A variable displacement pump is a device that turns mechanical energy to hydraulic (fluid) energy. The displacement, or amount of fluid pumped per revolution of the pump's input shaft can vary while the pump is running. A variable displacement pump has a method of increasing or reducing displacement either manually, hydraulically or electronically. The method of displacement change depends upon the pump’s structure, differing between piston pumps and vane pumps.
