DIFFA/DALLAS BOARD CHAIR

LEE BORCHERT Good evening to all. It is my pleasure to welcome everyone to HOUSE OF DIFFA: FUTURO.

a

For more than 29 years, HOUSE OF DIFFA has focused on and committed to raising funds for many local AIDS Service Organizations. Without your generosity, our mission would not be possible. To our corporate and individual sponsors, thank you for your continued support and dedication. Year after year your contributions truly allow us to better the lives of many throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth area. It is a shining example that through philanthropy, passion and love, we can truly make DIFFArence. As we work toward the future of zero new infections, zero stigma and zero deaths from HIV/AIDS, we pay tribute to and honor those who have dedicated their time and talents to our cause. Thank you to all past Boards of Directors, Board Chairs and HOD Chairs for your passion and commitment to DIFFA Dallas. Our history is rich and strong because of your efforts.

To the 2019 Style Council Ambassadors, Board of Directors, Twana Collins, Chapter Administrator, DIFFA Young Professionals and countless volunteers, thank you for your time, energy and passion for this organization. Thank you to Brian Brothers and Planet Productions, Rhonda Sargent Chambers, Densil Adams and Jeffrey Horn for being an integral part of DIFFA/Dallas through your talents, creative energy, unwavering dedication and friendship. And to Tim Garippa, HOD Chair, thank you for your focus, passion, commitment and friendship. Your heart will always be in the right place. A heartfelt thank you to my partner, family, numerous friends, many of whom are here tonight, and business associates for your unconditional love, extreme generosity and support of me and of DIFFA. With this my sixth and final year, I express my love for this organization, the mission it represents, the compassion and gratitude of the people DIFFA/Dallas supports and the pure joy that comes from having served on the board. For this, I am and will remain eternally grateful. May we all continue to work together for the future! Warmest regards, Lee Borchert DIFFA/DALLAS Board Chair 12

HOUSE OF DIFFA EVENT CHAIR

TIMOTHY GARIPPA

It has been an honor to serve as the House of DIFFA chair this year. This event could not happen without everyone on the board, style council ambassadors, and hundreds of volunteers that put in so much energy to make a one of a kind experience. Thanks to all of you that have made this year and this House of DIFFA a success! Tonight we celebrate the progress we have made in fighting HIV/AIDS. Since the 80s, we have seen significant advancements in education and medicine that are foreshadowing what some initially thought wasn’t possible: an end to HIV/AIDS. Zero Deaths, Zero New Infections, and Zero Stigma is coming in the near future and your attendance at House of DIFFA is helping us get there. Thank you for your generous support of DIFFA/Dallas! Lastly, I’d like to give special thanks to family and friends for your support, and to Lee Borchert who has been a fantastic partner this year as DIFFA/Dallas Board Chair. Lee has served the organization with passion throughout his term and I want to recognize him for his dedicated service. Now, on to FUTURO…enjoy the show!! Yours truly, Timothy Garippa House of DIFFA FUTURO Chair

FORMS THE MANY WAYS ART IS TAKING SHAPE AT FORTY FIVE TEN

When Kristen Cole took the helm as President and Chief Creative Officer of the luxury boutique, one of her first objectives was to emphasize the natural connections between art, design, and fashion. “I wanted to highlight the relationship because fashion and art are so central to the distinct nature of Forty Five Ten,” she says. A year later, it’s no wonder Cole is achieving her mission. But what is surprising are the myriad ways she has woven art into the brand through different expressions.

ART FOR SALE

ART FOR COMMERCE While fine artists frequently collaborate on designer collections, it’s not often they contribute to the retail space itself. However, Cole and her team have commissioned elements that blur the line between public art and commercial display. Case in point: Forty Five Ten’s brand-new location in Hudson Yards boasts a glass-brick storefront and architectural details by renowned artist Daniel Arsham’s firm Snarkitecture. New York artist Greg Bogin—who partnered with the brand on its Dallas Art Fair pop-up last year—was brought on to create curved, sculptural representations of his work for shoe and handbag displays. On the horizon: an exclusive collaboration with Katie Stout to be displayed on custom fixtures she’s made for the occasion. “It’s not always easy to convince artists to bring their work into commercial spaces,” says Cole. “But with our relationships and track record, we’ve proven we can do it right.”

ART FOR SCALE Instead of shooting in studio or in a remote location, Cole and her creative team shoot their seasonal campaigns in, around, and sometimes on top of art. From inside an art collector’s personal home to a non-profit art space to a traditional gallery—the locations vary (and matter) almost as much as the looks photographed in them. The recent spring campaign brought the team inside New York’s Marlborough Gallery. Up next? Elvis’s former Beverly Hills home-turned-design-showroom.

READ ON Find more art, style, and culture at 1530main.com

Within Forty Five Ten, 4510/SIX is the perfect platform for a roster of emerging artists and designers for the home. In its selection curated by Cole, you’ll find ceramic arts, prints, and sculptural pieces at attainable price points. Among the standouts: prismatic-glazed porcelain bowls from Prattalum Minh Singer, handmade ceramic furniture from Venezuelan-born artist Reinaldo Sanguino, and graphic posters by writer-artist Miranda July.

ART FOR ART Incorporating art into the retail experience is part of Forty Five Ten’s brick-and-mortar identity, so alongside Prada and Dries Van Noten you’ll find work by Jose Dávila, Ruven Afanador, and Sterling Ruby (a downtown Dallas window installation earlier this year coincided with the artist’s solo show at Nasher Sculpture Center). Also downtown, the café No Aloha was brought to life by a commissioned floor-to-ceiling, Technicolor tropical dream by Brooklyn-based Katherine Bernhardt. Artist Al Freeman will join the lineup of contributors this spring with her “soft sculptures,” pleather-stuffed household objects that wilt with an almost comic effect. Think lava lamps, Bic lighters, beer cans, and ATMs.

DIFFA/DALLAS AWARDS

LEGACY OF LOVE AWARD FERREL DRUM Thank you DIFFA, I am humbled and stunned by your gracious recognition. When Lee Borchert contacted me earlier this month to inform me of this recognition, I was moved to silence. I became reflective because of my personal history and experiences with the DIFFA family. Our conversation caused me to reflect on my early experiences coming out. I remembered my first experiences coming out as a “Mature Gay Man”. Emotionally feelings rushed through my head and heart remembering what was occurring in my personal life at that time. Coming out, my parents dealt me with their religious fear that was projected to me as anger. Remembering them coming to my office unannounced to read a devasting letter declaring me extricated, disowned from my family of birth. This was painful and dramatic, but there were many gifts in my horizon. One was the introduction to DIFFA/Dallas. These beautiful people employ a wide spectrum of mediums to offer the City of Dallas a gala that celebrates life’s endless array of diversities. They embrace diversity boldly. Resulting from sharing their creative skills, DIFFA/Dallas is capable of distributing significant financial support and love to many disenfranchised men/women suffering with HIV/AIDS. This love, these artful expressions, these selfless acts allowed me to look beyond my parent’s denial. These incredible people truly demonstrated to me love and its “Legacy”. The legacy of continually demonstrating lavish amounts of love to a segment of our society who are in the need of witnessing love in action. Thank you for being a change agent in my life and for this amazing award.

COLLECTION 2019

THE JACKETS In collaboration with the design industries, DIFFA/Dallas partnered with new and renowned designers creating unique pieces to raise funds for those living with or affected by HIV/AIDS. Donated by Levi Strauss and Company, denim jackets were provided to designers to construct one of-a-kind pieces when Collection began. As trends come and go, DIFFA/Dallas retired the denim in 2012 and transitioned to a more modern jacket by introducing the Smoking Jacket Collection, paying tribute to the late designer, Yves Saint Laurent. Throughout the years, we have been honored to receive jackets donated from some of the most exclusive designers in the world. This year, you will find spectacular creations by up and coming and world-renowned designers.

To the 2019 DIFFA/Dallas Jacket Collection Designers and Contributors,

COLLECTION 2019

RONAK ASSADI On behalf of DIFFA/Dallas, thank you for your contributions to this year’s jacket collection. We could not do this without you! What started as a simple jean jacket auction has transformed into something so much more, and we attribute that to you. We have a beautiful collection this year with an eclectic array of jackets, blazers, capes, denim, and more from global fashion houses to up-and-coming local talent. A simple blazer can provide funding for a patient to receive life-saving medication, access to a psychologist, or send a child to summer camp with other HIV impacted children. Serving as the Jacket Curator this year has been an absolute honor, and I thank you all again from the bottom of my heart. Your creativity astounds me and your generosity is unmatched. Thank you all and enjoy the show! Ronak Assadi 2019 DIFFA/Dallas Jacket Curator

DIFFA NATIONAL Philanthropists and Fashion Lovers, DIFFA is thrilled to be celebrating one of the most anticipated events on the Dallas social calendar – HOUSE OF DIFFA: FUTUR0 all in support of making a DIFFArence in the lives of those impacted by HIV/AIDS. This year signifies 35 years of DIFFA uniting with the design community to create inspiring and innovative events that raise money for a worthy cause. We can’t express enough how much we appreciate the generosity of supporters like you—individuals, companies and fashion leaders—who donate their time and talents to support our mission to fight HIV/AIDS. The funds we raise tonight will help make grants to AIDS Service Organizations who provide education, prevention services, care and support to those impacted by HIV. Last year, DIFFA distributed more than $1 million dollars in grants helping thousands of individuals in North Texas and throughout the country. A Texas-sized THANK YOU to the dedicated members of DIFFA Dallas, the Board of Trustees, Style Council, volunteers, and staff for your dedication and fundraising efforts! AND thanks to all DIFFA Dallas supporters for your generosity, being a part of House of DIFFA, and most importantly, helping us to get closer an AIDS-free generation - we simply couldn’t do this without you! Sending congratulations on your successes from DIFFA National’s Board, staff & volunteers! Dawn Roberson Executive Director, DIFFA

2019 DIFFA/DALLAS SPOTLIGHT

SPOTLIGHT TRISTAN TANNER DIFFA/Dallas Young Professionals It is quite the honor to be spotlighted in this year’s House of DIFFA: Futuro book. I have only been a part of the DIFFA/Dallas YP program for under a year, and I have never felt more fulfilled. It has been a privilege to work with such incredible people, all doing everything to make DIFFA/Dallas successful so that they can make a positive impact in the community….and I have taken so much pride in being a small piece of that. Since day one, signing up at one of the YP membership drives, I have tried to lend my time, talent and perspective to this organization that I wholeheartedly believe in. I’ve been able to do so much, from supporting social media, photography, directing the board shoot and even doing drag at Wreath. It’s been amazing to work with the amazing creative team of DIFFA/Dallas. I must send out my appreciation to Erik Karvonen, Meagan Camp, and Brittanie Buchanan Oleniczak, who have all been such amazing mentors. I am honored to have worked alongside them. Again, thank you for this honor and I hope this is only the beginning. Tristan grew up in Louisiana, went to college in Mississippi for graphic design and is now continuing his Southern tour through Dallas where he is now the Marketing Director for Site Selection Group. Tristan also works on the side as a chalk illustrator, professional mascot for FC Dallas and is building up an interior design blog called Something Lane. He enjoys his time with friends, having a cocktail or at the park with his rescue pup, Norman. 77

Bringing together celebrated chefs near and far, we are able to take patrons on a culinary journey through savory burgers and equally as delicious wine. We would especially like to thank The Joule for providing us such a spectacular space to graze under the stars. Another very special thank you to Terry Provencal of PATRON Magazine and Chef John Tesar of Knife Dallas in continuing their support of curating the Burgers & Burgundy experience. Please join all of us October 5, 2019 to celebrate the 11 Year Anniversary of Burgers & Burgundy back at The Eyeball.

WREATH COLLECTION

On Thursday, November 15, 2018 DIFFA/Dallas kicked off the holiday season with its 23rd annual Holiday Wreath Collection featuring a “Marché de Noel,” a French Christmas market-themed event organized by co-chairs Karena Chisolm and Meagan Camp. There’s no need to fly to Paris! Guests strolled the “ChampsÉlysées” right in Downtown Dallas. Taking place at Fashion Industry Gallery, DIFFA/Dallas patrons mingled and toasted to the season amongst dozens of one-of-a-kind wreaths designed by Goulla Angelides, Dan & Joseph, Brian Chaffin, Grange Hall, Adele Home and Robyn Menter Design Associates to name a few. AIDS service organizations and the recently announced DIFFA/Dallas Style Council Ambassadors participated by designing specialty wreaths for the auction. The evening featured French-inspired sweets and treats by La Madeleine, Savor Macarons, Whisk Crêpes, and Rush Patisserie. Entertainment was provided by Dallas String Quartet Electric. Sponsors for the event include The Container Store (Title Sponsor), Frontgate at Legacy West, Southwest Funding, LP, Dallas Light and Sound, and Impeccable Brut.
