Actions of Law Clinic results in Durbanville Wine’s seeing disableds’ rights in new light
Disabled student’s rights are in SU Law Clinic’s sights NICHOLAS CARROLL
E
quality Court proceedings launched on behalf of Hendri Herbst by the Stellenbosch University Law Clinic have ended in a settlement being reached with Durbanville Hills winery. The winery has admitted to discriminating against the Paralympian in 2014 when its restaurant denied him access as he was accompanied by his guide dog. Herbst, a Stellenbosch University (SU) student and visually impaired Paralympic swimmer, was prevented from entering the restaurant and tasting facility of Durbanville Hills along with his family due to the presence of Stan, his guide dog. This was as a result of the fa-
cility’s policy prohibiting dogs. In response to this, Herbst firstly laid a complaint with the South African Human Rights Commission which, after investigating, stated it was “of the opinion that the [winery had] taken reasonable steps to address, resolve and remedy [his] complaint, and therefore accordingly [deemed his] complaint resolved”. Unsatisfied with this re-

sponse, Herbst approached the Law Clinic which instituted proceedings in the Euality Court on the basis that he had been unfairly discriminated against. According to Monja PosthumusMeyjes, the attorney at the Law Clinic who conducted the case, Durbanville Hills firstly maintained that no such discrimination had taken place, and thus “the settlement [came] as quite a surprise”. The settlement agreement was made an order of the Equality Court on 26 September 2018, this agreement stipulating that Durbanville Hills will issue an unconditional public apology to Herbst and ensure that all its staff engage in sensitivity training from the Guide Dog Association. Posthumus-Meyjes drew attention to this, saying the Law Clinic and Herbst “are very happy that [the winery] included that they… unconditionally apologise and accept that there was discrimination against him” Further, the winery will compensate Herbst for the incident to the tune of R50 000, and donate another R50 000 to the Guide Dog Association for the purpose of raising awareness regarding the use of guide dogs by visually impaired persons.
Posthumus-Meyjes stated that although the winery “settled on all the terms that [Herbst] asked for… it would have been phenomenal if [the case] had been able to set precedent”. Nonthe-less, she expressed that “companies are hopefully going to… take note that there is a financial liability for discriminating against people”. Looking beyond the Law Clinic’s recent success with Herbst’s case, Posthumus-Meyjes said that legislation for persons with disabilities “hasn’t quite evolved in the same sense that legislation for gender discrimination and race discrimination has evolved”. South Africa has signed and ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and Posthumus-Meyjes feels that it is very disappointing that
Posthumus-Meyjes emphatically stated that “if people with disabilities find that their rights are being discriminated against, they are very welcome to contact [the Law Clinic] and come and have a consultation with us. We are very proud of the work that we are doing on behalf of persons with disabilities, and this is one of the focus points at the Clinic – to drive disability rights and to make sure that the rights of persons with disabilities develop and are safe guarded.”
“We still don’t have a piece of legislation that reflects day to day life of persons with disability to ensure protection for them” Considering this ongoing fight for the recognition of the rights of person with disabilities,

PAW society celebrates its 70th Birthday (in dog years, that is)
ZOE HUMAN
Chances are, if you have ever seen a dog on Victoria Street, trailing no more than 3m behind is a bright-eyed student who’s closest encounter with an animal is the rats outside Boho’s. If you have never seen this student, chances are it’s you. On 27 September, the Promoting Animal Welfare (PAW) society celebrated its 10th birthday anniversary by partnering with the Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch (AWSS) for an event held at the shelter just outside of Stellenbosch. The event was made open to the public and included cupcakes, party hats, a photo booth and many, upon many puppy kisses. PAW is a student led nonprofit organization. When speaking with Monique Gerber, a BComm Mathematical Sciences student and 2019 Chair of PAW, Gerber said that the society’s focus is “not just dogs and cats”. The society is financially supported by the yearly R150 membership fee and come year’s end the accumulated funds are donated to various animal rescue organisations. Such organisations include: Lucky

SPOILT PUPPIES AND WALKS IN THE VINEYARD The PAW society members and excited students celebrate PAW’s success by volinteering at the AWSS. Lucy, Eagle Encounters and Oscar’s Ark. AWSS, however, “is one of our big partners” says Gerber. Marisa Pienaar, a house committee member at Metanoia Residence and event attendee, said “people are not always aware of the environment around them. Students aren’t really forced to think that much about animals.” She believes that students can play a far
larger role in making a meaningful difference in the lives of animals. Pienaar suggests that people should just attend an event and hear what they can do to better the lives of these animals, even if that’s just by taking one dog for its daily walk through the vineyards opposite the shelter. When speaking with Lorna Hughes, the head manager of AWSS, on how
Maties can get involved she had this to say: “the nice thing is that if you just need a break from your studies you can pop down and walk dogs anywhere between 10am and 3pm, 7 days a week”. One can get involved by raising funds or networking dogs. Networking is when “you come down and pick a dog and make it your project to adopt out, so you would
perhaps network it on your Facebook page, send it to all your mates, your family and then they could come to us to adopt the dogs” says Hughes. Another way one can get involved is through the fostering of puppies. AWSS holds over 140 dogs and between 80 and 90 cats, and space is limited, especially for small puppies. Students with accommodation allowing animals are encouraged to consider the possibility of fostering. Fostering can last anywhere between 2 weeks and a month. It involves feeding 3 times a day, making sure they go out and play and then bringing the puppy back to the AWSS for its vaccines. AWSS takes in dogs found predominantly around the Stellenbosch area. In the event you come across an individual attempting to sell animals on the street, Hughes insists you first contact the Stellenbosch law enforcement (021 808 8890) and immediately after that the AWSS emergency number (071 169 9922). uide dogs are trained to lead the blind around obstaclesthis is known to many, but emotional support animals (ESA) might be a new concept to some. An ESA is a companion that is advised by a therapist, psychologist or other medical professional to help deal with emotional, physical or mental disabilities. They have proven to be extremely beneficial to people suffering from depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and panic attacks. ESAs are typically dogs or cats, but are not necessarily limited to these. ESAs are not to be confused with guide dogs, however. Guide dogs require up to fourteen months of training from the age of eight weeks, and are working dogs, therefore being
different to ESAs. Helene Oosthuizen is a fourth year Fine Arts student with an emotional support dog called Lapis. Helene and Lapis have been together for five months, and Helene alone has been house and etiquette training Lapis, taking the time and effort do so. Helene says her commitment to Lapis “helps her concentrate” both in class and out, learning to prioritise another’s needs before her own. Lapis makes her less uncomfortable in social interactions and helps prevent loneliness. When asked if Helene had experienceThere is no definitive answer on how or what qualifies anybody to have an ESA other than it must be ‘prescribed’ or deemed appropriate by a medical professional for the person’s particular circumstance. Lawfully in South
Africa ESAs are not recognised in comparison to other countries such as the US. This means that there are no specialised laws for ESAs specifically and, for example, one would not be recognised in court as a valid reason for taking your dog in a ‘no pets allowed’ area. Helene had to get permission from her faculty to allow the dog to come to class with her by showing the proof of Lapis being her ESA from her therapist. Lapis is also currently not allowed in certain campus buildings such as the Neelsie. The dog must be well socialised for obvious reasons which is entirely up to the owner of the ESA.

Venustia’s Pink Day KATHRYN VAN DEN BERG
Venustia Ladies PSO will, for the tenth year, be raising awareness and funds to bring attention to breast cancer this October. The PSO not only encourages all Maties to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness, but also implores students to aid them in keeping up with their 10 year tradition of collecting and donating to CANSA and the Pink Drive Although usually a week-long event, Venustia has changed their initiative from Breast Cancer Awareness Week to a day-long campaign on October 11, called ‘Pink Day’. Pink boxes will be placed in the Neeslie on the 11th between 12:00 and 14:00, in which students are encouraged to donate money for the campaign. Students are encouraged to draw on or kiss a poster using pink lipstick at a table set up by Venustia in the Neelsie. Through making a mark students can see the amount of people that support the fight against
breast cancer. At the end of the day Venustia HK will collect and count the donations. All funds raised will go to CANSA and the Pink Drive. Since the creation of this PSO in 2008, Breast Cancer Awareness has been a priority for the women of Venustia. Aneri De Clerk, the viceprim of Venustia and organizer of Pink Day, said that “all Maties on campus are invited to wear anything pink to support the fighters, admire the survivors and honour the ones we’ve lost to Breast Cancer”. On top of this, Maties can “post pictures wearing something pink using the hashtag #VenustiaPinkDay to support the campaign” said Helené Morkel, Prim of Venustia. Although the PSO has not set a goal for the amount received through donations, Morkel has confidence that Maties will support this initiative. She said that “through an act as small as donating some money, [students] will have the biggest impact on breast cancer prevention for generations to come”.

cattered with locks of hair, and highlighted with dye of every colour, the Rooiplein was clearly the host of the Shaveathon organized by CANSA along with Groomed Academy. Friday 28 September saw Maties sitting excitedly on chairs in the sun, with volunteers and professionals alike holding hair dye and scissors behind them. Eric Way Lovemore, the creative director of Groomed Academy, studied barbering at EDGE Hair&Barber Academy, and decided to “get students involved in this
charity drive” at Stellenbosch. Although this was the Academy’s first time participating in a Shaveathon, Lovemore said that “we [the academy] have been involved with raising funds for Cheetah Outreach” and therefore, this “whole experience was thoroughly enjoyed by the team”. Lovemore believes that Shaveathons are successful as a method in cancer awareness. He said that “it [Shavethons] certainly raises awareness in the community by holding these fun Shaveathons.
People’s participation is key to success, whether they shave their whole head or just have colours sprayed through their hair.” When asked about how the academy got involved with CANSA, Lovermore stated that Groomed Academy was approached by the Golden Key Society at SU, who gave them the opportunity to participate in the Shaveathon. Lovemore’s sentiments about the success of Shaveathons are supported by Sharon Fransman, a CANSA representative who was present at the event. When asked what the point of Shaveathons are, Fransman said that “Shaveathons offer people the opportunity to donate their hair to make wigs for patients who have lost theirs”. She also said that “Shaveathons are very successful in raising awareness… it shows our support to cancer survivors who lost all their hair in treatment.” Contacted every year by the Golden Key Society at SU, CANSA has been participating in Shaveathons for 15 years. On top of researching, educating and supporting cancer patients and families/friends, CANSA also trains volunteers to participate in Shaveathons. Fransman expressed her appreciation for CANSA and the Shaveathons which support it by saying that “up to today I am not sorry [that I am a representative of CANSA and Shaveathons]. Just putting a smile on someone’s face makes my day.”
Stias collaborates with global institutes CARLA VISAGIE
The Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Studies (STIAS) has yet again proven itself as a leading research establishment. In September 2018 they were invited to be the first research institute in the Southern Hemisphere to collaborate with an elite international research institute, known as The Some Institutes for Advanced studies (SIAS) consortium. STIAS was founded by Stellenbosch University (SU) in 1999, but it developed into an independent research establishment and is now governed by its own board of directors. Although STIAS is now independent from SU, they signed a lease agreement with SU in 2014, which enabled the university to use their facilities. Professor Hendrik Geyer, Director of STIAS, said in a media release on 11 September, “The invitation is a clear signal that international Institutes for Advanced Study are increasingly engaging with the African academic and research world.” “We have established good relationships over time with individual institutes to the extent that some have already accommodated in their own programmes. Being part of the collaboration will give us the chance to explore the possibilities inherent in this programme, along with other aspects of the STIAS offering. There is much to be explored,” said Geyer. Geyer elaborated by saying that the success of his own studies can be ascribed in large part to the total STIAS experience – a space in which

STIAS is not only linked to the university through their facilities, but also through the host of their academic programmes. In 2018 STIAS hosted a total of 10 public lectures throughout the year. The last lecture of the STIAS lecture series was presented on Tuesday 25 September in the Adam Small theatre, and was about the key to fixing broken patterns of urban development. According to the STIAS webpage, the study seeks to “understand and unpack the deep complexities of the South African university against the background of global discussions on the changing role of the university”. The webpage emphasizes the importance of the project by stating “The University and society of South Africa is faced with an urgent
societal challenge. It would therefore be important for projects to be responsive to a particular aspect of the challenge in higher education, and to propose solutions to address that challenge.” “This is a wonderful initiative, an opportunity to clarify the effort of deep transformation of the university in its epistemological and ontological underpinning in order to realise a truly diverse university that is designed to nurture a critical citizenry. We will support this any way we can,” said professor Siphamandla Zondi from the University of Pretoria on the theme of University and Society on the STIAS webpage. Desmond Smith, Chairman of the Board of Directors, ascribes the success of STIAS to its “supporters and benefactors, and the people who make up the STIAS family.”

TB or not TB? On Thurday the 4th, the Stellenbosch University Library Auditorium, hosted Professor Gerard Walzl who enthusiastically presented his ten-year spanning research project. The lecture marks the fourth of the university's ‘100 Years’ lecture series and forms part of the twenty eighth year since the forum's beginning. Experts in multiple fields are provided with the forum's platform to inform both staff and students on topics outside of their respective faculties. In the lecture: "When bacteria go undercover, why not ask the host?", the esteemed professor outlined his work on the TB pandemic. Tuberculosis is caused by a mycobacterium which mainly targets and infects the lungs. This disease, though theoretically difficult to transmit, is one of South Africa's leading causes of death. Walzl elaborated on how he has made new

headway in answering numerous infamous unknowns. He aims to find innovative ways to prevent the onset of active tuberculosis, as the disease is often very difficult to detect during the first year of exposure. Additionally, he is actively pursuing technological advances in the production of a portable, multi-propose device to simplify the diagnostic process and provide access to poorer and more rural communities. The nature of Walzl's research is still ongoing and upon the forum's end Walzl expressed both his excitement and his interest in returning to recommence the discussion, saying “I would love to be re-invited to answer these questions more accurately”. Professor Walzl has recently been awarded an additional five-year research grant to continue his work. - Montanna Essey

- Annerine Snyman

f a walk underneath the scenic trees in Victoria doesn’t give Maties enough reason to study here, Stellenbosch University (SU) has once again been ranked under the top universities in the world. SU was ranked between the top 301 and 350 universities by the Times Higher Education (THE) rankings. SU placed third best in South Africa, with only the University of Cape Town (156) and the University of the Witwaterstrand (201-250) placing higher. A total of 1258 universities across the world participated in the rankings. Prof Hester Klopper, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Strategy and

Dr Rehana Malgas-Enus, a lecturer and researcher in the Department of Chemistry and Polymer Science at Stellenbosch University (SU), received the National Research Foundation Excellence in Science Engagement Award on 26 September 2018. The award recognises researchers at South African universities and science councils who have made exceptional contributions to public engagement and public understanding of science over a sustained period. Among the previous recipients of this award is Prof. Lee Berger, noted for his leadership in the discovery of Homo Naledi. Malgas-Enus was honoured for the Stellenbosch University Chemistry Outreach Initiative (SUNCOI) which she established in 2013, as well as for her continued involvement in promoting science engagement through radio inserts she records for Radio Sonder Grense (RSG) and motivational talks she delivers to young girls to inspire scientific involvement. She completed her BSc and MSc degrees at the University of the Western Cape and obtained her PhD at SU in 2011. “I view myself as a researcher first and foremost, but embarking upon a project such as the Stellenbosch University Chemistry Outreach

Internationalisation, said that only 20% of universities worldwide participated in the rankings. SU’s ranking therefore distinguishes it as part of the top 1% of universities worldwide. The five criteria used for the rankings include teaching (learning environment), research (volume, income and reputation), citations (research influence), international outlook (staff, students and research) and industry income (knowledge transfer).According to Phil Baty, editor of THE, there is a gap for universal standards against which to measure the different universities of the world. “The goal of the results is to
give vital resources to students and their families as well as academics and university administrators and governments across the world. The rankings want to bring great insights into the strengths and shifting fortunes of individual-led universities,” Baty said. According to Dr Elmien Lesch, a psychology lecturer at SU, the academic success of SU can be ascribed to the internal relations on campus. “Those rankings have more to do with academic performance like research and areas we do research on, but personally I think the university’s success can be ascribed to the fact that SU attends to students and teaching too,” Lesch said.

DR MALGAS-ENUS promoting science engagement with her kits Initiative did not take anything away from that – if you are able to give back and do good, it is important to do so…I was grateful, because it means that my university management can see the contribution we are making” said Malgas-Enus. SUNCOI enables grade 10, 11 and 12 learners from across the Metropole South and Cape Winelands school districts to carry out the practicals that are compulsory for them to obtain their year marks. Due to a lack of resources the learners cannot do the experiments at their schools. SUNCOI allows learners to complete the experiments at the SU Chemistry Department’s laboratories. Besides Malgas-Enus, Jabu Lukhele, the Chemistry Department’s technical
officer, as well as several MSc and PhD students are involved with SUNCOI. The success that SUNCOI achieved with the initial schools was noted by subject advisors from the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), and the workbook that Malgas-Enus originally designed for the SUNCOI practicals is now being used by schools in the province. She then designed chemistry kits in collaboration with Kimix Chemicals that schools can buy from the company at a reduced price. The kit includes all the chemicals and equipment required by teachers to carry out the experiment five times. With such immense positive reactions to SUNCOI one can only expect great things from the initiative in the future.

Focus on five things before finals platforms before you sleep or during your study breaks. However, be aware of the ‘just for a moment’ syndrome. As most people know all too well, checking news headlines can lead to an entire afternoon of watching hilarious cat videos, tagging our friends in that’s-so-us memes and reading the latest who’s-dating-who gossip – procrastination at its A game.

e’re all guilty of having bad study habits, whether we’re aware of them or not. With the long dreaded final exams looming over us, it is time we evaluate exactly how to get rid of them. Or pick up a few new things to try.
1. Silence your social media The biggest distraction – social media. Turning off your social media for an entire week, let alone the entire exam duration, may not be realistic for a student. I mean, who could actually accomplish that? But it would be in your best interests to limit checking your
2. Fuel your body by staying active and eating well A car does not run on an empty tank, just like that your brain will not function well without adequate nutrition and exercise. Just 20 minutes of cardio can improve your memory. Whether you’re dancing, jogging or busting a sweat by walking, exercise will increase your energy level and reduce the effects of stress. You may be tempted to eat and drink foods with high levels of sugar, but the quick calories will ultimately leave you exhausted. Fuel your body with appropriate brain food: whole grains, fresh vegetables, and lean proteins. Final exams can be long, and you don’t want hunger or fatigue making you end your exam before you’re really finished – though I’m sure we would all want it to be over as soon as possible! 3. Start studying early to avoid cramming If you always start ahead of schedule, you’ll never be cramming the night before an exam. You’ll almost always perform better in doing so, and you’ll feel better prepared as the exam approaches.
Your studying will be more effective if you concentrate for a period of time, and then take short breaks. Distributing learning over time typically benefits long-term retention more than a short period and the last thing you want is your mind going blank mid-paper. 4. Avoid all-nighters and stay wellrested Pulling an all-nighter is one of the worst things you can do (short of accidentally sleeping through your final). Fatigued brains do not retain information, nor do they recall it well. All-nighters impair reasoning and memory for as long as four days. But that’s not all – you would then be forced to wake up earlier than expected, and that’s bad too. One of the best things you can do the night before an exam is to get a full eight hours of sleep. 5. Prioritize your studying over other less important tasks Some exams will be more difficult than others, some you may find easier to study for, while some may be worth more of your grades than others. Make sure to evaluate all of your exams to consider and determine all of the factors involved so you can study accordingly and ignore everything that doesn’t have anything to do with the fate of your future. Set your worries and nerves aside, and remember to stay on task, work hard, eat well, and make time to rest. Soon it will be over and you can begin the summer confident that your grades will reflect the work that you did all semester long.

Everything Dreads for students on campus
JADE KERCHHOFF
Everything Dreads is the name of an emerging business founded by second year BSc (Mathematical Sciences) student, Hamese Houston Thapelo, that renders the service of, yes, you guessed it, dreadlocks! Taught by a friend of his, Hamese has since mastered the skill of dreading, about which he has been passionate for as long as he can remember. It is this passion that has motivated Hamese and his business partner, Luthada Unarine Collen, to use their skills to offer a service to people with dreads, for whom there are very few places on or nearby campus that accommodate this specific hairstyle, especially at an affordable price. Although it has been pretty much
under wraps since its establishment sometime last semester, it is their influx of customers that encouraged them to dedicate more effort into marketing their business on a grander scale. Everything Dreads is thus a small, local business that is well on its way to becoming a household name on the lips of students around campus, given the size and prevalence of its target market. Hamese and Luthada offer their services as travelling hairstylists who will meet you at your location of choice to dread your hair or to lock your dreads for you at any length or thickness. Prices range from a minimum of R100 to R200 at most, which, given the ugly reality of student budgets, is beyond affordable! If you’re looking
to have your whole head of hair dreaded, it would cost R200, and if you want only the top or a part of your hair dreaded, it would cost R150. If you already have dreads, however, and merely need someone to lock the dreads at the roots after a significant amount of hair growth, you can expect to pay between R100 and R150 depending on whether a part of your head or whole head is dreaded. Everything Dreads prides themselves on being affordable and convenient, because if you’re suffering for beauty, you’re doing it wrong! To secure a booking, you can send them a direct message on their Instagram page @everythingdreads’, or on their number: 0724510210. Do not forget to spread the word to potential clients and relieve their dread with the news of Everything Dreads.
New Acapella Nationals on its way LAUREN WESLEY-SMITH
Just when you thought that Acapella was over, it’s back and bigger than ever. This year Stellenbosch will be hosting the first national Varsity Acapella Competition, replacing the ATKV National competition which died out after 2016. Based on a different model to the original Sêr, it aims to celebrate culture, diversity, South African identity, new boundaries, expression, and musical excellence. Due to the sudden withdrawal of CPUT, and TUKS refusing to send ensembles, only three universities will be competing this year: North West University, University of the Free State and Stellenbosch University. The event has been arranged at quite short notice due to late responses from the universities, but KUKO chairperson, Blaine Josephs, believes it better to push
ahead regardless in order to provide a platform and to create a foundation which may be built upon in future years. “I think it is a good way to build the Acapella culture in the country because our country isn’t well known for Acapella singing, and so I think this is a good way to get it kick started. “The universities that are taking part in it should pride themselves that they were the ones to have founded this new root, and build the Acapella culture in South Africa.” However, having just finished the SU Acapella Competition, and currently running the new Culture Festival, KUKO is being stretched thin,” said Josephs. “It’s quite a lot to plan something this big within a month for the Executive Committee, what with the Tygerberg students writing their exams during this time and everyone else caught up with academics, it’s crunch time.
“SU Acapella has taken so much out of us academically that now to do this again is pushing it. It is a lot, but we’re excited for this to happen - I think at the moment it’s just quite scary,” says Josephs. The event will take place on the 13 October at two separate venues, namely the Drostdy Theatre at 18:00 and the Fismer Hall in the Konservatorium at 18:45. Tickets are available online for R80-R100 - links may be found on KUKO’s Facebook page. Die Matie will also be livestreaming the event. When asked why students should attend the competition, Josephs had the following to say: “I think it’s nice to experience our ensembles again, but also to experience how this is treated at other campuses. I think the more support this gets, it can only grow from here, and the competition will simply get bigger – if you didn’t go to Daisies, this is the place to be.”

Come SPYS up your life LISA DE CLERCQ
With the year drawing to a close, the somewhat ‘crazy’ aspects of student life seem to increase with every assignment that is squeezed in. The Spirituality, Philosophy and Yoga Society (SPYS) of Stellenbosch University provide students with the necessary tools to navigate “our complex world”. “We provide philosophical discussions for the mind, yoga for the body and meditations for the emotional and spiritual level,” said Gopi Jivana Dasa, Chairperson of SPYS. SPYS is a student society and their philosophical discussions are about issues relevant to students, but with spirituality as their foundation. “Our topics can range from political and social ideas or issues, to psychological talks that are purely philosophical or spiritual.” The society bases their spirituality on the Vedic philosophy which, according to Dasa, is all inclusive and in which anyone can find value. Some

aspects even cater to people who don’t believe in God or who are agnostic” said Dasa. The yoga sessions that the society hosts twice a week entails, according to Dasa, “normal” yoga and students who want to attend, do not necessarily need to be interested in the spiritual aspect that is linked with the rest of the society. SPYS is a very active society and hosts up to seven activities per week. These include three musical meditations, one philosophical discussion as well as the two yoga session of which the one is free.

Sy nuutste album, Blitzkriek, wat in 2017 uitgereik is, is by vanjaar se South African Music Awards (SAMA’s), sowel as by die Ghoematoekennings vir beste rockalbum genomineer.

ow that Stellenbosch is finally experiencing some spring weather it seems like the perfect time to embrace change. That is exactly what Grassy Spark have done. The band is releasing a new single, ‘The Candy’ and an accompanying music video in a feature on Expresso on 26 October and will have a media launch on 25 October. ‘The Candy’ is a collaboration between the band, their sound engineer, Jethro Harris, and producer Tutti Espi. The forthcoming single is an indication of the new direction in which the band is taking their sound. “For me personally ‘The Candy’ is entirely about being swept off your feet by the idea of conception. Naturally the inspiration comes from conceiving my firstborn child. This extends into

The idea for Grassy Spark originated when Riley wanted to win over a girl by writing her a song. Initially the band was a duo consisting of Riley and Yanick Bathfield, both of whom provide vocals and play the guitar.
They were later joined by Lawrence Jaeger on drums, bassist Kevin Kok and more recently keyboard and saxophone player Simon Ackermann. Riley said that while none of the members grew up in the near identical sounding suburb of Grassy Park,
they wanted a name that represented Cape Town, while at the same time communicating the energy for which Grassy Spark has become known. Releasing an album is not part of the band’s immediate plans, instead they want to release singles and art pieces, which may or may not become an album. While the future holds much promise for Grassy Spark, the band wants fans to keep an open mind and have a laidback approach when listening to their music. “We like to create what we feel, and what we like, and this varies from song to song. Our music tastes are as diverse as our personalities, and this makes writing difficult sometimes. Photo: THEODORE AFRIKA “We keep the creative gates open and stay true to our origins. We are just an idea to be enjoyed… just watch, just enjoy. No expectations, just be present in this experience with us,” said Riley.
The eccentric Elle E presents Etiquette JANA GREYLING
Cape Town based singer-songwriter Elle E is a self-taught musician who initially started her solo career as a side project to her two already existing bands – Two Stroke and Catwalk Trash. Now that Ellenie Eloff, aka Elle E, has decided to focus on being a solo artist she has the freedom to do with her music what she wants. On working as a solo artist Eloff says: “It’s very challenging but worth it. I can take the music into any direction I want and work at the pace I want. As is I am constantly crafting my songs and writing new ones. The wheel keeps turning.”
The products of this new-found freedom are her raw, DIY, catchy garage rock tunes, as she describes them. Her first album Etiquette has been described as more playful than her previous releases. Elle E simply wants her music to “make people feel good when they listen to it”. The biggest challenge in creating her music has been to define her sound and style. “Getting your guitar tone the way you want it is a continuous process,” said Eloff. Her music has evolved a lot since she first started her solo career and it still continues to evolve. “I started out playing guitar, bass drum and hi-hats with my feet while

Regarding her future, one of Elle E’s goals would be to collaborate with Jack White and make the most of the opportunities that present themselves. “I want to play at as many shows and festivals as I can and also do a little tour to Johannesburg and Pretoria.” Elle E also plans to record new songs in studio and “bring in some extra musicians to make things even louder”.
Idees is baie soos selfone in hierdie sin.

Skelmbosch
The gossip behind the news. The truth behind campus politics.
Somer bobene Gorrel se bobene is ongelooflik seer, aangsien dit eweskielik somer is. By Gorrel se sagte velletjies is Gorrel se bene rou geskuur, want Gorrel hou van kort broekies dra.

WORLD MENTAL HEALTH MONTH

BE AWARE OF
YOUR
LIZETTE RABE
T
he recent tragic death of Tumi Kabi – yet another young, bright, talented student on the threshold of her dreams – again highlighted the urgency to break the silence and the stigma surrounding mental health. We need to not only start talking about mental health issues the way we would about other illnesses, but also DO something about it. Being a student is an exciting phase of life. You are young and strong and preparing yourselves for your future – one in which you can make all your dreams come true, because if you can dream it, you can do it. Right? Not always... because the flipside is also that it might be the scariest time of your life, as things might not be as smooth as you want them to be. And all those uncertainties and anxieties can devour one from inside. If you do not tend to your mental well-being, you might develop a clinical illness. And that’s exactly why we need to break the silence around mental health, and not only talk the talk but also walk the walk. Speak up, as in the slogan of this year’s Varsity Sports campaign for mental health. Speak up, because that way we can take the bogey out of the bogey man and ensure mental illnesses
get the medical treatment and clinical therapy they need. If you learn to recognise the symptoms, you are empowering yourself to help yourself or a friend. Common warning signs of a mental health condition are - Feeling sad or withdrawn for more than two weeks, - A sudden overwhelming fear that prohibits you from functioning normally, - Repeated (and excessive) use of alcohol or drugs, - Drastic changes in mood, behaviour or personality, - Not eating, or binge-eating, - Throwing up or other excessive measures to lose weight, - Insomnia, or oversleeping, - Restlessness, - Difficulty concentrating, - Seeing, hearing or believing things that are not real, - Loss of interest in activities that

you once enjoyed, - Persistent headaches, digestive disorders, and chronic pain, and - Lastly, trying to harm yourself, or thoughts of doing so, including involuntary thoughts of suicide.
The Hope Hike and Hope Bike will be held on Sunday, 14 October, at Blaauwklippen, R44, Stellenbosch. To enter go to https://www.entryninja.com/events/event/30302-hope-hike-18. (Ensure you enter the student category, where all items only cost R25.)
The Mental Health Information Centre (MHIC) in our Medical Faculty stresses that to remain in control you need to develop a healthy lifestyle through a balanced diet, exercise and enough (and good quality) sleep. Normal use of alcohol and caffeine is fine, but be aware of abuse, and avoid drugs and smoking. Ensure that you have support from family and friends, structure your life with to-do lists, tackle items one by one, and apply time management strategies. If you recognise symptoms in yourself or a friend, do not delay to find help. A mental health condition will not go away if you ignore it.
in Somerset-Wes Mediclinic gebore.
so dit versterk hulle verhouding.

Discussing Damestouch: a touchy subject
Eendrag’s Damestouch is an anual event which includes girls’ residences playing touch rugby, with an after party. Natasha Rusch and Deslene Prins asked some Maties what they think.
Cara Van Heerden B.Eng Chemical, 2nd year “I love Damestouch. It is a great way to meet new people. For me it also builds spirit within the Res, so it was nice when we played to see Nerina there with their merch and their signs encouraging us. It was really fun to play as well, and I really didn’t feel like the men were watching you or watching for the joke of it. It was just a very fun day of getting to know your res and getting to know the men in Eendrag. And it was a great initiative to get food (for #Move4Food) … I don’t see why pitting (female) teams against each other is a problem. We do it with all other sports like soccer, netball – all the sports are the same. Damestouch just brings the social and the sport together.”
Nicola Taljaard LLB Law, 3rd year “I think that the Damestouch is a very problematic event for two reasons. The first being that the comments that I have heard coming from the drunk guys during the event clearly go with the sole intention of discussing and sexualizing the girls. This is especially important considering the rape culture that’s so prominent on our campus. The second reason is due to the amount of waste involved in this event. The event makes no effort to combat the shocking amount of plastic that gets used every year. The day after Damestouch the field was so covered in waste that you could barely see the grass. Is this wasteful event really necessary?”
Ockert Goosen B. Eng Mechatronic, 3rd year “For Eendrag, Damestouch creates a social platform to make a difference in the Stellenbosch Community. This year, we chose to back SU100’s Move4Food initiative and over 1700 cans were collected through the help of the participating women’s residences and PSO’s. Plus, a percentage of the profits from the Damestouch day went to Move4Food. As Eendragter’s we try to be at the forefront of leadership and innovation. With Damestouch as a platform we can set an example for other events and every year strive to build on our social impact by contributing to more charitable organizations in Stellenbosch.”
Ruth O’Reilly BSc Agric. Animal Science, 2nd year “I’m not completely against Damestouch, but I think it’s a very outdated way of doing things. It’s not empowering to women, and if you’re going to get women to play a male-dominated sport like rugby, then it shouldn’t be about getting them to compete against each other so that they can have the honour of playing for Eendrag. I think it’s great that they’re involving a great cause (#Move4Food), but I feel like the event is more objectifying than it is empowering. I understand that they are very traditional about it. Maybe getting Maties Sport involved try and make it feel more real to make it feel less like the female part is just an accessory to the event.”

Hockey: suffering Summer League DANÉ ELOFF
The 2018 Hockey Summer League got cancelled in the previous week. Club management has decided on stopping the current event as too many teams simply could not participate. Nine hockey teams pulled out of the league so far, and remaining teams struggle to find available players due to various academic reasons. Club Management reported that they could no longer afford to have supporting staff working in the evenings for five hours and running lights for a long duration with very little activity on the hockey turfs. Summer League is a tradition that has been happening for about ten
years, normally during February and March of a year. Due to financial complications and the astro maintenance only finishing in March, the hockey representatives decided early in the year to have the Summer League split into two parts – April and September. Winter League would also then stay as normal. This lead to a lot of teams not able to participate due to academic priorities (such as test week). Hannalize Joubert, hockey representative of one of the ladies’ residences, said that the decision was a good one in terms of the practicality of it. However, she also said that it does
take away the privilege of playing for the players who wanted to play. “The times were just not ideal, everybody’s academics were rough,” she stated. Scharlize Crafford, Maties Hockey Club Assistant, having been at Maties for six years, said she has never seen this happen. “It was not nice to start this year so complicated... and maybe I should have gone with my gut feeling to leave Summer League for 2019,” were her words. However, Crafford is confident that from next year on the league will happen again as intended. Maties Hockey has given teams the option of organizing friendly matches which will be prepared for in advance.
Adrianne Hobbs B. Eng Industrial, 1st year “I think that Damestouch is empowering! I am a feminist and love rugby, so having the roles reversed where us girls play rugby and having the guys cheering us on from the sidelines is a cool initiative. No one made us feel belittled or discriminated against. We also weren’t made to wear certain things and no one was forced to do anything. We all had a great time! Drinking does play a part in these student events, but unlike most residence events this event wasn’t just a ‘jol’ but it actually had a theme and Eendrag contributed to a well worth cause. Overall, I think that Damestouch was a really cool event.”

A victorious weekend for the men’s and women’s sevens rugby NATASHA RUSCH
The Maties Rugby 7’s Men’s and Women’s teams were undeniably victorious during the Inter-Varsity tournament held on Saturday 29 September. The Men’s team competed against UCT, UWC and CPUT, whilst the Women’s team competed against UCT. The men beat UCT 28-12, UWC 35-7, CPUT 24-14 and in the final they beat UCT 36-7. In the three matches against UCT the Women won 29-5 and 25-5, and in the final they beat UCT by a large margin with a score of 50-0. Malcolm Kayes, the current captain of the Men’s 7’s team, said that the highlight of the tournament for him was the team’s spirit as the “guys were so happy, they expressed themselves clearly and worked cohesively as a unit out there on the field”. Kayes referred to an instance where, during their match against UWC, they made a break from their 22 meter line and George Lourence chased the attacker and pulled him
down just 2 meters from Maties’ try line. He said that “that sort of commitment sets the bar for us and just shows the ‘never die’ attitude that the team always has.” Frederik van Zyl, a wing, who is in his first year playing for the Men’s 7’s scored 3 tries that weekend. He said that the team has made a huge step up from their last USSA in Margate because they were now playing a “much more intelligent game”. Kayes said that the team on the whole is a young squad, but that in his opinion he said that “the Inter-Varsity weekend was a good platform for us to learn and grow as a squad going forward into the Varsity Sports 7’s Rugby Festival being held on the 5 and 6 October.” Kayes and van Zyl both said that in competing at the Varsity Sports 7’s Rugby Festival they aim and hope to “bring home the trophy again”. Furthermore, van Zyl said that they are also aiming to be Maties’ most successful high performance unit of the year. The Women’s 7’s team, coached by
Johann Zeier and captained by Karrine Van Rooyen, was a team that was said to feel ‘empowered’ after their three matches. Running up to this event they trained vigorously for six weeks. Zeier said that before the Inter-Varsity tournament they had a goal, and it was a goal to be as competitive as possible in the games. The Women’s squad comprises of around 18 women who all had a chance to play and represent the side. Zeier said that about five or six of the women were completely new to the sport, and that this tournament was their first game that they had ever played. With quite a big squad already, Karrine Van Rooyen also said that “Maties has been very supportive where they can in growing Women’s Rugby as a sport” and that their team is “excited to see what the future holds”. The results prove that they played well and reached their expectations. Zeier said that “for me as a coach, my highlight was seeing every lady giving 100%, working extremely hard, being competitive, not holding back and

MATIE PRIDE The women’s team all smiles for a team photo. getting stuck into every game.” Rugby 7’s for women in Europe is currently a continuously growing sport. However, Zeier said that South Africa has been slow to catch on and hopes that soon it won’t just be the few university teams competing, but that the momentum will also catch on at schools. Karrine Van Rooyen said that she hopes that “this type of exposure will help get more girls involved in
their Matie team too”. At the end of the match, the UCT and Maties women huddled together and voiced that the winner of the tournament was “both ‘Rugby’ and women!” and that they hope that it is a step in the right direction, resulting in one day having enough women’s University rugby teams to participate in the USSA Varsity Sports 7s Rugby Festival.
