CHEERS TO CLEAN WATER: Wainiyavu Village Celebrates

A momentous occasion for Wainiyavu village and school as we celebrate the commissioning of the surface water project—a Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation testament to the power of collaboration and community empowerment. With an investment totaling $100,000, this project not only addresses the immediate need for clean water but also aligns with Sustainable Development Goal and the Fiji Government’s National Development Plan.

Access to safe drinking water and proper sanitation is not just a fundamental human right, but crucial for community health and resilience, especially in the face of climate change. By ensuring clean water sources and adequate sanitation facilities, we safeguard the health and well-being of Wainiyavu village residents and empower them to thrive amidst environmental challenges.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the New Zealand High Commission in partnership with Rotary New Zealand World Community Services, its implementing partners Rotary Pacific Water for Life Foundation and Vaiwai Pleass Beverage for their invaluable support and partnership.

Let us move forward with renewed commitment and solidarity, harnessing the transformative power of collective action to ensure a brighter future for the residents of Wainiyavu village and beyond.

Celebrating 20 Years of Impact: The Journey

Chairman’s Reflection: Embracing Change, Transforming Lives, Leaping into the future

Dear

As we mark two decades of the Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation’s impactful journey, it’s an opportune moment for reflection, gratitude, and recommitment to our noble cause. Over the past 20 years, our foundation has evolved from modest beginnings to become a beacon of hope, empowerment, and transformative change for communities across Fiji.

Reflecting back to our inception in 2004, our vision was clear: to make a tangible and lasting difference in the lives of those facing adversities. With just two foundational programs, Sustainable Funding and Vodafone Red Alert, we embarked on our mission to support charities and communities in need. Little did we anticipate the profound impact and transformative growth that would follow, shaping the landscape of philanthropy in Fiji which has the power to be replicated to the Pacific.

Today, as we celebrate our journey, I am immensely proud to share that our foundation has experienced exponential growth, expanding into a comprehensive network of 10 impactful programs that touch the lives of 100 charities annually. This remarkable expansion underscores our steadfast commitment to broadening our reach and deepening our impact, ensuring that no community in Fiji is left behind. Together, we have invested a staggering $50 million in social services, forging enduring partnerships with 1000 program charity partners and an extensive network of collaborators.

I vividly recall, during the launch of the Vodafone World of Difference program in 2010, Director of Vodafone Fiji Limited, Rushell Hewitt, delivered a poignant message that continues to resonate with us today. He emphasized the transformative power of committed and passionate individuals in both successful organizations and charitable endeavors. Hewitt highlighted the program’s unique ability to harness the talents of individuals, allowing them to operate at their highest level of commitment while making a positive impact on communities. He articulated the ripple effect of the program, noting how the influence of just 36 dedicated participants could extend far beyond their immediate involvement, leaving a lasting and profound mark on Fiji’s social landscape. Hewitt’s vision for World of Difference extended beyond mere volunteerism; he saw it as a platform for individuals to use their lives to change the lives of others, fostering a culture of impactful engagement and social responsibility among Fiji’s youth.

In Hewitt’s words, the Vodafone World of Difference program was

not just about temporary assistance but about creating lasting change “forever.” Through this initiative, participants had the opportunity to immerse themselves in meaningful work that would not only benefit charitable organizations but also leave a lasting legacy of positive transformation in the lives of those they served. By empowering youths to engage more effectively and efficiently in their communities, World of Difference elevated volunteerism to a higher level, emphasizing the profound impact that individuals can have when given the opportunity to make a difference.

Since our inception, we have collaborated with over 2000 charitable organizations, reaching 800 villages and supporting 400 schools, with direct grants totaling $12 million. Each grant, each partnership, and each initiative has been guided by a singular mission: to uplift, empower, and enrich the lives of

those we serve.

In 2010, we introduced two pioneering programs, Vodafone World of Difference and Mobile for Good, which have since become cornerstones of our charitable initiatives. The Vodafone World of Difference program stands as a testament to our belief in the power of individual agency and volunteerism. By fully funding year-long engagements with charities of their choice, we empower individuals to make a tangible impact in their communities. To date, this innovative program has disbursed a total direct grant of $2 million, supporting 140 candidates and mobilizing 6000 volunteers, each contributing their skills and expertise towards meaningful social causes.

Our Mobile for Good program harnesses the transformative potential of mobile technology to address societal challenges and enhance access to essential services. With 25 mChannels reaching over 120,000 communities, this program has provided free services worth over $5 million annually, bridging digital divides and empowering underserved populations throughout Fiji. Additionally, our Technology Rollout and Duke of Edinburgh reach to over 300 schools have enriched educational experiences and fostered a culture of innovation and digital literacy among future generations.

Beyond our programs, the Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation stands as a beacon of philanthropic leadership through initiatives like “Beyond Funder.” By orchestrating 10 corporate philanthropy seminars and 4 multidisciplinary conferences, we have cultivated a platform that engages over 1500 stakeholders, fostering collaboration, and knowledge-sharing across diverse sectors. Through these inclusive forums, we have catalyzed actionable solutions for pressing societal challenges, underscoring our commitment to driving sustainable change and fostering a brighter future for all Fijians.

Our dedicated staff exemplify unwavering commitment, dedication, and passion through initiatives like “Double Your Dollar.” With 200 charities and organizations receiving support, it’s evident that Vodafone and ATH employees are actively living our values of enriching lives and making a positive impact in the communities we serve. Their collective efforts serve as a testament to the transformative power of corporate responsibility and social engagement.

played a vital role in establishing connectivity and facilitating relief efforts in the hardest-hit areas.

Led by our dedicated team leader, Lise Mackie, and supported by network engineers Rob McLennan and Callum Ferguson, the Instant Network team worked tirelessly to restore communication links between Fiji’s islands, providing crucial support to relief coordinators and connecting families across the Pacific. Their efforts, alongside the unwavering support of Air New Zealand, exemplify the spirit of collaboration and resilience that defines our Foundation’s commitment to serving communities in times of crisis. As we reflect on this milestone, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all those who contributed to the success of this mission, reaffirming our dedication to making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

As we chart the course for the future, our foundation remains steadfast in its commitment to leveraging technology, innovation, and partnerships for social good. Our programs serve as shining examples of how creativity, collaboration, and compassion can drive meaningful change, creating a brighter, more inclusive future for all Fijians.

In closing, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated team, our invaluable partners, and every individual who has contributed to our journey over the past two decades. Together, we have achieved remarkable milestones, but our journey is far from over. With renewed vigor and unwavering dedication, let us continue to build a better tomorrow for generations to come.

Warm regards,

As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation, we are reminded of the pivotal moments that have shaped our journey of service and impact. One such moment occurred in the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Winston in 2016, when Fiji faced unprecedented devastation. In response to the urgent need for communication infrastructure, Vodafone Fiji swiftly reached out to the Vodafone Foundation, igniting a rapid deployment of the Instant Network. This network, equipped with communication equipment and powered by a mobile generator,

Digitalizing Provincial Councils for Empowerment

“iTaukei Affairs and Vodafone Foundation partner to digitalize Provincial Councils for community empowerment and economic growth”

iTaukei Affairs invited Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation to share innovative information pertaining to grants available, which has the potential to contribute to the vision of transforming and digitalising Provincial Councils. At a recent Roko Tuis Board Planning workshop, hosted by iTaukei Affairs, we had the privilege of contributing to discussions on strategic planning, provincial wellbeing, and the transformative potential of digitalization.

Team iTaukei and Foundations discussions were centered around leveraging smart technology to connect vanua for social, environmental, and economic good. From the rollout of smart technology in community halls to ensuring Provincial wellbeing through online capacity building and storytelling via social media, the potential for digital transformation to uplift communities is immense.

By effectively branding products and services, Provincial Councils attract investment opportunities, foster economic growth, and empower local communities. Moreover, their commitment to transparency and accountability builds trust among stakeholders, ensuring that development efforts are guided by the principles of integrity and inclusivity. Through a cohesive branding strategy, Provincial Councils emerge as dynamic hubs of innovation and progress, driving sustainable development and prosperity across Fiji’s diverse landscape.

One key aspect explored is the shift from traditional charity to empowering communities through commerce. By enabling villages to sell their products and services on online marketplaces, facilitated by secured payment gateways and mobile wallets, we are fostering economic independence and self-sustainability.

NCA’s Integrated Climate & Community Resilience Initiatives

In the heart of Fiji’s Northern Division, Ratu Tevita Tokalauvere spearheads transformative climate change initiatives through the Northern Charity Alliance (NCA). By collaborating with partners such as WWF, Fiji National University, and Community Centred Conservation (C3), NCA focuses on environmental conservation, community engagement, education, and sustainable practices to combat climate change.

A standout project of NCA is the shoreline protection initiative, where mangrove planting is undertaken in conjunction with local communities to combat rising sea levels and enhance coastal resilience. Through programs like the Kids Club initiative, children are empowered to become Reef Rangers, engaging in activities like coral reef protection and mangrove planting. Moreover, sustainable agricultural practices are promoted across three provinces to ensure food security in the face of changing weather patterns.

NCA’s efforts extend to 15 villages, where educational programs and workshops raise awareness about climate change impacts and disaster preparedness. Through collaborations with various organizations, NCA has significantly empowered women and youth in the Cakaudrove, Bua, and Macuata Provinces. Women benefit from financial literacy programs and micro-enterprises, while youth engage in livelihood projects like piggery farming.

Employing an inclusive approach guided by the Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) framework, NCA ensures the involvement of all community members. By partnering with the Australian Volunteers Program (AVI), local capacity is enhanced through in-country volunteers, ultimately fostering community engagement, project implementation, and sustainable development. NCA’s integrated initiatives are key to building resilient communities, promoting sustainable development, and enhancing social and economic empowerment.

President of Northern Charity Alliance, Arunesh Vishwa, extends warm regards and congratulations to the Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation on its remarkable 20-year journey. The foundation’s vision and generosity have been instrumental in driving positive change and creating lasting impact in the Northern provinces. As a former Director of the foundation, I am grateful for their unwavering support and dedication. Together, we have made significant strides in enhancing climate resilience and empowering communities. Special thanks to all partners, sponsors, and contributors for their valuable support in transforming lives and strengthening our society. Here’s to many more years of collaboration and impact.

Celebrating a Decade of Transformation with Rabi Virgin Coconut Oil

In the heart of Rabi Island, a remarkable journey of growth and empowerment has unfolded over the past decade. Initiated by Terikano Takesau through the Vodafone World of Difference program, the Rabi Virgin Coconut Oil project began with a $60,000 contribution for training, raw materials, and machinery. From modest beginnings in 2014, using 3,000 kg of coconuts monthly, the project now processes 6,000 kg monthly and produces 500 liters of pure virgin coconut oil.

Financially, the project’s working capital surged from $13,000 in 2014 to $97,000 in 2024, allowing investments in better technology and expanded operations. The diversification of products has been significant, growing from five to twenty value-added products, available in twenty local markets and six overseas buyers.

The project’s impact on the community is profound, especially in empowering women. Starting with 100 women, the project now involves 1,000, providing them with financial independence and new skills. Men and the entire Rabi community of 6,000 people have also benefited, with increased employment opportunities and economic development.

Terikano’s dedication extended to organizing training on making virgin coconut oil, lotion, packaging, and labeling. Her efforts included a showcase at the Rabi Festival, attracting over 3,000 attendees. Utilizing media skills from WoD Media Training, Terikano’s stories in local dailies brought significant donations and support, including $10,000 worth of school items.

Marking their success and recognition, Banaban Virgin Coconut Rabi scooped two prestigious awards, highlighting their excellence and commitment. The women of Rabi are now seeking funds for a virgin coconut oil factory to meet high demand and further enhance production efficiency.

‘HAPPY 10TH ANNIVERSARY RABI VIRGIN COCONUT OIL’

A Note of Gratitude

Terikano Takesau expresses heartfelt thanks to the Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation for harnessing the Rabi dream and helping it reach fruition. “Without their support and belief in our vision, none of this would have been possible. The foundation’s contribution has been instrumental in transforming the lives of many on Rabi Island, and we are deeply grateful for their partnership.”

A Beacon of Hope: Sunil Kumar’s Journey with Homes of Hope

Sunil Kumar’s journey is a testament to resilience, transformation, and unwavering commitment to social change. Born into a humble family in Moto Ba, Sunil was the first in his family to pursue higher education. His academic journey at the University of the South Pacific (USP) marked a significant departure from his cane farming background, setting the stage for his future endeavors.

During his time at USP, Sunil immersed himself in volunteer work with the Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS). This engagement ignited his passion for helping others. A pivotal moment came when he attended a workshop and met representatives from Homes of Hope (HOH), an organization dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating women and children from sexual exploitation and domestic abuse. Their stories deeply resonated with Sunil, sparking a desire to contribute meaningfully to this cause.

Driven by this newfound passion, Sunil approached HOH’s management, expressing his wish to conduct skills training for the residents. Despite being a single, non-Christian fresh graduate, his determination and sincerity impressed HOH’s founder, who offered him a volunteer position. This opportunity marked the beginning of Sunil’s transformative journey with HOH.

In August, Sunil discovered the Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation’s World of Difference program, which he joined to amplify his impact. Starting as a project officer, he soon demonstrated his capabilities and was entrusted with establishing the Women’s Institute for Women & Girls, focusing on equipping women and girls with essential skills for independence and empowerment.

Sunil’s role at HOH evolved, and he is now the Team Leader for Training and Social Enterprise, as well as the Management Representative of HOH. Under his leadership, 19 staff members received international skills training through the Australia-Pacific Technical College (APTC). He has also prepared HOH for registration with the Higher Education Commission of Fiji, enhancing its credibility and enabling it to offer accredited programs.

Sunil has expanded HOH’s community outreach programs, including a climate change initiative across five communities focusing on climate-smart gardening. He envisions leveraging technology to further enhance HOH’s impact, connecting master gardeners and community leaders through digital platforms and showcasing HOH’s products and services online.

Through the Vodafone World of Difference program, Sunil Kumar has transformed lives at Homes of Hope, setting a precedent for holistic community development. His story exemplifies the impact of education, dedication, and a commitment to social change, serving as a beacon of hope and a model for transformative community service.
