make the town of Tracy go ’round. So here’s to the people who heal you when you are sick, watch your pets when you go away, give you sight when your eyes start to wane and even do your taxes when you procrastinate. What would you do without them? Accountant/bookkeeper If you need help with your taxes, there’s no need to look farther than Willson & Co., where enrolled agent Penny van der Meer is sure to help you get it all sorted out. She specializes in taxes and representation and works for those who are being audited or are having collection issues. “My focus is on helping my clients,” said van der Meer. “I educate them. Community favorites If it is the things we share that bind us together, consider Tracy residents happily bound. This bedroom

community of 80,000 supports fabulous community events, with the help of exceptional community organizations and the protection of outstanding public agencies. We come together to celebrate at places like the Portuguese Hall and Tracy Community Center, and, also, in our neighborhoods. We are one community, eccentricities and all. And the following are just a few of our favorite things.

Apartment complex Once again, Sycamore Village has proven itself the best apartment complex in Tracy. Affordable rental rates and close proximity to Poet Christian School make it the perfect complex for singles and young families. Amenities include swimming pools and laundry facilities in the common areas and fireplaces in some of the units. First: Sycamore Village, 400 W. Central Ave., 836-9070 Second: Driftwood Apartments, 800 W. Grant Line Road, 835-3187 Third: Chesapeake Bay Apartments, 2941 W. Lowell Ave., 839-9792

Community event/activity October will mark the 20th anniversary of the first Harvest Wine Stroll in downtown Tracy, and over the years, the event has become a favorite of Tracy residents. Now featuring more than 50 kinds of wine and champagne, the event attracts more than 5,000 people each fall. Organized by the Downtown Tracy Business Improvement Association, the wine stroll also pairs up-scale hors d’oeuvres with the wines. First: Wine Stroll, Downtown Tracy Business Improvement Association, 831-4170 Second: Tracy Farmers Market, 925-825-9090 Third: Tracy Dry Bean Festival, Chamber of Commerce, 835-2131

Community organization For 20 years, volunteers for Tracy Interfaith Ministries have served the people of Tracy by providing food and clothing to those who need it. The organization has been so successful that it is moving to a larger building to accommodate its ever-growing client base. Tracy Press readers have recognized the organization’s efforts and the impact that it has had on the community by naming Tracy Interfaith the No. 1 community organization in town. Martial arts instruction While many martial arts instructors cultivate a reputation for being tough and scary, Joy Quinto, instructor at Quinto’s Martial Arts, takes a different approach.

“I make sure all of the students get personalized instruction,” Quinto said. “It’s more of a family-friendly, yet disciplined atmosphere.”

At Quinto’s Martial Arts, classes are offered to men, women and children as young as 4 years. Quinto says they emphasize confidence, selfdefense, discipline, self-control, integrity and teamwork through the art of tae kwon do. “Our classes are taught with highly motivated instructors. Every person who enters or inquires about Quinto’s Martial Arts is treated with courtesy and respect.”

Favorite food W

hether it’s for a formal birthday celebration or just a quick bite, we in Tracy have standards about where we choose to sit down (or drive through) to eat. Only in certain places is it worth it to break our strict diet and chow down on that delicious rib-eye steak with all the fixings. And for those who have not yet discovered the gems of Tracy’s culinary scene, the following is a little cheat-sheet, as decided by sometime-Tracy Press readers and always-food critics. Asian restaurant The Thai Café continues to shine, claiming its title as the best Asian restaurant for as many years as this category has been around. The restaurant offers mouthwatering selections of fresh-cooked Asian cuisine, all of which can be made vegetarian by request. First: Thai Café, 614 Central Ave., 832-3800 Second: Mandarin Villa, 2501 N. Tracy Blvd., 836-1818 Third: Tracy Thai, 1035 Central Ave., 833-9703

Italian restaurant For pasta the way they make it in the

old country, Tracy Press readers head out to Olive Garden. With the irresistible unlimited soup, salad and breadsticks lunch special, it’s no surprise this is the third year in a row the restaurant has taken the prize as Tracy’s favorite Italian restaurant. D, 835-9040

Mexican restaurant Despite stiff competition from the numerous Mexican restaurants in town, La Villa yet again claimed the prize as Tracy’s best Mexican restaurant. Great-tasting food and friendly

service are a big part of the reason why La Villa was ranked No. 1 for the 10th year in a row. First: La Villa Mexican Restaurant, 57 E. 11th St., 832-5032 Second: Chevy’s Fresh Mex, 2770 Naglee Road, 839-2241 Third: Casa Grande Mexican Bar & Grill, 30 W. 11th St., 836-5344

Taqueria Simple, quick and delicious are three words to describe La Costa Taqueria, which helps explain why it was voted the best taqueria in Tracy. It doesn’t hurt that the 11th Street shop sits just across the street from Tracy High; it has become a favorite of students, parents and teachers.

Among the café’s most popular meals is the Triple Play, a breakfast of two pancakes, two eggs and two bacon strips or sausages for $4.99. Lunch While Tracy is divided about which restaurant offers the best lunch, they are united in their belief that the place to find the city’s best lunch spot is squarely downtown. Tied for first place in Tracy Press readers’ minds are Central Avenue eateries Gerard’s Deli and Thai Café, both of which offer scrumptious lunch specials to suit every taste. Gerard’s is famous for its

Estrada, Ramirez take one match in Modesto Press staff report

The West High girls tennis team’s entrants into the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I doubles tournament — juniors Gabby Ramirez and Ilah Estrada — went 1-1 in the opening day of competition Thursday at the Modesto Fitness and Racquet Club. The Tri-City Athletic League runners-up opened the day with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) win over Stephanie Fry and Sahaar Nowoozi of Vacaville, the Monticello Empire League champions. Ramirez and Estrada recovered from a broken service game and a 4-3 deficit in the first set and a 4-1 hole in the second. Next, the duo met a “very machine-like” pairing from Davis in Katrina Gould and Mercey Bechtold. The Delta Valley Conference champs got ahead early and had no double-faults and very few errors en route to winning, 6-3, 6-1. “It was still a very productive day for our girls,” West coach Ben Tsukiji said. “The competition is very hot right off the bat.”

Tracy To give a nugget of understanding as to how stacked the section singles tennis tournament field was, consider that three-time San Joaquin Athletic Association champion Ana Rocha of Lodi, to whom Tracy Bulldog Corrin Geibig lost in the SJAA finals, lost in the first round, 6-2, 6-0. Geibig drew Central California Conference champion Heather Cotter of Pitman and fared little better, losing 6-1, 6-1 in the first round to the more aggressive player, who forced Geibig to hit big shots, Tracy coach Paul Demsher said. But that was no big deal. “She was very happy to be there,” he said. “She’s only a junior, so she has a chance to go back next year. She had a nice day.” Geibig was the SJAA’s No. 2 seed in the tournament, which featured the best tennis players from Merced to Grass Valley and from Napa to Nevada. ROUNDUP, CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

The St. Mary’s High freshman football team suffered the ignominy of a lopsided 56-8 defeat a year ago — and saw insult added to injury when the Wolf Pack freshmen got to celebrate a Tri-City Athletic League title with that win on the Rams’ home turf. On Thursday, the Rams returned the favor and handed the Wolf Pack a 35-0 setback to celebrate a title of their own on the Peter B. Kyne Field grass-and-dirt. At a glance “We deserved it, I St. Mary’s 35, guess,” said West coach Chris Myers, who is now West 0 1-1 against the TCAL (Frosh) favorites. “That’s a hell of a recruitment class — they’ve got some studs on that team.” The Rams (5-0 Tri-City Athletic League, 9-1) took advantage of a West fumble and an interception to go up 21-0 at halftime and needed only three plays to go up 28-0 after recovering an onside kick to open the second half. Brandon Yerro scooped up a Ram fumble late in the fourth quarter, but the Rams held a 35-0 lead at that point. West

(4-1 TCAL) could move the sticks, but it couldn’t get close to the end zone. Rami Booth gained 101 yards on 17 carries for West, and DeAndre Ligon, Sal Alvarado and DeSean Watson also ground out some tough yards. Clyde Parilla caught two passes for 20 yards. Stephen Grady made five tackles on

defense, and Sumant Chahil and Arthur Granados both added three. Matt French, Kristopher Merrill, Jose Rodriguez, Yerro, Greg Eaglin and Daniel Mora all recorded two tackles each in the final FROSH, CONTINUED ON PAGE 22
