Welcome to the Letchworth Centre For Healthy Living We are a pioneering and award-winning charity – a centre of excellence –unique in the size and scope of the programmes we offer to enhance health and wellbeing and address pain and chronic illness. Our 8-acre grounds with its ancient pine trees and century-old buildings provide a very special atmosphere of tranquillity and support.

How can the Centre help you?

At the Centre you can be confident of working with highly qualified and experienced health care professionals on whose expertise you can rely. We offer: • A wide range of complementary therapies including osteopathy, acupuncture, naturopathy, homeopathy, hypnotherapy, massage and Shiatsu • A large counselling service – and a low-cost scheme – which works with individuals, couples, families, and children to help them cope with emotional and life problems such as stress, depression and anxiety.

• A programme of over 80 weekly classes for all ages and abilities as well as for those recovering from surgery and serious illness – including a huge choice of Yoga and Pilates, T’ai Chi, Alexander Technique and Mindfulness.

• A new free lunchtime lecture programme • A new programme of workshops which provide introductions to a rich range of approaches to wellbeing

The effectiveness of complementary approaches People using Centre services have reported benefits and improvement to their physical and mental health – which have frequently been life-changing.

Working with the Community Often in partnership with statutory and voluntary organisations, we actively seek funding from grant-making trusts and other sources of financial support to underpin the costs of programmes for older people and for carers. We are grateful to the NHS in Hertfordshire, to Hertfordshire County Council, to Comic Relief, to Hertfordshire Community Foundation and to North Hertfordshire District Council, amongst others, for their support.

We need your help...

As a charity, we cover our running costs from income generated by our classes, clinic and counselling services. However, this alone does not meet either the large capital expenditure involved in ensuring that our very special 100-year old buildings and large site continue to be watertight, sound and otherwise fit for purpose. Nor does our income cover the development or delivery of the bespoke programmes we run and hope to expand on for older people, carers and other vulnerable groups in our community.

In 2014, our 30th birthday year, our community was recognised by a prestigious national award ‘Outstanding Contribution to the Community’ by CAM, the professional journal for complementary practitioners.

COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINE COMPLEMENTARY THERAPIES COUNSELLING Our clinic offers a broad range of complementary approaches provided by outstanding experienced and well-qualified practitioners. Patients regularly report that they use these approaches to relieve many physical problems as well as to help reduce stress and to generally enhance wellbeing – often in conjunction with conventional medical treatment. Acupuncture has been practised in China and the East for some 2,000 years. Human health, according to acupuncture theory, is dependant upon the smooth flow of the body’s vital force (called ‘chi’ or ‘qi’) which moves through channels in the body called meridians. The insertion of fine needles at points along these meridians initiates the body’s own healing response.

Our patients have reported benefits for a broad range of conditions including IBS, headaches, backache, sciatica, arthritis and musculo-skeletal problems such as RSI and tennis elbow; gynaecological conditions such as PMT and painful periods and menopausal problems; prostate problems; Bell’s Palsy and trigeminal neuralgia; stress, insomnia and anxiety– as well as conditions which have defied a conventional diagnosis.

Homeopathy is a system of medicine which stimulates our body’s own capacity to heal itself through the use of greatly diluted natural substances whose effects are painstakingly matched with the symptoms we ourselves are experiencing.

It takes account of mental and emotional as well as the physical aspects of our condition and is without side-effects. Patients report benefits in skin, respiratory and digestive disorders as well as in migraine and arthritic conditions.

The mind influence on the body is well known.

Hypnotherapists – contrary to the derivation of the name (for ‘hypnos’ means ‘sleep’) do not put people to sleep, but instead bring them to an altered state of awareness and deep relaxation. In this state, people can frequently access understandings of the causes of behaviour, of past feelings, and of their deepest desires.

Hypnotherapy can be especially useful in changing addictive behaviour such as smoking, substance abuse and overeating, as well as in removing emotional blocks to a more fulfilling life.

Touch is one of the most basic human acts, affecting the body, the emotions and the mind.

SPORTS INJURY & REMEDIAL MASSAGE goes deep into the muscles

to disperse adhesions (muscle knots) and inflammation. Patients report increased joint flexibility, reduced stiffness and enhanced healing of damaged tissues.

HOT STONE MASSAGE uses warmed smooth basalt stones to apply deep heat to key points of the body. This eases tight muscles and produces profound relaxation.

WARM BAMBOO MASSAGE uses hollow bamboo canes to introduce warmth to ease muscle tension and aid relaxation.

Shiatsu is an ancient Japanese form of massage literally meaning ‘finger pressure’. It is based upon the theory that good health derives from the free flow of energy through channels or meridians – blockages of which can lead to illness. The Shiatsu therapist gently presses on points along these meridians or applies gentle stretching to the body.

Patients report it beneficial in reducing stress, anxiety, tension and in insomnia – although it is also used with success in easing stiffness and pain.

Reiki – meaning ‘universal life energy’—is a form of healing developed in Japan based again upon the principle that energy blockages can lead to illhealth. It is believed that this healing electro-magnetic energy can be transmitted through the hands of the practitioner to the areas of the body needing treatment.

Patients find Reiki calming and deeply relaxing – and research findings suggest that it can help in pain relief, depression, anxiety, stress and fatigue.

Foot treatments have been used in India, Egypt and China for thousands of years.

Contemporary reflexology is based upon the principle that areas on the feet are linked to our internal organs and functional systems and that application of pressure to points on the feet can stimulate energy flow to the corresponding area of the body.

Patients report that it has helped reduce stress, anxiety and fatigue. There is some evidence that it can be effective in treating pre-menstrual symptoms and headache and that it can be of benefit to people with multiple sclerosis.

COUNSELLING

We have a large team of counsellors at the Centre, both skilled and experienced, qualified practitioners as well as trainee counsellors on placement.

Our team of 14 qualified counsellors come from many different backgrounds and have qualifications in various approaches, including play therapy, young people’s counselling, couple’s counselling and family therapy. Some counsellors are BACP Accredited and others are working towards their accreditation. The team includes two qualified clinical supervisors and, in addition, we have a hypnotherapist who also offers neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) and hypno-CBT. Our team of 10 trainee counsellors on placement are studying at various universities and are in their final years of training and practice under in-house supervision. Some have reached qualification and are on placement to complete to Masters Degree.

Our low cost counselling, which is delivered in the most part by the counsellors on placement, is designed to give access to counselling to those people on benefits, a low wage or in difficult financial circumstances. We provide an initial assessment for each referral which is performed by a qualified counsellor. We do not impose a limit to the number of sessions but allow counselling to come to a natural end which meets the needs of the client.

Throughout the counselling service as a whole, we work with many different issues including: abuse, anxiety, bereavement, depression, domestic violence, low self confidence, parent/child relationships, relationship issues, self harm, and recovery from substance misuse.

All team members hold current DBS (CRB) checks and professional liability insurance. They are all individual members of a professional governing body. The counselling service as a whole is an organisational member of the British Association for Psychotherapy and Counselling (BACP) and operates according to their guidelines.

Our low cost counselling service has a cost of £20 for the initial assessment and £15 for a one to one session. Regular fees are £40 for individual sessions, £50 for couples and £50 for family sessions.

In addition, we are pleased to offer sessions exploring the art of communicating within relationships. Initial assessment is £35 and a course of 4-6 sessions is £50 per session.

Our counselling hours are Monday to Friday 09.00 to 20.30 and Saturday 09.00 to 15.30.

Research suggests that mindfulness strengthens the immune system and develops areas of the brain associated with wellbeing. MBSR ONE-TO-ONE

COST £360 including workbook and CDs .This course is designed for those who cannot attend our group MBSR course and consists of a pre-course orientation over the telephone and 8 hour-long sessions held at the Centre at a time and date to be mutually arranged. A non-refundable deposit of £20 is required before the pre-course orientation with the balance of the full fees due before start of course.

PILATES Beginners These classes will review Pilates principles during the first session and then will cover basic Pilates exercises.

NB: Certain health problems could preclude participation in Pilates classes.

Beginners/Improvers Basic exercises with more advanced options for those who have been studying Pilates for longer. Pilates principles will be reviewed in the first session.

Improvers Suitable for those who have been at beginners level for more than 3 terms or by agreement with the class teacher. The programme offers a mixture of basic Pilates exercises with progressions to take students up to intermediate level exercises.

Intermediate These classes are suitable for students without injuries and illnesses and by agreement with the class teacher.

PILATES ON THE BALL

Exercising ‘on the ball’ – which continually moves slightly beneath you as you work – can also increase overall flexibility and mobility. And it’s such fun to do! (You will need to provide your own ball.)
