Este mensaje lo leí en las oficinas de la ONG belga ISLAS DE PAZ con la que DIACONIA trabaja conjuntamente en Umari, departamento de Huánuco. Estas palabras llamaron mi atención antes de vivir la experiencia de cómo DIACONÍA desde 1970 dentro de nuestra congregación y, más tarde, desde 1982 como ONG independiente (Organización No Gubernamental) ofrece su “ayuda para la autoayuda” en las regiones campesinas del interior del país. El presidente de DIACONÍA Rudolf Wüst nos invitó para conocer “Diaconía en vivo y en directo.”El 21 de Octubre se formó un pequeño grupo de 9 personas con rumbo a Huánuco: Rudi y María Wüst con su nieta Martina Schweizer, Roby Funk, Annerose Iturriaga y Gerhard Mack de la Directiva, Eva Schreier, Pastor Christoph Fasse y Gaby Schmidt de la Congregación. Dos días tuvimos la oportunidad para hablar personalmente con los campesinos, darnos cuenta de lo orgullosos que están por todo lo que con su esfuerzo han conseguido, gozar de su hospitalidad y sentir su agradecimiento por la ayuda recibida. Actualmente DIACONÍA está involucrada con sus proyectos en 3 zonas de la sierra: Ancash, Santa Cruz y Huánuco. En los proyectos se trata de poner a la disposición de las personas herramientas y los medios necesarios para que puedan mejorar sus condiciones de vida. Para lograr esto, reciben ayuda material p.ej. en forma de semillas y alambres para el cultivo de granadillas. Reciben también las especificaciones, asesoramiento y acompañamiento necesarios. Interesante me pareció también el proyecto “Fondo Empleo”, que capacita y prepara a jóvenes para que ellos puedan fundar su propio negocio. No reciben dinero pero si ayuda material para que puedan adquirir los materiales que necesitan para poder establecer su negocio propio. Sumamente importante es la labor comunal, la participación de cada uno de ellos para el bien común.

I read this message in the office of the Belgian NGO “Islands of Peace”, an organization with which DIACONIA jointly works in Umari in the Huanuco department. These words captured my attention before experiencing how DIACONIA — since 1970 in our congregation, and later in 1982 as an independent non governmental organization (NGO) —offers its “help for self-help” in the rural regions in the interior of Peru. The DIACONIA president Rudolf Wüst invited us to get to know Diaconia “live and in person”. On October 21st, a small group of 9 people met to travel to Huanuco: Rudi and María Wüst with their granddaughter Martina Schweizer, Roby Funk, Annerose Iturriaga, and Gerhard Mack from the Directorate, Eva Schreier, Pastor Christoph Fasse, and Gaby Schmidt from the Congregation. For two days we had the opportunity to speak personally with the smallscale producers, recognize their pride in what they have achieved through their own efforts, take joy in their hospitality, and feel their gratefulness for the aid received. DIACONIA currently is involved in projects in three areas of the highlands: Ancash, Santa Cruz, and Huanuco. These projects aim to make the tools and means available to people so that they can improve their living conditions. To achieve this, they receive material aid (for example, seeds and barbed wire to harvest passion fruit). They also receive specific essential information, aid, and accompaniment. The FONDOEMPLEO project interested me; it trains young people so that they can start their own businesses. They do not receive money, but rather material aid so that they can launch their business initiatives. Community work is extremely important. Each person’s participation is for the common good.

Quedé muy impresionada como un campesino está dispuesto en transmitir a su vecino su experiencia de lo aprendido.
I was extremely impressed with how a small producer is willing to transmit his learned experience to his neighbor.
