5 TIPS FOR BREASTFEEDING // #HOBOKEN

5 Tips for Successful Breastfeeding Cristina Toff, CLEC

W

e mothers are hard-wired to breastfeed, but that doesn’t always mean it comes easily or without challenges. As co-founders of milksource, an online and in-person breastfeeding education service, we’re sharing our top 5 tips for breastfeeding success below so that you can feel empowered and confident to begin your breastfeeding and motherhood journey. Prepare prenatally. This is probably the most important thing you can do to prepare to breastfeed before entering the hospital. We started themilksource. com because research indicates that prenatal breastfeeding education is a top predictor of breastfeeding success along with our intention to breastfeed. As mammals, we may be biologically built to breastfeed but the reality is most of us have no idea what breastfeeding entails

{8}

until baby is here and we’re hormonal, exhausted and overwhelmed attempting to latch them on. Breastfeeding education will help you set realistic expectations of what breastfeeding in those early days may look like, provide you with information on how to achieve an effective latch and adjust positioning for comfort, ensure you have some basic troubleshooting tools, allow you to identify and solve issues before they become serious problems, and empower you to feel confident in your breastfeeding journey. Make it part of your birth plan. Labor and delivery come in all different shapes and sizes and is often times unpredictable; babies come on their own time and sometimes our plans change. So with all the

unpredictability, why is a birth plan important? A birth plan allows you to think through medical decisions you may be faced with and decide what is or isn’t important to you. A birth plan also gives you the opportunity to prepare for this major transition in your life without being overwhelmed by stress, hormones or pain and communicate your desires to your support team. While you’re making decisions about the type of birth you’d like to have and all of the medical decisions you’ll need to make, think about working your thoughts on breastfeeding into your plan. Share your goals with whomever is helping to deliver your baby so that they can make the right decisions to protect your choices. We firmly believe every woman should have the choice of how her labor and delivery goes. We also believe there is a lot of misinformation out there

about how birthing works, and how birth affects breastfeeding often goes undiscussed. Interventions such as IV fluids, epidurals and inductions can result in some early breastfeeding challenges as your body processes out the extra fluids and as baby processes out any medications from labor which may make them especially sleepy or uninterested in latching on. Does that mean that they’ll prevent you from breastfeeding? Absolutely not. However, it is important to understand how your birth choices may impact the start of your breastfeeding journey and how to take steps that will help you overcome any obstacles that come your way. Nurse early and often. Some hospitals are beginning to offer immediate skin-toskin and the ‘golden hour’ as protocol but all birthing women should advocate for it. Practicing skin-to-skin immediately after

baby is born and having uninterrupted time for baby and you to bond and get acclimated with breastfeeding right away will help you get off to a strong start with breastfeeding. We recommend roomingin following birth, so that you can begin right away to learn baby’s early hunger cues and allow baby to suckle and nurse as frequently as it needs. Reminder: babies aren’t born hungry but they are born with an important need to suck, which rids their bowels of meconium and helps prevent jaundice from becoming an issue. Seek help before you need it. We may be hard-wired to breastfeed, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t come without challenges. Prepare as much as you can before baby arrives, but understand that sometimes things just don’t go according to plan. You may do everything correctly and still find yourself in a challenging place. Know that 1. with breastfeeding, there is always a solution and 2. the earlier you can find and accept help, the easier getting back on track will be. If you’re giving birth in a hospital, we recommend having the on-staff IBCLC come to your room to evaluate a feed, answer any questions and make sure baby can latch on properly. We also highly recommend having the contact information for a local IBCLC on hand for after you give birth many are covered by health insurance. This way, you can be sure that someone

{10}

will be there to help you in the event you come across some challenges - remember, help is good even if it is simply to calm our anxieties. Form a trusted support system. Some of the most important support systems we’ve found are the ones that we don’t realize are at our disposal before we give birth. Find a local La Leche League chapter or breastfeeding support group and attend meetings prenatally. You’ll be surprised (and really thankful) that you got first-hand insight on breastfeeding challenges and triumphs before baby arrives. Continuing to attend these meetings after baby is here will also allow you to connect with moms who understand all the highs and lows of new parenthood. Lastly, don’t forget your support system should not be limited to other moms support comes in many forms from your partner, your family, your friends and for working moms, your employer. Before baby arrives have an open conversation with your employer about your intentions to pump at work when you return to set expectations, review your options and learn about what returning to work will look like for you as a pumping mom. Meet Your

NEIGHBORS! the

Fillippi family Introduce us to the family… Hi! I’m Talia Starr Filippelli and I’m the founder and Chief Happiness Officer at Starr Therapy, a private mental health practice in Hoboken. My husband Mike and I met in 2004 while we were in college at Penn State. Mike is from Pittsburgh and I grew up in New Jersey so it took a little while to get us both in the same place. I took a pretty linear route in my career and went straight from Penn State to Columbia University for my Masters in Clinical Social Work. He ended up working in finance in Manhattan after graduation, then Baltimore, back to NYC, and finally New Jersey. Two years ago he took an opportunity for a career change and left the hedge fund he was at for 8 years and became a Realtor for Coldwell Banker in Tenafly. After a fast 14 years together, we’re now living in the ‘burbs with our two sons, Adrian (4) and Julian (9 months). On weekends, you can find us cooking together at home, snow-

{14}

boarding in Windham in the winters, and getting outdoors with the kids as much as possible in the nice weather. Julian just started crawling so he’s on the move and trying desperately to play with his big brother while Adrian strategically places all his toys just out of reach (he’s still getting used to that whole sharing thing!) I’ve called Hoboken my “business home” for almost 7 years. After working in the non-profit sector, inpatient mental health, outpatient clinics, and three other private practices, I was finally ready to open my own. Starr Therapy opened its doors in 2011 with a ballsy mission - make therapy something to brag about. I was frustrated with the secrecy and shame surrounding mental health and envisioned a totally different environment that would make clients feel proud they were doing such a healthy thing for themselves. It just didn’t make sense to me that an invisible barrier (stigma) could get in the way of people pursuing a

// for advertising information email: ladysavanthoboken@gmail.com

service that could make them happier and more successful in life. So I started offering solution-focused therapy (CBT) and clients loved the action-oriented sessions that empowered them to take control of their lives. I quickly realized how many of my clients were not only struggling with their emotions, but also with diet and exercise too. As a lifelong athlete, I understood the connection between emotional, physical and nutritional health so in 2013 I got my health coaching and personal training certifications as well. This background has been especially useful in my work with new moms adjusting to life with kids! And as a mom with young kids myself, it has been so rewarding to help couples going through the growing pains (and joys!) of having children. Since opening, we’ve grown and hired a team of amazing therapists who work with children, teens, adults and couples and we are proud to continue spreading our mission to be happy on purpose everyday.

Tell us about your favorite neighborhood activities. I’m such a foodie so anything food-oriented like checking out new restaurants and local food festivals is my favorite! Favorite local restaurant? HoneyGrow. What do you find the most unique about living in this community? Hoboken has a unique essence to it in that it feels urban and small-town at the same time. I think that’s why everyone loves it! Be Happy on Purpose,

When did you move to Hoboken? I actually live in Bergen County, but Hoboken has been like a second home to me since I opened Starr Therapy in September 2011. I started in a shared space on 8th street and moved to my current location on Washington Street in 2012. I’ve never actually lived in the Mile Square but fell in love it with as my business home over the past 7 years. Hoboken has such a community-oriented spirit that makes working here an absolute pleasure. What is your favorite neighborhood walk? Once the weather breaks, my favorite thing to do is “walk-and-talk” sessions along the riverfront. The sunlight, fresh air, and incomparable view of NYC and the Hudson River create an amazing backdrop for therapy sessions. continue on page 27

ristina and Jason found themselves moving to Hoboken, kind of on a whim, almost 3 years ago. Cristina was 6 months pregnant with their son, Noam, and they had decided it was time to escape the hustle and bustle of the East Village for somewhere a little quieter (with much more space). Cristina, Jason, Noam (now almost 3) and their two dogs, Riley and Millie, call downtown Hoboken home, and will be welcoming a second baby boy into their family in October.

Cristina is a lactation counselor and educator and is working toward becoming an IBCLC. She is a local La Leche League Leader, is a trained doula working toward certification, and is working toward several other certifications focused on maternal and infant health. She also blogs all things motherhood at thehomeandtheheart.com. Jason is a Partner at Google’s internal incubator, Area 120. He’s been at Google for nearly 10 years, though he took a short break to work at Twitter for a couple of years. How did you decide to call Hoboken home? When we found out that I was pregnant, we knew it was time to consider living somewhere other than our East Village duplex. We considered Brooklyn, because we were familiar with it, but ultimately decided on Hoboken (after just one brief visit) for a variety of reasons including how family-friendly it was, how awesome Jason’s commute would be (he works in

{} 16

Chelsea), and how much closer it would be to Pennsylvania (where we both grew up and where our families still live).

We knew we wanted to purchase in Hoboken so we began renting a house while we house-hunted. Fortunately, we were able to find a house that was perfect for us and purchased it a few months later. Then, we spent about 9 months gut renovating it before moving in. We’ve now been living in our home for a little over a year and couldn’t love it more. What’s your favorite part about Hoboken? We love that we can get the best of both worlds here. We’ve got access to everything we want - most within walking distance - and live a pedestrian lifestyle, but we feel like we live in a small community where neighbors know each other and there’s a sense of calm and quiet. And, if we ever get tired of the calm and quiet, New York is just a short train ride away. Where are you when you’re not in Hoboken? Having both grown up in the suburbs, we love the space and calm the suburban lifestyle provides. Since we consider Hoboken (small) city-living, it’s important to us to spend time in the ‘country’ whenever we can. We recently purchased a lakehouse and plan to go there regularly once our renovations are finished. We also regularly go back to Pennsylvania to visit our families. We love that we can give Noam all that Hoboken and New York City has to offer continue on page 27

eet the Kwok family, Linda, Arthur, Sofia (8) and Dylan (6). We moved to Hoboken in 2008 after a short two years stint in the suburbs. It was supposed to be a pit stop to get back to urban life until we figure out our next move. Before you know it, ten years and two kids later, we are still here and love it! Arthur and Linda both grew up in big cities, Arthur in Hong Kong and Linda in Shanghai then San Francisco. We were transplanted to New York for graduate school and then work and met in the city. We love the energy, diversity, vibrancy and convenience of big cities. Hoboken has all that and a small town feel where everybody knows your name. Walking down Washington Street or going to the park, our kids bump into their friends and always have friends to play with. We are also pleasantly surprised with the public school program here for the kids. We never thought we would attend public schools here looking at just test scores. We both take education seriously coming from very competitive programs in Asia and having both gone to good college and graduate schools in the US. But we feel our kids are getting a great cutting edge education at school and also have the luxury of being in a diverse town having exposure to all kinds of families with different backgrounds. On the weekends, we can take kids to the Met, MOMA or Broadway just a short Path ride away and expose them too all that. The schools have a lot of resources and focus on social emotional development besides individual academic attention. Our kids

have thrived not only academically but are developing into kind, cooperative, social and productive citizens. We enjoy biking as a family up River Road to Edgewater or down Sinatra to Newport Greens. The riverfront view of Manhattan is just unparalleled by any other town in New Jersey. In the ten years we have been here, Hoboken has changed a lot. Having lived through Sandy, and a week without electricity afterwards, we were happy to see the town actively manage the flood situation. We lived through the installation of a second pump right in our neighborhood and months of construction, but are happy to see the whole town benefit from the results. We are both big foodies and now we don’t even go to the city that much. There are many interesting restaurants in Hoboken. We were happy to see the opening of a family friendly Pilsner Haus. Antique Bar Bakery and Barbes are a couple newcomers we love to visit. We know we can always count on stables like Anthony David’s, Bin 14, Zafra’s and Amanda’s and are very happy to see another Choc O Pain location uptown. We enjoy neighborhood hangouts like Bwe cafe where you always bump into friends. Keming has the most authentic Sichuan cuisine we have found in the whole tri-state area. hen my husband Mike and I met, we were living two very different lives in different cities. He was enjoying his work and busy life in Manhattan and I was thriving as a teacher in Richmond, Virginia. But some very persistent (and smart) friends knew we would hit it off, so they set us up to meet during a long weekend on the Chesapeake River in July 2005. Two years later, we were married and I was quitting my job, selling my house and moving into a studio apartment with him in NYC, where I went back to school full time to get my Masters in Literacy Education at NYU. He continued to work long hours in Manhattan as Partner at an accounting firm, and I soon realized I needed more space and a quieter neighborhood than Midtown East. So we began the search for our home in 2008. He planned to take me to three neighborhoods with the prerequisite quick commute to his office. First up was Upper West Side, where we quickly realized we wouldn’t gain much within our budget. Second was this small city across the river in NJ (gasp!) called Hoboken that he frequented for late night concerts in his single days. We drove my old car through the Lincoln Tunnel and met a realtor who showed us a dozen properties, and by lunchtime, I knew that Hoboken would be where we would land to start a family. There was something about the city that felt like small town America: the people, the shops and restaurants, and Brownstone homes! I

{18}

told him at dinner that night to forget the third neighborhood across that “other” river. THIS was our home. Reluctantly, he gave up on his ideas of living in one of those trendy Brooklyn neighborhoods and we bought a Brownstone in uptown Hoboken. We now have two energetic boys, Max (8) and Jacob (5). Max attends All Saints Episcopal Day School as a second grader and Jacob is a Kindergartner at Brandt. I often tell people that Hoboken is the BEST place to raise a family. When Max was born in Fall 2009, I threw myself into being a stay-athome mom and was determined to prevent the post partum blues by visiting the weekly New Moms Group at Hoboken Hospital. The friends I made in that support group when he was just a few weeks old are some of my closest and dearest friends I’ve had in my lifetime. If I was feeling lonely and isolated in the house during those early months, all I had to do was walk the block and I’d see multiple faces I recognized! Those walks would turn into impromptu lunch dates, Mommy/Baby play dates, Mommy Happy Hours and eventually couples date nights with our spouses. Although much of my core “new mommy” group has moved to the suburbs or across the globe, we still keep in touch; asking each other for parenting advice via our original private Facebook group and even seeing each other for girls’ weekends or family get-togethers every year. Where else does that happen??

an you tell us about yourselves? After living in countless states across America, Catherine decided she had found her forever home while living in Hawaii. As the rainbow-filled days turned to months, I did begin to learn to surf, but noticed my bank account was dwindling with few job prospects in sight. After hearing about a job in Connecticut, I applied and was on a plane a month later to begin a new life on the East Coast. Within a month of arriving, I met my husband Christian and since then, 18 years have somehow passed. Christian was born and raised in Manhattan and his family still resides on the Upper West Side in thesame apartment he grew up in. To balance out his city upbringing, his parents brought him to Vermont every summer. In the country, he gained an appreciation for small town living, nature, and the Red Sox. Ultimately, Christian found a career in finance in Manhattan and decided to build a life in the city he grew up in. How did you decide to move to Hoboken? We lived together in Manhattan for many years, but I discovered Hoboken nine years ago and immediately felt at home. For days I talked to my Manhattan native husband and tried to convince him to move to New

Jersey. “And be part of the bus and tunnel crowd? No thanks!” he replied. Manhattan seemed like the center of the universe; why would we leave? In the end, we both saw that Hoboken was a town like no other and began to build a life here. In this town, we bought our very first home, gave birth to two precious daughters, and enjoyed progressing in our careers. In Hoboken, we have found the best contractors (LA Design and Construction), the most wonderful local handyman (Jeff at 201-912-7517), along with numerous favorite restaurants and parks. We have stayed longer than we ever planned as we’ve learned to appreciate how nice it is to live in a place with all the amenities of a city but with the joys of small town life.

At times, Hoboken has been like a best friend, a companion that enabled us to create unforgettable memories, a place we have come to trust. It’s been like a parent, taking care of us. It’s been the boss of our lives as it’s dictated decisions on our behalf, such as living in an apartment. We probably won’t be here forever and that’s hard to admit, but this will always have a big piece of our hearts. Hoboken has been many things for us. We know that it will forever be a part of us.

WeeBabe When expecting parents come into Wee Babe and ask…….”What is really mandatory that we have at home before we go into labor?” Our answer: “You need the following 3 items: breast pump, infant car seat and stroller.” Wee feel it is important to cover the basics but then we like to end with the fun! For the breast pump, please reach out to your insurance company and make sure the pump arrives before you deliver. Infant car eat, while there are many good, safe options on the market our top seller 3 years running is the Nuna Pipa. Nuna has recently introduced lighter versions but we sill prefer the basic Pipa for local families since not only does it have a high safety rating, a dream drape to protect baby’s eyes from the sun, and the additional safety feature of a load leg but it also has a great European install which means it can be used in taxi’s, uber’s, and grandparent’s cars without the base. Stroller, well in this town there are a myriad of good options and it really depends on your life style but make sure it is newborn compatible or comes with a bassinet option. Hoboken favorites are, in alphabetical order: Bugaboo Bee, Cameleon and Donkey Nuna Mixx2

Silver Cross Wave Uppa Baby Cruz and Vista While having the above is necessary, to make it fun and convenient around town, the stroller must have all the necessary bling! Every stroller need a stroller organizer, wee love the ones from Skip Hop and Uppa Baby. Stroller Hooks - the hooks from Think King, do not slide around and can carry almost all you need. Winter bunting - only way to make it through the colder months. 7am Enfant igloo or 212 is our favorite universal option while for the Uppa Baby and Bugaboo strollers we do like the branded versions, but always go for the warmest options, ask us in store and we will be sure to outfit you with the best option for your needs. And let’s not forget about the adults in the winter, hand muffs by 7am make every winter stroll more tolerable. To keep baby entertained while out and about we like to add the Wimmer-Ferguson Infant Stim mobile to the stroller canopy and a boli ball attached to the stroller with a Lil’ Sidekick for them to grab and throw but not lose. With all of the above you will be prepared for when the baby comes home and outfitted for the many, many, many daily strolls around town.

while still giving him the space and freedom to run around in the backyard and the room to breathe fresh country air. Do you think you’ll stay in Hoboken? We’re honestly not sure, but we love it for the foreseeable future. Noam’s attending Kaplan preschool, and we absolutely love it, so we’re very happy with the schooling so far. We also love the community we’ve built in our short time here. Hoboken seems to be a town where a lot of people live for a shorter period of time, but we’ve met some great friends and

hope we can all stay and grow with each other and watch our children grow together. The community of moms in Hoboken has become especially important to me. The more involved I become in helping the women of Hoboken through pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum and breastfeeding, the more ingrained Hoboken becomes in me. I love being able to help our community grow and learn and flourish, and I believe that that starts with mothers and babies and the beginnings of families.

night there. Linda took tons of classes at ICE in the city. Hudson Table has a much more intimate and community feel and the food is amazing too! Pier 13 just can’t be beat in the summer. We are also happy to see growth in the cultural scene with the new Mile Square Theater space and have become avid supporters and members there. The quality of the shows are amazing! Even a better deal is the theater production at the High School. We have seen some phenomenal productions there from Peter Pan to Spring Awakening. Another welcome addition is Gravity Vault where our kids love going, getting their energy out and conquering challenges. We love the community feel here and how our efforts can make a difference. Linda helped to launch the Hoboken Public Education Foundation after our second started in the PreK program. Hundreds of thousands have been raised from passionate supporters in the community and have improved public schools in facilities, professional development and innovative programs just to name a few. The foundation funded a Trout in the Classroom program this year. The highlight of our daughter Sofia’s week is being the Trout Ambassador and feeding

the trouts in on Thursdays. We cannot wait for them to grow and to release them into the Hudson river later in the year. Sofia also participates in various after school programs like coding, creative sparks, golf and comic book drawing. Dylan likes coding as well and absolutely loved the zoology program where he got to meet a real zoologist who showed them tarantulas and snakes! Now that the kids are older, Linda has focused her career on financial literacy and making money matters more accessible to everyday people. She gave a talk to Hoboken High School students about student loans and shared her knowledge in consumer finance and discussed the pitfalls to avoid but also how to make student loan work to their advantage. She’s working for a startup technology company that plays in the pre-tax benefits space. If you like to learn how you can give your employees a $1 per hour raise, with minimal work flow and no cost to your company, please find her on Facebook or LinkedIn. We love Hoboken and are proud to call it home. Whenever we travel, our kids are eager to tell people we are from Hoboken, New Jersey!
