EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Friends, Thank you for joining us tonight at House of DIFFA: Arabesque. On behalf of DIFFA National, we are so grateful for the outpouring of support from each of you here tonight for DIFFA/Dallas - your generosity will have an incredible impact on our efforts to fight HIV/AIDS. With your support, we will make grants to a dynamic group of organizations who are working day in and day out to provide education, prevention services, care and support to individuals and families impacted by HIV. We are thrilled to recognize a group of individuals this evening who have made a significant impact in the fight against HIV/AIDS: the Donna Fishel Community Hero Award presented to Jenifer Strauss; Excellence in Design presented to Verona Martinez; the Health Award to Dr. Patrick Gibson; the Legacy of Love Award presented to Clint Bradley; and the Legend in the Fight Against AIDS Award presented to David Sutherland For more than three decades, DIFFA’s supporters have come together to create wildly imaginative and impactful events that show the depth and breadth of the design community. Most importantly, these events, like House of DIFFA, raise critical funds to help your community directly. Last year, DIFFA/Dallas, along with DIFFA National and our chapters across the country, distributed almost $1 million dollars in

grants which will help thousands of people in North Texas and beyond. These funds are so urgently needed as the rates of new infection among some of our most vulnerable populations have increased.

The success of DIFFA/Dallas in supporting dozens of organizations throughout North Texas is due to an incredibly dedicated Board, Style Council, volunteers and staff. Together, they work throughout the year to create memorable events that not only “wow” but make a significant difference for so many people. Our sincere appreciation to the entire Board, especially to Chuck Steelman and tonight’s chair, Sami Abboud. Kudos for a spectacular year and House of DIFFA! We also extend thanks to our staff, Alison and Twana, and their hard work. OUR HISTORY One of the largest and most successful fundraising organizations aiding HIV/AIDS, DIFFA is a non-profit service provider with chapters in Dallas, New York City, Chicago, Kansas City, San Francisco and Seattle.

The Dallas chapter, formed in 1984, is the only HIV/AIDS organization in Texas that provides funding to local HIV/AIDS Service Organizations within our community. DIFFA/Dallas has granted more than $7.5 million to over 25 front line HIV/AIDS Service Organizations in North Texas providing direct care to those living with or affected by HIV/AIDS. Highlighting the design community, DIFFA/Dallas hosts multiple events throughout the season including Burgers & Burgundy, DIFFA/Dallas Wreath Collection and House of DIFFA. Through your support and generosity, we are able to make a significant impact in our community.

CARLO Dear Friends, It is an honor and privilege to offer on behalf of local HIV/AIDS service organizations and the people we serve, a most sincere thank-you for your support and attendance to the 27th Annual House of DIFFA. DIFFA continues to host one of the most important HIV/AIDS fund-raising events for local organizations here in North Texas thanks to the great volunteers, Board of Directors, and sponsors who continue to devote countless hours and resources to the cause. By joining us tonight, you are part of this commitment, and you remain someone who is willing to stand up against this public health crisis that has taken far too many of our friends and family over the past three decades.

Today, our challenges here in North Texas remain.

While incredibly safe and effective treatment now exists, the cost of these life-saving medications puts them out of reach, even for those with financial means and relatively good health insurance. Additionally, we have learned over our decades of working with people impacted by this infection that without additional support, such as food, transportation, housing, dentistry, and supportive care programs, the medications cannot do the great work of suppressing the virus in people.

We remain at a critical time in the epidemic.

Opportunities exist that even a few years ago were unimaginable. Even more new therapies, and new methods such as taking medications to prevent HIV (called Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis or PrEP) are either here or on the immediate horizon.

Yet, infection rates continue to rise, particularly in communities of color and younger gay men.

Our community here remains an epicenter of new cases with new infection rates remaining one of the highest both in Texas and the U.S. So, this evening, your participation is just as important as it has been before. We stand closer to achieving a goal where AIDS no longer exists. However, to reach this important goal in our lifetime, it will take more resources, more awareness, and an even greater commitment. To join us in this struggle, and to remain a part of this effort, my sincerest thank you to everyone who contributes towards making this such an important event for this community.

CHUCK STEELMAN On behalf of the DIFFA/Dallas Board of Trustees, welcome to House of DIFFA: Arabesque. Thank you for your support of DIFFA/Dallas and the AIDS Service Organizations we support. Many thanks to the DIFFA/ Dallas staff, Board of Trustees, Style Council Ambassadors, and the hundreds of volunteers for their countless hours of hard work, relentless dedication, and generous support of this organization.

DIFFA/Dallas began in 1984 as a non-profit dedicated to financially assist and support people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. In the early years, receiving an HIV diagnosis was a death sentence. DIFFA/Dallas was always there to help people in crisis. Today, due to the advancements in the medical community, the infection can be treated, and those diagnosed with HIV, under proper medical supervision, can still have a full life and remain a productive part of society.

I am proud to say DIFFA/Dallas is still supporting its original mission of supporting agencies who assist people living with HIV and AIDS in North Texas.

Even though we know more today about HIV than ever before, there is still no cure. Close to 50,000 individuals living in the United States are infected with HIV every year. In North Texas, nearly 1,000 residents will contract HIV this year and 25% of those infections will happen to children and youth under the age of 25.

Tonight, you can be the difference by participating in our Fund A Grant, bidding in our Live and Silent Auctions, and by purchasing a raffle ticket for the Range Rover or Jaguar. The AIDS Service Organizations we support are in greater financial need than ever before. Funds granted to these organizations by DIFFA/Dallas support medical, meal, mental health, transportation, educational, and housing programs for clients and their families.

SAMI ABBOUD I want to thank you all for being here tonight and I hope you enjoy the show. More importantly, I know that your attendance is changing lives. In addition to supporting people impacted

by HIV/AIDS, DIFFA/Dallas is inspiring change and helping to improve the quality of life for our entire community.

When my Merrill Lynch peers recommended I join the DIFFA/ Dallas Style Council in 2014, I had no idea what I’d encounter.

My first visit to an AIDS Service Organization opened my eyes to the difference one person can make. I realized that I could not sit idle as others around me struggled to survive. Together, we can overcome anything.

I recognized the DIFFA/Dallas spirit as the same one I grew up with in Beirut, Lebanon. While I’ve seen my home-country encounter countless physical, spiritual and political obstacles, it has always stayed strong. Blending these two worlds seemed like the perfect way to celebrate this year’s House of DIFFA. For me, “Arabesque” combines the boldness of courage with the beauty of peace. It represents resilience in the face of pain and strength in numbers. It’s about never giving up. While a lone Arabian stallion may get lost in the dark, Arabesque is the unified harras that stampedes into the light. Its saddle is tight; its stride is long; and its destination is freedom.

Of course, reaching this destination would have never been possible without the DIFFA/Dallas Board, Chapter Administrators, Style Council Ambassadors, Young Professionals, countless volunteers and generous donors. I thank you all for your passion and your commitment to building a better world.

Young Professionals Program

Launched in 2016, the DIFFA/Dallas Young Professional Program is a group of volunteers consisting of influential individuals in the community, ages 21-35, from various professional backgrounds. This group enhances the events and initiatives of DIFFA/Dallas and the HIV/AIDS service organizations that receive grant funding. In April of 2017, these young supporters provided hands-on support by serving meals to the clients of AIDS Interfaith Network during their One Meal Matters event, providing food on an evening on Saturday. This is the only meal for many clients during the weekend. The young professionals enjoyed serving and connecting with the clients during this event. DIFFA/Dallas is very grateful for the support provided by the Young ProfessionalProgram!

SPOTLIGHT:

ANA GALAVIZ DIFFA/Dallas Young Professional Ana Galaviz, creative services manager at Texas Wesleyan University is a marketing professional with more than five years of combined project management, branding and sales experience. In her role, she interacts daily with other departments and organizations on campus to ensure strategic initiatives are met.

A graduate from the University of North Texas, Galaviz obtained her bachelor’s degree in merchandising. Upon graduation, she accepted a position with Dallas Market Center and held various positions within the marketing department. In 2015, Galaviz left Dallas Market Center to work as an account executive for Bioworld Merchandising, a manufacturing company based out of Irving, Texas. While at Bioworld, she interacted daily with production teams overseas and assisted in managing accounts for Walmart.

Galaviz is currently pursuing a graduate degree from Texas A&M University at Commerce. When not in class or at work, she freelances for local fashion shows and serves as an active member of DIFFA Dallas. Her time spent with the organization has given her the opportunity to work alongside talented individuals, while supporting a cause dear to her. She is thankful for the DIFFA Dallas Young Professional Program with providing her a creative outlet to express her skills and hopes her efforts continue to impact the organization and community in a positive way.

Jenifer Strauss likes to say that the road to success is paved with candy and guarded by unicorns. Anyone who meets this multi-talented event planning, marketing and public relations professional knows that she loves what she does and brings a spirit of compassion and a sense of humor as big as Texas to anything and everything she does. For more than two decades she and her dynamic team have successfully launched brands and products in markets throughout the U.S. She is experienced in conceptualizing, creating, and implementing innovative strategies for a broad range of clients including culinary, beauty, retail, lifestyle, business, and real estate, among others.

Yet between all the champagne-fueled launch parties, 15hour days, Wifi-enabled flights to and from her Dallas and Los Angeles offices, Jenifer makes sure she has time to give back to the community. Serving on boards and raising funds for a variety of important causes, she devotes many hours to not just support but help these organizations flourish.Her family instilled the belief that giving back and being an active part of the community is a privilege that shouldn’t be taken lightly, so when she takes on a philanthropic role of any kind it’s because she believes in everything for which the organization stands. This is why she’s so devoted to DIFFA Dallas. Her history with the organization began more than 15 years ago when her family was a sponsor, but she knew she wanted to do more. During the more than 15 years she’s been involved with DIFFA, she’s transitioned from being an event sponsor to becoming the PR partner that helps the nonprofit tell its story to the world, as well as help find sponsors and work with the amazing Board of Directors. Along the way, she made lifelong friends through her involvement with DIFFA Dallas, but nothing compares to the countless lives and success stories that have touched her as a result of the many great services and organization DIFFA helps within the community.

LEGACY OF LOVE AWARD

Clint Bradley

Born and raised in Granbury Texas, Clint Bradley, is a true North Texan at heart.

After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin, Clint returned home to DFW to work in his family’s businesses. Today he manages the family insurance agency as well as his commercial real estate interests in Ft. Worth.

Prior to his involvement with DIFFA/Dallas, Clint served on the Board of Trustees of AIDS Resources of Rural Texas (ARRT) providing much needed assistance for those impacted by HIV/AIDS in thirty-four rural counties west of Fort Worth. Of his sixteen years of service with ARRT, he served eight as Board Chair.

Clint first attended and fell in love with DIFFA/Dallas Collection in 2001 following the loss of his partner Tom. He supported the organization as a patron for a decade before joining the DIFFA/ Dallas Board of Trustees in 2011. In his six years of service on the Board, Clint served three terms as Board Chair and served his last term chairing House of DIFFA – Circo Rouge. When asked about his experience with DIFFA/Dallas he said “I am grateful for my time working with so may generous and talented people in serving the men, women and children impacted by HIV/AIDS. I have been inspired and encouraged by the growth of support of those in North Texas.”

Dr. Patrick Gibson Dr. Gibson was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He went to Texas A&M University for undergraduate and then to Baylor College of Medicine for Medical School. During his medical training in Houston in the early 1990’s, he saw the devastating effects that HIV/AIDS had on patients, families and the community as a whole.

Dr. Gibson has been involved with numerous HIV/AIDS organizations including serving on the Board of Directors for the Center for AIDS in Houston and an advisory committee for Legacy Community Health Services in Houston. He has been an active supporter of DIFFA for the last several years and strongly believes in their mission of providing funding for the North Texas AIDS Service Organizations.

Verona Martinez

Verona Martinez, a Puerto Rican native has been interested in changing lives with beauty since her childhood. Her first client was her mother, the most important role model and muse of her life. Since childhood, Verona was incredibly involved with her mother’s beauty decisions and most of the time with great results. For this reason, her mother helped her start in the fashion industry where at the age of 19.

Two years later, Verona moved her operations to San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico. One of her greatest accomplishments was when one of the most important hotels in Puerto Rico asked her to open up a store on their first floor. This store was incredibly successful and from there on Verona opened other locations including SOHO in NY, Argentina, Panama and Venezuela. With her growth in popularity, After 10 successful years in the fashion industry, Verona was looking for something different, for that reason she decided to sell Verona Privé and take some time to expand her imagination into another world. In 2012, after some inspirational traveling, Verona Privé opened what is today Verona Privé Maison, a company dedicated to create beauty for the home.

Due to this unimaginable success, she has dedicated lots of her time to give back to great charities where she finds it’s most needed.

For this reason, from the beginning she has donated everything she can to DIFFA, believing strongly that a cure can be found and a better future must be given to all.

David Sutherland

“It all began one night with a few good martinis, great conversation, and an even better concept,” says David Sutherland, CEO of David Sutherland Inc., when referring to how the Sutherland® brand came to be one of the most iconic outdoor furniture companies in the industry. “My best friend and internationally-acclaimed furniture designer John Hutton and I sat outside for hours discussing ways we could be successful with a new approach to outdoor furniture and outdoor living.”

Rewind to a few years before that, when David Sutherland’s showroom ownership career began in 1977 in Houston, Texas with one showroom operation. Soon after showrooms in Dallas and Houston proved successful, David began to travel the world, realizing how little good quality furnishings of a certain type of furniture existed – the outdoors.

Today, Sutherland has over 30 branded collections in nearly 40 showrooms worldwide, and Perennials is known internationally for its color, hand and performance capabilities. David Sutherland Inc., parent company of both Sutherland and Perennials, is located in Dallas, Texas. David and Ann Sutherland live in Dallas as well and are both active members of the local arts and design community.

David was one of the founders of the Dallas chapter of DIFFA back in 1984, and was on the executive board for 10 years. David was instrumental in the implementation of the denim jacket program, an initiative for which DIFFA has become well known. He personally owns several of those jackets by different designers from over the years, including Christian Lacroix, Keith Haring, and others.

Burgers & Burgundy

The annual Burgers and Burgundy event was held on Friday, October 7, 2016 on the Ron Kirk pedestrian bridge. Themed, “DIFFA-cella”, the event featured the usual gourmet sliders prepared by DFW celebrity chefs, bands and art activities throughout the event. Chefs who participated in the event included: John Tesar, Blaine Staniford, Jermaine Brown, Julia Pearl, Casey Thompson, Brian Luscher, David Fingerman, Sharon Van Meter, Jacob Williamson, Rodman Shields, and Terry Cook. Bands that performed during the event included: “The Please, Please Me” and “Repel the Robot”. During the event, DIFFA/Dallas presented the 2017 House of DIFFA Style Council Ambassadors. The Honorary Chairman for the event was Simona Beal and the presenting sponsor was Chubb Insurance. Special thanks to John Tesar and Terri Provencal for coordinating the celebrity chefs for the event. DIFFA/Dallas board member, Aileen Roach, served as Chair of the event.

Wreath Collection

The annual Wreath Collection was held on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at Fashion Industry Gallery in downtown Dallas. Over 100 custom made wreaths were on display and were auctioned off during the event. The event hosts included: Ferrell Drum, John Erdos, Ralph Randall and Morgan Cox. Nespresso provided a holiday themed espresso station and III Forks provided the catering. Additional support was provided by NorthPark Center, Bug Light, Ben E. Keith, Delivery Limited, Toni Rivard, and Simply Elegant Dallas. The event was chaired by DIFFA/Dallas Board of Trustees member, Warren Wetzel.

THE JACKETS In collaboration with the design industries, DIFFA/Dallas partnered with new and renowned designers to create a unique item to help raise funds for those living with or affected by HIV/AIDS. This is how the iconic DIFFA/ Dallas denim jacket was started.

Donated by Levi Strauss, denim jackets were provided to designers to construct a one-of-a-kind jacket with only one stipulation; the original denim jacket had to be part of the design. As trends come and go, DIFFA/ Dallas retired the denim in 2012 and transitioned to a more modern jacket by introducing the Smoking Jacket Collection, paying tribute to the late designer, Yves Saint Laurent. It was at this time, DIFFA/Dallas allowed designers to have complete creative control and design unique tailored jackets or pull pieces straight off the runway.

Throughout the years, we have been honored to receive jackets donated from some of the most exclusive designers in the world including Saint Laurent, Jean Paul Gaultier, Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney, Versace, Escada, Altuzarra, Christian LaCroix, Oscar de la Renta and more.

This year, you will find some spectacular creations by up and coming designers, as well as world-renowned designers. Many of these elaborate pieces will become collector’s items and conversational pieces for years to come. We’d like to give a special thanks to Neiman Marcus for their collaboration in helping us curate 55 jackets this season. Through these donations and partnerships with the fashion and design industries, we have been even more powerful in our fight against HIV/AIDS.
