Message from DHPOA President Bob Marthouse Greetings everyone, To say our personal and professional lives have gone through unprecedented changes is an understatement. Your board has been talking regularly to determine what steps are needed to keep our members and employees safe. I would like to thank our members and employees for their commitment to following the CDC social distancing recommendations. I’m incredibly proud of our staff for the way they have handled these challenges. We wish everyone the best under these circumstances and hope that all our lives can return to normal soon. Please read on to view our current plans for the upcoming election, keeping in mind that it is a fluid situation. The Diamondhead Country Club and Property Owners Association (“POA”), like the rest of the country, is in a unique situation. The COVID-19 virus has forced the company to make decisions and run the business pursuant to laws and bylaws that do not contem-

Currently, the annual meeting, at which the next board member election is to occur, is set for June 20, 2020. Based on current information, it’s uncertain if the executive order will be lifted by the annual meeting. Although we still have a couple of months, the POA must prepare for the meeting now and send out proper notices within the next month. This preparation means that decisions regarding how the meeting will be conducted must be made now. The current POA board is of the opinion that the POA should stick closely to the bylaws and state law requirements and proceed with the meeting and election in a fashion that poses the least risk to the community. To that end, pursuant
to Section 3.1 of the bylaws, the POA will hold the annual meeting of the members on the third Saturday in June, at which time the newly elected officers and directors will be announced. As permitted in Section 3.3 of the bylaws, members of the POA will be able to participate in the meeting electronically in a manner that allows them to read or hear the proceedings as they occur, vote on any matters, pose questions, and make comments. The exact mechanism through which this participation will take place will be communicated in the notice of the meeting to the members. In order to facilitate the election of the new board members, the POA will proceed with the election under Section 3.10 of the bylaws. Under this section, members can act without a meeting if the POA delivers a written ballot to

every member entitled to vote. Member verification forms, ballots, proxies, and pre-paid return envelopes will be delivered to the members at the mailing address registered with the POA. All member verification forms, ballots and proxies must be returned in the OFFICIAL RETURN ENVELOPE by mail directly to the auditor. The auditing firm will then tabulate the election votes and provide the results to the POA board for announcement during the annual meeting. The newly elected board members will take their positions immediately upon the announcement of the elected candidates. We will remind you of these procedures several times in the coming months. Please make sure that the POA has your MOST current mailing address and phone number on record. As we have more information, we will share it will with you. BUSINESS DIAMONDHEAD POA MEMBERSHIP CARDS We understand that some of you may have a concern about sending your State Issued ID via email to verify your identity for the new 2020 Membership Card. If you are concerned about the security of your internet services (communications before they reach the POA), please: Email the following to membership cards@dhpoa.org: 1. Please put your member # in the Subject Line of the Email. 2. Attach a selfie-style picture against a solid wall. (Do this for all members in household who are requesting a new membership card) 3. Please list the name and age of each dependent beside their picture 4. When the POA reopens, you may bring in a copy of a State Issued ID for Property Owners and spouse (or any adult on the deed) to validate your ID. At that time, you will receive your membership card If you are comfortable with the security of your internet services, please follow steps 1-3 above, and send in a copy of a State Issued ID for Property
Owners and spouse (or any adult on the deed) to the POA, and we will prepare, validate, and issue your cards. We will shred your ID as
soon as we validate your identity. Another option is to make a copy of your ID, place it in a sealed envelope with your name and

cock County Animal Control was contacted and they tried to catch him. No luck. The Hancock County Animal Shelter manager called the Harrison County Humane Society and requested assistance. Harrison County would not give any help as they considered Diamondhead out of their jurisdiction and that the adoption was complete. The black-and-white bulldog mix started running around with a tan hound mix who is wearing a very tight collar resembling a “radio” collar. The hound is emaciated and may have been “dumped” and may be sick. The two of them have become best buddies. Residents have installed an igloo for them to keep warm on cold nights and people are feeding them. Even though they seem friendly and not aggressive at all, they won’t let anyone get near them. Since January (Martin Luther King weekend), the SPCA has received many calls concerning two or more dogs roaming the neighborhood in the Diamondhead Drive West neighborhood and near the High Voltage and lake area. We researched the case and learned that the blackand-white dog was adopted from the Harrison County Humane Society just before the weekend holiday. He almost immediately escaped from his new Diamondhead adoptive family. They tried everything to try and catch him. Subsequently, Han-

We would appreciate it so much if people would volunteer to try to catch the dogs so we can rehome the black-and-white dog and get the tan dog medical attention. In the meantime, we wanted you all to know the situation and the fact that we have been monitoring the case. As you can see from the photos, they are sweet dogs. This month the Hancock Animal Shelter is featuring Bixby, a 2-year-old Domestic Shorthair black-andwhite cat. He is quiet and likes gentle pets, attention and his space. DIAMONDHEAD GARDEN CLUB Fortunately, or unfortunately, our April meeting, Flower Show and Pilgrimage were canceled on April 18. Just in time to avoid three situations that would have put people close together. As for the May meeting
scheduled for the 18th we will await developments with COVID-19 and send out an email to the members. We hope your gardens are thriving and bringing pleasure as you gaze out the window. This is a good time to do garden tasks and get outdoors. Plant summer bulbs, Canna,
Caladiums, etc., weed, fertilize and rake debris out of the flower beds. You know you are bored when the dressiest you have been in weeks is a muumuu with flip flops and the highlight of the day is when the mail arrives. Remember: Stay safe, stay healthy, and stay

DIAMONDHEAD WOMEN’S CLUB The May meeting of the Diamondhead Women’s Club has been canceled. We will be continuing to monitor the situation with COVID-19 to determine when it will be safe to resume meetings.
When we are able to meet safely, we will plan a new date for our wonderful Glitz n Tits fundraiser. This fundraiser benefits both The Pink Hearts fund and the Hancock County Food Pantry. Our meetings (we do not meet in June, July, or August), are normally held the first Wednesday of

DH GEAUX HIKING CLUB The DH Geaux Hiking Club is staying active, despite these times “which try men’s souls” (who said that?). But our numbers are growing … yes, there are more and more of you hikers out there on the trails, on the boardwalks, and pacing from bedroom to living room to kitchen and back, and even though you have not become “official” Geaux Hikers, we acknowledge, salute, and welcome all of you! (Even
though we are staying six feet away from you and are not shaking hands or hugging … le sigh ….) Our club has not had any gatherings … no events … no meetings … and, even worse (sob … hand me a hankie): NO COMMUNAL LUNCHES, which is, for us, a sad state of affairs. But we know that even though we are alone with ourselves or our households, we are sharing a common experience with our neighbors and fellow humans around the world. Many of our hikers are
gardeners and have enjoyed these solitary days improving on what will become places of beauty and peace. And some of us just appreciate what “mother nature” placed in our yards (that means wildflowers or, in some cases, uh … weeds ….) Others admit that they are exercising their vacuum cleaners, taking their floor mops dancing, and even … yup … found joy polishing the silver (preparing for that “opening day” tea party?) OK, maybe that last example wasn’t exactly a
“hike,” but maybe just a “stretch of the imagination” or maybe a bit of wishful thinking …. When asked for restaurant (home cooking) reviews, one of our hikers confessed, “My cooking has been limited to soup and grilled cheese sandwiches for the most part. Maybe I’ll lose some weight.” Uh-huh … maybe someone can suggest some good take-out? And finally, some of our hikers have reported enjoying the “GAH” or “Golfer Avoidance Hike,” unique to Diamondhead,
described as follows: “This is where you walk on the course being very aware of where golfers are positioned. When they appear, humming toward you in their golf carts, you blend into a nearby wood or someone’s backyard and pretend to not be hiking on the course. Then when they are out of sight you make your way back onto the path until another cart shows up, when you must once again go into disappearing mode for a short stent while that group tees off before chasing off to their next hole.”
So, while you may hike alone or in family groups, the DH Geaux Hiking Club invites you to “join” our club. There are no fees (except, lunch, wherever it is, is on you). Everyone is welcome; all ages and abilities. You do not have to live in Diamondhead. Join on our Facebook page: DH Geaux Hiking. Having served on the POA Board for six years, I have developed extensive insight into the business of the POA. We have spent the years protecting and improving the amenities for all, streamlining finances and business processes, and forging a path forward to preserve the POA, Our POA is financially sound, and we continue to identify and meet potential challenges that we face. I humbly ask to serve another term to continue the work of keeping the Diamondhead POA thriving and viable. I will continue to answer every call and email, and I am here for you.
As your POA board secretary for the past two years, I have fulfilled my campaign promises and keep our membership informed about POA Board business. We have published all meeting agendas and minutes as quickly as possible. I Karen Rice have been responsive and worked to ensure that you, the members, were represented fairly. Our officer team has enforced the covenants and increased compliance and collections by record numbers. As a former teacher, I realize how important experience is in effective leadership. Please re-elect me to use the experience I have gained in this position to continue creating a vibrant and open POA.

My husband, Thom, and I have been residents since 2010. I have a master’s degree in Nursing, currently teach RN’s online, and am recording secretary for Chapter T, PEO. My leadership experience is as a Vice President of Nursing. I hope to serve property owners by participating in Board decisions, assuring cost-effective management of the amenities in the process. As past Secretary of the POA Nancy Sislow Board (2012-2014 and 2017-2018), I bring knowledge of the Board’s role, leadership and secretarial experience to the Property Owners Association Board of Directors.
My name is John Bunce and I have been a Diamondhead resident for over 20 years. I live with my wife Jan (married 37 years). My working career was spent as a scientist, program director, and resource manager for a large military organization. My education is in public administration/ John Bunce management. Since retirement, I have worked for the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office as an Investigator, deputy, and currently a reserve deputy. My goal for the Diamondhead POA is to provide residents with an efficient and transparent organization that provides resident with an excellent community while maintaining residential property values.
RICHARD SHEPPARD Ricky is a New Orleans native who has made his home in Diamondhead with his wife, Tracy. They chose our community, over others on the Coast, because of the amenities and the covenants that protect them. He is an avid outdoorsman and has enjoyed the opportunity to rediscover his golf game since moving here. As the Director of World Sales for Richard Sheppard Compass Water Solutions, Ricky negotiates agreements with people of different cultures and value systems. His business acumen and strength of character will serve him well in navigating the POA through 2020 and beyond and reuniting a divided Diamondhead.
GERALD GILLEN My name is Jerry Gillen, and it would be an honor to serve as your POA Vice President. My wife Philippa and I have been property owners in Diamondhead for 29 years, living here for 13 years before Hurricane Katrina and subsequently for the past 3 years. I pledge to bring open communication, cooperation, and dedication to the board. My name is Karen Rayner and I am running again for POA Treasurer. In the last election I was pleasantly surprised to have garnered so many votes! Thank you all again! Fast forward to 2020 we are still at the threshold of expiring covenants and I would like to help. Karen Rayner My expertise lies in business management and I truly enjoy numbers and problem solving. I am a proponent of the “fresh eyes” approach to business and believe we need change in leadership to help us navigate to a more prosperous future for all residents. Bridging the gap generationally is a large factor in this task and I humbly ask for your participation and vote for the future of our community.
My becoming the Gardner Realtors Bay St. Louis/Diamondhead Manager in 2013 began our journey to Diamondhead. In 2015, after 7 months of remodeling we moved from our Slidell home of 42 years. Licensed in 1977, protection of the public and property values is part of me. I served as WCR President, STAR President, LRA Director and was elected to the ST Republican Executive Patricia Burgoyne Committee. I retired as Manager in August, going back into real estate sales. My husband “Art”, a retired Civil Engineer, and i own a travel franchise “Dream Vacations”. I pledge my assistance solving the challenges of our POA and its continued success!
I have been a member and property owner for more than 25 years. I’ve seen the problems with the POA and its board. The only way that the POA will survive is with full disclosure of all business dealings, all financials, all costs and all income streams. No longer can a small minority operate the poa as their private serfdom. The POA will survive on volPat McCrossen untary dues. To do that the board and the organization must be responsive to the needs of all the property owners. Diamondhead is a special place because of the people who live here.

Served as the Deputy Director before leaving. Employed by an Engineering firm to assist St Bernard Parish in its recovery. Inter-faced directly with the Parish President and Parish Council. Assisted in interactions with FEMA to secure the funds necessary for the rebuild of the Parish Properties. I formed my own Consulting Group of Engineers and Architects to assist with this project. Retired to Diamondhead as a full-time resident. Currently serving as a ranger on our golf courses.

DIRECTOR TERESA ERTEL Teresa L Ertel, resident of Diamondhead. My husband and I have owned several properties in Diamondhead for over fifteen years. I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Organizational Management from Eastern University. My work experience includes operations Teresa Ertel management and administrative/ project type management. I was President of my previous homeowner’s association and a board member for over fifteen years. I fully understand the workings of POA boards and feel qualified to help facilitate the evolving changes in our community. The POA Board must help lead Diamondhead into the future. I am married and have three grown stepchildren and seven grandchildren.
I am Ronald L. James, I recently retired and moved to Diamondhead in November 2018. I previously lived in Diamondhead from 1987-1992 when I moved to Houston, Texas for continued employment. I worked in the Offshore Oil and Gas industry my entire career around the world (on 6 of the 7 Ronald James continents). I’ve worked from entry level jobs through middle management into VP officer level the last 10 years. We set yearly goals for Safety, Personnel and Financial performance with transparent reviews each quarter.

I attend Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church and recently joined the Knights of Columbus. Lloyd Ramirez Jr. Throughout the years I have been involved with many community activities and projects. I am concerned about the future of the POA and the amenities. I believe through transparency of activities and accountability of finances, the POA can gain the trust of association members in order to save the amenities and uphold property values.

We are looking forward to getting back to normal. Our golf staff have been working tirelessly on keeping you safe and keeping the golf courses open during this health crisis. Many of our golf events that we scheduled to be held in April and May have either canceled or postponed until later this year. When we are able, we hope all of you will consider participating in all of our events for the remainder of the year. Let’s finish this year strong! The golf courses are looking great and we
can’t wait to play some golf on our two championship golf courses. Why play golf or live anywhere else? Diamondhead has it all. Every year, we look forward to hosting The Malahini Member-Guest, one of Diamondhead Country Club’s premier golf and social events. But given the current situation with COVID-19, we’ve made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Malahini. The Malahini is a major event for Diamondhead Country Club, and it’s one of our favorite events of the year. Given the uncertainty we are facing, we don’t believe we will be able to give you sufficient
time to plan, or for your guest to make plans to attend. We explored other ways to host The Malahini, but it’s important to us to host a premier event and nothing less on our traditional dates, the weekend after Mother’s Day. In place of The Malahini, we hope you all will find a way to support our remaining golf events this year such as The Big Kahuna, The Shaka Club Championship, Member-Member, CP Four-Ball, and The Gobbler. Second place was won by John Benus, John Bunce, AJ Dilly and Jerry Jones with a -37 followed by Ernie Knobloch, John Lee, Al Mast and Warren Morgan with -36. On that day Tom O’Connell, Lee Kormondy, Jim Sherrouse and Gene Demedicis each won a Closest to the Pin. As you know, due to the virus restrictions, the DMGA cannot play again until the restrictions on play have been lifted. No specific ending date has been adopted, so we’ll just have to wait and see what develops. Not being able to play on a weekly basis has a negative effect on the DMGA’s ability to help pay for food on scheduled play dates in the future. Stay safe, use social distancing and hope for the best!

The Coronavirus has changed everyone’s lives as we once knew it and golf is no different. The golf course has made a number of new rules we must all go by to stay safe and everyone is doing that. We no longer meet before or after our play day. Everything is set up through email and each group of four are given their tee time and we go

straight to the tee box at our appointed time. We all have our own carts so it is not a problem to stay 10 feet apart. You may see four carts in the same area but there is only one person is each cart. Despite the coronavirus it has been beautiful weather to play golf. Spring is usually a very busy time for the golf course but now all tournaments have been canceled through April. Our different member groups are still allowed to play as long as we follow the rules that the golf course has established. March 5 was our Trophy Day with Net scoring. The winner overall was Colleen Jones with a net score of 70. The first flight winner was Teresa Ertel with a score of 71 and the second place winner was Lottie Williams with a score of 73. The second flight winner was Terri Woolbright with a score of 70 and the second place winner was Kathy Bell with a score of

So where do we begin during this most unusual time in our country’s history? By the time you read
this article we have been in a quarantine (stay at home) situation for several weeks. COVID-19 has hit us hard. By now we are accustomed to staying a minimum of 6 feet apart, washing our hands every five minutes (or it seems like it), and missing our friends and family. However, thus far, we have managed to play some rounds of golf. We have had to adjust several of our planned competitions to accommodate these new normals. With the coming of March our tee start times change back to 9 a.m. as our mornings will be much warmer than in the previous months. Thirty of our players signed up to play at our first Tuesday of the Month, Trophy Day event. This Tuesday we played assigned tee times as opposed to shotgun starts on various holes. And our winners were:
