Spring Gala

On April 22, nearly 300 friends and family of David’s House gathered together at the Goei Center for an evening of fun and inspiration. Money was raised to support our ongoing operational expenses (over $100,000), but more importantly many, many new individuals learned about what is happening at David’s House.

In the video that was shown, Jill (House 4 resident) said, “I’m loved here. I know I’m a lot of work…. but I’m a person too.”

Every day at David’s House Ministries we are striving to show God’s love to his people. We know that we are all “a lot of work” at times, and Jill gives us a wonderful reminder that we are all people; people made in the image of God and a small reflection of his glory.

Spring has sprung and with it comes renewed energy at the David’s House Ministries community. When I look out my office window, I love to see how many of our family are taking advantage of the weather by walking, biking and getting out to see their friends in the various homes. It’s a wonderful picture of what our community looks like and we invite you to come visit with us anytime!

Support David’s House David’s House, like many non-profit organizations relies on the support of donors to provide the services that they are known for.

While we are fortunate to receive some funding for each resident through governmental sources, the amount that we receive does not cover the costs for the type of care we provide. As a result, we must raise the remaining gap in funding through a variety of channels.

Thankfully, we have wonderful business, church, individual, and foundation partners who support the ministry at David’s House – and we are always looking for new friends and partners. As we kick off our fiscal year (April 1 – March 31) we are working hard to keep our expenses in line while raising funds for operational support. As you look for ways to give back in 2019, please keep David’s House in mind. We provide many ways for you to support us.

Our 2019 Board Members

Our 33rd Annual Heart & Sole Walk-A-Thon will be held on September 14th at the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. This is a great event to join residents, families, and friends in a morning of fun. Stay tuned as we post more information and how to register for the event.

Resident Spotlight

In Memoriam

Joel was the second resident to move into David’s House back in 1987! Joel has always been extremely passionate about sports. He loves all of the Detroit sports teams and is a big University of Michigan fan.

Connie Jill Bishop 1959-2018

Over the years, Joel has played basketball and softball through Special Olympics.

He has now retired from playing and is an assistant coach of a Special Olympics basketball team, The Buffalos, that several other David’s House residents play on.

Late in 2018, we experienced the passing of someone who was near and dear to the hearts of all she came in contact with. Connie Bishop lived at David’s House for the past 7 years. During this time she had many ups and downs with her health, but through it all, she continued to show joy while joking with staff and family. Connie was very much loved. She was someone that you just wanted to hug and tell her she was important to you. There is great comfort and joy in knowing that she is at peace.

Joel also enjoys going to Noorthoek Academy, at Grand Rapids Community College, and doing crossword puzzles and word searches.

Connie is rejoicing in Heaven and she is shouting the victory.

Connie knew the love of her parents and siblings but she also knew the love of Christ. However, she was most loved the last 7 years of her life living at David’s House. The is where I saw her the happiest in 59 years. Her staff was more than caregivers, they loved her and lived life with her. She lived a fuller life having lived at David’s House. They were her friends. I look forward to the day I will see her again. Thank you, Jesus, for my Sister.

Connie loved to sing Christmas songs— her favorite was “Silent Night.” I’ll always remember the words of another song we sang as the lyrics ring so true— When we all get to heaven, What a day of rejoicing that will be, When we all see Jesus, We’ll shout the victory.

Staff Spotlight Four years ago, Jamie’s David’s House journey began.

Starting out, Jamie worked at both House 1 and House 4.

But during her time here, she has also worked at House 2 and Willow Tree Lodge!

Jamie says, “David’s House always accommodated the part-time schedule I needed through college and grad school”. Once she finished school, Jamie started working at David’s House full time throughout all the homes. “I liked the variety it provided and all of the relationships with residents and staff I was able to build”. But when a full-time position became available at House 1, she felt drawn to it.

She was excited to have a change of pace and spend all of her time in one house for a little more consistency.

Jamie has worked the most at House 1 and has built extra special relationships with all of the guys. Some of her favorite activities are baking, doing crafts, and hanging out outside.

Jamie is a very valuable member of the David’s House team.

She’s always more than willing to help out and loves that David’s House feels like family. Thank you for all your hard work and joy that you bring to the ministry, Jamie!
