NORFOLK PUBLIC ART

P

ublic art is all around you in Norfolk, Virginia. For over 10 years, the Norfolk Public Art Program has helped to shape Norfolk’s identity by infusing the downtown area and surrounding neighborhoods with over 70 public art projects. Norfolk Arts works with the Norfolk Emerging Leaders program each summer to employ a team to work with a lead artist creating public art like “Fathoms of Freedom”, by Christopher Kozak featured above. The nearly 40 ft. tall mural was completed during the summer of 2017 to honor 100 years of Naval Station Norfolk. Stars light at night and take on the shape of the Little Dipper. Just a block away, see the 30 ft. tall interactive sculpture “MetalMatisse” by Electroland. A visit to nearby Town Point Park takes you to the “Armed Forces Memorial”, by Jim Cutler and Maggie Smith where large bronze letters from service members appear scattered in the wind. On your way, you’ll pass “The Homecoming” by Stanley Bleifeld, a statue saluting Navy families.

Find your fortune in the “Good Fortune” Freemason parking garage, a project completed with lead artist Cassandra Akers. “All Things Within All Things”, a life-size aluminum elephant by Matthew Gray Palmer will greet you at the Virginia Zoo. On a visit to Norfolk Botanical Garden you’ll see “Intertwine” by Mark Grieve and Ilana Spector. This 20 ft. sculpture of garden forms intertwined symbolizes the hard work involved in creating all the beautiful surroundings.

A hands-on history experience awaits visitors at two Williamsburg area museums that explore the nation’s beginnings. At Jamestown Settlement, gallery exhibits chronicle 1600s Virginia in the context of its Powhatan Indian, English and African cultures, complementing historical interpretation at outdoor re-creations of a Powhatan Indian village, the three ships that brought America’s first permanent English colonists in 1607, and colonial fort. The story of the American Revolution, from the beginnings of colonial unrest to the formation of the new nation, unfolds at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown through indoor exhibits and outdoor re-creations of a Continental Army encampment and Revolution-era farm. The museums are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except Christmas and New Year’s days. For more information call 888-593-4682 or visit www.historyisfun.org.

NORFOLK VISITORS GUIDE | 2018

irginia Arts Festival is your spring destination for the arts! 2018 is a season of must-hear performances including dazzling dance, lively theater, and music for all tastes. The Festival joins the worldwide celebration of Leonard Bernstein at 100, with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, Virginia Chorale, Todd Rosenlieb Dance, and acclaimed soloists; JoAnn Falletta conducts and Bernstein’s daughter Jamie narrates this spectacular evening of music, April 14. The Festival’s dazzling dance performances feature Britain’s Birmingham Royal Ballet in Romeo and Juliet, April 20-22—this famed company’s only North American performance this year—with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra performing the gorgeous Prokofiev score live. Audience favorite Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns March 2-4 with work from contemporary choreographers sure to inspire. The Festival’s great friend AndréMichel Schub, renowned pianist who has served as Director of Chamber Music programming since the Festival’s inception, is retiring, and has chosen to devote his final

season to the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and you can fill your calendar with brilliant Mozart performances throughout the spring. Iconic jazz pianist, composer and bandleader Chick Corea joins banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck in a performance of high-flying, genre-jumping musical invention, May 20, and African-spiced jazz ensemble Ajoyo grooves May 9. And fans of the Fab Four can feast on the authentic music, costumes and video effects of the hit show RAIN: The Beatles Experience, May 2. One of the largest and most spectacular Tattoos in the world, the 22nd Virginia International Tattoo brings military bands, pipe and drum corps, dancers and more together for an awe-inspiring display of music and might, April 26-29. The centerpiece of this year’s show is a moving tribute to Medal of Honor recipients. And in its 17th year, Virginia Beer Festival brings craft brews from throughout Virginia, the region, and the world May 19 to Town Point Park. There are plenty more performances to choose from! Visit the Festival web site at vafest.org for information, performance videos, sample travel itineraries, and of course tickets or call 757-282-2822.

See colorful building-size murals, sidewalk patterns, installations, and art galleries on the NEON District tour; experience 400 years of Norfolk and American history on the Cannonball Tour; or learn about the city’s breweries, how they produce their beer, and discover delicious brew & food pairing recommendations on a brewery tour! But wait…there’s so much more:

George Washington, is a four-acre site that overlooks the Elizabeth River and includes earthwork embankments, ramparts, a dungeon, officers’ quarters, powder magazine, barracks, and guardhouse. The fort helped protect Norfolk during the War of 1812. In the Civil War, Confederate forces seized the fort and used the fort to defend Norfolk and Portsmouth. Located at 801 Front Street, admission is free and self-guided tours are available.

BREWERY TOUR With seven locally-owned craft breweries and an impressive lineup of gastropubs and beer bars, Norfolk is serving up some serious fermented fun. From seasonally-brewed suds to celebrated staples, there’s something on tap to quench your thirst. With breweries and bars in close proximity to the heart of the city and easy to navigate routes, it’s never been easier to taste and tour your way through Norfolk’s craft beer scene. Be sure to take in the full Norfolk craft beer experience as safely as possible, whether on bike or on four wheels with a designated driver or professional tour.

NEON DISTRICT ART TOUR Take a self-guided tour through Norfolk’s first official arts district, the NEON district, or “New Energy of Norfolk.” Begin this vibrant tour on the corner of Brambleton Avenue and Granby Street and see rich murals, quirky art installations and working artists’ galleries. The nationally renowned Chrysler Museum and Chrysler Glass Studio border the district to the east. Unique restaurants, retail shops and a comedy theatre dot the streets of the district, and the city’s grand Harrison Opera House stands tall at the north entrance.

NORFOLK NAVAL BASE TOUR Norfolk is proud to be the home of the world’s largest Naval Station and on a guided tour, you’ll see aircraft carriers, destroyers, amphibious assault ships, and learn about the history of Naval Station Norfolk. The 45-minute year round tours are conducted by naval personnel and depart from the Naval Station Norfolk Tour & Information Center located at 9079 Hampton Blvd. next to gate 5. The cost (cash only) is $10 for adults and $5 for children 3-11, and senior citizens over the age of 60. A picture ID is required for all adults over the age of 18.

HAUNTED NORFOLK TOUR Norfolk traces its roots back to the early 17th century, soon after the first English settlers arrived in the new world. Since then, the city has seen its fair share of history: battles, fires, hurricanes, and strife, and with those come haunting tales that do not allow the past to be forgotten. Take an afternoon and explore some of the most haunted sites on your own including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, The Wells Theatre and Battleship Wisconsin and more.
