The Art of Jewelry and Sculpture

Diana worked with Richard Waller the acclaimed frame maker from Middleburg, Virginia and together they designed prototypes for frames which would showcase her necklaces. Using the Tuscan Tabernacle Frame as found in the quatrocento the two were able to establish a prototype for these and future works. Diana’s jewelry is wearable art. When it is not being worn it is displayed as traditional art would be: on a table in the living room or hanging on the wall. By weighting the frames on the bottom Mr. Waller's frames are stabile enough to sit safely on any surface. They may also be hung on the wall.

fox necklace

This necklace was inspired by medieval ornament found on column capitals in churches throughout the British Isles.

Animals and the folk lore surrounding them were an important part of the lives of people of the Middle Ages. They were filled with mythic and religious symbolism. The Fox comes from my sculpture, Under Cover, and in both I am drawn to the sense of mystery behind this enigmatic creature.

Grasshopper necklace

This was inspired by my fascination

with the micro world. How much of that world do we miss because it is inaccessible to us visually. Here two grasshoppers’ antennae reach over a vase to intertwine with each other. I chose to design this with a reference to the Art Deco period with a stylized geometrical design.

Necklace - Two 18k yellow gold grasshopper rest on an 18k white gold vase, with a base and lip of 18k yellow gold, pave set with (18) 2mm yellow sapphires, (26) yellow sapphires pave set on top. The grasshoppers eyes are 2mm sapphires and their antenna come together to form an arch over the vase as well as the gold neckwire, and end in an 18k yellow gold toggle clasp. Earrings - 18k yellow gold domes of (74) 2mm round pave set yellow sapphires, suspended from an 18k yellow gold arm with an 18k white gold accent (as seen with honeycomb) The Art of Jewelry and Sculpture

Temptation necklace

A vervet monkey sits playfully

under a tree. Its tail and the branches of the tree mimic each other. Temptation comes from the sculpture of the same name. A vervet monkey sits under a tree of pearls and cognac diamonds which I have chosen to make into a necklace. Matching earrings of gold stems with pearls and diamonds are offered as pendant earrings.

Necklace - 18k white gold tree and base, with buds of freshwater pearls and cognac diamond accents, 18k yellow gold monkey (16 freshwater rice pearls, 1 freshwater boulder pearl, 84 champagne diamonds, .015ct each) Earrings - 18k white gold twigs with buds of freshwater pearls and cognac diamonds (4 freshwater pearls, 24 x .015 cognac diamonds) 12

Pear necklace

Pears are nature’s

perfect form. Pear Necklace is a study in their textures and shadows: forms within forms, shapes and colors created by the play of light. Pear Necklace comes from the sculpture Still Life With Pears. When I chose to study Still Life with Pears as a piece of jewelry I found that I could explore a more magnified version of the fruit. What I found interesting was the play of shapes and forms within the shadows. I chose to micro pave graduated sapphires to accentuate this. The leaf and twigs were integral to creating the "whole" look of sensuous unending line.

Necklace - Two 18k gold pears, one rose gold and one yellow gold, pave set with 35 pave set sapphires per pear: (3) 1.75mm, (18) 2.0mm, (14) 2.25mm, each bud contains (6) 1.25mm bead set yellow sapphires, accented with a white gold leaf with veins of (42) 1.25mm pave set orange sapphire. The overlapping white gold stems make up the necklace, adorned with buds of carnelian with yellow sapphire accents, ending in an integrated clasp. Earrings - 18k white gold twigs with buds of (4) carnelian bullet cabochons and (24) 1.25mm yellow sapphires.

Honeycomb necklace

Honey bees are nature’s

architects. How incredibly rich in texture and structure is the honeycomb with each cell designed to receive one drop of honey. Honey Comb comes from the sculpture Honeycomb.

Necklace - 18k yellow gold honeycomb set with (13) honey colored hexagon citrines, adorned with 18k yellow gold bee, (48) 1.25mm pave set yellow sapphire wings, (44) mixed size orange-to-yellow gradient pave sapphire body, yellow sapphire stinger and (2) 2mm carnelian cabochon eyes. The necklace is made up of gradient color citrine beads accented by a honeycomb element, finished with an 18k yellow gold toggle clasp. Earrings - 18k yellow gold dome of (74) 2mm round yellow sapphires, suspended from an 18k yellow gold arm with an 18k white gold accent.

Pointer

Bird dogs are testament

to the marriage of art and science. Pointers and setters each have their own style but both know what they were put on this earth to do. With innate knowledge they hunt, point, honor and if you are lucky will retrieve the birds you ask them to find. I have sculpted the pointer in a classic pose where she has stopped on a dime to point the bird none of us can yet see. What captivates me about pointers is their athleticism. There is not one ounce of fat on this dog and every muscle is defined and working.

Setter

The english setter

has evolved over time to be both elegant and agile. They are regal and handsome with coats which are usually long and silky. I chose to sculpt one of our dogs, Happy, at the moment that he is offering the quail to me. He is proud and gentle and knows that he has done what was asked of him.

Peacock

I have studied the peacock for years

and realized that its fanned tail actually detracts from the pure line of its silhouette. I chose, therefore, to show the tail "at rest" and realized the beautiful classic S shape of the form allowed me to study the whole. Using a rich gold patina stippled over the entire composition enabled me to emphasize its stylized geometry and make reference to the Art Deco period.

Loloma Pear Loloma Pear is done as an homage to

Charles Loloma, the famous native American artist who played with the idea of fractured objects in jewelry: almost cubist in concept. Here I have taken a pear and done half in bronze and the other half in pieces of painted wood placed in a bronze frame. Perhaps the questions it poses are as important as the piece itself.

Parakeet with Berries

Parakeet and Berries

was done after honing down what it was about my sculpture Parakeets that intrigued me so. It was the fact that these tiny creatures can sit on limbs of trees one moment and manipulate them the next. Here a small parakeet reaches with all its strength to pluck a berry within its reach. Bronze 16"H x 14"L x 9"D

Mandarin

The mandarin

duck seems almost too pretty to be outside. I chose it to accentuate the riffle all ducks create while swimming on still waters. One cannot disassociate the duck from the pattern following it on ponds, lakes and rivers. By elevating it on a stand I was able to imagine that what lies beneath might be equally as elegant and memorable.

Trumpeter and Dragonfly Swans are inherently graceful.

I chose to accentuate this grace by having her reach effortlessly to intercept the dragonfly from behind. I placed the bird on an elliptical base: suggesting the ripping water which would frame the entire composition. Bronze 13"H x 34"W x 23"D
