WHAT IS YOUR JOB TITLE AND WHAT DID YOU STUDY?

I am an Associate at SLF Lawyers. I studied Bachelor of Laws at Victoria University over three years Prior to that, I studied Criminology as part of my undergraduate Arts degree which inspired me to pursue a career in the law.

TELL US ABOUT WHO YOU ARE & WHERE YOU WORK

After graduating law in 2017, I took a year off to complete some legal internships and to travel overseas. I then began full time work as a law clerk at SLF Lawyers performing the work of a graduate lawyer I did this whilst undertaking my Practical Legal Training at the College of Law. I was admitted in May 2019. From the very outset, SLF lawyers exposed me to a wide range of commercial legal work across multiple practice areas.

TheLineofDistraction

The attention span of a goldfish.' A phrase I never understood until I started tracking a consistent pattern of getting distracted by the littlest of things, all while entertaining widely productive activities Let megiveyouanexample.Theotherday,Isatdownto figure out a research essay due in 43 hours, (because let's be real, the true genius only reveals itself when you are at the precipice of panic and hysterics, and is weigheddownbyanearingdeadline

popped up on YouTube that a new video had been uploadedby'HowtoSurvive'titledas,'Howtosurvive a crocodile attack' (Spoiler alert: You cannot survive)

It seemed important at that point to watch this with myutmostattentionsoImovedtothebedandunder the blanket Seven hours later I had 36 hours remaining for my essay because I fell asleep midlistening to my beloved 'Crocodile attack survival' video. PomodoroTechnique

My first source of distraction was not the TV, I sat before, the bed that was calling me from a few metres away, or my phone which seemed to buzz so incessantly as though it were calling out to me. No!

My first source of distraction, was 'aesthetics'. For my productivity in getting down a stellar essay hinged upon the aesthetics with which I wrote the title of my notes in my diary, 'Research Essay' After writing, rewriting, scrapping, and restarting, I decided to pick up my phone to look into potential ideas for putting togethernotesofthehighestorder Ofcourse,asIdidthis, anotification

Ultimately, when your actions are controlled or affected by bad habits or a reduced attention due to overstimulation and the sheer privilege of too many reasons to not be productive than to be productive, it is necessary to get down to the brass tacks of what getsyoutotheendgoalie yourbestproductiveself

It is not surprising that many of us out here are going through a similar struggle, which was why it also did not take a lot of googling to stumble across the 'Pomodorotechnique'

For those of you who are not familiar with this concept, thePomodorotechnique

D I C T U M S O C I E T Y
Procrastination/ Procrastination/ //Productivity Productivity

Procrastination/ Procrastination/ //Productivity Productivity

works on a concept of rewarding small increments of unadulterated concentration and productivity Its recipe requires a task, a timeline, broken down into 25 minute chunks, followed by 5 minute intervals or Pomodoros!

It is important to set a timer for the 25 minute periods as well as the pomodoro periods as this technique relies upon the urgency that'll drive a personwhentheyarebeingrundownbyaclock. This way, you are not under the impression that you have anentireweek,orday,orinmycase43hours

However, the Pomodoro technique proved itself to be a trusty manner of maximising productivity after the fourthincrementforIbeganfeelinglessburntoutand moreorganisedwhileworkingduringthose25minute periods What further helped was having fixed sources of entertainment or relaxation during the pomodoro periods ImeanhowdoIcompletelyanentireepisode of The Office in 5 minutes really? My first few pomodoro periods were really spent in overwhelming excitement of what I could do during my duly earned pomodorotime.

PersonalPomodoroExperience

Now I was not too convinced by this strategy when I read about the theoretical idea because I am personally an 'all or nothing' student (Not that I recommend this to others) wherein, I have either not completed my task at all, or I am 4-8 hours deep into my assignment completing it all at once especially if I am neck deep in having writer's flow coursing through my system. So it was a bit hard for me to accept that I could exercise the level of patience required when limited to 25 minute increments of productivityonceyoubeginsaidstudies.

I mean realistically you should not be doing anything too stimulating at this time because its purpose is to give you a break to rewind before kickstarting again, but if you are anything like me your idea of such rewind may be watching a video for a quick laugh or catching up on messages with friends The point is, know your idea of rewinding and fix them prior to venturingintoyourpomodorostrategyfortheday!

D I C T U M S O C I E T Y

Procrastination/ Procrastination/ //Productivity Productivity

Besides this technique there are always day to day strategies with less funky names to go by You could try any of the following to help yourself be less distractedandmoreproactive:

Eating well before you begin working on your task(butnottoowellforthatmayleadtoaninja napthatlastsalifetime!)

Putting your phone on 'Sleep' mode or better yet, handing your phone over to someone who would never give that phone back to before the designatedtime(akamymum)

You can substitute 'pomodoro' with incentives that do work for you Some times when I do heavy readings in large chunks I allocate candy forreachingcertainparagraphsorchaptersinmy reading Be wary though, you might just end up eating all that candy as you get exponentially productive

When trying to understand, absorb, or revise concepts reading, and calling out questions and answers out loud. Wrapping your head around learning objectives also improves your effectiveness, and ensures you are focused on therealtaskathand

Drawingoutsimplifiedmapsordummy

points also prove to be very helpful when trying to stay attentive! (I highly recommend the DUMMY POINTS tactic, for it really deters you from feeling overwhelmedbyheavy-hittinglawconcepts!!)

Hopefully in the case of Distractions v Productivity, the latter wins for you. If it doesn't give Pomodoro a try.Youmightbepleasantlysurprised!

FUN FACT (Actually not so fun!): Procrastination is derived from the negative feelings you may associate with certain tasks Such that a certain activity may make you feel stupid, insecure, or overwhelmed lets say by the idea of getting it right and perfect the very first time. This leads to a pattern of avoidance which develops into habitual procrastination!

Reducing your tasks to simple and understandable tasks may be exactly what you need to overcome procrastination and distraction in your studies.

President Mei Lole

I am a mature aged samoan islander student, who is a very dedicated church girl (woman) and basically everything I do is to Glorify God! I am also still a bit of a gamer, which I honestly thought I would outgrow after raising a family and aging gracefully lol! But no, I still enjoy the challenges of the PlayStation and Xboxes (but I do miss the good old Nintendo's and Wii's). I have a passion for media and computers and I love to just have a laugh about anything, with anyone and everyone!

I am in my final year of my Law degree and I aim to be a judge or magistrate. I got married young and started a family, now that my children are all grown up and in the stages of choosing their own life & future pathways, it inspired me to finally pursue my own and get my law degree.

I truly hope to inspire others to follow their dreams and to know that age doesn't stop you ‘If you really want to do something, don't ever make age an excuse not to pursue your dreams, just

go for it and always believe in yourself!’ YOU CAN DO IT!

Since starting my law journey, mine and my family's favorite movie to watch on repeat is Legally Blonde 1 & 2! In Elle Woods voice "I object '' haha.

Vice President Matthew Keath

Hello, my Name is Matthew Keath, and I am the current Vice President of Dictum, after being the careers director last year. I’m currently in my final year here at VU I came to the law as a mature age student. For many years I was the owner of a web services firm.

My favourite book? I love reading so I’m not sure I can reduce it to one, but one book that had a huge impact was 1984 by George Orwell When it comes to movies, I’m going to say the 90’s classic Aussie film The Castle, because it’s the only film Aussie comedy I know about the Australian Constitution, and it has some great lines. (Tell ‘em their dreaming!).

Law and society is always something I have been interested in. During a legal matter I was involved in, I mentioned –again - that I would enjoy being a lawyer and helping people solve disputes, particularly when someone was being screwed over My wife said, do it – I’ll support you, and in two months I had started my law journey at VU.

I look forward to meeting and supporting students in my position in 2023 Please reach out if you would like to catch up for a chat.

I completed my Advanced Diploma of Legal Studies before starting the bachelor degree in 2021. While I have kept an open mind during my studies, I still have a keen interest in dispute resolution, crime and family law, and are currently considering going to the bar I am also a Nationally Accredited mediator.

Secretary Polly Tamer

In spite of this, I enjoy playing piano, watching movies (any movie – not paranormal though), reading novels and writing, which is lucky, because there is a lot of reading and writing in law. Separately, they provide an escape from the real world, which is nice, but as Andy Dufresne said, we gotta ‘get busy living, or get busy dying!’

Hello!

I hope I had you at hello!

(I also hope you got that reference) ;)

I am currently in my third year of Honours in both Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Psychology. When I sat down to write a little bit about myself, I thought how hard could this be? I’m finding that it’s a lot harder than I thought. Perhaps I can provide a bit of insight through the fact that I’m just a big contradiction. Aren’t we all? I like to challenge myself & spontaneously take up roles like Secretary of Dictum Society but more often than not, I just like to live in a routine, block to block.

I love being productive, and learning, but also am an avid procrastinator (creative and productive procrastination is key to reducing guilt if I can include a handy hint while I’m here). As Oscar Wilde once said, ‘to define is to limit’ and so as the law likes to do, I’ll leave it open to interpretation.

I joined law school because I am passionate, but also intrigued by the law. The law surrounds us, it governs everything we do, some of us abide by them, others break them (those are the ones that will keep most of us in a job) and yet it is very much a human construct. In this, my two degrees intersect. The law relies on people, to follow them, to break them, even to make them and so psychology, perhaps even psychopathology is intrinsic to the law. I would like to make an impact and help the law move towards a law that recognises the struggles and vulnerabilities of people and aims to help rather than hinder human development. In furtherance, I aim to help people and hopefully make people’s lives just a little bit easier and so I am also contemplating becoming a disability advocate, which also combines these two fields.

As I’m sure you have all already noticed, I am a movie lover, even more obvious a lover of movie quotes, I love to read, and I also really enjoy music, any way it comes!

I F Y O U H A V E N ' T A L R E A D Y , M E E T

Treasurer Ivyluanna Robertson

Studying Bachelor of law and currently in my 3rd year this year.

I’m 22 from a big family with 8 siblings Still young and open to seek and try new things and love to learn anything along the way of my journey in life. In times of difficulties and hardships during my law school journey and anything I face apart from my studies, I like to pray and rely on the word of God for guidance because Jesus is the only way I chose to study law as it was not only a passion I loved to pursue but I love to face challenges and being able to study in the field of law helps me to advocate and defend those who are disadvantaged. Law school isn’t easy, but it’s never a dull field to study as there are many aspects to learn and many concepts of law to uncover and that is what interests me the most.

My favourite movie would hands down Harry Potter and lord of the rings. Favourite song would be anything that is Afro beat and r&b, you can’t go wrong with this lol. Don’t really have a favourite book other than reading law books hahahah and my favourite activity would be spending time with my loved ones, going on adventures and playing volleyball.

I'm currently in my 4th year studying a Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Criminology

I am currently 21 years old and I have enjoyed every moment of university life. I have been involved with Student Life, the Ambassador program and volunteering as part of my university life. Personally, I love spending time with my family. My partner and I own a 10 month old fur baby who we love to take to the park I enjoy watching the latest shows on Binge and baking.

If I can give students any advice it would be to 'Get Involved!' there are so many opportunities within the university and you can only get out what you put in. I joined Dictum to be involved in my law school journey I became a Dictum member during covid and participated in online events in order to be involved and socially interact with my peers. Becoming a member of the committee was one of my best law school decisions as I get to develop my interpersonal skills and networking skills.

My all time favourite movie would have to be 'Just Go With It' with Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston. My favourite activity is going for drives to new places with my partner.

Mini introduction about yourself - I describe myself as ethnically indian, politically Australian and socially Brazilian I run my own business in hotel industry. I love learning languages and have interest in different cultures.

Currently doing a semester exchange in Mexico and trying to improve my Spanish.

Why I joined law school - During covid I saw many short stay/ hotel businesses collapsing. I felt that many businesses could have survived if they could afford legal help. But legal help is very expensive and out of reach for small businesses. So, I decided to study law to be able give free legal help to small businesses.

I love to cook. Always on the look out to create new recipes mixing ingredients from different cultures.

What’s your future career? What’s your future career?

Of course, you might have set your heart on becoming a solicitor or a barrister to actually practice law. Good for you! You might want to try it, and see what happens – see if it suits you, and the lifestyle you want to lead

Ideally, we need to find professions that: Did you know that many qualified lawyers choose not to practice, and many leave the profession after some time? There are many reasons for that So wouldn’t it be a good idea to know what other options are out there?

You can of course go into policy work, court and other administrative and management roles, and there are many other choices

The good news is that your law skills will be transferable to other careers One to consider is bid and proposal management

This is what I have chosen – because, I LOVE to write, and I enjoy the elevated income It s exciting to be the conductor of an orchestra to bring all the pieces together to help my great employer bring in business It’s quite social. I get work with international teams. It is rewarding, and it provides me with opportunities for professional and personal growth Yet, it still gives me room to exercise my thinking, creative and writing talents – all

The skills are in demand – globally. Have a look on Seek or LinkedIn. Search for ‘Proposal Manager’, ‘Proposal Writer’, ‘Bid Coordinator’, or ‘Bid Manager’ There are always vacancies across Australia, and internationally In fact, international head-hunters seek out the skills. I have the privilege of working for a massive multinational corporate with offices all over the world Who knows what the future might bring!

Work in the tech sector. Bid and proposal careers are often available in law, consulting, engineering, health, facilities management, and virtually every sector you can think of So, if you have a double degree, a special interest outside of law, or an earlier career elsewhere – think how you can employ the double! If you have project management experience and qualifications – all the better

You could also find work in local, smaller businesses if that is your thing If you are an early career seeker, you can see if you can start as a bid coordinator, content writer, or other There are a variety of roles – see below It is something to consider – to set yourself up for a long lasting career with great earning potential

utilise our talents, generates the income we want, and provides us with work we love

What’s your future career? What’s your future career?

I get to exercise my highly valued law skills I write to build compelling proposals I absorb the rules and constraints of the deal, identify opportunities, gather evidence on why we should win, and then write persuasively. I change the style to suit the audience I ensure precision and eliminate ambiguity to reduce commercial risk

Just because y mean you hav developed sou option is bid a You can do it technology, co profit, governm and the list go always openin internationally professional a for further info can become a access to reso You can also s Australia chap Many people c management careers, areas without prior chance to exe management, research, writ development, collaboration opportunities transportable skills, and it can be very well rewarded I can assure you, it is a great way to see how business works at ‘the pointy end’, in business development The lifeblood of every business

Obiter Issue 1 2023 and its respective cover have taken inspiration from the principle of freedom of expression Going beyond its typical translation in society, we tend to ignore the value of such freedoms when we are predominantly free to express and speak and think without question but to some, the simplest aspects in life are dictated by the lack thereof something as simple as the inability to make free-thinking decisions in day to day life from choosing to pursue passion over practicality to engaging in discourse over topics that in many ways may seem overtly graphic or unnecessary This can be a form of obstruction of the freedom of expression by virtue
