Urban Land Institute Hines Competition 2021 / vi’tral / : a stained glass window; to tell a story through stained glass Reflective of a stained-glass window, the people and energy flowing through VITRAL mirror the unity and uniqueness of its architectural parti and masterplan. Located in the heart of Kansa City, VITRAL merges segregated cultures and channels them into a dynamic and diverse community built upon combined strengths of prosperity, happiness, dignity, creativity, and innovation.

This urban development transforms an underutilized eight block area into a cluster of public and private spaces which unite the East (Paseo) with the West (Financial District) in a composition of culture, economy, and ecology.

Focused on bridging the deep socioeconomic and racial divide, VITRAL provides space for collaboration, exchange, and experience. This multi-use, mixed-income, and transit-oriented development serves as a national case study allowing equitable and sustainable development built upon pillars of vitality, connectivity, and resilience.

The neighborhood of Camp Washington was the industrial lifeblood of Cincinnati in its heyday. The construction of the i-75 highway in the mid-20th century severed the once-thriving business district, isolated the neighborhood, and morphed it into what is now perceived as a highway by its 30,000 daily commuters. While they increased the accessibility of Camp Washington from a vehicular perspective, this development was the single most devastating event on the connective tissue within the neighborhood. The wide, flat roads contribute to high speeds, dozens of traffic incidents annually, and create a hazardous environment for pedestrians.

Because 42% of Camp Washington residents do not own personal vehicles, the Camp Junction was conceptualized to prioritize the pedestrian. It introduces a series of intiatives that provide pedestrians with safer travel options, incites driver safety, promotes environmental stewardship, and creates a vibrant new gateway into the neighborhood.

The Camp Junction was conceptualized around a framework of systems thinking and geodesign. It is clear that the developers of the highway systems had not predicted the impact of their work on the neighborhood. By studying prototypes, conducting multiscale site analyses, and performing scenario-based predictions, we determined the what the potential impacts might be in 2030 and 2050 if the design is adopted earlier, later, and not at all.

Hardscape throughout the design is comprised of recycled pavers and granite from Camp’s local stone yard. Rain gardens collect stormwater and a multilayer filter separates pollutants from stormwater runoff and returns it to groundwater.

IDENTIFYING ISSUES & OPPORTUNITIES Camp Washington residents own fewer vehicles than the city average. The central business district is centralized in a heavily trafficked 7-lane intersection where safe pedestrian crossings are few and far between. Wide lanes and swooping corners favor vehicular travel and incite high-speed turns.

GIS information was collected and projected onto the topographical model of Camp Washington to visualize the root causes of problematic conditions within the region, such as difficult traffic intersections, flooding, and urban heat island effect.

DESIGN SCENARIOS

Geodesign requires the designer to consider all aspects of a site while crafting the concept. Conventional methods of soil analysis allowed us to identify the soil type across Camp Washington as largely urban. By studying the properties of soil, we were better informed in devising comprehensive rain garden designs.

Following concept development, we assume potential scenarios of Camp Washington’s development in the years 2030 and 2050 if the proposals are adopted earlier, later, or not at all.

*Design scenarios were discussed among all MLA students in class; these scenarios consider if each student’s design were implemented simultaneously.

Improvements in the local environment are slow but steady. Light recreational use of the Mill Creek has begun. Green infrastructure is gaining popularity. Flooding has decreased slightly. Pedestrian infrastructure is in development and the intersection has seen a decrease of crashes to 20 per year.

Camp has experienced so much flooding and erosion that the physical environment and infrastructure have degraded and wasted away. The railyard is partially submerged by rising creek levels. The Mill Creek has been named “America’s most polluted river - again”

by ARA. Hopple x Colerain is designated the most dangerous intersection in Cincinnati and the residential population is at an all time low.

1. Eight sites in Camp Washington were selected for soil sampling among the total identified soil types (color-coded).

2. Soil samples were collected from each site, mixed with water, and allowed to settle for 24 hours. Following analysis, we identified the soils’ properties and drew inspirations from natural membranes such as plant cells to inform design.

FUNGALREALMS LA+CREATURE Competition 2020

Fungal Realms is an experience of observation and empathy towards an unseen client. Fungi are underrepresented clients of landscape architecture and the backbone of every healthy ecosystem.

The ecologically-minded landscape architect must build upon existing ecologies to enhance habitat for these creatures, consequently resulting in healthier forests, riparian areas, and urban spaces.

Many of the most common urban pollutants are expensive and recalcitrant towards removal.

Studies have shown that fungi colonized in urban environments have restorative potential for contaminated sites. Specimens such as oyster mushrooms, shiitake, and garden giants are standout candidates for remediating sites contaminated by heavy metals, removing oil and diesel from saturated soils, and eliminating e. coli from surface water.

Frequent CSO events, industrial waste, and brownfields are ubiquitous throughout the Mill Creek wastershed of Cincinnati, Ohio. These conditions provide unexpectedly fertile breeding grounds for fungi, turning an unfortunate situation into a unique opportunity to experiment and learn.

SITE CONTEXT The impermeable infrastructure and current soil conditions in the Mill Creek watershed are ill-equipped for managing rainfall. Heavier and more frequent flooding events will become more damaging and costly over time. One approach to fixing this complex issue is to remediate the soil and loosen compaction using nonintrusive methods to encourage efficient absorption.

The symbiotic relationships between fungi and other organisms have been instrumental in their evolution and the beginnings of life on Earth. The ingenuity hidden in their clever methods for nutrient acquisition, reproduction, and self defense has benefitted their partners in mutualistic relationships. Many fungi-plant symbiotic relationships determine the viability of the forest to support an ecosystem, including those formed among the turkey tails, oysters, shiitake, and garden giants.

Fungi are needed by ecosystems to decompose waste and return nutrients back to the system; a healthy ecosystem inherently relies on fungal communities. The urban scape is disconnected from the natural environment and the discontinuity of healthy soils disjoints potential habitat. To create a healthier habitat for fungi is to create healthier ecosystems which better coexist with nature, and ultimately create a healthier environment for human communities.

The design proposes an area which is left to nature’s way.

When a tree falls, the dying matter is left. Brush is cut and left on the ground. Woody organic material provides the fundamental nutrients that fungi feed on - these are the first ingredients for rich soil and ecosystem recovery.

Land Art Generator Inspired Studio Project 2020 Located between Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium, Algae island is an immersive renewable energy experience at Northerly Island in Chicago, Illinois. By integrating new technologies with existing structures and systems, Algae Island’s sculptural energy production feature provides visitors with a unique renewable energy learning opportunity.

Algae, a vastly available yet untapped resource, is the energy of the future. Wastewater from Shedd Aquarium is channeled through the Aquatic Highway to the Bungalow, where algae photosynthesize light into sugar. A mix of water and sugars are moved underground into storage cisterns before being finally transported to a refinery and converted into various energy forms.

Visitors to the island are invited to learn about energy and the environment in novel ways through experience and engagement. The Bungalow creates spaces for groups to gather and children to play; the Outlook provides visitors with information and live data of energy being produced on-site. Parking in the garage, where illuminated columns transport algae and water underground, even feels otherworldly.

Water is transported from the Shedd Aquarium and made visible at the street level through the clear polycarbonate network of pipes in the Aquatic Highway. Following photosynthesis, an on-site underground facility collects algae in tanks, where the dark reactions of photosynthesis occurs and raw energy is produced before being sent away to a refinery and converted into biogas, biodiesel, bioethanol, etc.

The Gaslight District is a historic neighborhood just north of the University of Cincinnati. Its small-town German charm and pedestrian-oriented business district has remained lively and intact over its 150-year lifetime.

Clifton Plaza is an open space amid the restaurants and shops where communities gather to share space, exhibit art, and enjoy the locale. The Blooming Fountain is a handsome sculptural landscape element which compliments the plaza with a water feature and generates buzz for locals and visitors alike.

The voronoi pattern from nature is extrapolated into various forms and expressions. In response to the current needs of the district, the feature can assume different forms and functions.

LEVELED

A Contemplative Landscape within University of Cincinnati’s Campus LEVELED is an experience of landscape for the thinker and the overworked college student. While the typical campus route takes you directly from point A to point B, LEVELED creates a space removed from the day-to-day world for you to find peace through a meditative route. The gently sloping tiered walkways foster contemplative movement around the perimeter; within the epicenter lies a reflective pool which offers a space of quietude amid the chatter of campus.

The site is a node within campus where several main pedestrian arteries meet. The challenge to produce a contemplative landscape for a relatively busy site required us to use our understandings of design principles, materiality, and physicality.

The working concept was born out of a need to create contrast. The site is sloped at 8%, so we imagined a space depressed into the landscape and leveled to encourage walking, sitting, and reflection. Like a labyrinth, movement is guided and intentional. However, there are no rigid paths one must take from start to finish.

SELECTED PHOTOGRAPHY Before I chose to study design, I developed an eye for viewing my surroundings through multiple angles and perspectives through the practice of photography.

In the unending quest to satisfy my travel bug, I have been fortunate to capture some of the Earth’s most beautiful landscapes and moments which feel otherworldly. I approach each new drawing and perspective in landscape architecture as I would approach capturing a photograph - by considering the principles of composition, framing, light, and space.
