INTRO Since the creation of man, we have sought out ways to create sustainable energy. From fire came burning wood, then coal and crude oil. Until quite recently Nuclear energy was touted as the next frontier in the energy

chain through its ability to deliver substantial amounts of energy with little emissions to the atmosphere.

Nuclear power plants have also been considered safer than coal plants because they emit less CO2. However, these advantages do not factor in two most important questions “What do we do with Nuclear waste?” and “What happens in the case of an emergency or Nuclear crisis?”

Back in history, the Coal versus Nuclear power argument titled towards

the Nuclear power because coal is a non-renewable resource with several uses – restricting it from energy demands could free up our limited supply of coal for other uses.

Long story short, the premise Nuclear power once had almost immediately vanished after the first major nuclear accident occurred in Chernobyl. Although fewer than 40 people died as a direct result of the accident – most firemen who unknowingly received huge doses of radiation.

There are little ways quantify the extent of damage done to the children,

women and men exposed to unsafe amounts of radiation days and weeks after the accident. Till today there has been a higher number of cancer

patients, malformed births, stillbirths, and dysfunctional growth amongst those men, women (pregnant or otherwise), children, who got the better of radiation exposure.

Much unlike in conventional accidents, the result of a nuclear accident is often the long-suffering of one exposed, not death or bodily injury. You may call it the “SILENT KILLER”, radioactive materials when exposed to

living tissue ionize surrounding tissue which leads to a number of unwanted effects including cancer and dysfunctional growth. For pregnant women chances of a stillbirth or malformed baby are substantially higher based on how far into the pregnancy the mother was at exposure. Letʼs not forget that research proves receiving sufficient amounts of radiation

could also substantially increase oneʼs chances of developing cancer later in life.

a condition that may affect not only the survivors of a disaster but rela-

tives, friends and witnesses (for example, emergency rescue workers, and firefighters).

What is Nuclear Energy?

When atomic energy collides with nuclear reaction of fusion or fission, the energy produced as a result, is called nuclear energy. Today, the world

usage of nuclear energy is around 16%. Radioactivity of atoms is also

subjected to produce nuclear power in order to harness energy. For example, to make the turbine work, a nuclear chain reactor runs, where large amounts of boiling water and heat are produced, that drives the

former. Although itʼs the megawatts of power that is generated during the process, but the initial cost of setting up and harnessing a nuclear plant is very high.

Nuclear Energy is produced naturally and in man-made operations that work under human control. This procedure takes place as follows:

Naturally – nuclear energy can be produced naturally. For example, the stars and the sun make light and heat by nuclear reactions

Man-Made – nuclear energy can be produced unnaturally too. There are

different machines that can be used in the procedure. For example, machines called nuclear reactors, parts of nuclear power plants are used to produce electricity for many cities. Man-made nuclear reactions can also be produced as a result of explosions of atomic and hydrogen bombs.

In addition to this, nuclear energy can be produced in two different ways.

First, large nuclei are used and split to release energy. Second, small nuclei are combined to release energy. This process is also known as nuclear fission and nuclear fusion respectively.

be released. The nuclear reactors and atomic bomb work by fission. The main fuel used for nuclear fission to produce energy is Uranium. As soon as the uranium nucleus is split, several neutrons are released which are

used to split the remaining uranium nuclei. This phenomenon is referred to as a chain reaction.

As far as nuclear fusion is concerned, in this process, the nuclei or atoms are joined together, or fused. This is only possible in very hot conditions.

The hydrogen bomb, humanityʼs most powerful and destructive weapon, also works by fusion.

There are both advantages and disadvantages related to Nuclear Energy.

Is Any amount of Radiation Safe?

Radiation disasters are one of the most common known and the most

disastrous accidents of all times. Especially recalling Nagasaki and Hiroshima, it is very clear how radiation works on the human body. However,

there are still concerns about if any amount of radiation exposure is safe

for the human body. These questions can be answered with a little medical light over the matter and some alternative points of view.

Without getting too scientific, the main effect of radiation on the human body is ionization of cells. The bonds between the cells are broken by

radiation particles speeding up the cells. This is particularly vital at the

cellular level. This is why radiation causes many negative effects on humans.

For many of you who donʼt know, we get some radiation everyday of our

life. Radiation is present when we fly, when we visit hospitals for x-rays, even operating some household appliances will give us a little radiation

dose. This example also pulls the most common form of radiation, the

cellular phone. This small gadget that we are always carrying in our hands and pockets is a permanent dose of radiation to the human body. However, this is bearable until the level reaches higher concentration. In this case, severe damage can occur.

Radiation has a more implicit effect on the weaker individual. A healthy

body is capable enough to fight with radiation that gets into the body and

affects the cells. However, if the system is immune and slow, the body will not be able to defend itself.

According to a detailed research, some documented effects include: 70 rems – vomiting 75 rems – hair loss 90 rems – diarrhea

100 rems – hemorrhage 13

This means, a small amount of radiation, which is less than 70 rems, does not result in severe conditions. However, it is still advisable to ignore radiation interaction as much as possible.

Effects of Radiation, Type and Exposure Pathway Types of Radiation Radiation falls into two categories, non-ionizing radiation and Ionizing radiation. As you could guess, non-iodizing radiation has little effect on

living tissue. It is made up microwave, infrared, visible light, and thermal radiation particles. Ionizing radiation (which is what we should worry about) consist of Alpha, Beta, Gamma rays, X-ray and Neutron.

Radiation Exposure Pathway Radiation exposure pathway is simply the route through which an indi-

vidual is exposed to radiation and contaminated. The US Environmental Protection Agency lists three generally recognized exposure pathways: Inhalation, Ingestion and Direct Exposure.

Inhalation means you breathe in radioactive material from contaminated dust or smoke. Exposure by Ingestion occurs through food and drink.

Ingestion has a tendency to introduce alpha and beta particles into the body in large amounts doing damage to tissue and altering DNA.

With direct exposure alpha particles are of a lesser concern as they can-

not penetrate the skin unless through open sores and wounds but Beta particles burn the skin and cause damage to the eyes. Gamma rays can penetrate the skin and make up a huge concern for individuals exposed through external contaminants.

Effects of Radiation on Humans Ionizing radiation tends to strip electrons from atoms causing change to

chemical bonds and living tissue. The exact effect of radiation on living tissue is largely based on the amount of radioactive material one is exposed to and the duration of exposure.

1 - NUCLEAR ENERGY Exposure to radioactive ionizing particles anywhere from 5 to 70 rem may induce nausea, vomiting, fatigue or changes in blood chemistry. These

effects begin to manifest within a few hours of exposure. Other more severe effects require higher doses of radiation (90 rem and upwards) and longer exposure periods. Receiving 1,000 rem and above induces internal bleeding and will most likely cause death.

It should however be noted that effects of radiation may be reduced and consequences delayed with timely treatment.

Stochastic Health Effects Government and Energy companies have a clear emphasis on how good

nuclear power and nuclear energy is for us and our environment. However itʼs too good to believe that itʼs not dangerous. We can be sure about this

because we have proof from the history that highlights all the theories that make it much worse than we think.

As to what past experiences bring along, the volume and length of radiation exposure affects the sternness or type of effect. One of the two broad categories is Stochastic Health effect.

Stochastic refers to the likelihood about something that is expected to

happen. Its effects are basically associated with chronic (low level) and a lengthy period of exposure to radiation. A high level of exposure is the

main reason why health effects occur, but do not affect the severity or type of the effect.

One of the most severe results of high radiation exposure is cancer. According to the natural procedure, the natural process controls the rate at which cells are produces and replaced. They also control other processes

of the body like replacing and repairing damaged tissues. As soon as the radiation damages at the cellular or molecular level, the growth of cells become uncontrollable, ultimately resulting in cancer.

Radiation can also cause mutation. In other words itʼs the change that is caused in the DNA by radiation. The “blueprints” can be used as proof as they ensure cell replacement and repair as a perfect copy of the original cell.

even creates some during repair. The mutations can be both genetic and

teratogenic. While genetic mutation is passed on to ospring, a teratogenic mutation is the result of exposure of the fetus the woman is carrying and aects only the individual who was exposed.

Non-Stochastic Health Effects No matter how hard the Energy companies and government try to brainwash us by feeding only the good side of nuclear energy and nuclear plants, there are still many reasons to be apprehensive about it. With all the past experiences it is quite clear that nuclear energy has a very dark

side which cannot be neglected. The other part of the two broad categories is classified as Non-stochastic health effects.

Non- Stochastic (also known as acute) effects are a result of high level

of radiation exposure. These effects reach their severity as the exposure

increases. Unlike stochastic effects, non-stochastic effects are characterized by a threshold dose below which they do not occur. In simpler words, there is a clear relationship between the effect and the exposure when it

comes to non-stochastic effects. In addition to this, it typically results when a large volume of radiation is received in a short span of time. The

effects are obvious within a few hours of exposure. Examples of non-stochastic effects include skin and tissue burns, skin reddening (erythema), sterility, cataract formation, radiation sickness and eventually death!

Radiation sickness is also referred to as radiation poisoning. It is the major cause of pre-mature aging and death. If the dosage is high, death can

even occur within to months of interaction. The symptoms include: weakness, skin burns, nausea, hair loss or diminished organ function.

During medical check ups, many patients who are given radiation treat-

ment, often experience acute effects. This is because they are in contact with high bursts of radiation on a daily basis during the whole treatment session.

Effects of Radiation on Pregnancy Prenatal Radiation Exposure: Prenatal radiation exposure occurs when a nursing mother is exposed to

a dose of radiation before childbirth. While radiation exposure may result

in birth defects, miscarriage or stillbirth, it is very unlikely unless when exposed to larger doses, far exceeding calculated sums for traditional clinical procedures such as X-rays or CT scans.

The Center for Disease Control lists the most sensitive periods of preg-

nancy as between the 2nd and 18th week of the gestational cycle during which the fetus is yet to develop the majority of its body parts and growth

retardation is more likely to occur. Increased exposure to radiation at such early stages is likely to cause fetal deformities or induce mental retardation. A CDC Guideline for Physicians highlights a 20% increased risk of mental retardation for embryos 8 to 15 weeks exposed to radiation levels

from 5 to 50 rads within short periods. Conventional X-ray examinations deliver far less than 5 rads on the average per session.

According to Perinalogy.com, a dose of 500 rads is sufficient to cause

death in 100% human embryo of 18 weeks or less, and only 10 rads for a fetus less than 2 weeks old.

Increased Cancer Risk Exposure to radiation before birth may bring about carcinogenic effects

potentially raising chances of a person developing cancer during child-

hood or much later in life. While the risk levels for developing cancer during childhood is known to be between 1% and 6% above the norm for radiation doses 5 to 50 rads and more than 6% on exposure levels up to 50

rads. Data on how prenatal exposure to radiation may cause carcinogenic effects later in life is not yet known.

2 - FOR YOUR HEALTH Specific caution must be taken to avoid receiving excessive doses of radiation during pregnancy. Routine X-ray examinations and CT scans do

not hamper the development of a fetus or cause childhood cancer in more

than 99% incidents, while fluoroscopic procedures such as radiotherapy

during pregnancy may significantly raise risks for cancer and non-cancer related effects in an unborn child.

How Dangerous is it for Your Health?

Despite the fact that a large amount of energy is produced through nuclear power plants, there are many disadvantages that are directly related to human living conditions. The major one being the outcome of nuclear radiation that brings irreversible changes in mankind and can even lead to

fatality. The problems that mankind faces are also carried forward by the generation that creates the most crucial circumstances.

Radiation is a naturally occurring form of energy that occurs in sound

waves and sunlight. Mostly everyone experiences a little dosage of radiation throughout their lives. But there is a type of radiation exposure that

is frightening and comes from a short-tem intense dose that results in sickness and radiation poisoning. This usually occurs as a result of severe

radiation accidents. There are several ways this poisonous radiation can mix with local oxygen to create severe health hazards. These radiation accidents can take place in:

Nuclear power plants Mining Testing and working with nuclear weapons Nuclear pharmacists Hospitals where radiation cancer treatment takes place Talking about nuclear power, there are more than enough nuclear bombs

to kill every person living on Earth today. Especially the two most powerful nations United States and Russia share around 50,000 nuclear weapons between them.

There are many chances for nuclear explosions to take place especially

when there are no proper cautions taken. In such a case these nuclear explosions produce radiation. The radiation directly aects the cells of the

death. Sickness can strike people even after years of exposure to nuclear radiation.

Another possible type of reactor disaster is known as a meltdown. This

occurs when ďŹ ssion reaction goes out of control and leads to a huge nuclear explosion discharging great amounts of radiation.

There are several symptoms of catching poisonous radiation. The immediate signs are as follows:

Skin turns red and burns Nausea Hair loss Organs failure Diarrhea Ulcers or welts where the skin interacts with radioactive material.

How does it compare to the risk of cancer from other sources?

Ionizing radiation is a proven cancer causing agent (carcinogen) in humans.

The evidence is quite clear especially when we look back to the survivors in Japan after the bombing on Hiroshima took place. The victims were treated with high doses of radiation and were exposed to high radiation at work, such as uranium miners.

According to the studies on radiation and cancer risks, the real reason behind it has been determined. People exposed to very high doses of radiation in the setting seemed to be the real victims of cancer risks.

However, it is still kind of a mystery to ďŹ gure out whether smaller increase

in cancer risk will be achieved with lower levels of radiation exposure or not.

Still, most scientists and regulatory agencies agree that even small doses of radiation increase cancer risk. But there is no threshold which radiation

is thought to be totally safe. According to another study held by health

physicists, they estimate that, out of every 10,000 people, each person is exposed to 1 rem of ionizing radiation. This is in a very small dose that

carries on throughout the lifetime. This increases the expectancy in the number of people dying with cancer than would have otherwise.

Moreover, out of these 10,000 people, it is expected that almost 2,000 already die of cancer from dierent causes that are all non-radiated.

However, the accumulation of 1 rem of radiation that is exposed to people will slide up the number to about 2005 or 2006.

To reach to a conclusion and to give you the real picture of the story, it is probable that most people receive around three tenths of a rem (300 mrem) every year from natural background sources of radiation that increase the risk of cancer and eventually more deaths with its exposure.

What Are The Risks Of Other Long-Term Health Effects?

Genetic mutations and teratogenics are next in the cue after cancer, which are one of the most prominent long term health effects caused by radiation.

Teratogenic mutation results when foetuses (unborn children) are exposed

to radiation. This has a very bad effect on unborn children. You can expect

the child to have a smaller brain size or head, or incomplete formation of

eyes, abnormally slow growth as well as mental retardation. According to research, foetuses are harmfully affected to this extent because they are

very sensitive during eight to fifteen weeks after conception. However, they are less sensitive between sixteen and twenty five weeks old.

This is still unknown whether there is a bond between mental retardation and the dose of radiation. However, according to scientists, four out of

one thousand foetuses that are between eight and fifteen weeks old will become mentally retarded. On the other hand, if the foetuses are between

their sixteen and twenty five weeks phase, it is likely that one of them might be mentally retarded.

A foetus can also get affected if it inherited with genetic effects. These effects travel from parents to children. If the parents are both exposed to one rem, there is an estimate that about fifty severe heredity effects will

occur in a group of one million live-born children. Moreover, about 127 heredity effects are definitely passed to the descendents carrying at least some of the severe ones too.

These genetic effects include those that occur spontaneously (“just happen”) as well as those that have non-radioactive causes.

Protecting Yourself and Loved Ones Although nuclear disasters are rare, they still happen frequently enough for us to care about protecting ourselves and loved ones. Events such

as the Japanese Nuclear Disaster, Chernobyl, and Three-mile Island in

the U.S. lead us to believe itʼs necessary to take precaution against such events should they occur.

When Living Close to a Power Plant There are usually safety guidelines operators of such plant will make available from time to time detailing residents on what to do should a nuclear meltdown occur. At the Fukushima plant in Japan, a 20-kilometer

exclusion zone was established, all residents within were asked to move out. If you live close to a nuclear power plant, itʼs advisable you relocate farther away to reduce risks of contact with dispersing radioactive material.

Can You Go Outdoors?

This depends on the level of contamination to your environment determined

by how close you are to the source or nuclear power plant. It is however advisable you stay indoors with windows shut till officials say otherwise.

What happens when it rains?

As winds happen to be the greatest dispersal agent of any radioactive cloud formed, it is very likely any rains that fall within a contamination zone will

contain radioactive material at unsafe levels. After the Japanese disaster,

radioactive material was detected although at higher than normal but still safe levels in far away countries like the U.S., Scotland, and Finland. If you

live close to the site of a nuclear disaster do not drink, or come in contact with rain water. Keep windows shut as it rains.

2 - FOR YOUR HEALTH Protection against radioactive iodine Radioactive Iodine, chemically known as Iodine-131 is a by-product of

the nuclear process and very much likely to be found in the event of a nuclear meltdown. As radioactive material disperses from its source by

air or water, Iodine 131 presents a huge health risk to anyone who is exposed.

The thyroid gland absorbs nearly all of the Iodine in our blood but it

cannot effectively differentiate radioactive Iodine from the regular safer one. Any of both types of iodine in the blood stream will be absorbed

by the thyroid gland till it gets saturated with Iodine in which case any Iodine then found in the blood stream is passed out through the kidneys - radioactive or not.

As a radioactive isotope, Iodine 131 resides in the body and kills cells it

comes into contact with. Depending amounts ingested, it can also increase

risks of developing thyroid cancer, mutations or non-cancerous growth later in life especially in children.

Since the Chernobyl incident, Iodine pills, also known as Potassium Iodide

pills or KI pills have been the preferred option to protect large populations

against the effects of radioactive iodine. When taken at least 24 hours before exposure and at recommended intervals afterwards, KI pills greatly

reduce chances of radioactive Iodine being absorbed into the thyroid gland due to its already being saturated with regular Iodine.

Can disinfectants be substituted for iodine pills? What about seaweed?

Disinfectants, Seaweed, Iodized Salt, Kelp tablets, and even Seawater do not serve as adequate substitutes for Iodine pills as they do not contain iodine in sufficient quantities to achieve the primary purpose of filling up the thyroid gland to its highest point of iodine intake. According to the

2 - FOR YOUR HEALTH Salt Institute, the average salt producer in the U.S. uses Potassium Iodide

at a level of 0.006% to 0.01%KI, considering that each _ teaspoon serving of Iodized salt contains only roughly 130micrograms of Potassium Iodide,

about 250 teaspoons of iodized salt per day is needed to reach 130

milligrams of Potassium Iodide; same quantities found in any regular single KI pill.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder This is the type of health condition that may occur to people after they that were exposed a tragic event like the Japanʼs Tsunami.

What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD is a form of severe anxiety disor-

der that develops after experiencing or witnessing a tragic event resulting in psychological trauma. Also known as shell shock, PTSD according to webmd.com is a serious condition that may also develop if an individual is exposed to serious physical harm or the threat of it.

Symptoms of PTSD
