The Journey The year was 2011, a young Medical Ofcer looking to be part of the doctor fraternity then namely KMA, KMA SACCO and KMA Housing walked into the KMA building in upper Hill with dreams that all young doctors have namely: Establishing connections for growth as a person and as a professional; Networking; Mentorship and nally Investment opportunities with some nancial literacy privileges.

That young doctor was me daring to dream and reach out to a doctor family that could take me up and nurture me.

Because of that desire I courageously paid up to be a member of KMA, KMA SACCO and KMA Housing without thinking twice and that day was to begin my journey for growth and success within the connes of an organized doctors’ group. I was immediately taken under the wings of KMA Nairobi division where I was nurtured to understand the structure, role and processes within KMA. I had many questions as many young doctors here have which always leads to the question why KMA? or what does KMA do for individual doctors or the fraternity as a whole?

Not to digress someone may ask if I got the answers I was looking for, but let me start by highlighting a few things.

As doctors we all have various unmet needs professionally and individually. KMA set out its mission endeavouring to champion for the welfare of doctors and be the voice for provision of the highest standards of healthcare in Kenya and beyond.

This responsibility has always given us a chance to be brave, take a stand and make decisions that may be good to us but sometimes hard to swallow. KMA has capacity for growth through bettering member welfare outcomes by the leadership truly engaging the stakeholders and approaching members across generations with humility and openness.

So back to my story, as a KMA member then I realized no individual leader is capable of answering my questions fully – 100% as a doctor unless I personally weigh into the solutions.

“Be on the table not on the menu”. This drove me to engage actively in KMA business, I created time to be involved in activities that brought solutions to member issues at the division level and this eventually led to me being elected as KMA Nanyuki division chairperson where I worked tireless interacting and engaging with stakeholders even in the most difcult period where doctors were irregularly dismissed by the County Government of Laikipia.

The Doctors in Nanyuki gave me a push to enter into leadership at the National platform as KMA Assistant Secretary General in 2020 having seen my capabilities, courage and the tenacity at moving and pushing for the agenda of my colleagues at a personal and professional level. I believe I have a strong will and the right attitude for continued sustained change and growth.

“If there is a problem, we are goingto x it together”.

Leadership is a ‘state of mind’ that is cultivated with experience and a clear vision.

Cntd.......The Journey In the recent past we have witnessed realities of the changing healthcare in 'Kenya and threats to the very foundation that we stand on – Government regulations; Impact of Devolution of the Human Resource for Health on Doctors; Our role in NHIF and UHC; Doctors access to training; Rising costs of training; Task shifting; Private practice challenges; Business permits; Costs on licensing and Board good conduct certicates for doctors etc.

The list may be endless but where or how does KMA work impact the members?

What are our obligations? Which are the sustainable solutions?

Where is our sphere of inuence and how do we build mission and purpose into it, so that we can communicate to inspire through our achievements/stories we share with generations to come and the world at large.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS AS THE KMA ASSISTANT SECRETARY GENERAL 2020-2022 I have been a responsive responsible leader who has always demanded for responsible corporate action from my teammates and the staff/secretariat at KMA. Maintained personal integrity by adhering to a strong set of principles and being true to self and others.

As a member of the Covid-19 team advocated for quality PPEs, Covid trainings, access to vaccines and psychosocial support for healthcare workers during the Covid-19 unprecedented period.

An advocate for doctors in government forums where KMA is represented as partners with a unique opportunity to be involved and made important strides where I have often been in a unique position of insight, and provided important and useful perspectives which are valuable in our medical practice.

I was the focal person in the review of the KMA strategic plan 2016-2021 leading to the structuring and development of the KMA strategic plan 2022-2026.

Participated in the development and bringing to life the KMA Professional Code of Conduct 2021 that informs members & partners of norms, responsibilities and proper practices.

Lobbied and brought together the leaders of the various specialist associations to work together with KMA and weigh in on matters of interest that affect the doctors’ fraternity.

Following up on communication and correspondence to the ofce of the Secretary General where I worked tirelessly in collaboration with the Secretary General to ensure members issues are addressed e.g., single business permits, division correspondence, membership registration etc.

Alignment, empowerment and motivation of the Human Resource at KMA with clear lines of communication open to employees to feel free to share ideas in a supportive environment, salary reviews and review of contracts to clearly dene their tasks and function.

Actively involved in World Medical Association (WMA) activities as a KMA representative and now technically trained and prepared by WMA secretariat on the requirements to effectively host the WMA council session on 20th to 22nd April 2023 in Nairobi.

My active involvement in spearheading and lobbying for the doctors through KMA resulted to my appointment to the Pharmacy and Poisons board and the Kenya Consumer Protection Advisory Committee where I will continue to advance the agenda of KMA.

I ask for your vote to the office of KMA Secretary General as I intend to: Spearhead a Visionaries Programme which will come in as a KMA committee to help scale innovation and sustainable solutions to our current critical challenges affecting the doctor and how we practice our medicine. Such solutions will include: Lobbying and advocating for expansion of the collegiate system that will have major hospital in the counties being empowered and accredited for postgraduate training – solves the increasing costs of the university trainings as collegiate system is cheaper. Also solves the constant ghts between counties and doctors for release to school and brings specialized services closer to the people.

Develop our policies to be used to advise the government policies and our practices.

Lobby for KMA legitimacy to self-regulate.

Partner strategically with the government and other stakeholders to buy-in the KMA solutions presented to solve the healthcare challenges.

Invest in media services i.e., Radio or/and Tv station for Doctors by Doctors to communicate relevant matters affecting them, educate the public, advertise etc. I believe we have untapped talent amongst doctors that we can harness.

Provide an environment that allows members to own the association and be fully part of its growth by actively supporting divisions to achieve their strategic plans which includes well procured membership drives. This requires us to be intentional and embrace inclusivity.

Mentor young Doctors into leadership positions early enough to develop skills and qualities of true leaders and allow for continuity and succession.

Ensure KMA presence in the global environment by actively being involved in international health events e.g., WMA Develop a communication policy and review the other policies in place.

Support and empower the KMA employees through job specic trainings.
