Internet of Things, We are in a decade of consolidation and productivity enhancement. New innovations are hard to come by but there is huge potential to leverage MORE VALUE out of existing systems. The aircraft engine companies like Pratt & Whitney and GE have advanced their aircraft engines with numerous sensors to collect real time flight data. P&W have fitted more than 5000 sensors in their GTF engine which produces 10GB of data per second. So a flight from Europe to Americas will produce more than 800 TB of data. Even Facebook is collecting more than 600 TB of data per day. P&W has an orderbook of more than 7000 engines and when all become operational, P&W will have to potentially process data in ZetaBytes. It HUGE. Imagine something similar that GE Engines are also generating equal size of data. And why just aircraft engines, we have turbines, MRI, heavy duty machineries which all have thousands of sensors and collecting TB’s of data every day. We need Big Data and Data Science to process such a huge information. First of all, why are we generating and processing such a huge data, what does it achieve for us – just one thing PRODUCTIVITY – Do More At Less. And this drives revenue growth. The data from aircraft engines can tell us how to enhance engine productivity so that it consumes less FUEL and fly more. Reduce number of accidents and emergency situations to save unnecessary expenses. The data from Turbines can tell us how it can generate more and cleaner power with less FUEL consumption and with least down time. GE expects to gain up to 40% improvement in factory efficiencies by the application of IoT and Big Data Analytics. Its time to marry machines and humans with the datachain to increase the productivity from the machines with lower human intervention and that is possible with IOT and Automation.
