As tradition holds, Berlinale continues to spotlight Indian cinema, with over half a dozen noteworthy Indian filmmakers featured in this year’s selections. Among them are Raam Reddy’s The Fable, starring Manoj Bajpayee (ENCOUNTERS), P S Vinothraj’s Adamant Girl, and Sidhartha Jatla’s In the Belly of a Tiger (FORUM), alongside Gavati Wad’s O Seeker, Utkarsh’s Remote Occlusions, Sunil Sangzgiri’s Two Refusals (FORUM EXPANDED), Nishi Dugar’s Sour Candy, and Subarna Dash’s The Girl Who Lived in the Loo (GENERATION SHORT FILMS). Notably, talents formerly part of Berlinale Talents now shine on the festival stage, solidifying Berlinale’s status alongside the Toronto International Film Festival in championing Indian cinema annually. India maintains a strong presence at Berlinale/EFM, offering both mainstream and independent Indian filmmakers and producers a vital platform for showcasing their work and exploring co-production opportunities with global studios. This year saw over 30 Indian companies and 120 delegates in attendance, underscoring India’s growing engagement on the international cinematic scene.

With the latest announcement of upto $3.6 million in incentives, India is now one of the world’s largest incentive givers. Already, over half-a-dozen projects have received approval, with co-production activity notably on the rise. With 16 co-productions underway and support from states and streamlined business processes, the Indian film and audiovisual industry experiences a significant surge, particularly in post-production, animation, and VFX services. he 74th Berlin International Film Festival will award US-director, producer and screenwriter Martin Scorsese the Honorary Golden Bear for his lifetime

achievement. Killers of the Flower Moon, his latest film, is one of his greatest achievements. Following the end of the writers’ strike in Hollywood, the European Film Market (EFM) sees a surge in activity. The market remains robust and he upcoming 2024 edition shows promising signs of continued success, with sold-out exhibition spaces and increasing registration numbers.

The 21st Berlinale Co-Production Market presents 34 film projects from 27 countries seeking international partners for cofinancing and realization. Notably, 17 projects are directed by women. The selection encompasses diverse themes, including political conflicts and family dynamics, with a focus on fresh perspectives and emerging talent. The event facilitates over 1,500 oneon-one meetings among producers, world sales companies, and funding organizations. Over 360 films have emerged from past projects, including award-winning titles.

The program aims to showcase the work of Italian filmmakers from different perspectives and offer an opportunity to network with producers, distributors, investors and experts. The Italian film and media industry continues to have a strong presence at the EFM with over 1,000 accredited participants, 60 exhibiting companies, and nearly 80 films in market screenings this year. This will enable to showcase Italy’s rich and diverse production and distribution landscape to foster collaboration opportunities.

EFM Startups 2024 celebrates its 10th edition by spotlighting innovative startups in production, development, and distribution. During the four-day platform at the Berlinale, these startups showcase technological advancements, engage with industry leaders, and explore funding opportunities. Selected companies will pitch their ideas, participate in one-on-one meetings, and attend roundtable discussions, following thorough preparation sessions leading up to the event.

Books at Berlinale 2024 presents ten international books poised for screen adaptation. Hosted on February 18, the event showcases works tackling diverse themes from social issues to historical intrigue. Six publishers and four literary agencies have submitted the selections, reflecting global trends in literature and cinema.

One day, Dev discovers individual burnt trees in his orchard in the Indian Himalayas. Despite all efforts, larger and larger fires break out, eventually forcing Dev to realize the truth about himself and his family. Spring 1989. High up in the Indian Himalayas, where birds fly low to avoid getting lost in the clouds, Dev owns a sprawling estate with several orchards. The friendly and balanced man lives in a colonial-style house with his family. He spends a large part of his time building human-sized wings, which he puts on in the morning hours to take short sightseeing flights over the plantations. One day, while walking across the grounds, he discovers a single burnt apple tree. A short time later there were already several. Dev and his foreman monitor the workers on the plantations, which causes unrest. A group of nomads come under suspicion and a corrupt police officer gets involved, while a group of loyal men stand guard outside the property at night. Despite all measures, a large fire breaks out a week later and engulfs an entire mountainside full of trees. In his search for the culprit, Dev also resorts to armed violence. The slow burning of the plantations forces him to face the truth about himself and his family.

India introduces a ground breaking initiative to empower filmmakers: offering upto $3.6 mn in incentives for filming and service projects, with the goal of enhancing its position as a premier destination in the global film industry. It presents a great opportunity to participants at the Berlinale’s European Film Market to kick start their filming, co-production endeavours, or service engagements in India

n the sprawling landscape of the global film industry, India stands out as a beacon of diversity, culture, and cinematic heritage. With a history spanning over a century, the Indian film industry has not only contributed significantly to the world of cinema but has also continuously evolved, offering new opportunities and avenues for filmmakers worldwide. However, India’s allure in the global film industry is not just about its heritage anymore but also its evolving incentives for international filmmakers. With the recent announcement by the Film Facilitation Office (FFO) under the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, India has set a new benchmark in incentivizing foreign film production and service work.

The global film production and distribution market, valued at over US$77.2 billion, continues to witness remarkable growth year after year. The rise of Over-theTop (OTT) platforms has further fuelled this growth, with a staggering 599 English-language TV shows produced in 2022 alone, marking a 7% increase from the previous year. Amidst this dynamic landscape, India has emerged as a prominent player, witnessing a remarkable 56% increase in the number of foreign films shot within its borders over the previous fiscal year. Recovering from the shock of global pandemic, in 2022, India witnessed a cinematic resurgence with 1,623 movies released, marking a 9% increase from 2019 levels. Gross Box Office revenues

Key Features of Revised Incentives Increase in Incentive Percentage: A significant surge from 30% to upto 40% in incentives for foreign film production including bonus of 5% each for employing Indian crew and for Significant Indian Content Cap Limit Elevated cap limit of Rs. 300 Million(~$3.6 Mn) with an additional 5% bonus for projects featuring Significant Indian Content (SIC). t’s fascinating that India’s media and entertainment industry is valued at a staggering $26 billion. A significant portion of this revenue, about 80%, comes from television, digital media and print media. Television alone contributes about $9 billion, while digital media and online gaming contribute $10.3 billion collectively. Over the past two decades, while the world was busy building physical infrastructure, India was focusing on digital

advancements. This strategic focus has paid off, with India now boasting the cheapest data cost per GB globally, at just 13 cents, compared to the global average of $3.5. In some coutries, it might reach $6 to $10. So India drove innovation through both public and private sector initiatives, as well as a large number of network competitors. And we were able to keep our data cost low. This affordability has led to a remarkable surge in data

consumption, with Indians consuming about 20 GB per month on average, significantly higher than the global average of 12 GB. In fact, India alone accounts for 25% of global data consumption. Looking at the $26 billion revenue of the M&E industry, it’s a culmination of various sectors: television, digital media, online gaming, and print media, all contributing significantly to this staggering figure. However, what particularly excites me is the promising growth within the Animation and Visual Effects (VFX) sector. Today, the animation and visual effects (VFX) industry stands at a remarkable $3 billion. However, just two years ago, this industry was valued at a modest $1.5 billion. Witnessing its rapid growth to over $3 billion is truly remarkable. Looking ahead, the entire media and entertainment industry, currently valued at $26 billion, is projected to soar to $35 billion by 2025. Let’s do a quick calculation: in just three years, we’re witnessing a jump from $26 billion to $35 billion. Even with a conservative estimate of 10% growth, the potential is evident. And as we’ve heard from reports, several sub-industries are

During my tenure at Invest India over the past four and a half to five months, I’ve been focused on advancing AI accelerators, graphics technology, computing capabilities, and platforms to empower software development for gaming. The potential for growth is evident when you consider the vast number of software developers. Additionally, it’s essential to recognize our contributions to the global audio-video services market. We currently account for 2%

he more absurd or fantasy based situations in the movie, the higher is the box office collection. Most heroes are one dimensional and predictable while the action sequences are big and spectacular. Action heroes are killing machines that are dedicated to altering the future of a tormented set of human beings in the clasp of marauding monstrous villains. In these movies, the spectacular action sequences that unfold are utterly absorbing in the most amazing special effects. The plot hovers around intense vulnerability of the victims threatened by the persistent pursuit of ugly narcissism by the villians and the dogged commitment to altruism by the hero.

The Nature of Heroism In Action Movies These action movies promote heroism based on expediency, the focus is on what promotes “excitement” and undercurrents of palpable tension on the imminent possibilities of physical annihilation that is “gory death”. Unless physical annihilation is at stake there is no “rising action” possible in this scheme of movie making. The main character is periodically infused with an adrenaline rush to “avenge” caused by intermittent experiences of tragic unbearable injustice or loss of loved ones. The character arc is different in the action movies. The hero does not transform in a classic character arc, the context and circumstances evolve and yield

irrefutable evidence of the determination, competence and the intelligence of the hero. This trend may be seen in Indian action movies like Jawan, Salaam, and Pushpa. As the movie gravitates to the end as a resolution of the burgeoning mayhem, the hero shines in all his glory in the display of the height of his courage “and the depth of his altruism. The very act of saving the victims at a high risk of losing one’s own life brings the attribution of self sacrifice. The “act of doing good even at the cost of risking one’s life” occupies the centre stage of attention. Above all the ‘hero’ in the action movie displays toughness and being in control. The hero does not allow ambiguities, uncertainties or weaknesses to mellow down his fiery resolve and offers a fantasy of control and power to the audience.

the real cinematic impact is generated through the infusion of technology and those techies who collaborate with the creatives from the scripting and the story boarding stage. Visuals with action sequences and dialogues go hand in hand. The editing team has to combine the images, dialogues and sound effects to create the ultimate content. The production design team attains prominence establishing the overall look of the film. Several concepts need to be drafted and vetted in total collaboration between the development and the production team. As action movies have an emphasis on action than on dialogues, the art direction team and the virtual cinematography team have a lot going to the culmination of content aligning the action intent. The art of creating an immersive experience is the fine art of blending camera and lighting work to create epic cinematic content. Decision on close up shots, camera angles to enhance the imagery and the look of the CG images evoke heightened audience attention.

Aadujeevitham Actor Prithviraj Sukumaran’s much-anticipated film, Aadujeevitham (The Goat Life), is all set to release in theatres on April 10, 2024, the film is produced by the banner Visual Romance. Directed by Blessy, the film is based on the novel Goat Days by Benyamin. One of the most popular best-sellers, the novel tells the story of a young man Najeeb, who in the early 90s migrates from the lush green shores of Kerala in search of fortunes in a land abroad, only to get stranded in the middle of the desert. An earlier released trailer of the film promised from a hard-hitting story with some extraordinary visuals and music. The film also features actors Jimmy Jean-Louis, Amala Paul, KR Gokul, Talib al Balushi and RikAby in pivotal roles.

Ajayante Randam Moshanam Ajayante Randam Moshanam, the period drama that stars Tovino Thomas in the lead role, is reportedly gearing up for a May release. The post-production works of the movie are progressing in full swing. Auron Mein Kahan dum Tha Directed by Neeraj Pandey, this film is touted as a unique musical love story. The narrative of the film will span across 20 years and will take place between 2002 and 2023. The film will be released in multiple languages. T he theatrical release date for Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha is April 26, 2024. The film will star Ajay Devgn and Tabu in the lead roles. It will also star Jimmy Shergill, Saiee Manjrekar, and Shantanu Maheshwari. Golden Globe-winning composer MM Keeravani will compose the original soundtrack. Barroz Mohanlal has announced that his much-anticipated 3D fantasy drama film Barroz will release in cinemas on March 28, 2024. eMeRGeNCY Kangana Ranaut’s directorial debut ‘Emergency’ focuses on one of the most controversial periods of post-Independence Indian history from 1975 to 1977 when then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a nationwide state of emergency. The first teaser promo for ‘Emergency’ was unveiled in June, offering a glimpse into the chaos and turmoil during the emergency era in India. The film is produced by by Zee Studios and Ranaut’s Manikarnika Films. Ranaut stars as Indira Gandhi and the cast also includes Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhary, Milind Soman, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair and the late Satish Kaushik. “Emergency” will release theatrically worldwide on June 14.

KANGuVA Kanguva is billed as one of the most expensive projects in Suriya’s career.Directed by Siva, Kanguva has Bollywood actor Disha Patani playing the female lead, marking her Tamil debut.
