer.

· Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or speaking.

· Numbness in your tongue or other areas of your mouth.

The curtain rises. The production begins. The spotlight illumines the cast of Bella Luna Studios. Villa Bella Luna, “The House of the Beautiful Moon,” is a French name that was given to the home of Chip and Windy Looney as they were welcomed on their first night by the cascading glow of a beautiful moon. Bella Luna is also the name given to another beautiful glow, an undertaking by their daughters and daughters’ friends as they step forward into a new adventure born of initiative and creativity. Let’s meet the cast of Bella Luna Studios and enjoy the night of their first premiere film performance, which took place on Lilly, Callie, Levi, Sydney & Anelyesse

The filming of this silent production took 2-3 days total, although it happened over a longer period of time when the group could assemble at the Looney home. With costumes, jewelry, and props acquired from “mom’s closet,” The Goodwill Store, and a few online finds, the friends “got to goof around” and produced this delightful piece which includes fake mustaches, a banana phone, and although not true to the period, a Nature Valley granola bar. The project was filmed by iPhone and then edited with iMovie, which became a 12-hour labor of love by Anelysse.

Claudette, the feature performance of the evening which imparts a “Hitchcock” flavor to the night, is about a sad widow who needs something to do with her life, so she tries to be an artist and sell her art. After drawing for hours, the man from her past shows up and they fall in love, or so she thinks. In addition to using the site of Villa Bella Luna for filming the production, two scenes were filmed at The Wynne Home Arts Center in Huntsville. Callie Lynch and Sydney Stoermer starred in this film in addition to Anelysse, Lilly, Levi, and Nathan. Claudette’s drawings as shown in the film are actual artworks by Anelysse and are a testament to her tremendous talent in this art medium as well. Thursday, August 4th. At the event, the cast, their families, and friends enjoyed a threefold series of films produced by this group of talented and delightful young people, with one of the films being a production by fiveyear-old Eli Looney.

The evening began with Eli’s 2-minute film entitled Farmer Eli According to his parents, this adorable production was entirely of Eli’s own creative imagination and direction, with mom Windy serving as the videographer. The next film was the first initiative by the Bella Luna Studios cast, The Gaslight Murder, which can be found for viewing on YouTube. It started out as a homeschool co-op project by Anelysse and Lilly Looney, along with lifelong friends Levi and Nathan Dolney. According to this group, they love old films, wanted to do a period piece, and so chose the 1944 classic Gaslight to serve as the inspiration for their own creative endeavor. With the addition of Charlie Chaplin antics and Vaudevillestyle music, the murder plot comes alive!

Community Church, located on the downtown square, where Chip is pastor. The vintage-style décor provided a perfect backdrop for this exciting display of youthful talent. The evening flowed seamlessly until little Adeline, the 2- year-old daughter of Windy and Chip, unknowingly interjected herself into the night’s festivities by inadvertently unplugging the projection equipment and bringing Claudette to a screeching halt. Not to be thwarted by this unplanned event, and ready for the challenge as any veteran director would be, Anelysse jumped to her feet, brought all the actors to the front for introductions and a bow, and then directed the guests to the refreshment table, by which time the problem was resolved, and the night’s entertainment continued. Laughs and applause ensued during the evening, and a standing ovation provided a well-deserved ending to the hard work and commitment of these young actors, along with the inspiration they embody.

ANELYSSE LOONEY: I have always wanted to be an actor, but it’s kinda hard when you live in a small town and don’t have any connections. So, I thought, what better way to get experience than making my own films? So, I got my lifelong best friends Levi and Nathan, and my sister Lilly, to help with the first film, The Gaslight Murder. The next film was Claudette, and we included more friends in the cast. In fact, I would say that this is more of a friend group than a film group. We just honestly have a blast doing this together. I am the director. I make the plans, choose the dates, and basically boss everyone around! I really want to continue making films with my friends, and hopefully do some musicals as well as fantasy. I’m homeschooled and going into 11th grade this year. After graduation, I’m thinking about going to trade school for film, then getting a job at a studio, and hopefully becoming a filmmaker or actor someday.

LILLY LOONEY: I joined this so I might become better at acting, and I hope to become an actress in the future, possibly with productions on the Disney Channel. It’s been fun to experience acting and to have fun with my friends this way. I’ve performed in a play at the Huntsville Public Library entitled The Importance of Being Earnest, and also had a role as a 1920s flapper in a film. I’m homeschooled and entering my 9th-grade year.

LEVI DOLNEY: I’m 16 and a junior attending Coldspring High School. My interests are photography, cinematography, audio/visual, theater, and writing. I helped with a lot of the storyline on these productions and played parts in them as well. I’ve grown up with Anelysse and Lilly as lifelong friends, and we have enjoyed doing this together.

NATHAN DOLNEY: I will be attending Coldspring High School as a freshman this year. I look forward to playing percussion in the high school band. In Claudette, I’m the man who gets pick-pocketed by Mark, and at the end of this film, it is revealed that I was Claude in The Gaslight Murder. My favorite scene was when I got hit by the piano. I loved doing creative stunts and getting to play parts in both films.

I joined the group by accident, you might say. I was spending the night with my friend Callie (she was part of the group), and I just showed up the next day with her for filming. I loved how fun and creative everyone was and how we kind of just went with the flow, and it ended up being something good. I played the mean lady who dragged Claudette away to the asylum. The behind-thescenes work was my favorite part of the production to be involved with. I used to be a student at Alpha Omega and in the drama club for two years, but we are moving this year, and I will be attending Liberty University online.

DEAR GABBY I am well beyond drinking age and enjoy drinking wine in the evening. My friends are always telling me reasons, pro and con, about why I should, or should not, drink. I paid no attention to them until one of them told me that drinking wine would make you fat. That got my attention! Do you think drinking wine makes you fat?

JUST RIGHT DEAR JR Absolutely not! Wine does not make you fat; it actually makes you lean. You lean on walls, chairs, and (occasionally) people. I am not a “cork dork.” I can’t even get down the eight glasses of water I’m supposed to drink daily. Now, my neighbor is a wine enthusiast. The more wine she drinks, the more enthusiastic she gets. How much wine to drink should probably be considered on a case-by-case basis. It is my paltry understanding that you should open the bottle to let it breathe. If it doesn’t look like it’s breathing, give it mouth-to-mouth. Just be careful not to get a wine hangover, otherwise known as the Grape Depression.

How did the Christmas Lighting Festival project come about? I can remember, as a child, when we had the Trail of Lights. This event ceased to exist when I was 10 or 11 years old. I moved away, then came back, and have since opened several businesses here in Huntsville. Around Christmas time, I noticed we didn’t have any Christmas lighting downtown. After doing a little research, I discovered Huntsville had not had decent Christmas lighting for the past 18 years. That’s when I approached Main Street. We developed a plan to execute this project and make it happen. Huntsville DBA worked collaboratively with the city and the county as equal contributors to this project. As a result, this year we will have a Christmas Lighting Festival that will include 22 lampposts around the 4-block square surrounding the courthouse. There will also be wreaths, garland, and wrapped trees on the courthouse lawn, as well as a nativity scene. Santa will also be present! Eventually, our goal is to include the entire 9-block radius, which covers “Every success story is a constant adaptation, revision and change.”

When Justin Killingsworth, current and reelected president of Downtown Business Alliance returned to Huntsville, he knew he wanted to bring change to downtown Huntsville--and that in order to do so, he had to step forward and get involved. As the current president of DBA, he is working closely with Annel Guadalupe, Main Street ManagerCity of Huntsville, and other entities to bring back some of the things he remembers while growing up in Huntsville, like the Christmas Trail of Lights.

What is the difference between Huntsville Main Street, and Huntsville DBA? Main Street and Huntsville DBA are two separate organizations. The City of Huntsville was designated as a Main Street City by the Texas Historical Commission in 2001, and has been a Main Street City for the past 21 years. The Main Street program and the Main Street Advisory Board support the Huntsville community in the preservation and revitalization of our historic downtown. Huntsville DBA is a nonprofit organization, whose main priority is to promote and increase traffic to downtown businesses, as well as give back to the community. Huntsville DBA was formed in 2007.

When will we start seeing this take place? Lights will start going up in October, and we will actually be lighting them on the 2nd Saturday of November. We will host a Christmas Lighting Festival on November 12, from 3:30 – 7:30 p.m. All merchants, whether they’re a member of HDBA or not, will be invited to remain open and serve something complimentary, whether food, drinks, or adult beverages. This is our way of giving back to the community. The Rotary Club will also be involved. They’ll be serving hot chocolate. HDBA will be offering a chance to win $1000 in prizes! All you have to do is pop in to the local shops and get a stamp on a card that will be provided to participants during the event. There will be lots of fun, food, drinks, and prizes! Mark your calendars, and SAVE THE DATE! What is your vision for Downtown Huntsville? The vision is to create a “downtown life atmosphere” that will invite people to come, hang out, and enjoy what Huntsville has to offer. Whether the attraction is our local history, antique and resale shops, or nightlife, our goal is to create a sense of stability so there is always something to look forward to doing in downtown Huntsville. This means all the downtown merchants need to get involved. We want to revitalize, but also recreate, some of what used to be. This will help business owners on the square thrive. In recent years, we’ve had a lot of turnover in the businesses downtown, and much of that was due to lack of traffic flow to the downtown area. We plan to improve that. I recently attended a groundbreaking ceremony for the department of agriculture arena at Sam Houston State University. Step 2: In a mixing bowl, beat together 3 cups of sugar with canola oil with an electric mixer on low speed until the mixture is smooth; add 3 eggs one at a time, and beat again to combine. Beat in zucchini and vanilla until well combined. Beat the flour mixture into the sugar mixture by fourths, alternating with 1/4 cup of buttermilk after every portion of flour mixture. Mix the batter for 1 minute on medium-high speed, then pour the batter into the prepared baking pan. Step 3: In a bowl, mix together the cream cheese and 1/4 cup of sugar until thoroughly combined, then mix in 1 egg until the cream cheese mixture is smooth. Spoon dollops of the cream cheese here and there over the cake batter; swirl the cream cheese mixture through the batter with a table knife to make a marbled effect. Sprinkle the milk chocolate and semisweet chocolate chips over the cake.

Raspberry Loaf Cake Ingredients 1 tsp soft margarine, or as needed Cake Mix: 1 cup superfine sugar ¾ cup unsalted butter 3 large eggs ½ tsp vanilla extract 1 3/8 cups self-rising flour 1 ½ tsp baking powder Coulis: 5 ounces fresh raspberries 3/8 cup confectioners’ sugar 3 drops lemon juice, or to taste DirectionsStep1:

Step 3: Whisk eggs and vanilla extract together in a separate bowl until just mixed; do not over-whisk. Beat gradually into the butter mixture until well incorporated. Sift in flour and baking powder, bit by bit, folding after each addition. Set batter aside.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease an 8x4-inch loaf tin with soft margarine and set aside.

Step 4: Puree raspberries, confectioners’ sugar, and lemon juice in a food processor until smooth. Strain through a finemesh sieve into a bowl. Separate half the cake mix into a different bowl and stir the coulis through.

Step 5: Put alternating dollops of the raspberry and vanilla batter into the prepared loaf tin using a small ice cream scoop. Swirl both sets of dollops together slightly using the blunt end of a skewer.

Step 6: Bake in the preheated oven until the top of the cake is golden brown and risen and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 40 minutes. Let cool in the tin for 5 to 10 minutes. Run a table knife around the edges of the tin and remove the cake, leaving to cool completely on a wire rack.

Step 2: Cream superfine sugar and butter together with a paddle attachment of a free-standing electric mixer on medium-high speed until light and fluffy.

Step 5: Remove from heat. Stir in reserved mushrooms and their liquid, butter, chives, and Parmesan cheese. with salt and pepper and serve immediately.

Step 4: Pour in wine, stirring constantly until wine is fully absorbed. Add 1/2 cup warm broth to the rice; stir until the broth is absorbed. Continue adding broth, 1/2 cup at a time, stirring constantly, until the liquid is absorbed and the rice is tender, yet firm to the bite, about 15 to 20 minutes.

After a scenic drive past numerous farms in Willis, the Postcards team arrived at the Goodgrass Farm Dairy and Creamery, where husband and wife John and Camille Bock produce items like raw milk and cheeses on location with the help of their small staff.

The dairy is license inspected in the Montgomery, Walker, San Jacinto, and Grimes County area, making it possible to sell raw milk, cultured butter, cheese from fresh and raw milk, pasture pork in season, and additional items.

John Bock came out of retirement and built Goodgrass Farms without a background in dairy; however, he had previously milked cows and raised cows and lambs during the 39 years he has lived in Willis with Camille. The couple has about 100 acres of land that they own and manage. Approximately seventy-five acres is used for young calves, and twenty-five acres is used for pasture. In addition to the dairy farm, they have a joint venture selling pigs, piglets, and pork because Camille states, “You can’t have a dairy without raising pigs.” Across the street from the dairy, they make their own hay as well, which is free of pesticides and herbicides.

The history behind Goodgrass Farm

The milking process

The milk comes from their eleven cows milked on location. They are raised on pasture and milked once a day, every day. Milking starts at 8:30 AM, changing to 7:30 AM during the summer to adjust for the brutal heat that is a Texas summer. Goodgrass Farm is a seasonal operation that halts from November until January to allow for calving and recovery of the cows. When the farm is in operation, customers can come to the shop Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM where the products are on Eachdisplay.cow on the property has to be trained for milking, because a rambunctious animal is dangerous for everyone. animals deemed too dangerous get sold. When it comes time for milking, the cows are milked one at a time, once a day, and are given inspections by those milking to make sure the teats aren’t infected. To make sure everything is sanitary, the teats are coated with iodine before and after milking; they do this to make sure no bacteria gets into the milk. If, however, there is something wrong with the milk, the milk gets thrown out. If a cow isn’t milked regularly, the teats will dry up.

Goodgrass Farm starts milking their cows when they reach two years of age and continues for several years. If they wean a calf and their teats are still good, a cow will continue milking. The environment at the farm is stress-free for the cows and for the workers, especially since their process involves having the cows milked one at a time.

The cows start the day in a holding pen, waiting their turn like they are waiting for a ride at a carnival. When they get up to the milking platform, they snack on some grain feed during the milking, then step down, where another barrel of feed awaits them. After they finish the second grain feeding, they walk through a cow scale into the pasture for the day. If there is a heifer being trained for milking, they do the entire process, except they are not actually milked.

Cows find stepping down from the milking platform more difficult than getting up—Camille calls this “The Step of Death.” This comes from a cow’s weight distribution and bone structure, as their necks are not mobile enough for them to see straight ahead. With the help of the workers, the cows at Goodgrass Farm are able to successfully

The cheese-making process

Cheese offered at Goodgrass Farm can be fresh cheese or aged raw milk hard cheese. The cheesemaking process takes six hours from start to finish—the longest of any products at the farm. Cheese is pasteurized, meaning it has been heated at about 145-161 degrees Fahrenheit. When the cheeses are finished, it takes at least sixty days before the raw milk cheese is ready to sell.

Camille states, “This market showcases neighbors and local producers who do great things…such as raising beef, pork, lamb, poultry, rabbit, wine, and honey.” Offerings include jams, jellies, fruits, vegetables, and a spinning demonstration; jellies, jams, olive oil, and honey can also be found at the Goodgrass Farm store with the dairy products. The event can be found on the Goodgrass Farm website, where people can RSVP. During the producer’s market, people park on the street outside the property. People are able to tour the farm in groups of four. Arriving in the morning offers people the chance to see the milking process and to avoid the heat of the day.

Touring guests can observe the milking process, but may not physically milk a cow. They may get the chance to pet a cow if they come close. Children age four and up are permitted to tour if accompanied by an adult. If there is an interest in touring Goodgrass Farm, you can submit a message on their website. When visiting, guests might also meet Ragner, John and Camille Bock’s dog. Ragner is a Swedish Vallhund—a cow herding breed—that looks like a husky and corgi mix. Ragner’s short legs help him come behind the cows to nip at them, to herd. Being short helps ensure that, when the cows kick, he won’t get hurt. When people look at the cows, they might notice a thin appearance. While some might think all cows are supposed to be big and fat like a beef cow, Camille mentions that milking cows are supposed to look thin. A simple explanation comes from what the different cows produce—meat versus milk. With the energy it takes a milking cow to produce milk every day, they are able to convert feed production into milk, while a beef cow converts their feed production into fat.

There are roughly 60 million cats and 75 million dogs in the United States. A study about household pets revealed ¼ of residents were cat owners and 1/3 were dog owners; however, veterinarian practices see dogs 4 times more than cats. Ever wondered why? Most times when someone gets a cat or a kitten, it’s either free or is found. And when taken in to get vetted and neutered, there is little conversation about long-term preventative healthcare and the importance of regular veterinary checkups. This is where the CATalyst Council has embraced the challenge. Their goal is to get more cats adopted, educate cat owners, and provide more lifetime healthcare for cat patients by encouraging vets to engage with cat owners. It is a global program designed to increase feline care by reducing stress for the cat, the owner, and the veterinary practice.

When incidents of this sort happen, take the opportunity to help big brother understand the baby’s limits. For example: “I know you want to teach your brother to play catch, but you can’t teach a baby to catch by throwing things at him.” Then, help him learn ways of playing that won’t involve risk of pain to the baby, as in, “Roll the ball instead of throwing it.” You also need to praise him for his attempts to be such a good big brother, however awkward they may be at times.

When a 5-year-old boy and a 14-month-old boy interact on a daily basis, the younger one is bound to experience occasional pain. This is the almost inevitable consequence of having two boys, and you are going to go slowly insane if you assign yourself to the impossible task of preventing this from happening.

For at least the next three to four years, until the physical disparity begins to level out, the younger one will experience more play-related insult than the older one. In and of itself, this isn’t bad. It’s just the way it is.

A: I think you may be jumping to unwarranted conclusions.

If I’m trying to stay within the speed limit, but I fail to see a “Reduce Speed Ahead” sign and I’m ticketed for speeding, I’m not going to be remorseful. I’m going to be upset (albeit careful not to let the officer know). After all, it was not my intention to speed. On the other hand, if I’m intentionally speeding, trying to shave time off a trip, and I’m pulled over, I’m going to accept the ticket, apologize to the officer, and be a better citizen in the future. I have a strong feeling that your older son is being “ticketed” for unintentionally exceeding his younger brother’s “speed limit.” Under the circumstances, I’d fully expect him to be more upset than remorseful. He’s being punished for being, at worst, clumsy.

You may be misinterpreting big brother’s reaction to being punished for the incidents. You think he lacks remorse. I think he’s justifiably upset at having been punished for something he didn’t intend to do.

Q: Our 5-year-old son enjoys playing with his 14-month-old brother, but there have been three times recently when the baby has started crying and big brother has a guilty look on his face. So far, the baby has suffered a scratch under one eye, a red mark on his face where a ball hit him, and a bruised forehead from falling over. When big brother is banished to his room for these incidents, he is more upset about being punished than about hurting his brother. His lack of remorse bothers us. As a result, we’ve put baby brother off limits for a time. Are we expecting too much?

Danita can be found at Generations Salon, 2804 Lake Road in Huntsville. Generations Salon was opened in April 2015 by Lisa Shaw, Danita’s former coworker and friend. Danita joined the salon in September 2020 (shortly after the COVID pandemic started), where her friend and former coworker Bertha Taylor had been working since 2016. While she did not work at the JCPenney Salon with Danita and her friends, beautician Donna Rogers has also set up shop at Generations Salon. Danita offers a wide range of services and specializes in perms.

From school bus driver, landscaper, and cake decorator to highly sought-after beautician, Danita Reed of Madisonville has used her artistic and creative abilities to create a career which she loves.

“I have a 94-year-old customer who is just a pleasure,” recalled Danita. “At JCPenney, we had a customer who lived to be 106 and was still driving at 99 years old. She would tell stories about when people used horse and carriages to get around in Huntsville.”

Over the years, Reed acquired a client base that has followed her to Generations Salon and has remained loyal through the years.

“For instance, I still have my very first client, Robbie Smith, from when I worked at JCPenney,” recalls Danita. “She was six years old, and now I still do her hair, as well as her kids’ hair. I have customers who have been with me for 25 years.” According to Danita, her clients come from as far away as New York, the Houston area, Wells, Midway, Bryan, Iola, and more. When asked why clients stay with her for long periods and even generations, regardless of their geographical location, Danita humbly says she is a down-to-earth person, and she is honest with her clients.

Originally from the Houston area, Danita moved to the Centerville area in the late 80s. She later made her way to Madisonville. She drove a school bus for a while, along with making and decorating cakes. One day her best friend suggested they attend beauty school together. So, the two enrolled in Sebring Career Schools, LLC in Huntsville, and as they say – the rest is history.

Danita not only made lifelong clients and friends while working at the JCPenney salon, she also found her beautician work can allow her to be a witness for her strong Christian faith. “Once they are in the chair, I have a captive audience…and if we want to talk about God, scripture, or just pray together, we can,” said Danita. “I have certain clients who know they can come to me when they have trouble. Everyone at Generations Salon is a Christian.”

Jacob has been recognized by multiple organizations for his accomplishments. He has also served Walker County and Huntsville on various boards and committees, most recently, as Best of Readers’ Choice Awards for Best Attorney and Best Law Firm in Walker County for 2022. Jacob and his wife, Aubree, have four daughters. When he is not working or volunteering, he is spending family time with Aubree while shuffling kids and watching the girls in all of their extracurricular activities.

Patton was a respected and beloved fixture in the Huntsville and Walker County area, serving over 32 years as County Clerk and 27 years as Chairman of the Walker County Historical Commission. James, like many in his family before him, loved people and loved public service. His grandfather, Nathaniel Albright Patton, was a member of the Texas Legislature, County Judge, State Senator, and United States Congressman; James’ father, Weldon Taylor Patton, served as County Judge; and his uncle, Nat Patton, Jr., was County Attorney in Houston County for 30 years. We fondly referred to him as “Cousin James,” not because of any known kinship, but because we jokingly asserted that he knew enough about local history to “connect everyone’s dots.” His joyful attitude, kindness, friendship, and treasure trove of knowledge was greatly appreciated and will be greatly missed.

5 What’s your fondest memory of your grandparents? My fondest memory of my grandfather was sitting outside with him while he was smoking in his pipe. Anytime I smell someone smoking a pipe it just makes me smile.

I pray that Olivia knows that she is the light of my life, and that there is no obstacle she can’t overcome as long as she puts God first in everything she does.

Most have heard the story of the prodigal son, told by Jesus to illustrate the depths of God’s love for us. Told from the father’s point of view, it is a story of grace and forgiveness. It is a story that promises a “welcome home” celebration for repentant sinners, even the worst among us. What if the story were told from the perspective of the prodigal, however? For those who think you can’t relate, let’s compare his journey to summer vacation. When we head out, all we can think about is our imagined destination. Depending on where we’re going, it may be the cool island breezes, the quaint stores and restaurants, or the bright city lights calling out to us. What we don’t think about are traffic jams, long lines at the airport or the amusement park, and strange tastes and smells. We wonder how the locals manage to drive up and down steep mountain roads that don’t seem wide enough for two-way travel. We find ourselves frustrated when there is no air conditioning, the stores close early, and the cab drivers don’t speak English. Perhaps it’s raining at the beach, or the nearby forests are on fire. Suddenly, in the middle of our dream vacation, we begin to sound like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. “There’s no place like home,” we realize. In many ways, we are all like the prodigal. If we knew all the obstacles we would face in life, we might not ever take a step forward! As youths, we step out of the comfort of our parents’ homes and are excited to take on the world. Just like we do on summer vacations, we know there will be the unexpected things we don’t like, but we don’t want to hear it. We just go. But somewhere along the way, we get tired…and the very place we longed to leave – home – is the one place we really want to be.
