This panel explores how play both shapes and is shaped by children’s experiences in a connected world. What does it mean to play? Where do digital and physical experiences intersect? Is there a distinction between digital and non-digital play? And what do adults need to understand about what play looks like today? Panellists will share insights from digital, social, and cultural perspectives to collectively build understandings of play and explore new possibilities for playful participation in the digital age.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly embedded in our lives. From smart home technologies to search engines, AI is everywhere, and children are growing up with it. The release of ChatGPT by OpenAI in 2022 brought to attention the endless possibilities and risks of AI for children, affecting areas from learning, socialising to creativity and agency. In this panel, we take a deep dive into the various perspectives around the challenges and opportunities of AI for children now and in the future. By the end of this session, we hope to develop a research agenda around AI and children within the Digital Child.

This panel discussion will take up the issue of how to design for engagement and when (and how we know) digital design tips cross over from being enticing to encourage high-quality play to deceptive, manipulative patterns. Where is that line? How do we know? What are the competing considerations? How might we think about this? The purpose is to explore that landscape through a question-and-answer session with panellists from research, media, and industry.
