CONDITION OF BUSINESS The conditions of business set up below are information guidance for prospective buyer and seller with any enquiries relating to buying or selling at the auction. We encourage you to read them wisely and thoroughly.

THE BUYER

Estimated Price Estimated price is the price range, which reflects the opinion of our specialist for the price expected to offer at the auction. This should not be relied on as a statement that this price is either at which the lot will sell or its value for any other purpose. Estimated prices are based upon prices recently paid at auction, and the condition of the artworks including the quality, rarity and history of ownership (provenance). Reserve Price The reserve is the confidential minimum price the seller is willing to accept and below which a lot not be sold. Buyer’s Premium Buyers are reminded that the price to be paid will be the sum of the final bid price plus the buyer’s premium. The rate of buyer’s premium for each lot is 22 % (twenty two percent) of the hammer price.

BEFORE THE AUCTION Viewing Pre-sale viewings are strongly recommended for prospective buyers in order to examine the artworks thoroughly. Pre-sale viewing is open for the public at no charge and usually displayed for 2 (two) days prior to the sale. Condition Reports Condition reports are available upon request. They are statements of opinion and should not be relied on as statements of definitive fact. Descriptions of property are not warranties and that lot is sold “as is”. All goods are sold with all faults and imperfections and errors of description. Illustrations in catalogues are for identification only. It is strongly recommended that prospective buyers inspect and seek any independent expert advice to satisfy you as to authorship, attribution, authenticity, genuineness, origin, date, age, provenance or condition of lot. Registration If you are planning to participate in the auction, you will need to register with us at the registration desk, to complete a bidder registration form and to receive a bidding number to identify you if you are a successful bidder. Registration can be made during the viewing period or 30 minutes prior to the sell.

THE AUCTION Bidding All artworks are auctioned in consecutive numerical order. Bidding is done in Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) in incremental price raise. The auctioneer will accept bids from those present in the saleroom or absentee bidders participating by telephone or by written bid left with HERITAGE in advance. Absentee/ Written Bids If you cannot attend the auction in person, you may bid in other ways. The most common is written bids. Written bids are written instruction given to HERITAGE to bid for you on one or more lots up to a maximum amount you specify for each lot. There is no charge for this service. If two or more parties leave identical bids, the first bid received by HERITAGE will take preference. Written bid forms are available 7 days before the sale and returned to HERITAGE within 24 hours before the sale or by fax to (021) 351 0707. Telephone Bids If you cannot attend the auction, HERITAGE will execute on behalf of your bid by telephone. Please make arrangements for this service at least 1 (one) day before the sale. It is advisable for you to leave your maximum bid, in case you are unable to reach us by phone. Successful Bids Successful bidder will be indicated by the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer after reaching or exceeding the reserve price. HERITAGE will record the bidder number of the buyer. Under the auctioneer’s discretion bidding may be reopened. Unsold lots When a lot fails to sell, the auctioneer will not announce a bidder’s number. Lots unsold will be returned to the consignor usually after a week in case there are any post sale offers.

AFTER THE AUCTION Payment Payment of purchases should be made within 7 (seven) calendar days. Please include your paddle number, name, lot number, and total payment in your bank instruction. If buyers do not make any payment or notice to HERITAGE during the scheduled time, they will be considered as withdrawing. Collection of Goods Goods can be collected only when payment has cleared and been received by HERITAGE. Due to space constraints, HERITAGE requires that purchases and unsold property be collected within 7 (seven) days. If the goods remain after 7 (seven) days HERITAGE reserves the right to cause the artworks to be stored at the expense of the purchaser. Storage and Insurance HERITAGE provides insurance cover for sold items for a maximum of 7 (seven) days after the date of the sale. If the goods have not been removed by the deadline, the goods will be deposited at warehouse and all storage transportation and other associated costs as well as risk shall be at the purchaser’s responsibility.

THE SELLER Auction estimates If you are considering selling your property at the auction, HERITAGE will provide a free initial estimate of its auction value. You can send a clear photograph of each item with complete data includes the dimension, artist’s signature, medium, physical condition and any other relevant information.

After Sale Notification You will receive an after sale advice listing the final bid price, or in the event that the property failed to sell, notification that it was bought-in to be returned to you. Payment for your sold property takes approximately 4 (four) weeks, provided payment has been received by us from the buyer.

CONDITIONS OF SALE These conditions of sale together with any terms and conditions set out a consignment form constitute the entire agreement with the Buyer on respect to any lots listed in the catalogue. Amendment to the catalogue descriptions may be made verbally during the course of auction or by appropriate posted notices. By bidding at the auction, you shall be bound by the conditions set out below. Terms used in these conditions * * * * * *

“The Buyer” means the person with the highest bid accepted by the auctioneer. “The Lot” means any items deposited with us for sale at auction and, in particular, the item (s) described against any lot number in the catalogue. “The Hammer Price” means the amount of the highest bid accepted by the auctioneer in relation to a lot. “The Reserve” means the amount below which we agree with the seller that the lot cannot be sold. “The Buyer’s Premium” means the charge payable by the buyer as a percentage of the hammer price, at the rate set out in the auction room at the time of the relevant sale. “Forgery” means a Lot constituting an imitation originally conceived and executed as a whole with a fraudulent intention to deceive as to authorship, origin, age, period, culture or source where the correct description as to such matters is not reflected by the description in the catalogue.

Withdrawal of Property HERITAGE reserve the right to withdraw from the sale the property or to have the property listed at any auction without any prior notice to the vendor. Control of Auction HERITAGE will have absolute discretion to determine the successful bidder should a dispute arise between the bidders and this includes the authority to reject any bid, to cancel the sale or to re-offer the property in dispute.

In the event a defaulting buyer has made a part payment, HERITAGE reserves the right to apply such payment to any such lots at its sole discretion. Forgery In the event of proven forgery, HERITAGE will refund to the buyer the purchase price of the lot. This refund will only occur on the following terms: (i) (ii)

The buyer must provide evidence from an independent expert who proves that the lot is a forgery. HERITAGE reserves the right to request further expert evidence if, in its sole discretion, it is not satisfied with the finding of either expert. The buyer must provide written notification to HERITAGE within 1 (one) year of the auction date of the forgery allegations.

No refund will occur if there is any conflict of opinion among accepted experts in the field or if it can be demonstrated that the lot is a forgery only by means of scientific process that could damage or otherwise jeopardize the condition of the lot and which scientific techniques were not commonly employed until after the publication of the catalogue. This guarantee is for the benefit of the buyer only and cannot be assigned. Such buyer must have remained the owner of the property without disposing of any interest in it to any third party up until the time the alleged forgery was discovered. Handling and Packaging Handling and packing of all purchase lots shall be at the risk of the buyer who shall pay an administration charge if HERITAGE is responsible for such services. HERITAGE shall use our best efforts to take care when handling the packing but remind the buyer that from 7 (seven) days time after the sale, the goods are entirely at the buyer’s risk. You can instruct your own shipper for the shipping. However, we can also arrange for such service but are not responsible for any costs incurred during the shipping. Notice HERITAGE remind prospective buyers that none of the property in this catalogue is subject to any guarantee of authenticity and all of the artworks sold “as is” with all imperfections, incompleteness, faults and errors of description. All property is sold without any warranty or representation. HERITAGE is not responsible for any errors or omission in the catalogue. Buyers are strongly recommended to take independent professional advice on selection of purchase.

Ownership of Property The fall of the auctioneer’s hammer indicates the property sold to the buyer who is responsible for the property and shall be liable to pay the full purchase price within 7 (seven) days. If extended payment terms have not been granted, penalty interest will be charged on the unpaid balance until paid. Remedies of HERITAGE If the buyer is in breach of any of the conditions of sale then HERITAGE may choose to take the following action: (1) (2) (3)

He moved to Amsterdam, the Netherlands in 1964, studied in paintings and graphic art at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (1965 – 1967) and continued to Rijks Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten (1967 – 1969). He frequently visits Indonesia especially Bali. He received awards from the Urio Prijs (1969), Willink van Collen Prijs (1971), Jeanna Bieruma Oosting Prijs (1974) and Arti Medaille (1987). From 1980 – 1988 he was professor at the National Academy of Fine Arts (Rijks Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten) in Amsterdam where he taught drawing and painting. He held solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions in Europe, USA, Singapore, and Indonesia. His works are in the collection of the Netherlands state, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, City Council of Amsterdam, Duta Fine Art Museum, Jakarta, Neka Museum, Bali and private collections in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, etc. Husner works intensively in Bali since 1997. Adrian-Jean Le Mayeur de Merpres was born in Brussels with noble ties to the Belgium royal family. Le Mayeur was keen to become an artist at an early age but was persuaded by his father, an artist himself, to complete his studies. Le Mayeur graduated as a civil engineer but soon devoted himself to painting. Inspired by the Impressionist movement in Europe, Le Mayeurâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s works were executed with bold free flowing strokes using bright gay colours. Le Mayeur was an ardent traveler who travelled Europe and Asia capturing the sunlight and grandiose sights from his travels on canvas. This painting, Les Tuilleries, was done when Le Mayeur visited Paris, capturing the magnificence of the Les Tuilleries in his Impressionist manner. In 1932, Le Mayeur landed in Indonesia where he was drawn especially to the Balinese culture. Le Mayeur instantly fell in love with the Balinese people, traditions, dances, and the tropical sunlight which surrounded him and settled down in Bali, later marrying his model and Balinese dancer, Ni Pollok. Le Mayeur continued to capture the grace and beauty of Balinese culture and his works are still preserved in his house, which has since been converted into the La Mayeur Museum, Bali, Indonesia. Basoeki Abdullah Born in Solo, January 27, 1915, he is the second son of Abdullah Soerjosoebroto, a prominent landscape painter. He studied at the Academia van Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague, the Netherlands. Basoeki Abdullah started painting since he was 5 years old in simple drawing, and at 10 he traveled to Surabaya and Bali where he started portrait painting. During 1933, he held his first exhibition in Bandung. He brought his painting to RMP. Sosrokartono, RA. Kartini’s brother, who was very impressed on Basoeki’s painting. Sosrokartono and Prince of Mangkunegoro VII became the person who greatly supported his painting career until Basoeki become a famous painter. During that time he continued his study at Academia van Beeldende Kunsten in the Hague, the Netherlands. Basoeki Abdullah is one of the most prominent Indonesian maestros in portrait paintings. The late artist was well-known for his realistic paintings. Besides painting of portraits of beautiful women, he is also noted for his natural beauty and sensuous landscape, as well as paintings of scenes from legends that are also tempered with the same lyrical and overly sensual treatment. Basoeki likes to paint anything beautiful. Flamboyant flowers, women, landscapes, flora and fauna, to the leading figures painted very nicely. He often went to places for field trip, observing object for his painting and put it into sketch. His ability to depict nature makes all the objects seemed to be dramatic, alive and more beautiful in colors than the actual objects.

Lu Hao was born in Beijing, China, 1969. Lu Hao graduated from the Chinese Ink Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in 1992. He had become recognized as an accomplished ink painter by 1997 when he began to explore other ways in which to express his concern about the clash between the legacies of China great classical civilization on the one hand and the drive to modernity propagated by the Chinese government on the other. He was a lecturer at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (ASRI) Yogyakarta specialized in Balinese paintings (1957 – 1959). His works are amongst the collection of: Painting Museum, (Ubud), Bali Art Center (Denpasar), Sono Budoyo Museum (Yogyakarta), Tropen Museum (Amsterdam) and Rijksmuseum Voor Volkenkunde (Leiden). Born in Rome, Italy, on 6 december 1926. He studied at the Gimnasium in Perugia (1938-1942). Then he continued his studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Perugia (1945-1947). Agung Mangu Putra Mangu Putra’s works arise from intense contact with the world as a conscious expression of his main creative orientation. Representations of natural phenomena, along with the inner pulse of life, form the main stream of his search. The natural world, such as mountains and coasts, are depicted as identifiable objects. Some of his works with abstract designs imply natural images, such as the character of water and the texture and colors of earth or stone. Nevertheless, there is a certain progressive critical vision in Mangu Putra’s way of viewing and interpreting the world. His works are not mirrors of direct observations with the naked eye. Natural objects are shown as if through sophisticated technological imagery, so that they appear artificial, attractive, provocative, and even fantastic. His artistic world is not a natural one but instead is ‘polluted’ by civilization. Mangu’s magnificent landscapes and volcanoes are depicted as majestic, timeless and all powerful, yet quietly dormant. S. Sudjojono Sindudarsono Sudjojono was born in Kisaran North Sumatra, on December 14, 1913. He studied painting from Mas Pringadi and a Japanese painter, Chiyoyi Yazaki. In 1937 he founded the Persagi Indonesian Artists Association in Jakarta. In 1970 he was awarded recognition in art by the Indonesian government. His works have been exhibited in the Netherlands and in the Fukuoka Art Museum in Japan (1980). Local exhibitions have been held in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Denpasar and Bandung. He died in Jakarta (1986). Sudjojono is widely regarded as the driving force behind the establishment of modern art in Indonesia. His favorite subjects were ordinary Indonesians, depicted with piercing emotional realism, sometimes showing joy, pathos, dignity, and frustration. Quite often his figures inhabit dramatic urban or rural landscapes in an almost epic sense. S. Sudjojono used a combination of fantasy and memory to create his surrealistic landscapes. Sometimes, he incorporated elements derived from places that he had seen in books or actually visited. Since he often painted landscape paintings, Sudjojono never stood against art of the landscape. In the period after 1965, Sudjojono’s landscape painting show a social-nationalist tendency, where in them elements of life and progress can be found, apparent in the depictions of farmers and fisherman at works and so on. These visual elements are lodged Sudjojono’s dream of ‘utopia’ and concern for the improvement of the peasant life. Sudjojono’s landscape paintings also raise concern towards the lives of the people and the environment within the area. Therefore, what makes Sudjojono’s landscape painting differ from the mooi indie is that he depicted the beauty and the wealth of the Indonesian landscape with its current problems and challenges. Moreover, the landscape do not illustrate physical reality of the nature, instead they represent the landscape of the artist’s mind.

Srihadi Soedarsono Born in Solo, December 4, 1931. In 1958 he studied fine arts at the Institute of Technology Bandung and the Ohio State University, United States (1960 – 1962). His works has been exhibited in Indonesia, the United States, Australia and Brazil. He received cultural awards from both the Indonesian government (1971) and Australian (1973). In 1978 and 1987, he received the highest award in the Biennial Exhibition in Jakarta. Srihadi is currently a senior lecturer in painting and drawing at the Jakarta Institute of Arts and the Bandung Institute of Technology. The dance is one of Srihadi’s favorite themes. In his paintings of dancers he continues to paint female dancers in the same upright pose that has used in the past. His dance work consist of series of dancers, even so, for Srihadi, each dance has its own particular mood, the gist of which he attempts to capture in his painting. At the same time, dance also offers a panorama of human life in general: it shows the dynamic union between the everyday world of material reality and the world beyond perception, the realm of the material. The merging of spiritual and physical control obtained in dance obviously appeals to the philosophical Srihadi. Some of his figurative paintings, especially the dancers, look deceptively similar, and that the figures have become stereotypes, but one should try to appreciate and study the details and minimal variations. Srihadi pays particular attention to the characteristic of the dancer and the artistic form of the dance. Every dance has its language or vocabulary of movement and type of costume, all of which imbued with philosophical meaning. Srihadi gives us many variants in this new approach to the depiction of the dance. When he first started to focus on the idea of movement, he did so by paying with the parallelism of gestures and by emphasizing the realistic aspect of the dancer’s bodies. Color was then relatively secondary. By the early 1990’s rhythm had taken a life of its own, as shown by the vibrant dynamism of the dancer. In painting the present lot, the dancers’ eyes remain transfixed even as their body movements are transformed into a feast of glittering color. Even so, and however much the costumes of the dancers drift rhythmically over the canvas surface, it is in fact the artist’s working of this background that embodies the idea of movement.

Gerard Pieter Adolfs was born on 2 January 1898 in Semarang, Central Java. He spent his youth in Java and received at home his first artistic inspirations. His father, Gerardus Cornelis Adolfs, was an architect and a versatile amateur (painter, photographer, piano and violin player as well as a pole vaulter). Adolfs studied architecture in Amsterdam. After graduating, he was drawn back to Java, were he designed houses in Yogyakarta, Solo and Surabaya. But soon he swapped the drawing pen for the dry-point, pencil and brush and from then on dedicated his whole life to painting. He was already well-known as a talented advertising illustrator, when in 1924 he was first introduced to the public of Yogyakarta as a painter, water-colourist and graphic artist. Each year Adolfs travelled for a few months, leaving his family in Surabaya. He had studios in Florence, Rome, Vienna, Budapest, Prag and (together with his Japanese friend Fujita) in Paris and exhibited his works of art internationally (Netherlands Indies, Japan, Singapore, USA, England, Holland, Sweden, Norway, France, Switzerland . . .) The main subjects of his work were scenes of Java, Bali, Japan and of North Africa (market sceneries, cock-fights, landscapes and townscapes) In 1940 - shortly before the occupation of Holland - Adolfs came back to Europe and settled in Amsterdam. On 22 February 1944, during an exhibition at the Kunstzaal Pollmann, the largest part of Adolfs‘ paintings was destroyed by the bombardment of Nijmegen. But Adolfs kept on working. He wrote and illustrated a book about his memories of Surabaya and exhibited in a lot of wellknown galleries. He lived mostly in Amsterdam - interrupted by longer stays in Scandinavia, France, Spain, Italy and North Africa. In 1967 he retired to a small village in South-Holland. On 1 February 1968, G.P. Adolfs died in s’Hertogenbosch - Holland.

Alit Sembodo Born in Magelang, 1973. He took his formal study at the Indonesia Institute of Fine Art (ISI) Yogyakarta. He has actively participated in several solo and group exhibitions in major cities in Indonesia. His work has been awarded the Pratisara Affandi Adi Karya Pize in 1999. His painting has particular and distinct characteristic of all kinds of figures and scenes. He passed away in Magelang 2003. Yet, his short lifetime has been noted by important works that captured the people’s attention. Some of the works that made in 2000 – 2001 reveal Alit Sembodo keen interest in different theme. As usual for Alit, this painting object gave rise to a sort of serial works. Most of his works demonstrate strong characteristics, narrative and descriptive crowd in all kinds of poses and scenes that filled every corner of the canvas. He never left the canvas empty. The canvas seems full with parade of masses like a colossal theater performance. Perhaps this has become Alit’s concern towards all kinds of social problems amongst the populace. He seems does not merely make social criticism towards the ruling politics, but he only goes to describe the condition in his painting through his own perspective and perception. With his combination of strong drawing techniques and simple colors, Alit’s painting illustrates an image of dramatic atmosphere of the condition.

Born in Solok, West Sumatra, 1932. Alimin began his study in painting under the guidance of S.Sudjojono and Harijadi in SIM (Young Indonesian Artists in Yogyakarta) in 1952. He moved to Jakarta in 1954. Together with Nashar, Wim Nirahua, Mardian, A. Wakidjan and Alex Wetik, he founded the Matahari Artists Association at Balai Budaya Jakarta. In 1957, he moved to Bali where Alimin taught drawing at the Department of Fine Arts and Architecture, Udayana University, Denpasar. In 1960 Alimin and Gusti Sholihin co-founded "Kedaton Studio" in Denpasar. He was the Chairman of CITRA - Indonesian Artists Association in Denpasar, Bali from 1975 to 1978. He has participated in exhibitions in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bandung and Bali. He moved to Yogyakarta in 1982 where he passed away on March 2004.

Willem Gerard Hofker Born in the city of The Hague in 1902, Willem Gerard Hofker applied for the local Academy of Fine Arts at the age of 15. Shortly after that, he moved to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam. He won second prize at the Prix de Rome in 1924. and became a well-known artist in the Netherlands during the 1930s. Hofker is mostly known for the body of work he made in Bali, where he and his wife Maria lived from 1938 until 1943. Having gone through the horror of war and Japanese camps, Willem and Maria Hofker returned to the Netherlands in 1946. The official portraits he made of queens Wilhelmina and Juliana helped to quickly regain his reputation as a portraittist. Although Hofker had a remarkable talent to capture the character of the sitter, it was merely -a way to earn a living. He was not very sociable, and often 'hid' behind his easle. The models he really loved were tireless and patient; Nature and Architecture, both in the Netherlands and abroad. The upcoming two lots, made in two consecutive years, epitomize these beloved themes. In 1936, Willem Hofker was invited by the Batavia headquarters Of the KPM (Koninklijke Paketvaart Maatschappij) to make. and personally deliver a portrait of the Dutch Queen Wilhelmina. Apart from that, he was asked to combine the portrait presentation in Batavia with a sojourn through the Dutch East Indies, to draw documentary impressions of the colony. These drawings were to be sent to Holland, enabling KPM to reproduce them for marketing purposes. Hofker initially did not have the anthropologic interest that his artist colleagues W.O.J. Nieuwenkamp, Watter Spies, Rudolf Bonnet and Miguel Covarrubias had displayed, but he was well aware that he Should draw and describe the culture, people and architecture of the Dutch East Indies in detail for the KPM; consequently, Willem and his wife Maria prepared well for their journey in 1938. picking up some Malay words and sentences, and reading books by Karl With, Gregor Krause, and Miguel Covarrubias. Hofker needed to regain his powerful, decisive touch. Reading his letters and diaries, he was inspired to draw and paint numerous Balinese temples, palaces, and bales although most of them have not been traced (yet). After 4 months in Bali, Hofker had already produced 85 drawings and 15 oils. I feel so at home here. It is strange that all these beautiful things are still made here every day. Sometimes one is reminded of the Italian Renaissance or Roman reliefs of animals used as decorations in cathedrals, on capitols and in other places; this thousand year-oid culture has achieved the same high standard of visual imagery. (Willem Hofker, July 1, 1938, in: Hofker/Gianni Orsini, Willem Gerard Hofker, Uitgeverij de Kunst, 2013* p. 28) The split gate (or candi bentar) we see in the painting, indeed reminds us of the way Renaissance architects like Filippo Brunelleschi (1377-1446) coded the early Renaissance architecture; structural elements (the red brick in the split gate) are coded in a different colour from ornaments (the grey. decoratively sculpted elements on the top and sides of the split gate). A candi bentar marks the entrance into the outer sanctum of the Sukawati temple. A paraduksa or kori, positioned behind the candi bentar, marks the entrance to the inner sanctum, A paraduksa is not split, but closed with a stepped crown on top. It is often consisting of a main paraduksa or kori agung, with a wooden entrance door. only to be used by priests and gods, and two side gates. to be used by casual visitors. ` The painting. now in the splendid condition Hofker 'intended still exudes the grandeur of the royal family of Sukawati. It is remarkable how Hofker depicted the candi bentar, and did not create more depth by also painting the paraduksa behind it. Perhaps it is a conscious symbol of Hofker's mindful spirit -a modest man, who had just arrived in Bali, and was awe-struck by an ancient culture- not having entered the main sanctum of Bali just yet. The Candi Bentar is situated only 20 km from where Hofker was living at the time, and is in fact a double guarded entrance gate to Kori Agung, a second gate with a closed door in the middle that is made of red brick. It is slightly visible behind the tree branches on the right of the painting. With a few red brushstrokes, hofker marked the spot between green of the sketchy trees. The present lot probably the first oil painting Hofker produced in Bali. It clearly shows he was out of practice, which is easily explained: in the preceding months, during the voyage to the Indies and his stay in Java, he was almost entirely unable to paint. His letters and journals suggest that he made quite a number of drawings and paintings of Balinese temples and palaces, but unfortunately few seems to have survived.

Affandi

Beginning in 1955 Affandi taught at the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts in Yogyakarta. After participating in International exhibitions in Brazil and Italy, Affandi received a 1957 scholarship from the U. S. government to study arts education. He was made an Honorary Professor of Painting by Ohio State University, and in 1974 was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Singapore. He also received the Peace Award from the Dag Hammarskjoeld Foundation in 1977, and the title of Grand Maestro in Florence, Italy. Affandi never learned to use a palette, dislikes brushes. Instead, he squeezes paint on to his thumb, then smears it around the canvas. He will often spend a week studying a subject, but the actual painting seldom takes longer than 90 furious minutes. 'After about an hour,' he says, 'I usually feel my emotions declining. It's better to stop then. The painting is finished.' Affandi never thought much about painting styles. His attention was focused more on basic principles, such as his love for what is natural. Painting an object of nature, according to Affandi “is like making a garden. Everything grows. Leaves, animals, human, moving, showing that life is.” Natural object, to him, are a manifestation of life. That conclusion, he also said, started from the feelings of being minuscule vis-a-vis the cosmos and fear mixed with awe when facing nature. Though Affandi only painted what he observed and never approached his works from any kind of philosophical or analytical starting point, he was particularly fond of Bali and Javanese culture. There are some works that use natural landscapes as their subject matter. Affandi especially liked to depict seascapes, or coastal landscapes with fishing boats or an object of drying fish. However, these works are far from being naturalistic, as they are hardly related to the matter of sky color, as affected by the sunlight. The natural landscapes seen in Affandi’s paintings do not show any “realistic effect”, either. It is generally known that Affandi’s landscapes – as well as other paintings – reveal lines (the result of paint applied directly on the canvas using the painter’s hands instead of brushes) that area arabesque and staccato in nature ant rhythm.

Internationally celebrated Painter and Sculptor, Teguh Ostenrik holds a Master Degree in Fine Arts Hochschule der Kuenste, West Berlin , Germany. He has had more than one hundred solo and group exhibitions in the USA , Europe (France, the Netherlands, Germany),Australia and throughout Asia . His art works and commissioned projects are collected by many private collectors, museums, international institutions and major corporations. Ostenrik’s 24 years work of art has been documented in Transcending Time,a full coloured 250 pages book, wrote by Art Historian Barbara Asboth. He was a guest lecturer in the Beijing Central Academy of Art in 2006. For three consecutive years (2006-2008) Teguh is a jury member of China Asean Youth Art Creativity Contest in Nanning – China, a drawing competition with 3000 participants. Mahyuddin S. the naturalist painter was born in 1924 in Bukittinggi, Sumatra. Since childhood, he was already very fond of painting and developed his skill and techniques under guidance of noted painters in his born city. In 1948, he held his joint exhibition in Bukittinggi with painters from all over Sumatra. In 1950, he moved to Jakarta for work and continued his study at the Perguruan Tinggi Djurnalistik Institute of Journalism until 1955. In 1956, he held a joint exhibition in at Bapenas Building, Jakarta. He worked in Unilever Jakarta from 1957 until 1961 in which he decided to devote his full attention in painting. He continued to hold several painting exhibitions, among the successful one was in 1968 at Hotel Indonesia. In 1969 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 1971, he held exhibition in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. In 1972, he held his exhibition in Bremen, West Germany, Amsterdam Holland, and Vienna, Austria. In 1973, he travelled again to Europe and performed the exhibitions in West Berlin and Frankfurt. In 1974, he held his last exhibition in Singapore again. Mahyuddin is a naturalist painter who conveys quietness, peacefulness and grandeur in his paintings. His works have been in the collection of many important art collections in Indonesia and abroad.
