SRC voting opens today tomorrow ANÉ VAN ZYL

S

tembus are breaking their own rules when it comes to appointing this year’s SRC. Rules in the student constitution regarding communication with students have been sidestepped, as well as the correct procedure for nominations. According to the constitution, the nomination period must last for 10 calendar days. However, the nomination process for the 2017/2018 elections opened on 30 January and closed on 6 February. “This was not a new election, therefore the nomination period mentioned does not apply. “This is the same election that was started in the third term last year and the reopening was an extension of the nomination period,” said election convenor Dylan Swigelaar. Furthermore, information

about candidates was not released as the constitution requires. The constitution states that the names, manifestos and experience of candidates has to be sent to students, as well as the procedure surrounding complaints. Thus far only one of these documents has been sent to students. When asked to comment on this, Swigelaar stated that he had to be selective about how many emails he sends out because he is not allowed to “spam students” with emails about the election. Swigelaar added that the relevant information could be found on the candidate posters around campus, as well as on social media. However, no information about their experiences is on the posters. The constitution further states that the election convenor must inform all students of the voting day, the way in which votes will be cast, as well as the date, time and place of the public

presentation meeting. When questioned about when these details will be sent to students, Swigelaar said that information would be communicated in a mass email the following day. Yesterday all students received an email with a caucus roster for the previous week. “The reason for the delay in the second mass email was because changes had to be made to the voting pool due to the timing of the election,” said Swigelaar. The constitution also requires that the information be made available electronically, on a single website, to all students before the start of the election. The website doesn’t currently exist. Voting was set to commence today, but has been postponed until Thursday. Swigelaar explained that the reason for the postponement was IT difficulties.

“IT needed an extra day to get the online voting ready,” he said. Voting will now open tomorrow, and the SRC will be announced on Tuesday. Circuses Every day of last week caucuses took place where students posed questions to candidates. In response to a question about communication channels, candidate Darrian Hoffeldt responded by calling Tonia Overmeyer, the Student Dean, “a wallflower” who “does nothing for students”. Romek Sadowski, in response to a question about fees, suggested the university gets rid of merit bursaries to free up funds. Furthermore, he mentioned that the convocation should be prevented from overturning the language policy. He also added that management is scared of students, and that it is the responsibility

of management to schedule meetings with students to sort out issues. Kamva Somdyala commented on residence policies calling it “exclusive” and saying it doesn’t consider socio-economic factors. Bevin Davids also spoke about fees, saying there are many ways to find funding, if students go to the right place. He claimed that he would be a bridge between students and financial help. Some candidates mentioned the necessity of student parliament, and the need for the SRC to be held accountable, while other candidates refused to answer questions or hardly said a word. At the caucuses three of the candidates, Maxwell Mlangeni, Sadowski and Somdyala announced that they will be standing for chairperson. According to Swigelaar the portfolios of the SRC members, as well as a chairperson, is elected internally.
