Pinja Ilmann, the Rotary Club of Galston’s exchange student, has come to the end of her year as the Club’s exchange student from Finland.

Pinja has been an outstanding ambassador both for Finland and Australia which has been her home for the past twelve months.

During her year Pinja has stayed with several families to throughout the district who have introduced her to the diversity of our country. Pinja gave a captivating overview of her experiences at her last Rotary meeting. She has always been willing to help in the May Rotary events especially the Original Giant Book Fair which will be held at the Galston Community Centre Arcadia Road Galston on the 27th and 28th July. Pinja was fascinated with the vast number and variety of books which will be offered for sale.

She will be taking some wonderful books showcasing Australia back to Finland.

The Giant Book Fair is celebrating it’s sixteenth year and is getting bigger every year. You will be able to come along and browse the many books, CD’s, records, videos on offer as well as enjoy a cuppa in the coffee shop. There is a special area dedicated to children with many books, games and jigsaws etc. The Giant Book Fair is the major fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Galston. Proceeds go towards the assistance given to local community needs as well as national and international projects and disaster relief.

Waiters Workshop

It is with great sadness that the Galston High School community announces the passing of Pamela Harding, our much respected and loved School Counsellor.

Pam was counsellor at Galston High School for over 14 years and during that time assisted students and their families in a variety of situations. She had also worked one day a week at Dural Public School for many years.

Pam was a wonderfully positive and cheerful person who was a highly valued member of our school community. She was very caring, calm and level-headed; always ready to assist anyone in need. She was always an advocate for the students while never being judgemental and had a high degree of compassion and empathy.

Pam loved Galston High School and all its students and staff. Her wise counsel to many members of the Student Welfare team will be sorely missed. She supported the staff as well as students and loved to celebrate joys with them such as births of children. It was Pam who reinstated the staff “flowers fund” to ensure that support was obvious. She made very close friendships throughout her time at our school. Her dedication and professionalism towards students, families and staff will be greatly missed.

Pam was a member of the local community for over 20 years and was an active participant in the local cricket club; coaching, scoring and umpiring and was well known by many Galston families.

We can only learn from Pam’s loss that life is short and in order to make the most of it, we need to experience everyday positively and to try to see the best in everyone and every situation.

Pam’s funeral was held at St Stephen’s Uniting Church in Macquarie Street, Sydney. A number of very moving tributes were made by her family, friends and colleagues. Our thoughts and best wishes are with the Harding family at this very sad time.

The Galston Club Galston is providing this opportunity for young people aged between 16-35 to gain knowledge and experience as they seek work as a waiter or waitress.

The workshop will run over 2 alternate days Tuesday 6 August 9.00-noon & Thursday 8 August 9.00 – 1.00pm at a cost of $30.

You will be assessed and provided with a Galston Club Certificate of Excellence in the Foundations of Hospitality Service. The 4 top participants will be provided with their first paid job at the Club on the 7th September.

You must come to the workshop dressed for the ‘job’ and with notebook and pen.

Council’s Economic Development and Marketing Team will seek out business owners setting up a new business in the Sydney Hills and arm them with valuable information that could help their business grow.

Economic Development and Marketing Manager John Dean said Council’s business visits program had proved popular over the years.

“Our new start-up program takes our existing business visits program to a new level,” Mr Dean said.

“Business owners have always been welcome to book a free one-on-one information session with myself or Council’s Economic Development officer Stephen Garrard - and get access to demographic information, population forecasts and databases that can help them connect with other businesses and facilitate marketing opportunities,” Mr Dean said.

Mr Dean said that when a new business comes to the area, the owner often wants to find out what other businesses are in their area, or how they can connect with their target market.

“We can empower businesses with local knowledge quickly, creating a smoother transition to the community,” he said.

Mr Dean said that helping local businesses grow could build their capacity to create some of the 47,000 new jobs targeted for The Sydney Hills under the NSW Government’s Metropolitan Strategy for Sydney.

“Creating more local job opportunities means giving residents meaningful employment options close to home, and a better quality of life through reduced travel times,” he said.

“We’re proud of our commercial centre Norwest Business Park, and we want to continue to see our commercial, industrial and retail centres grow throughout the Sydney Hills.”

Dural Bowlers Out and About with the Dural Bowlers Men and women bowlers at Dural Country Club have been out and about as well as maintaining the programme at the club. The Mixed Triples were finalised recently after many highly contested matches. The winners, Peda Ritchie, Doug Farlow, Jenny Green, Doug Farlow and Skip Jenny Green Peda Ritchie, Winners defeated Leone Lesslie’s team of Keith McGill and Tom Trovato. The mixed events are always popular at DCC. Nsw State Carnival Each year the NSW women bowlers meet for the State Carnival. This year over 1000 ladies travelled to Bomaderry on the south coast and for a change had good weather for the round robin competition and the final play-offs held on the Thursday/ Friday. Only two teams from Dural went this year and had considerable success although not getting into the final sixteen as the best from the state are among the 1000. Dural Sport & Leisure Centre Get Active Dural Sport & Leisure Centre, as an arm of Dural Baptist Church, exists to support the local community and others in less fortunate areas.

We currently sponsor 16 Aboriginal people from Halls Creek living next door to us in Dural. They attend Pacific Hills Christian School and William Clarke College. This program is having a huge impact on all involved.

In June/July this year we have a group travelling to the Kimberley on a five week 4WD trip, where they will spend time in Aboriginal communities, including Halls Creek.

Ten years ago we started a journey with the Solomon Islands.

Futsal in the Solomon’s now has over 2000 players. The Solomon Islands have qualified for two Futsal World Cups and has several players who have secured contracts to play overseas. They are still heavily supported by Dural.

Recently we have had teams travelling to the Islands for music clinics, consulting for building design and construction and ongoing support for their Futsal and Christian Life programs.

Our latest initiative is a Men’s Shed. It is now fully equipped and running with a huge variety of machinery. It provides a meeting place for men and allows them to become involved in many community projects. For example, The Shed recently built uniform lockers for a local Fire Brigade.

Our ability to do all this is partly due to the success of our sport programs involving so many people from the Hills region. 100% of the profits are reinvested in programs for the local community and those we support in the Solomon Islands and the Kimberley.

Our Futsal (indoor soccer) competitions are amongst the largest in Australia and we are gearing up for another summer season commencing September. Futsal is FIFA’s official 5-a-side, small court

game. We have competitions for 6yrs to adults covering girls, boys, ladies, men & mixed teams. New competitions are being started this year for early morning business and over 45s.

Dural also plays in the elite NSW Futsal Premier League and is home base of the Dural Warriors. The Warriors Academy provides a development pathway of structured training for local youth to enter this elite level of competition. Dural currently boasts 5 members of the FutsalRoos, Australia’s Futsal team.

Netball is one of Australia’s largest participation sports and is our 2nd sport at Dural Sport & Leisure Centre. Teams play on full size courts, unique at the time of building, under the same rules as outdoor netball. Ladies and Mixed teams can play all year round with the Ladies Daytime competition(s), offering free Crèche services & a Cafe.

Summer sees a huge influx of junior teams from the surrounding associations who use the indoor competition to maintain their skills and fitness in the netball “off” season.

Each Friday night in school term, Dural Baptist Church holds its weekly youth evening called Chicago. This evening is for Year 6 to Year 12 youth and over 100 children come for the Friday evening social interaction and activities. The leaders then divide the children into groups where lots of topics pertinent to their age are introduced and discussed. This ministry is growing at a rapid rate – a good problem to have; offering the youth from our district a safe environment in which to learn and socialise.

Kidsmania will be run again in the upcoming school holidays.

It is a school holiday program for children from K-6 where lots of games, craft, sport, drama and other activities fill the day.

The time has come around for making scarecrows again. The scarecrows will be gathering for their ninth annual judging at The Hornsby Shire Bushland Festival, in Fagan Park, on Sunday, 15th September.

There are four categories – Traditional, Theme, Schools and Fantasy/Contemporary. Prizes will be awarded for the first three places in each category. The Peoples Choice Award has been sponsored by The Bendigo Bank and the Schools first prize by Bunnings Warehouse.

To make a traditional scarecrow: Tie two poles together in a cross formation using the longer one for the body and the shorter one for the arms. Thread the arm pole through a shirt or coat sleeve and the upright pole through one of the trouser legs. Fasten the buttons and stuff your scarecrow with straw for an authentic look or alternatively stuff with plastric bags or anything which will stand up to the weather. Close the arm and leg openings with string and tie the waist to the pole. Stuff an old cushion cover or something similar for a head and paint on the face. Fasten an old battered hat on the head. Boots or shoescan be tied on the feet. Other accessories add charm to your scarecrow.

A few other ideas for your creations: TV Characters – Animals – Nursery Rhyme Characters – Groups – Film Stars – Children’s TV Characters – Cartoon Characters – Fairies and Pixies – Tradesmen – and many more.

It’s been an interesting month with clients, and one in particular who has inspired me to write this article. A very short version of the story is she wanted to lose weight, she said she knew all the right things to do but for a multitude of REASONS she never did them.

This is an extremely common problem, and not just for people wanting to lose weight. The No. 1 reason this happens is not having a clearly defined goal. Let’s look at an example.

Say you want to lose 25kgs, but is that the true goal? Or is it perhaps that you want to feel healthier, or prevent the onset of a disease? Or is it maybe that you want a partner, or to re-ignite the passion in your current relationship? Perhaps you want more energy, more self-confidence, or perhaps you want to fit back into the clothes in your wardrobe or you have a special event coming up.

So let’s look at how you can do this.

1. Ask yourself questions - this is to get a really clear picture about what it is you want to achieve. The types of questions you should ask are: “What’s the reason (or purpose) for this?”

“What outcome do I want to achieve?”

“How will my life look when I achieve that?”

“What’s holding me back, and stopping me from achieving that?”

2. Get out of your comfort zone - It’s way too easy in your comfort zone, even if it’s not exactly how you would like your life to be. You’ve found it’s simpler to ‘settle’ and ‘make do’ rather than strive for what you really want. It’s not until you drop yourself out of your comfort zone that any real change can happen.

3. Know your strengths and weaknesses - we all have strengths and weaknesses. Acknowledge what they are. If you know what you are dealing with you can manage it, however if you are playing in the dark you will continually find yourself being ambushed and sabotaged.

4. Prioritise your time - a clearly defined goal won’t just happen. If you want it badly enough you will find the time you need to achieve it. Time is our most important commodity, are you managing and using your time effectively?

The Hills District VIEW Club The Hills District VIEW Club backs new campaign to boost membership and to increase community volunteering in the Hills District.

Service clubs such as VIEW, Lions, Men’s Sheds, Rotary, CWA, APEX, Zonta and Legacy make a positive difference in every community around Australia.

New research by the DoSomething! Charity shows that these 8 major service clubs now have 180,000 members in 4,913 local clubs around Australia.

“Week in and week out, service club members are volunteering and working to make communities like the Hills District a better place for us all,” says Jenny Hobson, Secretary of the Hills District VIEW Club.

In an effort to generate more members for service clubs, the DoSomething! Charity has launched a national campaign called ‘Join The Club’. Throughout May, the campaign will be encouraging Australians to join a local service club. Galston Village Pharmacy held their annual Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea on the 23rd May 2013. It was a miserable wet rainy day but this did not stop the local community from coming out and supporting them on this special event.

What a successful day it was! $2,500 was raised for the Cancer Council and it was not possible without the help of the many volunteers, everyone who baked and brought in cakes, sandwiches and biscuits, and all those who sold raffle tickets, not to mention the many kind and generous donations of all the local businesses, nurseries, clubs and restaurants.

Riding for the Disabled Tall Timbers Centre – Volunteers needed It has been a busy few months at RDA Tall Timbers with our Semester 1 program riders finishing up at the end of June. Semester 1 also saw the finishing of the new Life Skills Shed creating a learning space which will allow the centre to expand their programs for people with disabilities in the future. A Regional Dressage Day will be held at the centre on 30th June with riders from Tall Timbers and local Associate riders attending as a qualification event for the 2013 RDANSW State Dressage Championships which will be held at Sydney International Equestrian Centre August 24 & 25.

All the Coaches and volunteers are looking forward to welcoming new riders in the Semester 2 program with an increase in numbers of volunteers needed on both Mondays and Wednesday mornings to cater for the new groups. Horses’ Birthday Charity Lunch

After a lengthy period of planning and building, the latest project at RDA Tall Timbers Centre at Box Hill was officially opened on Sunday 16th June by Ray Williams MP. The Project’s main aim is to provide a meeting room with disabled facilities to run a Life Skills and activities Program for people with disabilities. The project was funded through a grant from the NSW Government Community Building Partnership program as well as the fundraising efforts of long time supporter Jim Moreland and donations from some very generous individuals and businesses. Jim had an opportunity to thank everyone who assisted with the project after which he joined Ray Williams to cut the ribbon. The Centre also took the opportunity to thank Jim for all his hard work in co-ordinating the build by presenting him with a certificate and with the unveiling of the building’s new name “Horses and More...land”. Following the ceremony the guests were able to tour the new building as well as enjoy a delicious afternoon tea on a lovely winter afternoon.

Warrah Welcomes a New Farmer!

Warrah has recently welcomed a new Farm Manager to Warrah Biodynamic Farm at Dural. The Farm is the only certified biodynamic farm in the Sydney metropolitan area. Rob Greatholder has a Diploma in Biodynamic Horticulture from Emerson College in the UK, and spent some years working on biodynamic farms and market gardens. He is thrilled to have taken on the task at Warrah.

Warrah Farm grows a range of fruit, vegetables and eggs that are sold through the Warrah Shop and to other distributers. Rob and the Warrah Farm team have recently planted peas, leeks, kale, cabbage and spinach. Planting was just before the recent heavy rains so the timing was perfect! The Farm team is now preparing for the coming season, fixing fences, fox proofing the chicken houses and making useful tools and equipment that will help them with their work once the weather warms up and the days get longer.

The Farm is currently producing lots of winter salad mix, which is popular with customers. There is also an abundance of oranges, grapefruit and lemons. All Warrah’s delicious citrus fruits are sold at the Farm Shop.

Warrah Farm Shop is open to the public Monday to Friday 8.30am – 5.30pm and stocks a full range of ONLY organic and biodynamic produce including milk, cheeses, eggs, fruits, vegetables and dry goods. Gentle rain patters on the rim of my old straw hat, and mingles with the muffled clucking of hens as they rustle through the golden leaves spread beneath the gingko.

Nearby, spiders have slung silken loops along the thin stems of the forsythia and captured droplets of dew, that glisten like glowing lanterns amongst this fragile web-work.

The garden has passed the winter solstice and morning’s light reveals a fragility of rosemary blossoms and bees’ wings glinting in transit. The ancient Greeks believed that rosemary would improve memory, but for me rosemary holds a more precious place as the symbol of friendship. It is an enjoyable distraction to inhale the pine-fresh fragrance of rosemary while I appreciate the blue sky’s clarity and the crispness of the still morning air.

Beside the fence an exuberance of massed borage sprawls, perpetrated by resting birds, no doubt! Herbalists have long praised the ability of borage to encourage a sense of cheerfulness and wellbeing. Ancient Celts rumoured, that imbibing wine, flavoured with borage, before entering battle, was sure to inspire courage. I require little encouragement to release a star-shaped blossom from amongst the hairy leaves before savouring the borage’s surprising, cool, cucumber flavour.

Nearby, a commotion of splashing draws my attention to the downpipe beneath the kitchen window, where an old copper pot stands half-full of water. Regardless of my nearness, a Little Wattlebird is energetically bathing, his streaked, grey-brown feathers puffed with air and water. This elegant little bird often delights in swerving closely through foliage at top speed, while uttering harsh calls and clattering his bill to chase other birds away. His disregard for my nearness today, is typical I fear… I am merely another random part of the garden!

The Sydney Hills regional committee would be pleased to have some volunteers to assist with public image and Public relations in the Hills area.

The subcommittee will be responsible for: a) i nform our volunteers, supporters, sponsors, athletes and coaching staff of news, events and achievements. b) p romote Sydney Hills Region of Special Olympics to schools, sporting clubs, council, Rotary, potential volunteers and sponsors. c) Give appropriate recognition to those who give support. d) Develop promotional materials such as banners. e) L iaise directly with major sponsors, councils and politicians as required. f) E nsure coverage of events, news and achievements in the local press.

Marilyn will present the research she undertook for her Masters Degree in Modern History at Macquarie University on the 1835-37 Aborigines Select Committee on Aborigines (British Settlements) and the research that she is now doing for her PhD. Marilyn’s current research follows on from her Masters by examining the situation of Aboriginal people in the Australian colonies during the first half of the nineteenth century. The particular focus will be dominant debates about Aboriginal policy during the 1830s.

Cancer the Dragon and You Winter is a time for reflection as much of nature becomes dormant before bursting into life again in Spring. It is also a time to reflect upon a better understanding of “Cancer” as a way of seeking better treatments for now and in the future.

By definition a “Cancerous Cell” is one which grows in an uncontrolled fashion. Any of the body’s cells can become cancerous due to DNA damage and form Mutations of the original cell.

There may be many Mutations types in a single cancer tumor as they tend to be genetically unstable. For this reason a single cancer treatment may only be effective for some Mutations but not all. Common treatments might only offer short term remission and tumor shrinkage, while those Mutations resistant to the treatment continue to develop and grow in the longer term.

Being in “In remission” or declared “Cancer Free” is not a time to be complacent. The common declaration of being “Cancer Free” means that no cancer masses can be found with the current medical scan methods. For typical scans that means that no cancer masses above 2 to 5 millimeters in diameter are found.

Smaller undetected cancer nodules present may still contain in excess of a million cancer cells.

A prudent approach is to remain vigilant with regular checks and minimise any cancer growth by adoption of a personalised complementary therapy plan.

I am thrilled to announce that after much lobbying, the F3 M2 missing link in Sydney’s Motorway Orbital network has been approved for the next stage of detailed planning and development.

Transurban, the Westlink M7 shareholders and the NSW Government, will work together to produce the design and construction price for construction of the F3-M2 project. This stage will also include planning approval and community and stakeholder consultation for the F3-M2 link to ensure the project delivers the best possible outcomes for residents and businesses in the corridor and the users of the proposed tunnel.

The proposed 8 kilometre tunnel link connecting the F3 at Wahroonga and Hills M2 will relieve traffic congestion on Pennant Hills Road, improve road safety and enhance the liveability of one of the busiest traffic corridors in Sydney An extensive program of engagement will be developed that will provide residents, local businesses, transport and other stakeholders with a chance to comment on key features of the proposal.

Pennant Hills Road is among Sydney’s most congested corridors, particularly for heavy vehicles, with more than 10,000 trucks using the road each day. The road has a poor safety record and is consistently mentioned in the lists of accident hot spots in Sydney.

The new link will deliver quicker travel times for commuters travelling between the central coast/upper north shore and Sydney’s north-west. Freight and heavy vehicles will also benefit from greater reliability.

Local residents will benefit from reduced noise and congestion on local roads and better road safety. I am proud to be able to deliver on another election commitment for the benefit of our community

Galston CWA News At our June meeting, we enjoyed a ‘plant swap’. Thanks to those who bought succulents, herbs, cacti and salvias to swap. Members also crocheted and knitted toys, and had fun embroidering faces on dolls and teddies for children.

At our July meeting we will be working on activities for our International Day in August. The country of study for 2013 is Morocco, so we plan to make placemats and test some recipes.

These no doubt will include mint tea, couscous, cinnamon, cumin and turmeric.

Lunch will be followed by our business meeting. Visitors are very welcome to attend.

Hornsby Police News Incident: Fail to stop car crash Time/Date: About 10am on Monday the 10th June Place: Arcadia road, Arcadia (near Vision Valley road).

Vehicle 1: Diahatsu Driver 1: Not known.

Details: It appears the Daihatsu was being driven on Arcadia road and has failed to negotiate a right hand bend in the road.

The Daihatsu has careered off the road into a garden bed then into a tree. It had extensive damage to the front of the car. The driver appears to have removed the number plates and left the scene. Later that night a neighbour reported the car ‘in the bush’ to police. Inquiries led police to a nearby property where the said number plates were allegedly found. The owner or driver have not yet been spoken to and inquiries are continuing.

Incident: Car crash Time/Date: About 7.30am on Friday the 7th June Place: Galston Gorge.

Vehicle 1: Corolla Driver 1: 17 year old male P1.

Details: The Corolla was being driven towards Hornsby in the Galston Gorge. When near the Tunks bridge the Corolla has failed to negotiate a left hand bend and collided with a rock wall. The driver was not hurt. He was issued a ticket for negligent driving.

Incident: Disqualified driver Time/Date: About 4.35am on Sunday the 26th May Place: Carters road, Dural.

Vehicle 1: Holden Rodeo.

Driver 1: 17 year old (disqualified driver).

Details: Police were patrolling the area and have stopped the car and driver for a random breath test. While speaking to the driver a strong smell of cannabis was allegedly coming from the inside of the car. The driver was spoken to and certain admissions were made in relation to his license being disqualified by Hornsby Local Court. The car was searched with 3 knives and a small amount of cannabis allegedly being located in the car.

Court: The driver is to face Hornsby Local Court at a date yet to be set for driving whilst his license was disqualified.

Incident: Attempted Break and Enter Time/Date: Between Friday (24th) evening /Monday (26th) May morning.

Place: Glenorie Public school.

Details: CCTV footage from within the school shows a number of youths enter the school grounds, one of the youths has then thrown a paving brick through a window. The roller door to the canteen was also smashed but entry was not gained to any rooms. Inquiries are continuing.

Sparks Caused Potential Catastrophe In Knights Rd.

By Ross Grieve As a young man I worked for Vic Jarrett who had a a workshop building tractor equipment and repairing implements in Knights Road, Galston. In those days the electricity supply was administered by Hornsby Shire Council along with their usual work of looking after roads, The building that was Vic Jarret’s Workshop in 1953/54 gutters etc.

The incident I am about to relate happened right outside Vic’s workshop in about 1953/54.

The Council workers were widening the road and decided to remove a tall ironbark tree growing on the edge of the gutter. The men hung a rope high in the tree to guide it as it was sawn through. But the tree had a mind of its own and fell across the road snapping the top wires which were high tension lines which supplied the local transformers. These lines carried 11,000 volts. They fell onto the 240 volt line underneath that supplied the local households This started a chain reaction. The first house power board to explode was in Radnor Road, then Harrry Williemson’s duck farm in Chadd St. Then it started to work its way up Knight’s Road.

Jarrett’s at number 44 had a over bath water heater which exploded setting the shower curtain over the bath alight and dropped ashes into the bath. The house did not catch alight. Next in line was Vic’s workshop.

I had witnessed the whole episode. From the front of the workshop I saw the tree fall, and the almighty flash as the high power lined fell on the primary lines, and heard the explosions as they gradually approached. I saw the lines coming into the shed were smoking, and then our powerboard exploded with a great roar. In those days the conduit covering the internal power lines was steel and was earthed. I peeked in the door to see the conduit was red hot and getting hotter until at last it melted and widened a gap which the current leaped between. It sounded like a machine gun. It is a sight I will never forget.

Meanwhile, Vic, in desperation to save his workshop, had grabbed a long piece of dry wood which was laying out the front and with my help, threw it over the incoming power lines. This finally broke the red hot lines and they parted from the shed. Immediately we heard an explosion over at Flintoff’s house. Vic and I ran over.

Nobody was at home. The power board had blown apart and the house smouldered where the lines entered under the eaves At last the crew over at Hornsby Power Station realised something was terribly wrong over at Galston and threw the manual circuit breakers. The subsequent inquiry found that the automatic circuit breakers which should work immediately were wrongly wired and would never have worked.

Well, I think they were suffering from shock and didn’t know what to do. We had a look at the stump and you could see the reason it had snapped the way it did.

Termites had riddled the original stump and when the tree was partly sawn through it snapped and fell sideways. It took about a week to get the power back on, and a bit longer for some of our neighbours.

We were told Council was insured and nobody had to pay for repairs. About a year later it was revealed that the total cost was about sixty thousand pounds, a lot of money in the 1950’s.

The amazing thing was that no person was harmed.

Glenorie Pony Club Gingers Soames and Brooklyn Symes spend 2 days at the Steve Brady training clinic at Cobbitty.

They had a great time with their horses Cougar and ‘Georgie learning how to train their horses even showing up some of the adults riders. They particularly enjoy the’ Steve Brady Clinics” as Steve is all about developing a great partnership with your horse using his techniques on the ground and under saddle. Ginger and Brooklyn Ginger Soames on “Georgie” and Brooklyn Symes on “Cougar” both absolutely love the training side of horses and they can’t wait to use what they have learnt and apply it at pony club.

At the beginning of June 3 of our riders went to one of the largest interschool competitions with 700 competitors from high schools in NSW. The competition was over 5 days and the riders got to experience all aspects of horse events from Hacking, show jumping, Eventing, Time trails, Polocrosse, team penning to name a few. This is a really great opportunity to watch Emily Conn on Morefair Paige and compete with lots of other kids and give some new things a go. They all ended up learning how to use a stick whip and several came home with a new stock whip. Our riders came home with a few ribbons which was a great achievement considering that some classes had 70 riders competing. Well Done to Sarah, Rachel & Isabella Last weekend Glenorie PC was represented by 4 riders (Sarah, Rachel, Emily & Olly) at the Forest Hills Pony Club Junior Committee day which was a fun day with a mix of hacking, sporting and jumping. All our riders did well coming away with a swag of ribbons! Special congratulations to Sarah Pernice who was Champion 13 & 14years and her sister Rachael Pernice did well to win 2 firsts in the hack ring. Emily Conn who was Reserve Champion 11 & 12 years also won the E Grade Derby with her brother Olly Conn winning several seconds in the sporting. The kids had a great day at Forest Hills and the Day was run with great enthusiasm and efficiency – good job Junior Committee!

One of our younger riders had a great result at The Arab Society Dressage Day which is held a couple of times a year at the Vines Pony Club Grounds. Emily Conn was awarded Champion in the Prelim Dressage. This is a tremendous achievement as it is an open competition and Emily was riding against adults as well as other children in both her Prelim Tests. Well done Emily.

Hills Grammar School The Inside Story Hills Grammar Year 8 English Honours class was lucky enough to have acclaimed crime writer, Kathryn Fox, conduct a creative writing workshop recently. Author of six thrillers, a former physician with an interest in forensic medicine, Ms Fox also holds the distinction of toppling the Da Vinci Code from number one in the UK and Germany with her debut novel Malicious Intent. She discussed her “Ten Commandments of Writing”, ways to make the reader care about the characters and the importance of plotline. Head of English, Dr Susan Green commented on the value of the workshop, “We aim to open students’ minds to critical and creative thinking and Ms Fox’s workshop encouraged the students to develop their ideas. They also learned the need for independent research for historical fiction.”

The Scottish warriors were instructed on sword fighting by the Sydney Stage Combat School who also worked with the Jedi Knights in Star Wars episodes 1-3. Rehearsals began in November 2012 and continued until the play opened in June 2013 when it was time for our witches to come out of Hills Grammar presents the trees and cast their horrible spell on Macbeth.

Macbeth in the Blue Box Theatre Cast and crew were delighted with the three sold out shows and two Q&A matinees for students who studied the play. The Hills community were treated to some of our finest performances from Years 10-12 as they told Shakespeare’s tale of bloody, unbridled ambition.

Glenorie Public School At the Multicultural Speaking Competition held at Cherrybrook Public School, Jessica, Shawn, Elizabeth and Jade did an outstanding job presenting their speeches to a large audience, what excellent public speakers of the future they will be.

Congratulations to both Benjamin Black and Jye McLachlan who represented Beecroft Zone PSSA at the Regional Cross Country held at Gosford Racecourse. Jye came 35th in the 8/9 year old boy’s race. Benjamin came 3rd in the 10 year old boy’s race and will now be going on to State Cross Country. Well done boys! We are very proud of you.

On Saturday 15th of June, students from Year 3 and 4 at Glenorie Public School held a BBQ at Glenorie Woolworths. This event was part of the unit the students have been learning about this term called ‘Cooperating Communities’. In this unit, students explored the various services provided to the community of Glenorie.

Students raised $738.70 from the BBQ and will use this money to purchase a gift for the community. Students and teachers of 2/3H, 3/4D and 3/4K would like to thank those who helped and supported us in running of the BBQ. On Tuesday, 18th June, we held a fund raising day for the fathers that are walking the Kokoda Trail to take over and donate to the schools along the track. We have supported these schools in the past by donating our old library books. The SRC planned a very exciting day on Tuesday – pyjama day. The weather was freezing and the hot chocolate was very welcoming and the students thought that it was a fantastic day. Thanks to the gold coin donation and the sales from the hot chocolate, $489 has been raised for the Kokoda Track Foundation - an organisation which supports disadvantaged PNG communities along the Track. Glenorie Pre-School Update on our Missing Flamingoes!

August is nearly upon us which for Glenorie residents this year means its Flamingo season! Glenorie Preschool is still having problems with our wandering flamingoes! Come term three we are afraid that we will be having to ask the local Glenorie community for some help with their capture and return. Please keep a look out for further information.

A Family Fun Day Had By All On the Sunday 26th May, Glenorie Preschool hosted a wonderful Family Fun Day for all the families in the community.

There was lots of laughter, eating, painting, jumping and fun, as the children and parents enjoyed the beautiful sunshine.

The ‘decorate your own cupcake stall’ and plaster painting fun produced some beautiful masterpieces, and allowed the children to get creative. The face painting and jumping castle was a big hit with the children, while the sensational sausage sizzle proved a big hit for the whole family. A big thanks to Trevor Conn from Glenorie Butchery for donating the sausages! The preschool was also very lucky to have some cute and cuddly baby animals come to visit from Golden Ridge Animal Farm. RALLY Youth Program - Mental Health Forum Welcome back Oakhill College to the Dural Rotary Mental Health Forum series in 2013! We are thrilled to again have Oakhill College join us in this important community school program with 370 students attending. Oakhill College was part of the inaugural Mental Health forums back in 2005 and with the support of Anne Brown, College Counsellor, they have rejoined us this year.

The Hills Clinic again supplied expert psychologists covering the most common areas of mental health including Depression, Stress, Anxiety, Healthy Lifestyle, Cyber Bullying, Drinking & Substance abuse. Staff Appreciation Week From the 3rd to the 7th of June, Glenorie preschool families hosted a staff appreciation week for our lovely teachers, Rachel, Rom, Sue, Jess and Margo. Each day parents generously volunteered their time to help out in the classroom, wash the teachers’ cars, provide yummy morning teas, tasty lunches and delicious dinners. The children enagaged in activities during the week to show their teachers how much they appreciate them, as well as creating a wall of messages about why they like their teachers.

The teachers also enjoyed pamper sessions of hair appointments, facials and shoulder massages during the week. A big thank you to Laura Jane Hairdressing, Alona Loria from Soothing Touch Holistic Massage and Oscars Glenorie Takeaway (for their yummy coffees each morning), for donating their time and services. Glenorie Preschool is very much a family, and each teacher is treasured. Thank you to all of them.

Artists abound at Arcadia Public School. A recent visit to the NSW Art Gallery by our primary students was an exciting event, one which ignited their imaginations and creativity. The excursion to view the Archibald Prize entries beautifully complimented the children’s study and interpretation of artists and their works, guiding and inspiring their own portraiture creations.

Performing arts has been the order of the day, with Kindergarten, Year One and Year Two enjoying a trip to the theatre. A puppetry portrayal of the Mem Fox classic Possum Magic provided a magical experience, one that has since been written, sung, danced and dramatized in the classroom!

Congratulations to Aimee in Year 5 who represented Arcadia Public School at the Regional Cross Country Carnival on the 13th of June. Aimee ran 16th in a field of over 100 competitors. A great achievement for a talented sportsperson.

Walk to school day is a regular feature of the Arcadian calendar each June. The children converged on the school, riding their horses, walking (or being pulled along) with their dogs or simply enjoying the walk with mum and dad while road safety rules were being reinforced. We were fortunate enough to have two pipers accompany us on the walk this year. Mr Chrystal and his son Scott, music adds an incredible ‘presence’ to the occasion.

News from KU Galston Preschool What a busy term here at KU Galston Preschool. We were lucky enough to be visited by Matthew Doyle who presented a Young Australian Workshop titled Wuruniri. The children experienced an introduction to Aboriginal culture through dance, stories and the didgeridoo. As a result of this workshop the children have been experimenting with Aboriginal art doing dot paintings and colour mixing and have been enjoying listening to stories of the dreamtime.

We also had a visit from Paramedic Steve who bought his ambulance to visit us. Paramedic Steve told us about his role helping people as a paramedic and showed us all of the equipment that he uses to do his job safely and we participated in role plays as to when to call an ambulance in an emergency and how. The children had a wonderful time looking through the ambulance and sitting up on the special bed. We were amazed to hear how loud the siren was, thanks Paramedic Steve!

It was lovely to see so many Grandparents and VIP’s visiting our preschool last month. They all had a wonderful morning playing with the children and thoroughly enjoyed watching them dance and sing as they performed a concert for them. We all then enjoyed a delicious teacake that the children had made for morning tea.

by Carole Weiss Galston Public School students are currently enjoying a well deserved Term 2 break. Prior to this term vacation many engaging, busy, stimulating and enjoyable events occurred.

The SRC organised a very successful fundraising event. They sold Bandaged Bear merchandise in order to raise money for the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

Two sporting teams of students showed great determination to do their personal best in the recently held PSSA State Knockout Netball and Rugby League Competitions. The girls netball team have played two fantastic games so far and are undefeated, while the boys rugby league team narrowly lost the grand final.

Considering that only two players currently play rugby league and the other members of the team were attempting rugby league for the first time, this result was amazing.

Congratulations to 1/2C drama group who recently auditioned for entry into the ArtsNorth Drama Festival. If selected this drama group will perform at The Parade Theatre, NIDA. Everyone involved is keeping their fingers and toes crossed. This drama group is so fortunate to have been prepared by their very talented teacher, Miss Alisha Clements.

Well done to our fine Zone Cross Country representatives who were courageous competitors at the recently held Beecroft Zone Cross Country. Two Galston Public School students, Hamza Sweeden and Jessica Smillie, will go on to compete in the upcoming area carnival. They are sure to be fine sporting ambassadors for their school.

By Kate Welshman Cosmetic procedures at school Don’t expect to see Mrs Mills with a frozen forehead or Mrs McLennan with fish lips, but do expect to see some new mature parkland trees in our school grounds the next time you drive past. Last month our lovely grounds went under the knife, thanks to the generosity of Morrie Maait and his company, Alpine Treemovals.

Morrie donated and planted a total of nine huge trees, using some serious excavation equipment. Just when we thought our gardens couldn’t get any more beautiful…

Footsteps dance program Students across the grades have been participating in the Footsteps dance program this term, under the capable instruction of Chantal. It’s now an ongoing part of the school’s curriculum and another great opportunity for cross-age interaction.

Kitchen garden program Our illustrious P & C Association President Alecia McGill has been doubling as a food technology teacher again this term. Recently she taught our student chefs to make pumpkin scones, which went down a treat at recess.

Thank you Alecia for making learning so fun (and yum!).

Zone cross-country Middle Dural’s finest young athletes competed at zone cross-country last month. The event was held at Fagan Park on a very nippy day, but once competitors were running they didn’t seem to notice. I saw Jesse, Sarah, Summer, Kirralee, Madeleine and Richard compete. All our runners performed well, with Kirralee and Madeleine well up in their pack. Well done! From my position on a fold-up chair under a blanket, the course looked very steep and tough.

Every year, Hillside Public School supports an important charity called ‘Wrap with Love’. Wrap with Love began in 1992 and their motto is ‘Cold humanity is our concern, people caring about other people.’ Their aim is to help as many people as possible by providing warm Wraps to ward off hypothermia.

The Hillside knitters join together every Wednesday morning in Mrs Fraser’s room to knit squares. Even beginners are welcome, as Mrs Fraser and Mrs Hoogesteger are happy to teach people how to knit. Some parents and grandparents join us every Wednesday as well, and that makes it so much easier because we all know that the grandparents are great knitters.

All of the squares are sewn together to make blankets for people less fortunate than us. We really feel like we can contribute in making an effort to help other people. We would like to thank everyone that helps us and we have already finished one whole blanket, with more to come.

Galston High School Visits Parliament House Galston High School captains attended a leadership day at Parliament House a few weeks ago where they had the honour to meet the Governor of NSW, Maree Bashir.

Harrison and Stella spent time talking to the Governor about a variety of topics, including their work on the leadership team at Galston. They also met several members of Parliament who discussed their leadership roles in the wider community.

This valuable information will be brought back to Galston and shared amongst the prefect body to enhance their ability to lead Galston High School into the future.

It is also worth noting that some students from Galston High School were involved in the Red Shield Appeal held a short time ago. These students raised $1000 and are highly commended for their efforts.

News from St Benedicts Construction has begun on the long-planned disabled access to the Parish Centre. Building activity has made moving around the church a little difficult (especially during wet weather) but the end result will definitely be worth the short term inconvenience.

Man is very good at justifying his position. He frequently devises clever arguments to support his views. It’s easy to take a standpoint on almost anything and everything. Multitudes of seemingly rational people have been led into great folly by the influence of misguided leaders. Why? was the reality not obvious for all to see?

Why do we so readily listen to and follow falsehood? Is it that we listen to what we really want to hear, the easier option, or the most comfortable fit?

Truth seems to be of secondary importance to those who do not want to hear.

Arguments about the origin of man, the creation of the world and the existence of God have occupied man for centuries. Clever, convincing arguments go round and round.

We need to recognize our position and be silent. The next meeting of the Cumberland Orchid Circle will be on Wednesday 24th July 2013 in Community of Christ Neighbourhood Centre at 10-14 Taylor Street, West Pennant Hills. The meeting will start at 8.00pm and will last approx 2.0 hrs. This month’s meeting is a Cultural Night and members who are having problems with any plant or have a question about anything associated with orchids are encouraged to bring it up at the meeting, where other members can offer advice about the problem. If you are bringing along a plant for advice, please let an experienced member see the plant before you bring it into the hall as we do not want a diseased plant in the hall which is liable to infect other plants in the hall.

At each meeting there is a sales table selling plants brought along by members, in addition to accessories used for orchid culture. During our supper interval, there will be time to “compare notes” and seek advice from other members.

Winter Orchid Show at Home Hub Hills – Castle Hill From Thursday 11th July till Sunday 14th July, during shopping hours, Home Hub Hills, in the North Tower at the top end of Showground Rd, Castle Hill, will host a Winter Orchid Show by Cumberland Orchid Circle. On show will be many of the orchids in flower at this time of the year and there will be members of the Circle present at all times to discuss orchids and their culture as well as advise on any cultural problems that members of the public may have. The Circle will also maintain a sales table where orchids, many in bloom, may be purchased for very little cost and also conduct repotting demonstrations. Free cultural information leaflets will be available covering the cultivation of many specific orchid genera. There will also be a raffle where orchid plants can be won, the proceeds of this raffle being donated to the Westmead Hospital Medical Research Foundation.
