Control Originally established as an electronics workshop before specialising in fibre optic lighting and then LED, Digilin’s expertise in controls dates back to its very early days.

For instance, many of Australia’s top theatres and auditoriums employ our super smooth dimming technology to ensure that performers are able to deliver their world-class shows under the perfect conditions.

Fibre optic lighting Renowned for its capability in specialist decorative applications such as in art sculptures and water features, and in high exposure installations such as on the exterior of skyscrapers and other structures, fibre optic provides unique lighting opportunities.

Digilin was a very early adopter of fibre optic lighting, developing some of Australia’s first systems in the 1980s. We have since gone on to build some of the world’s largest and most complex fibre optic lighting installations, including the Melbourne Arts Centre Spire, which required over 6600m of fibre cable, and the Adelaide Convention Centre “Starry Night” system, which with more than 42,000 individual light points, is believed to be the largest star ceiling in the world. We manufacture our own lightsources and can combine systems with our control products for ultimate reliability and performance.

Century Tower Dubai, 2003

Project details

A custom-built exterior solution for what was the tallest residential building in the world

When built in 2003, Century Tower was the tallest residential building in the world.

During construction, the designers acknowledged the worldwide attention that was centred on this building and decided to enhance it with a spectacular lighting system for the exterior. The brief included high output, point source luminaires, capable of changing colours and delivering dynamic sequences.

This was 2003 and very early for LED technology. After a thorough search, it was determined that Digilin were capable of engineering a reliable lighting device and control system for this ambitious task.

Each fixture incorporates a LED array with red, green and blue LEDs in a particular pattern to produce vibrant colours in a directly viewed luminaire. All fixtures are controlled via an onboard DMX receiver, so each is individually addressed and able to play a controlled part in a larger colourful scheme.

The fixtures are a custom machined body that acts as the housing for the LED array, but also as an efficient heatsink to manage the considerable heat generated by the high output fixture in the swelter of a Dubai summer night. The engineered design of these luminaires delivers an IP67 ingress rating which was a critical factor due to the installed location.

The commissioning of the system included connection to a sophisticated Digilin DMX controller to manage the scenes and dynamic sequences. The experience of driving along Sheikh Zayed Road on a summer evening while a 55 storey building illuminates colourful patterns in front of you is incredible.

Adelaide Convention Centre Adelaide, 2017

Project details The Adelaide Convention Centre is one of the world’s most modern, flexible and technologically advanced venues.

Comprising three distinct yet seamlessly integrated buildings, the centre spans 20,000sqm of multi-purpose space. Digilin were extremely honoured to be chosen to design and manufacture a significant amount of lighting and controls for this iconic Australian venue. Following initial discussions with our South Australian distributor HI Lighting SA, it was apparent that this $400m redevelopment would involve some very ambitious design elements and would require state of the art technology and some never-before-seen custom solutions.

The “Starry Night” system is the largest starfield in the world with over 42,000 light points

Digilin’s expertise was deployed into many critical zones of the building to deliver the best possible performance and ongoing reliability. A great example of this is the lighting for the plenary hall which required an LED solution with smooth dimming to ensure show starts have a nice fade to black, and show finishes don’t end with an abrupt “lights on”.

A feature that has received a great deal attention is the Starry Night system in the Plenary hall. This is the largest fibre optic starfield in the world with over 42,000 light points. Each light point is carefully located within panels underneath seating banks, which are raised when the venue is in function mode.

The system uses different sized fibre optic cables illuminated by the Titan series lightsource and scintillation wheel for a realistic night sky effect. This impressive lighting feature provides the perfect ambience for functions and is quickly becoming the preferred backdrop for premier events in the region.

Kingsford Smith Drive Brisbane, 2019

Project details Kingsford Smith Drive is a major roadway, linking the Brisbane Central Business District (CBD) to the Airport, Port of Brisbane, Northshore Hamilton and TradeCoast area. The Kingsford Smith Drive upgrade involved road widening from four to six lanes plus the inclusion of pedestrian and cycle paths and public spaces.

A spectacular riverside development project for one of Australia’s fastest growing cities

Digilin RGB Taipans were selected for installation into the riverside railings, to provide a colour mixing point source illuminator, viewable by all using the river and on the opposite bank. The Taipan required some custom mountings including a threaded head for locking into the fabricated railings along the foreshore.

Constructed from marine grade 316 stainless steel, and factory sealed to IP68 in our Brisbane facility, the Taipan has been in production since the early 2000s. Over this period, the Taipan has been deployed on hundreds of projects in Australia and internationally due to its sturdy construction and reliable performance. The RGB Taipans are driven by Digilin’s new generation RDM/DMX constant current drivers.

Digilin’s HaloFlex flexible LED system was also deployed for illumination of public seating areas and landscape features.

These systems were manufactured by Digilin to required project lengths for easy installation.

Christies Beach High School Adelaide, 2019 Project details Employing a contemporary design and a modern approach to lighting and architecture, Flightpath Architects delivered an incredible teaching facility that focuses exclusively on science, technology, engineering and maths.

Using the latest in lighting and control technology to deliver a striking, stimulating design

The lighting had to use the latest technology and be visually stimulating to align with the already striking design.

In collaboration with our South Australian distributor HI Lighting SA, Digilin were asked to provide advice on suitable lighting and control systems to achieve the demanding expectations of the design. The main system was a captivating entry statement consisting of linear lighting in zig zag patterns at random angles, in random locations.

The light required from these linear sections was to be high output white and RGB colourmixing. Each of the elements needed to be individually controlled with multiple fixed colours, mixed colours, pure whites and dynamic scenes. And all of this had to be fabricated and pre-programmed in Brisbane, then shipped to Adelaide for plug and play installation. Also required for the interior were recessed RGBW linear ceiling fixtures, with the same level of dedicated controls to enable multiple scenes.

The system is controlled using a modified version of our WebColour DMX controller, with customised programming to enable dual zone and global control over each of the elements.

As per the design brief, all of the whites, colours and scenes were pre-programmed, avoiding costly on-site programming charges. The user enjoys direct selection of any of the colours and scenes via a wall mounted touch screen. The entire system was shipped off with detailed layouts and schematics for easy installation by the contractor. Digilin provided technical support throughout the installation process, ensuring the system was installed as intended.
