SCREENRIGHTS

"One has to look at things from two very opposite angles, you need to look at the minutia, the detail, the atomic level, how things will be built, how a storyline is built. At the same time, you want to imagine how the final piece will look and how that will create an effect on the viewer. For architecture, I feel the same. You want to be respectful of each piece of the design, and how it will interact and how the narrative will continue throughout the structure... You get to know the main characters, you get to know storyline, there's no jarring, it's fluid. And the same thing applies in terms of where you create the flow within a building, whether it's the light or the passage or how you move through the building... those things can relate easily to eachother"

This directory has been created to facilitate the entry into the screen industries in Sheffield and provide a physical resource for established screen industry professionals to get into contact with potential connections and collaborators. Along with the Screen Rights website, it will aim to help break down the barriers to entry, and make film and creative media more accessible - uplifting unheard voices. Within this guide you will find inspirational stories, resources, courses, events and a directory of the local industry.

This project has been funded by S.I.G.N. (Screen Industries Growth Network) in collaboration with, Live Works, The University of Sheffield School of Architceture and Diaspora Multimedia Hub.

The Diaspora Multimedia Hub first launched in April 2019 and is a creative collaboration between ISRAAC, Eryal TV and Sheffield Hallam University. Sheffield Hallam University is supporting the project by providing industry level skills training and facilities, including a broadcast studio, camera equipment and editing suites based in Sheffield at Vestry Hall.

“Our goal is to document the untold stories of the Somali community in Sheffield. With a long-term view to expand the project to include Sheffield’s many migrant communities. We feel it’s important to preserve people’s stories as a rich archival legacy for current and future generations of Sheffield to enjoy, celebrate and have access to.

The Diaspora Multimedia Hub runs a Summer Film School. We are taking our aspiring filmmakers through an intensive 8-week course where they will produce their own shorts. We have been commissioned by the internationally renowned Sheffield Doc/Fest to create a series of short films which explore how a community responds in a time of change.”

Yasin Hersi is a local filmmaker in Sheffield, specialising in short films and telling unheard stories from communities, including his own community who run the Israac Somali Community Association. Having moved to Sheffield over 20 years ago he has since set up the Diaspora Multimedia Hub and Eryal TV.

After moving from Somaliland in 2002 Yasin joined Israac and started managing their website and making short films. He later enrolled at Sheffield Hallam University to study IT management.

Subsequently, Yasin set up Somaliland TV and continued to be passionate about film. Somaliland TV later evolved into Eryal TV, which was launched in 2017. Eryal TV is one of the fastest growing Somali TV networks ever, reaching a wide audience within a very short space of time and still continuing to grow in 2022.

YASIN HERSI

LEAD OF DMH / ERYAL TV

In 2019 Yasin began to run the Diaspora Multimedia Hub after being approached by Sheffield Hallam Media Department and receiving funding. They run a summer film school every year where people of any age or background can join them to make their own short films and documentaries.

Mohammed’s journey began in 1977, attending the premier of The Message in Leicester Square. Upon exiting he promised himself to become a film director. Mohammed also had a pas sion for science and as there were little opportunities to get into film he studied engineering and then decided he would start making films. He wanted to tell stories, however he didn’t know if he would be good at film making. After attending a couple of courses his teachers recommenced he continued.

He got a book listing the 500 film production companies in the UK and made a listing of the ones he wanted to work for. He went to each company and sent them his CV. Eventually this resulted in a full time job working at a documentary production company.

His hard work and talent meant he soon became an editor. Three years later he had his own documentary broadcast on TV for Channel 4, and soon was added to their list of approved editors.

MOHAMMED DERIA FILMMAKER AND EDITOR

Mohammed is passionate about getting young people into film to uplift their voices. He believes it is important to always make a link between professionalism and community activism. This goes along with his belief that multiple communities and voices need to be heard in order to be understood and appreciated, for everyone to learn to live more harmoniously.
