1 : What defines Jungala Style of Festival ? Firstly thanks so much for this interview. I’ve been a fan of the magazine since Assaf aka Cortex sent me the link. Jungala Festival is the creation of my wife, Romy, and myself . We create the unique experience known as Jungala Festival. This festival’s style is psychedelic in all ways. We strive to bring the best, in our opinion, of the psychedelic scene locally and internationally. Every year we also want the production to grow, not only in attendance, but in infrastructure, design and layout. This year we went the biggest we have gone with stage design, lighting design, video mapping and the total infrastructure of the event. We were so glad that we are able to achieve our visions with this festival. This drives the passion more than anything. 2 : What drove you to choose for the Festival the name Jungala ? We started off our brand, PsynOpticz Productions, almost 10 years ago now. And in the first 5 years we did events in clubs. One of our first clubs we did it in was called Bang Bang Club in Cape Town, we did weekly events and each month was a different theme. We followed this with the flyer design as well as the décor design as well. One of our close friends, Rob Gonzo, came up with a name for one of the months, Jungala, we used that name in 2008 for a month and in 2010. We then decided that this would be an awesome name for the festival as its a fun, creative concept, catchy, clean and it works well with the psychedelic element of being in nature. In 2011 we held our first Jungala Festival. 3 : Tell us please about your label PsynOpticz and about the next releases ? I started DJing under the alias SwiTcHcaChe in 2003, and then in late 2004 I started PsynOpticz Productions, which first began just as

6

an events company and it has grown over the years to become an artist agency and more within the psychedelic scene. We do psychedelic events as well as sign artists locally and internationally that can represent us on a professional level. The artists release music with us through our record label, {psy.ology} records. The label is very new and has now 12 EPs released and another 8 EPs ready to be released over the next 4 months. There is a lot more on the cards. Our artists have the platform to release music through our label and also represent PsynOpticz Productions. 4 : Calvin, Any new special plans for the future or up-coming projects ? Well, we will be taking {psy.ology} records outdoor, as well as our annual ZONE festival. This year is PsynOpticz 10 year celebration and we will be doing our annual Frost-Bite indoor event this winter to celebrate that. Other than that, {psy.ology} has a lot of releases coming up and that is a big focus at the moment. 6 : Where does the spiritual journey play a part in connection to your labels & festival creations? For us, the spiritual journey is an essential part of the festival experience. We want peo-

ming together, celebrating music and a connection to each other. The sound of Jungala festival is created with a mixture of artists from all over the the world, covering all genres within the psychedelic scene. From chill out to progressive techno, progressive trance, full on trance, middle groove, twilight.. there something for all types people. We have created a sanctuary where you can escape reality for three days and two nights in our magical jungle. We want people to travel from near and far to celebrate the beauty of music, dancing and nature with us. ple to experience a connection to the music, nature and each other in a safe and accepting enviroment. We are lucky in that in this profession you can be creative and make your imagination come to life through the dĂŠcor and installation pieces.. we feel that allows people to engage their surrounding on another level. They feel comfortable, and free and with the power of psychedelic music, allows us to connect to the surrounding on a spiritual level. 5 : What is the meaning and essence that Jungala is trying to show/tell to your thousands of followers from all over the South Africa & The world ?

1.Can you tell us a little bit about your self & how you became involved in the Trance/Goa music scene ? I was a part of the free festival scene in the UK in the late 80’s,and joined a crazy psychedelic jamming band’Ozric Tentacles’,where I met Joie Hinton and Steve Everitt..I already had my own band going called ‘Wooden Baby’ and Joie and Steve became a part of that band and we changed the name to ‘Eat Static’..We were originally gonna do electronic world infused music in the style of Yello but at the first session together, Steve turned up with an Akai sampler and a floppy disc of Kraftwerk drum sounds.!A 4/4 beat started and the rest is history.. 2. What inspires you the most as a psy artist ? Everything inspires me...travelling,other music, synths, states of mind etc..i never start songs using kits from previous songs,i never load up the same synth/bass sounds...every single tune I do starts from a completely blank canvas... 3. What is your most psychedelic moment in your experience with this music culture ? Hmmm there have been many..prob two of the highlights were meeting Timothy Leary and spending a day with him at hgis house in Beverly Hills orbeing asked to play Albert Hoffmans 100th birthday party! 4. Do you have other side projects that you are currently working on ? Always have other things going on the side...keeps you inspired..My Dendron project is still happening which is Psy Breaks,Flexitones which is mutant lounge funk, and this year I start a new one with Greek producer’Martan Arts’ which is going in the more deep tribal acid house direction..so back to my roots in a way! 5. What destinations (countries) have had a positive impact on your music career? All of them.. the travelling bit is the side I most enjoy..i really love interacting with other cultures and hanging outwith all kinds of weird colourful characters!

6. Use one word to describe the overall essence of your sound. ‘’Static’ 7. Please share your favourite moments in psytrance clubs, festivals, parties, etc. with our readers. There have been so many! Gigging together with System 7 at last years Glastonbury was a highlight...my musical journey started with Steve Hillage so it was like completing a circle...i enjoy every party these days..the people get warmer and friendlier, probably hitting 25 years this year has upped it all..i seem to be getting very emotional in my old age! 8. What do you think the future holds for this specific genre of music. Well, I hope the boundaries of the genre come down more..it was a lot more fun when people were not obsessed with all sounding the same or what speed a tune is at! ‘Psy’ to me means taking people on journeys, to deliver music that is not predictable and boring..there’s nothing more fun than an audience who don’t know what the hell is coming next... 9. Are there spiritual connections linked to your tracks? how do they influence you while performing energetically ? The main spirituality probably relates to outer space and the possibilities of lives on other planets...this is a subject I have been obsessed with since I was a child...i live in an area of the UK with the highest amount of Neolithic ruins and stone age temples so this must have rubbed off on me too...I was visiting crop circles and UFO spotting when I was 11 years old...music itself is also very spiritual..it can soothe the mind or it can awaken the beast..i love both sides...the primal inner pulse is what fascinates me... 10. Please share any words or message(s) that you would like to share with Digital Oracle Magazine readers. Keep taking the medicine! Keep watching the skies!....and carry on eating static...

1.Can you tell us a little bit about your self & how you became involved in the Trance/Progressive music scene ? My name is Aviram Levy, I’m 25 years old from Israel. My first exposure to Trance music was when I was about 6 years old and my older brother gave me a cassette which had lots of old trance hits from various artists such as Astral Projection,Total Eclipse,Hallucinogen and many more. 2. What inspires you the most as an artist? The thing that inspires me most is seeing people enjoy my music. Good vibes and good feedback from people is what keeps me going . 3. What is your most psychedelic moment in your experience with this music culture ? With no doubt, the first time I heard hallucinogen live. It was at a beach party in Israel about 7 or 8 years ago. It was a fantastic show that I’ll never forget. 4. Do you have other side projects that you are currently working on ? Currently, I’m working only under the name Invaders From Mars. My current material is a different style of Progressive than what I used to do. Soon I’ll be releasing my new tracks with the label Human Technology. I also have Second Dimension. 5. What destinations (countries) have had a positive impact on your music career? I can say for sure that India has helped me a lot and opened my creativity and spirituality in every way possible. In a way, the trip to India made me more confident of myself and the goals I want to achieve with my music. 6. Use one word to describe the overall essence of your sound. Sharp (?) 7. Please share your favourite moments in psytrance clubs, festivals, parties, etc. with our readers. About a year ago I travelled to

16

India and played there under the name Second Dimension. I remember that in one of the parties, which was held at the top of a mountain in the forest of Pulga, there were very unique vibes, an incredible view and it seemed as if everyone was sharing this unique and special feeling. 8. What do you think the future holds for this specific genre of music. I think its too early to say because this style is still very new, but I get a lot of good feedback and I believe that the future will be awesome. 9. Are there spiritual connections linked to your tracks? how do they influence you while performing energetically ? Of course! First of all, the spiritual connection is part of what influences me, because if I don’t feel the good vibes, the spiritual connection and good feeling that fills me, then I won’t be able to do it. Also, every little sound effect, vocal, a melody and every part of my music is made to stimulate the body and mind energetically and spirituality and you can see it on the dance floor. 10. Please share any words or message(s) that you would like to share with Digital Oracle Magazine readers. Enjoy the creation and keep the Trance scene alive and kicking! thanks for your support
